LONDON MARATHON 2012 THANK YOU ! I would like to thank the people of Minster for their support in helping me achieve my fundraising target of £1,600 for WHIZZ-KIDZ. I am absolutely thrilled to tell you that I have surpassed my target and raised a staggering £2,600 to date! I am also very excited to tell you that I ran the London Marathon last Sunday and actually thoroughly enjoyed the day! Family and friends came and supported me around the 26.2 mile course and apparently I managed to smile at each sighting! I think that it might have been more of a grimace at 25 miles! It was a great experience and one that I would like to do again one day! Hopefully I can run with Dad next time – unfortunately he was not able to run this year as he had to have an operation in February. Thanks once again, Carly Bedwell

Your Letters… Who’s Responsible for the Drainage Ditches in Watchester Lane? Hello, I hate to be a pain (well not really) but I asked a few months ago if anyone knew who is responsible for the drainage ditches/dykes that run along the bottom of Cornelis/Petts estate on Watchester Lane? There's loads of wildlife in and around them (tadpoles, fish, newts to name a few) and they are full of rubbish. We need to clean them up. I’ve offered to clean up the rubbish but would like help. Can you ask around, thanks very much. Linda. (Editor’s note: If you would like to help please contact us at MM and we’ll forward your details on. As for the responsibility of this area, MPC are aware of this letter and will hopefully shed some light on the matter.) Thank you’s…

The Birchington Builder Thank you Aaron Kluibenschadel, Minster’s local Community Warden, for… coming to our aid when our remote control became jammed down the back of a radiator. Aaron arrived armed with all the necessary equipment (namely a wire coathanger!) which he used most professionally to retrieve the remote for us without any fuss. This sort of thing is probably not in his normal line of duty but he deserves credit for going that bit further. Thank you Aaron. Mr. & Mrs. Bell

June 2012 MINSTER-IN-THANET WI

Vice President, Sarah Eaton-Brown, opened the May meeting at 7.30 on Tuesday 8th May in the Village Hall. After the reminder that Minutes of April’s meeting could be read on the notice boards, Cathey Hoenes was introduced. Following her presentation on the resolution for more midwives in the UK, she lead discussion by the members and a vote. There was a small majority for the resolution and it was noted that our delegate, President Marion Rose, can use her discretion on how to vote at the Royal Albert Hall AGM on 30th May. The meeting continued after special refreshments of wine, cheese and cakes, with Sarah confirming details of the Garden Morning at Ann Wilks’ on the 16th June ; the three June flying dates at Manston; the Crochet Day on the 30th June in the Village Hall; the Strawberry Tea on the 11th July at Marion’s and the Buckingham Palace educational trip on the 15th September (times TBC at June’s meeting). She asked members for volunteers for the Village ‘It’s a Knockout’ competition and the WI’s float at the Minster Show. Contributions for the Show ‘home cooking’ stall and the garden morning were requested to give funds a boost at these events. A get-to-know-you “speed dating” session followed after which the minutes of April’s meeting were approved and seconded. At the June meeting we will be celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee with Pimm’s and nibbles and a group photograph with our commemorative flowering Prunus tree. Members are requested to wear red, white and blue (tiaras and hats optional)! Should be a particularly memorable, ‘colourful’, busy and interesting meeting with Patsy Baker’s talk on ‘A day in the life of a make-up artist’ as well. After the raffle, the Vice-president closed the meeting at around 9.30 pm.

We recently received the following enquiry from a reader: My mother has an old framed small oil painting that was bought around the 1950s by an artist that resided in Minster, Thanet, Kent. We are interested in trying to find the name of the artist of the picture below (as it is unsigned). It is hoped that if it is displayed in this magazine the locals may be able to add a little more history to it, as at present a Minster artist is all the history that is attached to said item. My Father (when he was alive) bought this from an artist in Minster, Thanet. I have confirmed this with my Mother today. My Father looked similar but we are both convinced the portrait is not of him. The item was painted on what appears to be a small floor tile. The measurements are: 5 and half inch x 7 and a half inch or 140mm x 190mm for your younger readers! Bought in the late 1950`s although in my opinion it looks cubism in style, so would suggest an early period of around the 1930`s. Considering cubism did not start until around 1910 in France, my Father was fluent in French, so it is possible this artist (considering the style of painting) was French, but this is purely a long shot. Also it could be a self portrait of the artist. Not much to go on but if you find out anything about this painting e.g. Who painted it/where did the painter live, Mother and I would be very grateful. The picture will never be for sale as it is passed down in the family, but if a reader does have another from the same artist I would love to buy it. Value is in the floor tile not the picture, but the local history is it`s true worth. (Name and Email address supplied) Editors note: If you think you may know anything to help find the artist of this painting please contact MM who will pass your details on.

GARDEN WILDLIFE SURVEY OF MINSTER & MONKTON 2012 Working with the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) and with the cooperation of Minster and Monkton residents, we are hoping to find out exactly what wildlife we have in the villages. So please do get involved! Between the dates of Sunday 3rd June to Saturday 23rd June (inc), ‘Steven (Seagal)’ the oneeyed Herring Gull from simply use the adjoining form to record the species Monkton Road that use your garden if you live in either Minster or ‘Jeff’ the grey squirrel from Monkton Road Monkton. Here are the easy steps: 1. Define your recording area – this could be your entire garden or just the bit you can see from your kitchen window, for example. 2. Decide when and for how long your recording period will be – some people record for an hour on a Sunday, others for 20 minutes each day throughout the week. The choice is yours. Select something that works for you. All the we ask is that you are consistent in your efforts from one week to the next. 3. Start your recording – please only record birds or animals that are using your garden. Birds that are simply flying over the garden or seen in neighbouring fields or gardens, should be ignored. 4. Record the presence of the species by placing a black line horizontally through the pink box alongside the species name. There are three boxes for each species, allowing you to carry out the recording in each of the three weeks from Sunday 3rd June to Saturday 23rd June. 5. Record which bird foods you provided. If you are not sure what these are then take a look at the BTO website www.bto.org/gbw and look under the Gardens and Wildlife heading for the sections on bird foods. If you use a seed mix with lots of large cereal grains in it, please record it as SEED MIX WITH CEREAL. If your mix is mostly smaller seeds, with only a little cereal, then use SEED MIX NO CEREAL. Mark water as present if you have a bird bath or pond in your garden. 6. Return the form to 72 Monkton Road, Minster, or hand it into the box in the library, remembering to keep it flat and unfolded. Do not write anything extra on the form but do include a separate sheet or a Post-it note if you have extra comments to make.

With adequate results, an exhibition of the findings will be displayed in the village for everyone to enjoy. Let’s discover what wildlife is on our doorstep! Completed forms can also be scanned and emailed to katiejanehogben@hotmail.co.uk Any of your photos of wildlife in Minster would also be welcome and would potentially be included in the final exhibition. Take a peek into your garden and see what you find, while being part of this exciting survey!

Happy wildlife watching!

Minster man gears up for 900-mile challenge!

This September a dedicated group of friends will be using pedal power to generate money to buy a vital piece of life-saving equipment for seriously ill babies at the QEQM. Carl Ashby will be cycling the length of Great Britain in an attempt to raise £25,000 for a state-of-the-art ventilator for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). Carl has a 5-year old daughter, Isabelle, who was subject to an extremely traumatic birth, resulting in her heart stopping before she was delivered. He said: “I was in pieces and didn’t know what to do, it was the longest 10 minutes of my life, waiting for her to take her first breath and squeeze my finger.” Thanks to the skill and dedication of the staff at the baby unit, where Isabelle stayed for a week, she made a full recovery from her injuries, as do numerous other babies born in difficult circumstances. Carl’s friend Jason Short, had a similarly tragic tale to tell of his daughter Rhiannon, which is what prompted him to organise this

event, to finally give something back to the unit. Carl and Jason will be joined by up to eight others on the epic ride from John O’Groats to Broadstairs, a gruelling journey of nearly 900 miles, that they have to complete in just eight days. The average time for this sort of distance is between 10 and 14 days. Carl said: “We’ve told seasoned cyclists that we’re planning on doing over 100 miles every day and they think we’re mad, so we hope we haven’t underestimated the challenge. Whatever happens we have to be back in time for a charity auction night we’ve organised to raise even more funds, so it has to be done.” Lots are already being collected by the team, from weekend breaks to signed sports memorabilia and Carl would be hugely grateful if any readers can provide a suitable auction prize themselves, whatever it may be. The group need to maintain an average speed of 15 miles per hour for the entire event, to ensure the best daylight and sufficient recovery time, and that means being in the saddle for 7 to 8 hours per day. Fortunately, Carl has an understanding wife who is now used to him disappearing for hours at a time to train, a schedule, which started in early January. He said: “I think it’s going to cost me more in presents that it will in expenses for the actual trip. She’s okay at the moment, but is getting a bit tired of me talking about it all the time.”

The Minster & Monkton Royal British Legion Club have been a tremendous help, already raising £380.00 at a quiz night last month, with several more events planned. Carl said: “They can’t help enough and are bending over backwards to help arrange future events to raise funds for the unit. Keep an eye out for another quiz night, a race night and a fun casino night over the next couple of months. If you’ve never been to the Legion, you don’t know what you’re missing out on.” If anyone wants to make a donation direct to the appeal, they

can do so through the ‘justgiving’ website (details below) but what would also be a huge help is any donations of prizes for raffles. Carl said: “Raffles are a great way of raising funds as everyone feels like they have a chance to win a prize for a tiny outlay and we hold them at every event we organise. If you have anything from a bottle of wine to an unwanted Christmas present, please let me know!” To sponsor the team go to: www.justgiving.com/scbu-margate

TIGER’S TIP Keep all berries fresh - Prepare a mixture of one pint of vinegar (white or apple cider is best) and ten parts water. Place berries in this mixture and swirl round. Drain, rinse if you want. Pop into the fridge. Raspberries will last a week or more, strawberries go almost 2 weeks, they will not get mouldy and soft.

SDS ROOFING

SAFEGUARD YOUR NEAREST AND DEAREST FROM THE RISK OF FIRE

PROPERTY MAINTENANCE

When you hear a fire engine sweep down the road with its sirens blazing, it’s normal to picture a home on fire, and wonder who might be in danger. But how often do you think whether your friends, loved ones and neighbours are equipped with the right advice to protect them from fire? Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is appealing to parishioners to make sure their local communities take advantage of the free services on offer. Stuart Skilton, KFRS’s Head of Community Safety, said: “Perhaps you know someone who lives alone, and may be elderly or have health issues, who could benefit from our advice. Perhaps your own children are now starting a family of their own and need some tips on fire prevention. “We can offer people practical help to reduce the risks. They might need a smoke alarm fitted, advice on escape routes and what to do if a fire starts in their home. Or perhaps they need some more extra guidance to keep safe. Our dedicated team can provide a range of specialist equipment, such as fireproof bedding and smoke alarms for the hard of hearing or those with sight problems.” “Just three breaths of toxic smoke from a fire can be life-threatening, but by encouraging those you care about to get in touch, you will be playing a huge part in preventing a fire and maybe even saving a life.” Tips on staying safe from fire: • Make sure you fit, and regularly test, a smoke alarm. It is the single most important piece of safety equipment in any home. • If you plan on using an open fire, make sure your chimney has been recently swept as build-ups of soot and ash can cause chimney fires. • When going to bed, make absolutely certain that any open fire is either out, or pushed back into the grate and a guard used to prevent sparks setting light to carpets or furniture. • Interior doors should always be closed when going to bed as they can dramatically reduce the spread of fire. • Portable heaters should be dust-free and kept well away from anything that could catch fire. • Candles should always be placed on a non flammable surface, be away from soft furnishing like curtains and never be left unattended. It is far safer to consider using torches instead of candles. • Before using an electric blanket, make sure it is under 10 years old, check it is working order and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. • For further information or to learn more about the free advice and services on offer to residents contact KFRS on 0800 923 7000 or visit www.3breaths.info
