I can't remember a time in my life when I've woken up to so many awful events in the UK… Westminster Bridge, Manchester, London Bridge, Grenfell Tower and as I write this we've just heard about Finsbury Park. The Queen has described the national mood as sombre, recognising NORTHROP SERVICES these events have rocked our nation and to be honest I'm lost for words KITCHEN & BATHROOM FITTING as I think about the overwhelming sense of loss, injustice and fear. Tiling, Plastering However, what has been remarkable, is the response of the people in & General Maintenance these communities and indeed across the UK. We've seen musicians join together in song, rival football teams displaying togetherness, celebrities HOME DECORATING urging us to pray, people giving money and clothes and food, people of Interior & Exterior different faiths coming together in solidarity… and so the list could go Local, Reliable & Experienced on. Contact Paul or Tracy We can never know of course what each day will bring, but we can be 01843 823 646 people who make a choice to work together to bring the love, acceptance, peace, unity and joy our communities so desperately need. WELCOME TO… Revd Vicky Coneys Vicky is joining the Wantsum Group of Churches as Curate from July. If you see Vicky in the village do stop and say hello, she would be happy to chat! EDITORIAL Very little space again this month and yet again not everything submitted made it onto the printed page, but we’ll try to get in what we’ve missed out next month. Just enough space to thank all those who entered the scarecrow competition, and congratulations to all our winners, your continued support makes it all worthwhile, but it’d be great to see many more next year so please get your thinking caps on and start planning. There is no set theme but remember it is the 100th Anniversary of WW1 next year so that may give you some ideas. Thanks also to those businesses who gave so generously when I was on the scrounge for prizes, without you we couldn’t afford to run the competition so give yourselves a pat on the back, but remember I’ll probably be back again next year!! Just leaves me enough room to ask - where’s Zac?

your repeat prescriptions in good time, and most importantly, check whether your annual review is imminent. Please also remember that our Healthcare Professionals take their holidays at this time as well and our resources may be slightly stretched, so please make your appointments in good time and ensure they are used appropriately. SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 12.00 noon on the following days for staff training: Wednesday 19 July and Thursday 28 September. Bank Holiday - Monday 28 August - closed all day Should you need to see a doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 Service via the normal surgery number 821 333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111 to receive non-urgent confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases please dial 999 as normal. MISSED APPOINTMENTS Despite a recent improvement, thank you, the figures last month sadly illustrate that sometimes our resources are not being used appropriately. Last month 50 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment and 44 patients did not attend their nurse’s appointment, so that’s 94 valuable appointments and time wasted. Why bother making an appointment (difficult enough at times) and then not use it? Please, if you don’t need it then cancel it and if you keep forgetting then get our text reminder service. WALK FOR LIFE ACTIVITY PROGRAMME The surgery holds these events every Thursday morning at 10.30am, so why not come along and join us for a walk around the local area for about an hour, with the aim of meeting people, becoming more active and enjoying our local community. Why not also exercise your dogs at the same time and meet fellow dog walkers who have already joined the group! FRIENDS AND FAMILY SURVEY Thanks to all those patients who take part and please continue to do so. We welcome all your comments, because any feedback, good or bad, can help us improve our service to you. Last month a total of 223 patients responded with the following results extremely likely/likely - 90%; extremely unlikely/unlikely - 6%; unsure/don’t know - 4%. LIAISON GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our next meeting, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821 200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821 049. or email kenself@me.com.

MINSTER PRACTICE NURSE WINS MAJOR AWARD Dawn Langdon, a Nurse Practitioner at Minster Surgery, has been awarded “The Inspirational Mentor Award” for the whole of Kent and Medway NHS Practice Nurses, at a presentation at the Tudor Park Marriott Hotel. Dawn was aware that she had been nominated, but totally unaware that she had won when she was invited to attend the presentation ceremony last month. As Minster is a training practice for student nurses, Dawn and her team have guided many such students throughout the years, and Kent and Medway NHS invite nominations from such students and fellow colleagues through out the County. Dawn has been a member of the team at Minster Surgery for over 17 years, firstly as a District Nurse and now in her present position as Nurse Practitioner. She is a valued member of the team and has gained the trust and respect of her patients. Therefore, on behalf of the staff and patients at Minster Surgery, we would like to offer Dawn our sincere congratulations on this well deserved award.

KEN AND FIONA WELCOME YOU TO

This month’s recipe is a really easy lemon, lime and mint sorbet which I am assured tastes just like a Mojito. Served in an ice bowl for effect, it has a charm of its own. The recipe below made about a pint of sorbet, so I would be very tempted to double it, as it really doesn’t last long! Lemon, Lime and Peppermint Sorbet 7oz/200g sugar 8 fl oz/250ml water 5 large lemons, zest and juice 5 limes, zest and juice 1 bunch of fresh mint Heat the water and sugar in a pan until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer for 5 minutes, take off the the heat and leave it to cool entirely (you can put it in the freezer!). This keeps for weeks, so you could make double quantity and put half in the fridge for another time. Add the juice and zest to the mixture, stir well and churn the mixture in an ice cream maker. I found it worked best to put the mint in later, as it got stuck on the blades of the churn. Alternatively, freeze in a shallow container in the freezer, breaking it up with a fork every half hour or so to stop large crystals from forming. This makes enough to serve 4 people, roughly a pint or so. It is best served slightly less than rock hard. To make it more like a sherbet, add 1 egg white to the ice cream maker, or whisk the whites and fold them into the mix if you are open freezing it. Ice Bowl 2 bowls parcel tape and a couple of heavy tins flowers cooled boiled water/mineral water (this helps keep the ice clear) Choose two bowls with a similar shape - do I have to tell you to have one smaller than the other? Thought not! Pick pretty flowers. Pour some water into the larger bowl, add some of the flowers. Place the smaller bowl on top. Push the rest of the flowers in round the edges, adding more water. The second bowl will rise, so put the tins into it before strapping the parcel tape across the top to keep the second bowl level with the first and in the centre. Fill up with the water - you might need to check the tape - and add another food tin. Freeze overnight until solid. To use - allow the bowl to defrost just a little before unmoulding it and adding the sorbet. It will be a wonderful centrepiece - some people commented on how pretty the flowers were as they appeared as the ice melted. Just make sure that the ice bowl is in a container that can hold the inevitable meltwater! For more decadent recipes, go to https://katespuddings.blogspot.co.uk

The Saddler at Minster The twenty-four open gardens highlighted the incredible skill Traditional Village Family Friendly Pub of the gardeners who had worked extremely hard to show what BT and Sky Sports Pool - Darts can be created. Massive Thanks to Minster Special four legged guest Calli and her owner Barrie Penton were warmly welcomed to The Hair of The Dog, Minster, to accept a cheque on behalf of Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Minster’s own, Emma Dickerson, ran the iconic London Marathon on Sunday 23 April to raise money for the charity. Being a regular at Alfie’s Striders running club, Emma trained hard for the challenge and already completed 26.2 miles at Brighton Marathon two weeks prior for a taster of what was to come. Guide Dogs for the Blind relies entirely on donations due to receiving no government funding. Every hour, another person in the UK goes blind, but a Guide Dog could help change the lives of those who are blind or partially sighted. The cost is just under £55,000 to support a guide dog from birth to retirement, so any money raised is vital for the charity to continue its work. It is with thanks to the generous people of Minster, that made helping Guide Dogs for the Blind possible. Julie Beaney and Gary Hake of Hair of the Dog, vowed to help with the fundraising efforts. The village micro pub had customers joining in with various challenges, auctions and gave generous donations. Julie also handmade a variety of Christmas decorations, sold at the Late Night Shopping event, which proved extremely popular. Minster resident Michael Abbott kindly held a family Winter Wonderland event. Santa with his reindeer, balloon sculptures, raffle and live entertainment were showered with snow for a fun packed Christmas adventure. Councillor Bob Grove presented the cheque for £2,000, which was raised by the people of Minster alone. Thanks and appreciation were given to everyone involved for their generosity and making this such a huge success.

He also talked about his Finance and Investment Management Company and the services they offer. We held a plant fundraising sale where members could buy a plant for £1 all the money raised will be sent to our chosen charity ‘Thanet Families in Need’. MINSTER SHOW COMMITTEE SAYS - WE NEED YOU!!! Minster Show Committee are looking for volunteers to do these specific jobs on Show Day (Saturday 22 July). We need someone to support the walking Fancy Dress section of the Parade. This requires a volunteer being at the top of Taylor Road at 1.15pm, sorting entrants into groups, writing down winners and returning the list to the Showground. You would be shadowing the present volunteer for this year with a view to taking on the role for future years. This request is to replace Pauline Bedwell who has volunteered in this role for about 20 years and I would like to thank her for that. Volunteering for the Show is important to the event on the day and for the future. We would also like to find a couple of people to support with car parking. We do have stalwarts who are there every year, but it is good to be able to lessen the burden and give people a break. This would involve being on the Showground from 12.30pm to meet the team and sort the roles for the afternoon. If you are interested please see Karen in Attwells and let her know or pop a note through my door (28 Orchard Close) with contact details. Thank you, Dominique (Chair of Committee).

CO-OP VOUCHERS There appears to be confusion by some residents as to where they may exchange their Co-op vouchers or where to use their blue and yellow Co-op cards. With that in mind a resident wrote an email to Co-op Head Office to ask for clarification. We have transcribed them here with the approval of both parties involved in the message exchange. (However, we have been asked to withhold the resident’s name but we felt it needed something other than ‘Minster resident’ so in keeping with the whole exchange we have added instead what could be a play on words! (To the person concerned - think about it!!) He-he!!

do however, like a Bobcat and a Lynx, have a working relationship where you can use your card in both stores. The main difference is that with the Blue Co-op card (Us) you would not collect the 5% and 1% in their store. They currently don't offer that reward but will collect your points and send them to us for us to collate at the end of the year. I do understand it may be frustrating dashing between the two societies like a Cheetah but i would recommend using the coupon/voucher at the store it was earned. My apologies for the late reply it has been quite busy here in the Serengeti that is the Co-op service centre. I do hope that I can score highly and look forward to hearing from you again. Many thanks and have a great weekend. Joe Moran Co-op Membership Team

Dear Sir We have a conundrum in our village. We are very fortunate to have a CO-OP store and petrol station at the top of the village, and another CO-OP store in the centre of the village. I have noticed that, not just me, other customers have had their money off coupons declined. The reason is that the top CO-OP is different to the centre CO-OP. Forgive my levity, but if the animal is small, furry and meows, it is a cat. If it is large, furry and roars, it is a Lion. But, whatever you think, they are both ‘members’ of the Cat family, both are carnivores, both catch other mammals and both purr, as only a cat family member can do. One obviously louder than the other. We all use both CO-OPs and we all often get money off vouchers. Please explain. You have one hour to answer the question. Marks will be deducted for spelling and grammar errors. There is a total of 20 marks for this question. When you have finished please hand in your paper [just kidding] Kind regards Grumpy Good Morning Grumpy Thanks for your email. We at the Co-op never like any conundrum in any village and I do hope to rectify this issue for you. I did enjoy your analogy of the Co-op and the felidae family. Much like this family of many feline members the Co-op has many different societies. At first glance, we do seem one and the same but upon closer inspection like David Attenborough we can see subtle differences. The Southern Society although they proudly fly the Co-op flag are a separate and independent Co-op Society. We

Dear Joe Magic. As topical as Top Cat. Could I put your letter in our village mag. Will explain to folk the answer. Cheers Grumpy Hi Grumpy Yes that would be great. I’ll let Benny, Choo-Choo and the rest of the gang know. If you need help with anything else in the future please feel free to let me know. If I’m passing through I’ll pick up a copy. Joe Note from the Editor If after all that you’re still as confused as I am, I think it means you can use either your blue card (Tothill Co-op) or your yellow card (Monkton Road - Southern Co-op) in either store but you can only exchange vouchers in the actual Co-op that issued them. Using the blue card, points will be added to your (Tothill) Co-op account whilst using the yellow card points will be added to your (Monkton Road) Southern Co-op account, regardless of which store you use them in. However, you will not get the 5% or 1% bonuses offered at present by the (Tothill) Co-op by using your blue card in the Southern Co-op. Now does that all make sense? Or is it still all as clear as mud ???

Minster Parish Council Meeting Summary of Key Points ● The report from the Community Warden and PCSO was read out at the meeting and there was some concern at the number of incidents reported over the last month. This included the arrest of 5 males for breaking into a chapel at Minster Abbey to use it as a drinking den, the arrest of a male in Brockman’s Close for breaking into a car, and a warning given to a male at the public toilets in the High Street following a report of sexual activity. However, the arrest of offenders is positive and the Chairman reminded everyone of the importance of reporting incidents to the Police, however difficult that process is; this is the only way we will increase the police presence in the parish. ● Cllr Gregory, now attending as a County Councillor, informed the meeting that KCC elected members each receive a community grant of £22,000 for allocation to organisations in their area and that he would focus on community groups. ● The Chairman thanked Ray and Jenny Owen for producing over 40 hanging baskets for the village which are funded by businesses and subsidised by the Parish Council, and as if that was not enough, undertaking to water a number of them as well. ● The KALC Community Award Scheme 2017 certificate was presented to Mr. Brian Portanier of Tothill Street, Minster, in recognition for his many years of service co-ordinating the Walking Bus to Minster School. Brian thanked the council for nominating him and explained how his instigation of this service had blossomed over the years so that there were now 110 walking bus schemes in Kent and it is estimated that this reduces traffic by some 200,000 vehicles a year. The Chairman encouraged as many people as possible to use this service to reduce the traffic problems in the village at peak times. ● The meeting approved the KCC Highways work proposed for the Butts Field Estate, the junction of Taylor Road and Monkton Road. It is hoped this will be completed during the summer holiday period. ● The Chairman reported that a meeting had taken place in mid-May with the Head of Asset Management at TDC to discuss the possible transfer of car parks to the Parish Council; the meeting was positive but sadly 12 days later we were informed that this officer had left the employ of TDC. Cllr. Grove reported meetings with TDC Leader Chris Wells and CEO Madeline Homer on proposed charges and possible transfer of the car parks; we were told that we would receive a response in 2 weeks. As we prepare these notes we have not had an update. However, this matter will be pursued! It was pleasing that the Clerk was aware of at least 57 emails sent from the parish objecting to parking charges, so people are making their views heard. ● The Clerk reported that, after contacting RiverOak to express our extreme disappointment at not having a consultation event in the Parish where most of the airport is sited, she has now received confirmation that an additional event will be added. The event will be in the form

of a presentation and questions at the Minster Village Hall on Tuesday 27 June at 7pm. ● The last 15 minutes of the meeting was for public questions and any other urgent issues. The following matters were raised :1. Minster Football Club have asked MPC to consider providing financial assistance to hire an open top bus to celebrate their success this season. Current and past members would ride on the bus through the village as part of the Minster Show Parade. (This was subsequently discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the council and agreed.) 2. The problems of fly-tipping and how to reduce it. 3. The need to replace signs such as the sign to Monkton in the village and a clearer sign to the Industrial Unit at the top of the village to reduce the number of lorries entering the village itself. The Clerk is happy to take reports of this nature but also advised that KCC have an online reporting procedure which can be used by anyone if they wish to report direct. 4. Dog fouling in Rose Gardens; bins are located nearby to reduce this. 5. The traffic problems caused by parents driving their children to school – more use of the walking bus! 6. Children climbing a tree in Taylor Road.

Police Report: We have received reports of anti-social behaviour in the Minster area. You can help us to help you by reporting anything you consider to be anti-social behaviour; this enables us to build a picture of what is happening, when it is happening and enable us to act on it. When reporting incidents please note dates, times, descriptions, overheard names, exact locations or as much information as you can give. You can contact us by different methods, whichever is suitable to you and we can assure you that your details will not be disclosed without your permission, however details of problems in this location may be shared with other agencies to allow us to deliver a multiagency response to your problems. We hope that you take this opportunity to report these incidents so that we can help keep the village safe from anti-social behaviour.

July 2017 MINSTER ARMBOUTS-CAPPEL TWINNING We had a very exciting and successful quiz at the beginning of the month with nearly 120 people joining in. Our thanks as always to the RBL and their staff for all their help. Next quiz is on 2 September. Our Association formed a liaison group last year with a few local Twinning Associations and to date we have hosted 2 evenings where we have become acquainted with one another. Sandwich hosted a good evening where future event details were discussed from all groups. We thank Sandwich for the evening and Sturry/Fordwich who have indicated they will be arranging one for November. Mildred our Giant Nun had a day out in Broadstairs on Saturday 17 June to help celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Dickens’ Festival. She had a wonderful day and amazed a lot of people with her size. We hope to see you at the Minster Show on 22 July and have some fun on our stalls. The bouncy castle will be there for the little ones too. This year, we have continued the fun into the evening with a Cash Bingo Night which will be held in the Marquee at the Rec from 7pm. Details can be seen on the poster on Page *****. Alternatively, you could ring Carol on 01843 447 706 or 07745 683 466. This is a new venture for us, so please join us and help make the evening a success. The bonus game prize is a whopping £100. Would you like to go home with that? Tickets are being sold in advance by Carol or Karen in Attwells. This will be in the form of a voucher, which you can exchange on the night for a book of 8 games. We will be serving tea and coffee at half time, but if you wish to take your own food and drink, please do so. The raffle will be drawn at half time too. If this evening is successful, then we could repeat it at some future point. Let’s all go for it!!

New Chair for Minster Parish Council I would like to introduce myself. I am Cllr. Penny Gimes and in May I was elected as the Chairman of Minster Parish Council, when Councillor Bob Grove decided to step down. He has committed a great deal of time and effort to the Parish Council over the past 6 years and is also a District Councillor and Chair of TDC Planning so he felt it was time for a change. So he nominated me! I was brought up in Canterbury and had family connections in Thanet. I served 30 years as a Police Officer throughout Kent before retiring and moving to the Scottish Highlands for 6 years. This was a wonderful experience but as my husband and myself have a large extended family we decided it was time to return to Kent and we moved to Minster 4 years ago. I had no plans to become a councillor but the prospect of various developments in the area fired my interest in local issues and 2 years ago I decided to take a more active part in our community so became a councillor. I have a great deal less experience than many of my fellow councillors so I am grateful for their support in taking on this responsibility. I know that I can only successfully carry out this role with their support and the support of the residents of Minster. I will endeavour to steer the council to follow a course which will benefit the residents as I believe that the future of Minster matters to us all. I am aware that the year ahead will throw quite a few obstacles in our path so I look forward to working with everyone to preserve the quality of life and values held so dear in this community. I would like to encourage more interaction with people in the parish so to start with I have added a period of 15 minutes at the end of the monthly Parish Council meeting to allow questions from the public. This may be for people to contribute to or clarify items that have been raised earlier in the meeting, or it may be to raise other issues. If the matter can be answered it will be; if the matter raises bigger issues, then it can be added to the agenda for future meetings. I do hope that this will encourage more attendance at the meetings as what happens there may affect you. Any other suggestions to improve the work of the Parish Council are welcome. Please email clerk@minsterparishcouncil.org.uk with a note for my attention. Thank you. Cllr. Penny Gimes, Chairman.

Reporting Local Environmental Problems When travelling around the area on foot or by car many of you will notice problems in the local environment such as broken signs, faulty lights, potholes, fly-tipping, overhanging trees and hedges on roads, footpaths, cycle paths, etc. The county and local authorities can only put these things right if they know about them so please report them whenever possible. Some people contact the Parish Council office and report such matters to the Parish Clerk, and you are welcome to continue to report in this way. (Contact details are on page 2 of this publication) When this happens the Clerk will pass the matter to the appropriate authority. However, many of you may not know that you can report direct to KCC and TDC on line. If the problem relates to potholes, streetlights, broken signs, faulty traffic signals, overgrown trees/hedges overhanging roads/pavements/cycle paths, and other similar issues it is a KCC matter and you can report on line at: https://www.kent.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/reporta-problem. If the problem relates to issues with footpaths, bridlepaths or any public right of way you can report on line at: https://www.kent.gov.uk/waste-planning-andland/public-rights-of-way/report-a-problem-on-aright-of-way. If the problem relates to waste collection, fly-tipping, dog fouling or litter then that should be reported to TDC on line at one of the following sites: https://thanet.gov.uk/your-services/recycling-andrubbish/report-an-issue/report-your-missed-bin/ https://thanet.gov.uk/your-services/recycling-andrubbish/report-an-issue/fly-tipping-and-litter/ https://www.thanet.gov.uk/yourservices/recycling-and-rubbish/report-anissue/dog-waste There is also an ‘App’ for both Android and iPhones called Country Eye; this relates to rural crime but also includes fly-tipping and potholes. It allows you to take a photo of the problem and send it to the Country Eye team who will forward it to the appropriate authority. We hope you find this information useful.

Minster Church of England Primary School Would you like to be one of our school governors? We currently have a vacancy for a co-opted governor at Minster. This would be for someone who wants to be actively involved in the leadership of the school. We have identified in our skill’s audit that we need someone with Special Educational Needs (SEND)/Inclusion knowledge and interests. The person most suited for this role will need to be proactive and enthusiastic, with the best interests of the school and all of our children at the centre of their thoughts. We would love a declaration of interest from anyone with professional knowledge of SEND! There is quite a big time commitment with at least one governor meeting a term (6 a year), as well as monitoring and school visits, with follow up reports, often termly. You would also need to be prepared to complete training and read relevant paperwork and documents outside of this to prepare for meetings and expand your knowledge base. The role of a governor is demanding, but very rewarding and we would love someone who fits the bill to come and join our hardworking team. If you are interested in this role, please contact the school office on 01843 821 384 or email office@minster-ramsgate.kent.sch.uk so that we can put you in touch with the relevant person on the Governing Body who can give you more information.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED Minster Parish Council staff work tirelessly to keep the village to the standard we are all used to seeing, but unfortunately, with government cutbacks, it is getting increasingly difficult. Minster has a small group of volunteers who look after and maintain two footpaths in the village. An even smaller group is working on the High Street car park to make it a nicer area. We are now looking to enhance the cemetery area. Do you love Minster and would like to help out? Do you have a few hours to spare per week/month? Are you aged between 15 and 100? Would you like to have volunteering listed on your University application? Are you embarking on a Duke of Edinburgh Award and require a community scheme to join? If you would like to join any of the above groups, or have another area of the village that you would like to see improved, then please contact The Clerk, Kyla Lamb at clerk@minsterparishcouncil.org.uk or ring 821 339

Underwater Creatures There are lots of many wacky and spooky creatures living under the sea that no-one knows about. Also, lots of myths follow the deep, such as: Mermaids, the Loch Ness Monster, Ogopogo and a Jaguar Shark. by Milly Sparham

THE KNITTER Way back in the 60s and 70s Knitting needles and wool were our kit Cardigans and jumpers were expensive We had no choice but to knit Then on through the 80s and 90s It was then things started to change The price of wool continually rising Buying was cheaper and what a fantastic range Slowly I became redundant Needles and wool behind a cupboard door It was then I started sewing Toys for sale with a “Can you make more?” Then in Minster Matters Came a request, “Poppy knitters we really need” Out came my wool and my needles I’ll knit !, my books I won’t read

No one knew how this tragedy did start, Smoke lurked into their rooms in the middle of the night, Though the loving people who had a kind heart, Helped the young and old that were full of fright. The homeless children screamed fighting for their lives, While the kindhearted fighters put out this fire, As men and women looked for their children, husbands, and wive’s. These amazing people did inspire so many lives. by Isabella Brown

The ladies want thousands of poppies They take about 39 minutes That’s another one done To decorate our Cemetery fencing For the 100th Anniversary of World War I

INCONSIDERATE NEIGHBOURS The May Bank Holiday (now well over) was something to look forward to. Nice sunny weather in the daytime, a chance to sit outside or have a barbeque, but not on Sunday the 28 May, that was ruined by some selfish Minster resident who had to light a bonfire which drifted over the Butts Field Estate all day and the whole day was ruined, we couldn’t even have a window open in the evening. Has this selfish person not heard of the green bins that the council pick up to remove your garden waste or take it to the tip yourself. Barry Harris Taylor Road
