MINSTER PARISH COUNCIL

Decimus Property are holding a public exhibition to provide an opportunity for residents to review their proposed plans for a Costa Coffee and a farm shop on vacant land south of the Laundry Road service station, off the A299. The proposals would bring an active use to an unused piece of land and are intended to complement the existing facilities at the adjacent services. Members of the development team will be available at the exhibition and we look forward to discussing our proposals with you. A feedback questionnaire will be provided at the exhibition, and our intention is to seek the views of local residents as we prepare a planning application for submission to Thanet District Council to seek planning permission for the proposed scheme. If you do have any queries regarding the proposals or the exhibition please contact Garry Gatt of Decimus on 01892 704 300 or email – mail@decimusproperty .co.uk.

We look forward to meeting you!! St. Nicholas at Wade CT7 0NY

EDITORIAL As you can see from the article above we are looking for volunteers to help us keep this magazine in production. I’m not getting any younger and it is time for me to start looking to lighten my workload somewhat, but to do that the team need some very willing volunteers who have time to commit to this project. I’ve now been involved for over 11 years and I’d like to be able to pass on my knowledge and experience. On a different note, it was great to see so many at the Show this past weekend luckily the rain held off just long enough. Even Zac came out to meet some of his loyal followers. Well as usual I’v all too soon run out of space so it just leaves me enough room to ask my usual question - where’s Zac? Gel Polish on fingers and toes only £28 Book now to avoid disappointment

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP MINSTER SURGERY TO TRIAL NEW TEST EQUIPMENT Minster is one of very few surgeries across NHS England to be asked to pilot the new “C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Rapid Test Cassette” and “Mini Cube” diagnostic equipment. CRP is found in patients with acute infections and inflammatory conditions and this equipment is 99.9% accurate in determining whether patients need antibiotics, and whether they are benefiting and improving a patient’s condition. The equipment has just been received and following commissioning and training the pilot is expected to start at the beginning of September. It will last one month, then the Practice will submit a report to the manufacturers with respect to the efficiency, costs and suitability for use in a General Practice and Primary Care. If the trial is deemed successful, this group would hope to purchase the equipment to provide another facility for the benefit of our patients. SEASONAL WINTER ‘FLU VACCINATIONS Vaccination Clinics will be held on Saturday 23rd September and Saturday 14 October from 9.00am and 1.00pm. Appointments are now available and can be made in the usual way via the surgery. Eligible and at risk patients will receive a reminder on their repeat prescription list and will be invited to make an appointment on either of these days. If you have any concerns about your eligibility or availability of the vaccination, please contact reception. MISSED APPOINTMENTS Last month 43 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment and 61 did not attend their nurse’s appointment, so that’s still 104 patients wasting valuable appointments and time. Please remember if you don’t need it - cancel it! Keep forgetting? Get our text reminder service. A sincere thank you to those who do cancel or apologise. FRIENDS AND FAMILY SURVEY Thank you all those who take part and please continue to do so, we welcome all your comments, because any feedback, good or bad, can help us to continually improve our service. Last month we received 210 patient responses to “Would you recommend our Practice” and the results are as follows: Extremely likely/Likely - 92%; Extremely unlikely/Unlikely - 6%; Unsure/Don’t know - 2%. ‘WALK FOR LIFE’ ACTIVITY PROGRAMME Join us every Thursday morning at 10.30 for a walk around the local area for about an hour or so, and meet old and new friends. Bring your pets as well, they might also enjoy the exercise and make new friends! SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 12.00 noon on Thursday 28th September and from 1.00pm on Wednesday 18th October for staff training. Bank Holiday, Monday 29th August, closed all day. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these times, and of course, please don’t forget to include all the family who may require repeat prescriptions and check when their medication review appointment is due. Should you need to see a Doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 Service via the normal surgery number 821 333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111, to receive non-urgent confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases please dial 999 as normal. A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY! Our Annual Christmas Bazaar will be held on Saturday 18 November. As this is our most popular event tables are highly sought after and are on sale now! So please book early to avoid disappointment, as some have already been sold! LIAISON GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our next meeting, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821049. or email kenself@me.com.

August 2017 Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking? Panna Cotta is a very under-rated Italian pudding – it means “cooked cream” and is just that. The gentle panna cotta is offset by a fruit compote or sauce, and is a delicious yet light pudding. I’ve used gelatine leaves in the recipe, as they give a quicker set and better texture than powder, plus fresh Kent cherries. Not being great at turning things out of moulds, I did mine in little glass ramekin dishes instead.

KEN AND FIONA WELCOME YOU TO

Vanilla Panna Cotta Panna Cotta: 4 leaves of gelatine 12 floz/350ml double cream 12 floz/350ml milk (full fat or semi-skimmed) 1 ½ oz/35g caster sugar 1 pod of vanilla Cherry Compote: ½ lb/220g fresh cherries (preferably) with some extra to decorate small amount of sugar and water generous dash of some kind of fruit liqueur 6-8 ramekin dishes, depending on size First, soak the gelatine in cold water until it goes soft. In a large pan, mix together the cream, milk and sugar. Break open the vanilla pod and scrape out all the little seeds with the point of a knife. Add the seeds to the mixture, plus the pod. Bring the temperature up to a gentle simmer, stirring to stop the milk sticking to the bottom of the pan. Remove the pod. Squeeze out the gelatine leaves and add them to the pan, then take the pan off the heat and stir until the gelatine has dissolved, as you don’t want stringy bits. Pour into a jug, and then into the ramekins. Leave a little room at the top for the cherries. Chill until set – approx 2 hours. Stone the cherries and put them into a pan with a little water, sugar to taste, and Framboise or cherry liqueur. Simmer until the cherries release their delicious dark juice. Allow the cherries to cool before serving. Serve with the cherry compote and the cracked black pepper tuiles. If you make double the amount of cherries, you can put them into the Black Forest Trifle later!

last weekend although I found it quite tiring walking so far in one go, but we did take it quite slowly. The weather was great and McDonalds cold water was very welcome. We met loads of people who mentioned they always read my article and I got lots of pats and strokes, all good!! The only downer really was that the old boy fell ill towards the late afternoon and had to come home early, but he struggled through and helped me write this on Sunday so as we could get it off to print on time.

MINSTER W.I. At our last meeting before our summer break our speaker was Gehad Homsey. He gave us a fascinating talk about the Mercy Ships and their amazing charitable work. This old car ferry had been converted into a floating hospital which had 4 wards, 6 operating theatres and 1 ICU. Before he retired Gehad was an anaesthetist who gave up his free time to work on the Mercy Ship. The boat sails into ports in West Africa and provides free surgery to men, women and children who would otherwise not be able to get this medical care. All the staff on the ship, doctors, nurses, cleaners, cooks etc are MINSTER POST OFFICE volunteers and since 1978 the charity has carried out 79,000 operations.

concerned father of six children, 2 of which are vulnerable and young. The traffic and speeds of cars and especially HGV vehicles in Minster has risen to very dangerous levels. Villagers, including school children, elderly residents, visitors and working men and women are not safe walking or driving around our village any longer. I have observed on many occasions vehicles driving at over 50 mph on Tothill Street, Monkton Road and the High Street. The buses and HGVs do not have enough room to pass pedestrians safely even when the party walking is fully on the pavement. I witness incidents of road rage every day in front of my house, some of which border on breaking civil and criminal law. Please calm the traffic in Minster before someone gets killed.” In addition to the above, cars, buses and HGVs have taken to driving on the pavement to gain more room as they speed up and down Tothill Street at busy times, especially school traffic peak time. It is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured, either through a collision with a vehicle or an incident of road rage. Please let the residents of Minster know that this is a dangerous situation and getting worse by the day. It is the most important issue regarding travelling into and out of our once-safe village. Thanks for your attention and please use your publication to save a child or someone else’s life. Mr P. Allen, a concerned citizen

Minster Matters 15 Traffic Survey, Top of Tothill St Thanet Community Support Partnership August 2017

On Tuesday 18th July between 0700 and 1830 members of the community conducted a traffic survey at the top of Tothill Street to assess the volume of traffic coming into and going out of the village at that location. We hope that this information will inform the Planning Authority and the village in general, about the potential effects of large scale developments, both locally and within Thanet, as well as the expansion of the service area, on the local traffic volumes. The Minster roundabout is in fact the single southern exit from Thanet through which much of the traffic volumes created by any Manston development and additional housing will pass. This will influence Tothill Street and the village. We would like to thank the volunteers who gave of their time to assist in the survey. It can be seen from the table and graphs that there were very nearly 10,000 vehicle movements at the location. Whilst there were expected peaks at certain times it was clear there was a very high consistent level of traffic throughout the period. A snapshot, whilst useful, is only one observation and it is intended to repeat the exercise later in the year for comparison. It is also intended to conduct a village centre survey as time permits. Details will be published on our Facebook page Minstersfuturematters in due course.

We are delighted to announce that the Thanet Community Support Partnership (TCSP) - a project run by the Thanet Volunteer Bureau - has recently received funding from the Big Lottery Fund to help improve the lives of older people in Thanet. These are exciting times for the TCSP, which exists to connect older people in Thanet with the services they need. The Thanet Volunteer Bureau now has four new team members all dedicated to the work of the TCSP (please see our contact details below). Our work has many interesting facets to it: We co-ordinate and maintain what is known as the Central Referrals Service, which is designed to act as the main point of contact for older people’s services in Thanet. So, when we receive a call from a Thanet resident aged 50 or over, who is need, we can refer them to the most appropriate service - whether that be to one of our twelve referral Partners, or to one of our own, in-house services run by the Thanet Volunteer Bureau, including our popular Good Neighbour (befriending) Service, to name but one. We will also be developing a programme of social activities – including the popular weekly “Your Time” sessions on Wednesday afternoons – aimed at reducing the threat of loneliness and social isolation among older people, and strengthening community bonds. Moreover, we would like to build up the Thanet Over Fifties Forum (or “TOFFs” for short), so as to engage, and represent the interests of, older people across the Isle – including the provision of talks on important subjects like pensions, and health and social care provision. Watch this space! If you would like to find out more, we invite you to contact us via the email addresses below, pay us a visit – at Foresters Hall, Meeting Street, Ramsgate, CT11 9RT – or call us on (01843) 590 935. Chris Scutt – Project Coordinator, General Enquiries – chris.scutt@thanetvolunteerbureau.co.uk Rebecca Bullivant – Central Referrals Service & Good Neighbour Service – rebecca.bullivant@thanetvolunteerbureau.co.uk Sarah Hart – Central Referrals Service, Social Activities & “Your Time” – sarah.hart@thanetvolunteerbureau.co.uk Pauline Petitt – Thanet Over Fifties Forum (TOFFs) – pauline.petitt@thanetvolunteerbureau.co.uk
