Short and sweet this month as there is no space to spare. Thank you to all our contributors who really came good by getting their articles and adverts to me early which helped alleviate the stress of losing a day to Minster Show - It was very much appreciated.. We hope you enjoy all the pictures we’ve managed to include and I say a big thank you to the Show’s official photographers and those on the MM team for releasing their images to us so quickly thus giving us a good selection to choose from for this issue. Well that’s about it, just room to ask my usual question -”Where’s Zac?”

Major Teofilo Chagas 1960-2015 Majors Teofilo and Philippa Chagas were Salvation Army Ministers in Minster 1994-1998. Their daughters Stephanie and Debora attended the Primary School and they really immersed themselves in village life. During their ministry the congregation grew so much that the school hall was hired for Sunday worship. Teofilo initiated fund-raising for a new hall also, (with the generous support of Mr Bernard Cole who allowed his premises to be used free of charge), started a Community Shop. Teofilo officially opened the new shop whilst home in England on holiday. When the family were posted to Brazil Teofilo and Philippa worked in Porto Alegre S. Brazil setting up a clinic to serve locals and also opening an outpost corps (church). Posted to Sao Paolo the couple worked on many projects throughout Brazil and their youngest daughter was married in Rio 2 years ago both Debora and husband Mario are entering Officer training in January 2016. Elder daughter Stephanie works for the Army in London and was married on 11th July this year. Sadly 8 years ago Teofilo was diagnosed with myeloma and although he fought with his usual cheerfulness and courage he succumbed to the disease on 22nd April this year. Teofilo was always so encouraging to all he met and he joined the badminton club to integrate with village people (his name is on the honours board). In gratitude for all that Teofilo did for Minster the village would like to purchase an engraved bench in his memory to be placed outside the Community Shop. If you remember Teofilo and would like to contribute there will be donation boxes in Attwells and the Salvation Army Community Shop. Our thoughts and prayers are with Philippa and the girls.

MINSTER BOWLS CLUB Another sad month with the passing of Dick Stott, a former President of the Club. His funeral was well attended by members, and our sympathies are extended to his widow, June. Good news for once, Glynne Hibbert our Chairman, has had his operation and is back home recuperating. We all wish him well. The Open Day was another resounding success, sponsored by Jonathon Cole, 26 teams entered. The Cup was won by "Holdentech" (pictured below), and the Plate by "The Bikers" (pictured on page 7), in both cases cheques were sent to the charities of their choice. Maureen Hedges, Sylvia Davis, and Margaret Griffiths won the Kent Ladies Triples Division 4, they were all awarded their County Badges and Maureen also won Champion of Champions - congratulations ladies. The Club has received a request from Te Awamutu in New Zealand as Paul and Marlene Walker are visiting Ramsgate at the end of July, and have asked to be allowed to try Short-Mat during their stay. We are happy to accommodate them. Finally, if anyone would like to try bowls, on the green, or short-mat, then please ring me on 845 638 or e-mail: brimaur26@gmail.com, and I will be delighted to arrange a session. Coaching can be provided, free of charge, if required.

President, Sarah Eaton-Brown, opened July’s meeting with a special welcome to the evening’s visitors including those from Eastry, Herne and St Nicholas. Following Jerusalem and some announcements, Sarah introduced Wynne Clancy who narrated a “Votes for Women” sketch with a cast of nine, all in stunning costumes. We all learned a great deal more than we had known before about the suffering, persistence and bravery, of those Suffragettes who fought for the vote. Secretary, Liz Shervington, read correspondence which included invitations from other branches and details of various Federation events. Following refreshments, Sarah informed the meeting of various forthcoming events including Minster Show on the following Saturday where Minster WI has a Float, Tombola Stall and an entry in the Co-operative event. Volunteers were requested for help on the day! Sarah also outlined the “Tweak and Twenty” progress; Branches having been given £20 by the East Kent Federation of WIs had to then fund raise to increase the total. Minster WI raised over £100 as a result of various events, such as Jackie Thompson’s Strawberry Tea in her garden and a Draw for a meal out etc. The EKFWI will take half and our half will be added to funds. Thanks were given to everyone for their efforts as always. The busy meeting ended early so artistic preparation for the Minster WI float could be completed – all very exciting. Forthcoming events: 8 September: WI Meeting, Village Hall, 7.30pm, Ralph Hoult ‘A talk with photos’ 15 September: New Members Evening, 7.00pm, Village Hall Committee Room 26 September: Minster Centenary, Afternoon Tea at St Augustine’s, Westgate

THANK YOUS This is a thank you letter I didn't think I would write. On 29 June I had a major operation at Canterbury Hospital, and due to their skill and dedicated nursing I came through. Our praise and thanks also go to the wonderful doctors and nurses at Minster Surgery to whom I shall be for ever grateful. During my recovery I have been overwhelmed by the number of cards, phone calls and visits wishing me well. I didn't know I had so many friends! Special thanks to the folk in St. Mildred’s Road and Monkton Road who have made sure we haven't starved or been late for hospital appointments. You have made life so much easier for both Gwen and myself. I am making good but slow progress. Thank you so much. Glynne Hibbert Thank you from Cliffe’s the Butchers Firstly, as many of you will know we have been collecting for Great Ormond Street Hospital for a few years since Paul's daughter had to have some treatment there. We have recently passed the £2,500 mark with GIRLS WORLD the help of the 'change pot' and the weekly lottery that over 50 BEAUTY SALON of our customers support, giving 10% of its fund to the cause. Thank you to everyone for this. Extra Clinics Secondly we would like to thank those that helped us with our window drama on the night it was smashed. You know who you Semi Permanent are and it was very much appreciated. Make-up On the subject of Great Ormond Street Paul will be doing a 'virtual ride' from Land’s End to John O'Groats starting on 1st Botox and Fillers September on his exercise bike. Sponsorship would be very nice and there will be a competition to guess how long it will take. 01843 826 308 Thanks again 70 High Street, Minster Andy, Paul and Steve www.girlsworldminster.com

MINSTER PLAYHOUSE PROMPT CORNER

At Minster Playhouse we welcome keen new people whether to act or on the technical side, so why not join us? If you are interested, please contact the Playhouse through Niki Kelly on 07852 271 614. The Autumn Play (See poster on page 24) A Bolt from the Blue is now in rehearsal, and we are still laughing! This funny, enjoyable, and very different play will run from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 September so make a date in your diary not to miss this one! The Box Office will be open from 1 August on 07501 894 381. Summer Fair (See pictures on page 21) On Saturday 4 July we held our popular Summer Fair for Charity in the gardens of the Bell Inn. With stalls, games, and entertainers headlined by the local Rock Choir, there was fun for the whole family. The event was well attended and the Rock Choir were very supportive of our fund-raising as well as providing superb singing that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present. The Choir drew from the ranks of several local Choirs including Thanet, Canterbury, Deal, Folkestone, and Ashford and the Playhouse thanks them and their choir-master Jonathan for their performance and their support. This year the Playhouse is working to provide funds for Polycystic Kidney Disease research, and the proceeds from the Fair will go towards that worthwhile goal, so your support is really appreciated. www.minsterplayhouse.co.uk info@minsterplayhouse.co.uk

When 2nd Garlinge Scouts arrived at the Marshside Camp in Watchester Lane, Minster on Saturday 4 July to learn some basic outdoor skills, they were completely unaware as to who their instructor for the day would be. Skip (Richard Horne) had kept the identity of the special guest a closely guarded secret, leading to much speculation as to who it might be. None were disappointed though when Bushcraft expert Ray Mears arrived! A little in awe of 'the man off the telly' the initial stunned silence soon abated as Mr Mears shared his knowledge with infectious enthusiasm, expertly demonstrating and explaining many skills including fire lighting, signalling, man-made shelters and what to pack in your backpack. The Troop where given the opportunity to have a go themselves and even challenged to put up a couple of very unfamiliar tarps! Many, many thanks to Ray Mears for taking time out of his busy schedule to pop down to Marshside. A truly inspirational day and a fantastic and invaluable introduction to Bushcraft with memory's to last a lifetime!

News from Minster War Memorial Fund The oak panels that fit onto the original memorial have now been made and have been taken to Faversham for sign writing by highly recommended sign writer Gary Wells. He hopes to bring them back to the village by the end of August. We are hoping for a unveiling in September within the church, details will be published in Minster Matters nearer the time. Thanks for your continued support. Steve Philpott

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION News past and future: The Anniversary Day in Armbouts Cappel was very pleasurable. Those travelling by coach recommend this mode of travel for future visits, so please bear that in mind. Music and food was constant all afternoon and a funfair near the square kept the little ones amused too. For the few who decided to stay overnight, in order to see the format of the evening, there was no disappointment. Dancing ensued for a few hours followed by a magnificent firework display at 11pm. Our thanks go to our friends in France, 438 Squadron Air Cadet Band and the Wantsum Morris Men, all of whom added to the entertainment of the day. Dates for your Diary: 1 August - a Race Night at Minster Royal British Legion, starting at 8pm where the entry is free. Come and join the fun, take a chance on winning a raffle prize and bring your own nibbles. 6 September - A Day of Giants Parade!! This is the biggest event that the Association have ever organised and one which we hope everyone in the village will enjoy as it is very unique. We have secured around 20 Giants, (some from France), some bands and some walking entertainment. The Giants are very friendly, but very big, the one from Liverpool reaching 18ft in height. This will be a spectacular parade, it will leave the Holiday Inn at Midday and wend its way down Tothill Street, turning into Fairfield Road and down Greenhill Gardens, then along Freemans Road, out onto Monkton Road and onwards down past the Church to its conclusion at Parkminster. We hope to have an appreciative audience lining the route. Parkminster will be open to the public from Midday for food, drinks, stalls, a raffle and entertainment. The Giants will arrive in this area around 1.30pm and then be on display for all to see. It promises to be a wonderful day but we need sunshine and lots of support. Please help us make this a day that Minster will remember. If anyone is interested in hiring a pitch for a stall, then these will be available to villagers at ÂŁ5 a time. Please call Malcolm on 01843 447 706 for further details. Thank you

Ageless Thanet

We want to change people’s perceptions of ageing, and show people that growing old is positive and to be embraced. We want Thanet’s older people (50+) to make their voices heard and will help them to achieve this by working together, in partnership, and with the community. We want to make Thanet a great place to grow old. Ageless Thanet Champions are an integral and vital part of this project. We are looking to recruit 46 Champions across Thanet, in each ward, to be the eyes and ears of the project. You’ll be part of a team of Champions across Thanet that are looking to improve older peoples’ opportunities in the community. We want Champions to be proud members of their community, good communicators and people who want to help others. The role will be very varied and interesting, and you’ll be able to get involved in a lot of different things. You will be an ambassador for Ageless Thanet, and be someone that can really make a difference to older peoples’ lives. You’ll be given training and support, and have the opportunity to really make a different difference in your community. Ageless Thanet is a £3m Big Lottery funded project (part of the national ‘Fulfilling Lives: Ageing Better’ programme). The project is a partnership of voluntary, statutory and private sector organisations that have come together to improve physical and mental wellbeing, reduce loneliness and social isolation and make Thanet a great place to grow old. Moving On My last year in Minster has gone faster than I ever imagined and before I leave everything behind I’d like to share a few memories. To start it off, I remember when I was in year 4 my friends were trying to help me hang upside down on the tyres. I was finally upside down and feeling great when our lunch bell went. Apparently they didn’t have time to get me off and have lunch, so they just left me there, HANGING UPSIDE DOWN ON A TYRE SWING!! Also, at Hindleap Warren I had the bottom bunk, however that didn’t stop me from falling off the top bunk (TWICE). It all started when my best friend asked to speak to me so I went up to her bunk and when I came down yes I landed face flat on the floor. I went back up just to tell them that I didn’t fall off. And yes as you’d expect on

August 2015 My year in year 4 In year four it was a lot of fun because I had a lovely teacher and some lovely teaching assistants. I will definitely miss my teachers but I think my new teacher will be just as good. This year lots of new people have joined our class. I have enjoyed all of the clubs I have been to like gymnastics, netball and journalist. In year four the teacher was brilliant. Nothing stopped us going. Did not leave us hanging. In year four none of our teachers let us down. Going will be hard. Over all it was the best year ever. By Madeleine Taylor Journalist Club And What I Like About It! What I like the most about journalist club, is doing the writing , playing games at the end, and most of all actually being with Miss Daw, Ray and everyone!!! After the summer holidays I will be going up into year 5. So excited to know who will be teaching us next! I think my best article was about the Little Princess Trust. By Tomasin

my way back down I did it again . My time at Minster Primary School is coming to a halt Zac’s Musings but it has been the best time of my life. All of the teachers, Nearly recovered now from my recent operation although TA‘s and other staff are amazing and I have the best the muscles are still a bit weak in that shoulder which causes friends I could ask for. So thank you and goodbye. me to hobble a little after I’ve been lying on it for a while. By Harriet Taylor Talk in our house has turned again to the subject of

holidays - the dreaded ‘H’ word again!!

My Year In Year 5 Looks like we’re probably off on an autumnal week away In year 5 it has been really cool, I have learnt lots of new in a place called Wiltshire - let’s hope that’s not too far things. In year 5 I have really liked my Maths and English, away, I really don’t fancy a long car journey. I also heard mention of canals but I think we’re only going 2 weeks ago we did loads of activities let me tell you. to look at one not actually Monday=Fire safety talk spend any time on it. I don’t Tuesday=had someone come and teach us for P.E. mind walking beside them it’s Wednesday=made flat bread and tasted lots of being on a boat I don’t enjoy. different fruit. In year 4 we’ve learnt a lot. Nothing stopped us in year 4. Don’t laugh the teacher kept on teasing. In year 4 we had a nice time. Good behaviour we had. Only once were we bad.

they’ve gone to bed though - love them all really, but please just in small doses. Had a hair cut last week not done my street cred any favours but at least I can see without having to squint through tufts of hair.

August 2015 POEM When I fly, I feel like a butterfly, My wings and I, Love to fly, Like a pretty butterfly, I flap my wings all the time, That is why I cry, Happy cry. By Ella Brewer Life Cycle Of A Frog The life cycle of a frog is in order of how it’s born; 1 frogspawn is little balls of jelly each with a tiny black egg, 2 the little eggs turn into black tadpoles, 3 the black tadpoles then transform into tiny green tadpoles with legs and a little tail, 4 the tiny green tadpoles then lose their tails and turn into a medium frog called a froglet 5 lastly all of those 4 steps lead to an adult frog. HAVE YOU NOTICED THIS ICON ON YOUR WINDOWS COMPUTER ? (It appears on the Taskbar near the clock) Have you wondered what it’s for? Have you clicked on it? Yes - No - well for those who have wondered but haven’t clicked on it, it’s for pre-ordering your free upgade to Windows 10 which is due for general release on 29 July - YES Microsoft are offering their latest incarnation to some users FOC no strings attached and I’ll try to enlighten you as to who will and who will not be eligible. Now before you say but I haven’t got the icon on my computer, it only appears on PCs running a genuine activated copy of Windows 7 or 8.1. If you are still using XP or Vista you will not receive a free update but instead you will be expected to pay - just how much it will cost is still open to speculation but at present it is rumoured it will probably be £99 - likewise you won’t see it if you are still running Windows 8 as that too isn’t supported by the new operating system, however you can still download and intall the free upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 and then you will be eligible to get the free Windows 10 upgrade.

Minster Matters

23

This offer is expected to be made for just one year from product release, so you have plenty of time to upgrade, however if you miss the one year target you too will be expected to pay. It may be you are running Windows 7 or 8.1 and you still don’t see the icon on your taskbar, this is because either the correct system updates have not been installed or there is a problem on your PC that prevents it activating. There are cures for this available on the Internet but I’d recommend you obtain help and advice from someone whom you trust to obtain the fix and get it sorted for you. If you need any help with this but don’t know someone you can trust to do it then please feel free to give us at MM a call as we’d be only too willing to come and sort it for you. Likewise if after the 29 July when you’ve received the download from Microsoft you don’t feel confident enough to complete the installation then we’d be pleased to help you with that too. On a separate note, did you know Fibre Optic Superfast Broadband is now available in the village - what a difference if makes to my connection and it should make transferring files amongst editorial team members so much quicker which will certainly help us to get the magazine put together with less hassle. LETS - Local Exchange Trading System Did you know there is a local LETS group in Thanet? Named RAMLETS it has been in existence since 2014 but is only now starting to ‘take-off’. What is LETS? I hear you ask - well it s a communitybased barter system. Members pool their skills and resources to form a local network, which allows them to trade goods and services without using money. Instead of using pounds and pence, RAMLETS has its own 'currency' called 'RAMS'. It is one of over 450 similar systems around the country. What can it offer you? Here are some typical ways in which members use the LETS system: Items for Sale, Services, Events and Recommendations, e.g: Computer help, such as networking and program setup; Dog walking and feeding; Waiting in for a delivery; Providing food for an event; Face Painting; Proofreading; Translation help; Cookery classes; Yoga/Pilates; Seedlings, Vegetables and plants; Conversation; Shopping; Handywoman/Handyman; Musical performance; Reiki; Decluttering; Babysitting; Gardening; Transport; Lifts; Assembling flat pack furniture; Ironing; VHS conversion etc. This list is unending and it’s possibleyou could benefit from such a system, if you think you could then it’s simple to sign up, just complete the application form here: www.ramsgatelets.org.uk/join.php
