Tammy Needs A Home! Poor Tammy was abandoned in the driveway of one of TAG Pet Rescue Sanctuary’s volunteers and has been at the sanctuary for a year now. She is a lovely cat - about 4 years old, very affectionate and would love a new home with no other cats and with someone who could give her all the love and affection she so deserves after being dealt such a cruel start. If you think you may be able to help Tammy, please call 01843 822931. She would be most grateful.

Tuesday 20th April at 7 p.m. Library & Neighbourhood Centre 4a Monkton Road, Minster

The Meeting will commence with a Presentation on the EAST KENT ACCESS WORKS by Kent County Council Members of the Public are invited to attend to hear the presentation and ask questions about the above project Tea and Coffee will follow the presentation The Annual Parish Meeting will then continue and the public will be able to ask Councillors questions about any other issues in the Village

April 2010 The ‘E’ Team EDITORIAL Is it me or is Spring actually beginning to break ? We seem to have had our fair share of cold wet weather just lately, in fact myself and my 2 neighbours had to sandbag our back doors just Ray a couple of weeks ago, so it is really nice to see the sun when it pops it’s head out. Firstly this month I feel I must make an apology to our local bobbies, who took my mentions of ‘police’ last month to mean them personally, when actually I was using the term in a general Amy sense and not trying to decry our local lads. Sorry guys didn’t mean to get your backs up, I’ll think before I write next time !! I also received a very irate letter from someone who I presume is a resident, but not really worthy of any reply as they Brenda weren’t open enough to give me their name. But to answer one of their points, with regard to our “Poor Parking” pictures, they aren’t meant to suggest that anyone is doing anything illegal that’s why we only label them as “Poor Parking”(and we always Eve remove number plates if they show,) they are just to show the bad parking that we constantly endure in the village, a point which was also mentioned in the letter and which the writer said no one ever did anything about. Diane Well we feel our pictures do just that, we do do something about vehicles we see, we shame them with a picture in the hope they don’t do it again !! I’m sure most drivers would prefer that than to get a ticket from the police for parking on corners, across footpaths or abandoning them on bus stops or just out in the Nora road causing a traffic flow problem, and believe me we’d also love to see the bus not using the estate. Gripe over. Now would you like a bit of light relief, have you seen that advert where the elderly couple are discussing the Sue purchase of an item they won’t name but it goes up the stairs. Well I’m not crippled yet (maybe that could change if I take more poor parking pic’s though ?) but I have just acquired one of those items via the Freegle Thanet site, that I run, and already it has been a godsend transporting some heavy items both up and down the stairs. When I told the Community Warden I’d got it installed he had a real chuckle. Dog fouling continues to be what most villagers moan at us about, especially in Gas Alley, Domneva Road and of course the Rec. We always pass on your concerns and we hope eventually someone will get caught and fined, it might make others stop and think. That’s it, where’s Zac today ?

TRADING STANDARDS Reports have been received from Kent residents who have had “CSS Childrens Support Society” charity donation bags posted through their letter boxes. They ask residents to fill the bags with items they wish to donate to the charity – such as unwanted clothes, toys and bedding. The bags quote their Registered Charity Number as 526305, but this is not a valid number and CSS is believed to be a bogus charity. Please do not make donations to this bogus charity. Always ensure that your donations are going to reputable charities. You can check charity details by contacting the Charity Commission on 0845 3000 218 or by going to their website www.charity-commission.gov.uk Please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or go to www.consumerdirect.gov.uk if you receive one of these charity bags, or have any further information about any bogus charities. Kent Trading Standards wish to hear from anyone who has booked a boating holiday on a ‘Luxury Yacht’ in Alicante, Spain through a company by the name of Dream Catchers purporting to be based in Sevenoaks. Information suggests that the holidays do not exist and the company is not responding to attempts to contact them. Please contact 01732 525291 if you have any information regarding the company. Please call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or go to www.consumerdirect.gov.uk if you need further advice on your consumer rights, or you want to report and traders you have concerns about.

RESOLVED: That it be agreed in principle to expend some of the money of the Christmas lights and that the amount to be spent be agreed at the next meeting. Editor’s note: Slightly disappointed that Is it my fault? this doesn’t make any mention of the WiFi (or my master’s) I am a doggie access point which MM originally asked the I hope I don’t get fined, Parish Council for, and which received 50% For all of the mess that, of the vote as shown above. April 2010 Running the Paris Marathon for QEQM Hospital

Four energetic consultant surgeons from QEQM hospital are taking on a new challenge. Gynaecologist Zoe Woodward, and orthopaedic surgeons Andrew Smith, Richard Slack and Mark Cornell are running in the Paris Marathon on April 11th. The four are seeking sponsorship for this 42 kilometre endeavour to raise funds for the QEQM hospital’s League of Friends. The League’s current project is the purchase of new furniture for the Walmer outpatient department which is being renovated. Many patients attend clinics every week and will benefit from the improvements. Next, the League will be replacing many of the bedside armchairs throughout QEQM hospital. It is important for patients to have a chair that is comfortable and the right height, especially after undergoing joint replacement surgery. Money raised sponsoring Zoe, Andrew, Richard, and Mark will support this project. The League’s chairman, Jeremy Voizey said, “I am delighted that our surgeons are running to raise funds for the League. The more money we raise, the more we can do to improve the comfort and care of patients in our hospital.” The runners will follow a route through the streets of Paris, beginning at the Champs Elysee and finishing near the Arc de Triomphe. To sponsor the runners, you can phone the League of Friends on 01843 234507 and request a sponsorship form (please add Gift Aid if applicable), or you can sponsor them online at www.justgiving.com/qeqmhospital-lof.

Mouth-watering aromas wafted through the Village Hall at the March meeting, when Tina Cesbron from The Chai Stop spoke about the business of making curries, and brought samples for us to try. Members had been asked to bring along favourite recipes, and Sarah Eaton-Brown kindly made her recipe for fudge, which was much appreciated. We had previously made a collection of money and items for ‘Support our Soldiers’ Grab Bags, and Beryl Ravensdale plus two colleagues from Whitstable WI attended the meeting to receive the donations. As well as six other visitors, we welcomed four new members to our institute. Looking ahead, ideas for the next Dabble Day were requested. At the Acol Group Meeting attended by several members, it was Minster’s turn to run the raffle, and give a report of last year’s activities. We were then treated to an excellent talk about the life of women in Japan, and shown examples of clothing and shoes, which we were able to handle and examine. Don’t forget the Wine & Wisdom evening on 10th April see separate advert on page 22.

April 2010 Flower Show Reminiscing The Minster Show Committee are looking for interesting facts, figures and pictures to use on their brand new website. The site is undergoing construction at this time and it is proposed to have the site launch on Saturday 8th May which is also Show Launch Day. You can help us by relating to us your memories, good or bad, of past shows, or by looking through your old photo albums and loaning us your treasured pictures/slides. We are happy to receive written stories/memories or we will come to you and record them audibly if you would prefer. With pictures/slides we would like to borrow them for a very short while to scan them into our computer and then return them to you. Even better would be to have names to go with any persons that they show, although we are happy to receive pictures/slides that are “unnamed”, such as those recently published in Minster Matters. We are also interested in finding images of past Carnival Queens and their Courts, Show Princesses etc, in fact anything and everything to do with the show in days gone by. Please contact a Show Committee member or the Editor of this magazine if you can help in any way, no matter how small that may be. Help us to make the website something Minster can be proud of, we’re waiting to hear from you. Editor’s Note: To all those reminiscent's, take a look at the photograph in the centre page and see if you recognise anyone!

Local Praise for Minster Matters Online I do not often visit MM’s site but have done so this morning only to find a wealth of information you have added since I last logged on, so I thought I’d reply to your request for feedback and say that I think the magazine is terrific and I would like to congratulate you all on a very professional and informative magazine. I think Minster is very lucky to have such a dedicated team working to keep the residents informed of all that the village has to offer, which is quite a lot. Long may you reign and thank you on behalf of many of my acquaintances who look forward to the magazine every month, but do not have access to the Internet and probably don’t get around to saying ‘thanks’ personally. April 2010 Kent Wildlife Gardening Awards 2010 After another long, cold winter, signs of spring are starting to appear, which means there’s no better time than now to start thinking about entering your garden into the Kent Wildlife Gardening competition. The Kent Wildlife Trust wants to know, are you wild about your garden? If you’ve got a garden that attracts wildlife, why not show it off and enter it into this year’s competition? The Kent Wildlife Trust, Royal Horticultural Society, Wildlife Trusts and local authorities across Kent are working together to inspire people to take action for wildlife through gardening. This competition, as well as a garden centre approval scheme and other educational events and projects aims to create awareness for the importance of gardening to our local wildlife and to link many small gardens into a ‘Living Landscape’. If you’d like to enter your garden into the competition, please visit www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk/our-work/wild-about-gardens/ and enter by 30th June 2010.

East Kent Alpine Garden Society’s Garden Safari The East Kent Alpine Garden Society’s Garden Safari is on Sunday 18th April from 11am to 5pm. Featured gardens are located across East Kent from Faversham to Whitstable, Canterbury, Wingham and Walmer, and will show woodland perennials at their best, plants from ‘down under’ and over 60 Alpine sinks. Ticket and map is £3.50 for entry to all 10 gardens featured. For more information, contact Tim Ingram on 01795 535919, or visit www.alpinegardensociety.net/ groups/East-Kent/Safari/

Visit the Minster Bowls Club Open Days Saturday 24th April, 11.00am-3.00pm Saturday 1st May, 11.00am-3.00pm At the beginning of each outdoor bowling season, we like to offer members of the public, the opportunity to call for a chat at the bowling green and new pavilion on the Minster recreation field. Not only do we offer free bowling tuition, but we can inform you about all the opportunities there are to bowl in friendly games against other clubs, fun roll-ups with club members and, as you progress, the chance to play in league teams and other competitive games. The green is open for play seven days a week from 10am until dusk. The outdoor season closes at the end of September when many members transfer their interest to indoor short mat bowls in our pavilion. This is played mainly in the mornings and evenings from October to April. Again, we have club championship competitions, fun roll-ups, matches against other clubs (both at home and away) and league matches. You can play for fun or you may be a competitive person - there are opportunities for both. The club also has a thriving social membership side with our entertainment team putting on many events including a barn dance, quiz evenings, race nights, and other fun nights. Over eighty members attend the Christmas dinner. We have monthly Sunday lunches during the winter months that are very popular. This is your chance to meet others in the community and make new friends. Our address is Ray Razzell Pavilion, Molineaux Road, Minster, CT12 4DN. Approach the recreation ground from opposite Ben’s Londis shop. You might also like to contact Brian East in Monkton (tel. 825475) or Glynne Hibbert in Minster (tel 821221), or just turn up!

Dear Residents of Minster I am attached to the Armbouts Cappel Twinning Committee. I have been reading the report on the Minster Twinning Association in your Minster Matters December/January 2010 issue. I was very surprised to find that the majority of the population of Minster had lost interest in the Twinning and could not form a Committee to save the Twinning from folding up. Everyone on the French side and on the English side have worked very hard to keep it alive. You will find from the different pages and cuttings that I have enclosed, (available from MM Editor - if required) information on various visits over the years. The Associations that are existing in Armbouts Cappel, I myself and Monsieur Jean Bonduelle received a delegation of Scouts in 2001, we have school exchanges which are very important these days, I also have regular visits from the Royal British Legion to attend our different ceremonies in the course of a year. I had a very good friend in Minster, his name was John Lynch until his passing away. I am still in contact with his family. John always supplied delegations for our ceremonies. I have always been extremely grateful over this and his kindness shown to us over the many years that I knew him. A charming man, he worked like myself with another friend of mine in Ramsgate keeping the Military Liaison alive, he always believed like us that Exchanges and Twinning between different Towns, Villages and Associations of different countries was good for the moral. We must try and keep this Twinning alive. God bless you Dear Friends. Sincerely Jack G.C. Squire France

Going Back in Time. The rough road as we called it, beside the new Housing Estate, was our way to School. We walked through the artichokes that were taller than us, before Butts Field development. Seeing the Head Teacher Mrs Budds, going to School, driving her little car, known as The Greengage, and the arrival of small bottles of milk that came in crates, for each child. Taking off over the marshes or the Drove, across the railway to the river Stour, or a walk round the lanes. Franks Café next to the men only Molineux Institute, now the Village Hall, Blackmans fish and chip shop now the Indian Restaurant, later came Kings Café now Mortons Fork, every one of the venues down by the church, where we all congregated, The Guides, run by Mrs Black then Ruby London, The Youth Club with its big old fire in the middle of the room, run by Dennis Golder, and later by Frank and Pam Gillett. We all gathered in the cold, watching the Cadets in the school playground, being put through their paces. The Rec., where all kind of sports were held, and every one gathered to watch., Sunday School, not only in the Church, but in a little house in Prospect Road with the owner Miss Simpkins, Apart from the shopping area, the shops, in someone’s living room. One in Augustine Road, which was Razzell’s, and Ashley’s in Prospect Road, Also remembering the deep snow drift at the top of Prospect Road. We knew nothing about illness and ailments, our Grandparents, were not ill they just passed away. These are a few memories, I am sure some Minster residents will remember.

April 2010 COMPUTER CORNER (I’M BACK!!) I know it’s been a while since I’ve written a computer corner, but magazine space has been extremely limited and there were always more worthwhile articles that needed to be included first. I’ve had quite a few enquiries recently about web-sites that appear to have scanned your computer for viruses and then tell you that they have found a goodly number, and are asking you to pay for the software to remove them. DON’T !! This is just a scam to get you to part with your money. You probably don’t have any malicious viruses and their software definitely won’t remove them. What it will do though is lighten your bank balance somewhat and possibly infect your computer into the bargain !. If you’re being plagued by this type of site then it is highly likely you do have an infection but it is of their making and you should seek help to get it removed, if your own antivirus program can’t do it for you. Please don’t say at this stage “but I don’t have an antivirus program, or mine isn’t up to date”. If you are using the Internet without adequate security you are leaving your computer wide open to all sorts of problems not all of which you will become aware of, except that you may notice a rapid drop in performance and see that your hard disk light is working overtime, which could well signify that your machine has become a “bot” in a large chain of infected pc’s, churning out spam or ‘denial of service attacks’ without you being aware that anything is wrong, because your machine has been taken over by some unscrupulous individual who wishes to cause havoc to others and insecure computers are their life blood. Whilst mentioning Antivirus programs I’ve also received calls about AVG now updating to version 9 and the fact that it is no longer free - well it is still free - you just have to look hard for the none too conspicuous links on the AVG website. My recommendation to those who wish to download the free version is to enter free.avg.com into your web browser address bar (not a Google or Yahoo search bar) when the site opens look for the heading “Download and Upgrade” click ‘Download AVG Free’ - now on the next page scroll down to the Free “DOWNLOAD “ button (big and red) click this - on the next page locate and click the tab that says “Installation Files” now click and download the Free Edition (note the file size is about 79mb) don’t click the AVG Download Manager (which is only 1mb) - locate the downloaded file on your computer and double click it to install version 9. That’s all folks !! If I don’t get hijacked I may be back next month !!! Itsma Hobby

Minute 245 – Village of the Year Award Cllr. Mrs Thomson enquired whether a response had been received and the Clerk responded that she was still awaiting information about retaining the signs and the re-instatement of the sign that had been damaged. East Kent Access Phase 2 – Closure of Footpaths The Clerk reported that KCC had advised of proposals to temporarily close footpaths T37, T39 and TR 32 during the construction works for the Access Road. Cllr. Day reported that he had raised concerns with the public rights of way officer (KCC) and the Clerk undertook to raise this matter with Geoff Cripps, the KCC officer who had addressed the Parish Council on the access road proposals and obtain the necessary maps of the closure. KALC would be asked whether such closures can be made without proper consultation. iii) Tothill Street – The road is to be re-surfaced within the next few months. v) H2B Site – Complaints had been received about the closeness of the front doors of some dwellings close to the Bumpy Track. It was agreed to refer this matter to the Planning Committee for consideration and a possible site visit. 264. Community Warden and Policing Reports P.C. Reed reported that there had been 9 reported crimes during the month of February and gave details of the incidents. Members were also advised that there had been 57 calls logged from the Village and these mainly related to vehicles and accidents. He also referred to the report later on the agenda (Minute 265 refers) in respect of anti social behaviour particularly in Molineux Road and graffiti problems in Gas Alley. In respect of Gas Alley the Clerk was asked to discuss with TDC whether lighting could be installed in the alley and Cllr. Day enquired whether the lights could be provided from the highways improvement fund and Cllr. Hibberd undertook to investigate. Members were advised that Steve Taylor the Community Warden was on sick leave and that Alan McDonald, the Warden from St. Nicholas at Wade would undertake warden duties within Minster. Finally the Kim Burgess referred to a “Kill Your Speed” sign and asked whether Council would wish to purchase any for the Village. RESOLVED: That the Clerk seeks funding from TDC/KCC with a view to installing a lighting unit in Gas Alley, (B) the question of the purchase of a “Kill your Speed” sign be referred to the Operations Committee for consideration of the possible siting; and the Clerk to arrange a meeting between P.Cs Burgess and Reed and Cllr. Mrs. Thomson to discuss general policing matters in the Village. 265.Molineux Road Play Area The Council were informed of anti social behaviour from youths aged between 13 to 20 on the Molineux Road play area. Police had been involved with complaint to deal with the disturbance which often went on until 1 a.m. Members advised that the playground had been provided for children up to the age of 11 years. It was suggested that the problem may be alleviated if the fencing was raised in height and the playground was locked over night. RESOLVED: That the report be noted and that the Clerk obtain quotations to allow for raising the height of the fencing and for the securing of the gate and that the matter be further considered at a future meeting. Roger GALE Conservative Will work for Minster, Monkton & Manston

Who passed away at the age of 92 on the 18th February in The Pilgrims Hospice. His funeral was held at Thanet Crematorium on 5th March. Les’ family; Andrew, Sue, Christine, Barry and David would like to thank all his friends and neighbours for their very kind messages of sympathy and condolence and also for the flowers and generous donations which will be split between the Hospice and the RNIB. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Minster Playhouse A word from Ruby...... Being dead just doesn’t suit me, darlings. I was a star, snuffed out at my brightest hour. It wasn’t my time to go and if the person who did this to me thinks I’m going to take it lying down, they can think again. Now know I was no saint (and if you’re in any doubt you can ask my not so devoted husband Edward) but really; being found dead at a party with an empty glass by your corpse is just so tacky. So here’s the plan, sweeties. Round up the suspects and give them a night they won’t forget in a hurry. Frances, Hedley, Alex; they might look like a bunch of harmless old luvvies but I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them and it wouldn’t surprise me if they know a thing or two about my sad demise. This could be my finest performance yet, my chance to go out with a bang, and if I were you I wouldn’t miss the chance to witness my revenge… With special effects and laugh a minute lines, this is one not to be missed! This show is directed by Scott Steele. 12th – 15th May and Tickets £6.00 and £5.00 Available from Terry on 01843 220208

For many of us there can be times when life is particularly challenging and it seems hard to find a balance between competing priorities such as work, relationships or our own need to find meaning or spiritual growth. From a Person Centred perspective, whenever there is resistance or 'stuckness', there is also potential, new awareness to be explored and integrated and the opportunity for personal development, healing and growth.

Minster Matters Editors this month Helen Birch and Sophie Stevens

Horseying around! My friend Helen and I went down to my stables in the Christmas holiday to groom and look after our horses. We had lots of fun playing in the snow. Also we had fun with our horses and now we have moved our horses to a nicer place in Preston, hopefully we will have more fun. Where our horses are now we can do some sponsored rides for charity, like at Easter time we are doing an Easter egg hunt on horse back in Preston. I have been with horses along time but my best friend Sophie has grown up with horses all of her life. By Sophie Stevens and Helen Birch!!

Alice In Wonderland

April 2010 The Jedward Bird What is the difference between jedward and the jedward bird? There is none apart from one being slightly brighter than the other I.E the jedward bird. By Oliver and Jasper.

Mr Danton As all of you should know, Miss Jackson left Orange Class before the Christmas holidays and we have been taught by Mr Packer and Mr Wookey. Mrs Stone (our head teacher) has found a new permanent teacher for Orange Class and his name is Mr Danton. Orange Class has met him and we all think he is extremely nice. He used to be a policeman before becoming a teacher. We all hope that he is going to like us and we promise to give him a nice, warm welcome! By Libby Thomson

NETBALL On Saturday 27th February the netball team went to a tournament. There was 4 teams, including us, and we had to play all of them twice. The schools were Newington, North down, Clifftonville and Us! We played each of them and won both of the matches with Newington and Clifftonville but sadly we lost both times to North Down but we did score one goal against them and we managed to get in the Finals. We sadly lost the finals but we did come 2nd and received Gold Medals! There are 7 players and they each have a position. There is: Goal Attack - Helen, Wing Attack - Keeley, Goal shooter - Charleigh, Wing Defence - Megan, Goal keeper - Jason, Centre - Thomas and Goal defence - Libby! By Keeley Allen and Helen Birch!!!!!

SPEED STACKS On the 17th of March 2010 some of year 5 and 6 from Minster Primary School went to a speed stack competition at Monkton School. We got the coach from St Mary’s Church in Minster and when we arrived at Monkton School we went into the hall and got into groups of 4 or 5. Speed stack is a fun activity where you have to stack cups in all different ways. I had a great day and would like to thank Mr Blyth for organising the trip. By Emma Holland

On Monday 15th March some children got chosen to go to Marlow Academy for a Thanet Sports Festival. We all met up outside St.Mary’s Church at 8:10 and when we arrived there were 7 schools. These were Upton A, Upton B, Us (Minster C of E Church of England Primary School), St Lawrence, Garlinge, St Peters and Cliftonville. We did lots of events such as; javelin, speed bounce, vertical jump, long jump, chest pass, relay races and lots of different running races! All together we came second ............ to last! However, we all had good fun and enjoyed ourselves. By Keeley Allen

My Pet Giant African Land Snail - Bary Bary is a giant African land snail, he likes to eat cucumber but he is very fussy because he only eats it with the skin taken off. He doesn’t like spinach for some reason. He likes to go in his Easter island house because of the shade. By Nathan Munday

My Cat Shady My cat Shady is a very mad cat that runs around the house and rolls on the carpet. He likes to attack the other cats sometimes. He also likes to have a rub on the belly, but when he has had enough he attacks you. He loves pretending my dad is a train, because he jumps on his back and rides around all the time. He loves me because when I am looking out of my window, I hear a sound, and he jumps up to the window! By Scott

My Last Year at Minster School I will miss Minster primary when I leave but everyone says you must move on in your life. Not everyone in my year is going to the same school as me sadly. I am going to Sandwich technology school it is really cool there because you get to do loads of things that you can enjoy like sports etc. I will also miss the teachers but most of all I am completely dreading the leavers service because year 6 sing a sad song and everyone cries. By Sophie Christina Stevens!!
