Just as the cold weather goes hand-in-hand with crockpots, canning jars frequently become countertop staples in times of uncertainty. Featuring historic objects from Minnetrista’s collection, this original exhibition will explore the history of canning during times of crisis. Visitors will learn more about the ancient and global art of food preservation and explore how wars, pandemics, and economic struggles have transformed canning from an ordinary mode of cooking into a form of emergency planning for Americans across the decades.

In the height of the Great Depression in Waco, Texas, Lillian Beckett and her two young daughters are left to fend for themselves while her husband searches for work elsewhere. As Lillian prepares their meager garden harvest for winter canning, she faces a difficult choice: whether to use a special Orphan Jar—designated for donations to the local children’s home—or keep it for her own family. With no money and no job prospects for her husband, that single jar could be the difference between survival and starvation. Bounty, inspired by a Ball jar from the Minnetrista Heritage Collection, delves into the significance of canning and food preservation as a means of both self-care and community support in times of dire need.
