Welcome to Minnetrista Museum & Garden’s 2022 annual report! In the following pages, we celebrate the organization’s accomplishments from 2022, sharing some of our favorite stories from the year. As a supporter of Minnetrista, we hope this report offers you a glimpse into the impact your generosity has made on our organization and the communities we serve.

Speaking of generosity, this year’s report looks at the many ways people invest in Minnetrista! From time, to trust, to creativity, and beyond, there are so many ways that our community invests in Minnetrista. And in return, we work diligently to ensure that we can return something that has value. In this way, we seek to multiply all the good that comes to us.

As a member of the Minnetrista family, we hope that you feel immense pride and delight in the knowledge that your generosity has made these stories and accomplishments possible. Without you, we would not be able to offer the engaging exhibits, immersive experiences, and informal learning opportunities that are such a crucial aspect of life in East Central Indiana.

We pride ourselves on offering inspiring settings that encourage shared experiences and improve the quality of life for all who visit.

permanent exhibits that celebrate the history of our site: Oakhurst Experience and Bob Ross Experience.

There is no shortage of beauty and excitement to take in on Minnetrista’s forty-acre campus. Visitors can explore wooded pathways, delight in beauty of formal gardens, and enjoy picnics and events on the expansive lawns. We also boast a portion of the scenic White River Greenway, offering a picturesque backdrop to every adventure.

Inside our buildings, visitors discover galleries that host both traveling and original exhibits covering a diverse range of topics from history and fine arts to science and more. The historic homes on the Boulevard host our two

Oakhurst Experience shares the heartwarming stories of George, Frances, and Elizabeth Ball, the family that once lived in that historic home, through the themes of literacy, family connection, and food preservation. The Bob Ross Experience celebrates the life, philosophy, and art of the iconic and beloved Bob Ross in the historic house in which many seasons of The Joy of Painting were filmed. Since our opening in 1988, Minnetrista has served as a cultural pillar for the East Central Indiana region. Today, visitors count on the organization for informal learning opportunities, immersive exhibitions, engaging programmatic offerings, and so much more.

faeries, sprites, & lights gets sensory friendly

As a tribute to Elisabeth “Betty” Ball and her unshakable belief in faeries, thousands of faeries fly into Oakhurst Gardens every July for the enchanted Faeries, Sprites, & Lights (FSL) at Minnetrista. In 2022, Dana and Caleb Williams attended the inaugural sensory friendly session of FSL with their 12 year-old-daughter, Stella. They have attended as a family since Stella was four years old and find joy seeing her immersed in the creativity of it all. She loves to dress up, and Dana has fun doing her makeup!

Stella is autistic and can become overwhelmed with crowds and a lot of ambient sound, so the sensory friendly session was a great atmosphere for their family. With fewer tickets available and staff and performers receiving special training to create a more calming environment, the session was a perfect fit for Stella.

Dana shared, “[Stella] could take her time looking at things and interacting with the volunteers. I know my other friends—moms with autistic children as well—were all

commenting about how nice it was for US, too, as parents, because we could relax and not be so on guard or worried that something might be too much for our kids. We just got to enjoy watching them have a good time. It was a very positive experience for kids and parents!”

Minnetrista welcomed 226 children and their adults across three different sessions for the inaugural sensory friendly offerings of FSL in 2022. The sensory friendly experience was made possible through the generous support of our partners at Interlock ECI.

power force multipliers: volunteer

In 2022, the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland estimated the average value of the work of a volunteer at $29.95 per hour. Last year, 116 volunteers gave 3,733 hours to the institution which is over $100,000 in workforce value! Volunteers helped at events like Enchanted Luminaria Walk and Garden Fair, and lent expertise across a variety of disciplines including collections management, horticulture, and more. But why would someone spend their valuable time working for free?

When asked why she volunteers, longtime volunteer Earlene Jeakle said, “Volunteering makes me feel good. I like giving something to others and knowing that I’m contributing. Volunteering gives me an opportunity to meet other volunteers, people I would never have known. The women who help with the Christmas decorating are a wonderful group of women… We’ve become good friends and try to do lunch every month.”

Over the last few years, Master Gardener Julie Mason has started volunteering at Minnetrista with the Horticulture Department. “Minnetrista affords me so many opportunities to give back to my community like someone did for me when I was a little girl living in the Munsyana Homes in the 1950s. I also love working with and in the earth and watching the plants multiply and bring joy with the Horticulture Department. Finally, Minnetrista truly respects and appreciates its volunteers.”

9

An individual with a passion for service is not the only way volunteers find their way to Minnetrista. We frequently host volunteer groups from other organizations. Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) member Andrew Heffner talked about why his organization has volunteered with Minnetrista since 2011. “Fiji loves to do service at Minnetrista! When I was the service chair it was the first event that I led for Fiji, and I was worried that I wouldn't know what was going on. The workers at Minnetrista helped us and gave us instructions that made it a lot easier. What keeps bringing us back every year is the community at Minnetrista. The employees, the campus, and the events that we help for are a great time.”

Much of the good work happening at Minnetrista is due to our volunteers. They give their time so our visitors and community can enjoy world-class museum and garden experiences right in their own backyard!

The stunning decor on display during the winter holidays at Minnetrista is accomplished by a group affectionately known as the ‘designing women.’ These creative ladies have volunteered a combined 168 years with Minnetrista, racking up 8,199 hours as of 2022!

juried art show: broadening the scope

One of Minnetrista’s oldest exhibition traditions, our Annual Juried Art Show, has celebrated the talents of East Central Indiana artists for 33 years. Every year, a new juror brings their unique perspective to this show. In 2022, professional “fabric collage” artist Joel Fremion brought his deep appreciation for fine craftsmanship to the exhibit, selecting a wide variety of threedimensional artwork, including glass and papier mâche sculpture, ceramic vessels, textile art, jewelry, and metalwork pieces. In him, many of our selected artists found validation and encouragement to continue in their craft, rewards perhaps even more valuable than any cash prize.

Take for example Judy Kreiger, a self-taught Muncie artist who has recently been making a name for herself in Minnetrista’s Juried Art Shows with her mixed media creations. In a recent conversation with Minnetrista exhibit staff, Judy noted that she has pushed herself

to learn new art techniques when creating pieces for our shows, including woodworking, laser engraving, and stone setting. She described her recent work as experimental and has been humbled and flattered to be included in the Annual for the last several years.

For Minnetrista’s artists—avocational and professional—entering their artwork in a juried art show can be a nerve-wracking process. With each new show however, Minnetrista strives to reach new artists and provide them with a platform to grow in their craft and connect with a supportive community of artists and art admirers. In return, our community is treated to a wholly original and inspiring show each year. It is a beautiful and mutually rewarding process!

creativityimagine in glass to life brings

Every other year, Minnetrista hosts Imagine in Glass, a collaborative exhibit created in partnership with the Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass at Ball State University. The exhibit invites children from the community to submit drawings, some of which are selected to be reproduced as three-dimensional glass sculptures.

From start to finish the Imagine in Glass experience immerses kids in the exhibit’s creative process. Children submit drawings in the hopes of their pieces being chosen for the project. Leo Gestwicki (age 13), one of the selected artists, said, “I like doing art, and I figured nothing bad could come of making art and possibly having it made into a new medium.”

After the artists from Glick choose the pictures, each kid spends a day at the Glick Center where they watch their pieces being made into sculptures. Some of the kids also help in the creation of their pieces. Peter Gestwicki (age

10), Leo’s brother and fellow exhibit participant, said, “I thought it was really interesting. I thought it was neat how they drew most of the picture on and, separately, put on the wires of glass to make lines. I thought it was neat that the glass melted with a tea light…”

Once the pieces are completed, they arrive at Minnetrista for exhibition. When asked about what it felt like to be part of a museum exhibit Leo said, “It felt great! I was glad that I got to share my artwork with so many people. I rarely get to put my art where more than a few people will go, and I hope it inspired other people to make their own art!”

Leo and Peter’s father, Paul Gestwicki added, “It was a delight to come to the exhibit with my family. I think it was good for the boys to feel some pride in their work while also seeing how many other creative ideas were contributed by the community.”

Betty Brewer retires

At the end of 2022, Minnetrista said farewell to our long-serving President & CEO, Betty Brewer. Betty arrived at Minnetrista in 2005 and quickly got to work leading the institution forward on several exciting projects. Under her watch, Minnetrista implemented its first formal strategic planning process, which has been going strong for well over a decade. Additionally, it was during Betty’s tenure that Theatre Preserves was initiated, with the first performances greeting audiences in 2009.

In recent years, Betty led the reactivation of Minnetrista’s underutilized south campus area. In 2019, Betty and a team of exhibit collaborators celebrated the grand re-opening of the Oakhurst Experience which introduced the renovated historic home and associated exhibit. The opening of the Bob Ross Experience in 2020 attracted a broader audience and boosted visitation to our site.

Throughout Betty’s career, she was active as a subject matter expert, presenting at numerous state, regional, and national museum association conferences. Betty was a long-serving member of the Leadership & Management Professional Network Board of the American Alliance of Museums, including time in executive roles with that group. She was also a Museum Assessment Program peer reviewer; work she plans to continue in her retirement.

15

In addition to the leadership she provided to Minnetrista and the museum field, during her career Betty was a frequent participant in East Central Indiana community endeavors. She lent her expertise to organizations like the Council on the Environment at Ball State University and the Center for Historic Preservation. Betty served on the Muncie Arts and Culture Council’s Board for a decade, including a term as chairperson. Additionally, she was on the original steering committee for Muncie Action Plan (MAP) and served three terms on the MAP Board.

On December 15, 2022, community members gathered at Minnetrista to celebrate Betty and her career accomplishments. Heartfelt words were shared by Ball Brothers Foundation CEO, Jud Fisher, and George and Frances Ball Foundation CEO, Thomas Kinghorn. Minnetrista is grateful for Betty's leadership and wishes her well in her future endeavors.

NET OPERATING SURPLUS (DEFICIT)

In 2022, Minnetrista saw great gains in many revenue lines over our 2021 numbers. We also incurred increased costs, largely due to inflation, in areas like utilities, insurance, and supplies. Additionally, Minnetrista sustained the unexpected cost of our CEO transition. Our final 2022 accounting shows an operating deficit, which we covered by a Board-approved release from of funds from our operating reserves.

In recent years, Minnetrista Museum & Gardens has evaluated our yearly participation, not only to gauge our impact in the community but also to determine our rates of recovery from the significant impacts of COVID-19. Looking at our pre-COVID numbers in 2019 to our most recent participation in 2022 shows some encouraging trends. In the years since the pandemic began, Minnetrista has made a concerted effort to increase and improve programmatic offerings and to ensure our calendars and galleries are full of engaging exhibit content. The top three lines above show some of the fruit of these efforts, with growth in attendance and registration numbers. The addition of the Bob Ross Experience and oil painting workshops had a significant roll in increasing both exhibitions and program attendance over the past few years.

The two areas that have been slower to recover are Farmers Market and Volunteer hours. While it is difficult to know exactly why it is encouraging to note that both of these categories are higher than they were in 2020 and 2021.
