GENERALS Manuel Yan and Ed Ermita, Senator Orly Mercado and Tawi Tawi Governor Nur Jaafar stared at the name tags on my and Fred Clemente’s chests: “MNLF Observer.”Thefour were panelists and advisers of the Philippine government’s peace negotiations in Jakarta, August 1996. Clemente was Education undersecre tary, and I was publisher of “Isyu,” an all-opinion daily. So why were we on the side of the separatist Moro National Liberation Front, they must have wondered. Days earlier in Manila, President Fidel V. Ramos had called Clemente and me to Malacañang. He wished to conclude peace talks with MNLF Chairman Nur Misuari and asked us to convince him to return from walkout of heated sessions. Why us, Clemente queried. Ramos, former Armed Forces deputy for intel ligence (J2) with elephant’s memory, said he knew Clemente and Misuari to be close friends. They had been dormitory bunkmates and charter members of the radical Kabata ang Makabayan in UP Diliman in 1964. As for me, the president offered scoops of happenings behind the scenes. “Tell Misuari I have only one message for him: You are a Filipino with every right to come home.” When we whispered that to Misuari in Jakarta, he smiled and nodded. In turn he told MNLF panelist, Protestant Reverend Absalum Cerveza, to thresh out with the other side’s Gen. Alex Aguirre the contentious issues over which they had just wrangled. Misuari understood the message. FVR sincerely wanted everyone to re turn to their families. Three days later, August 19, the two met in Malabang, Lanao, the first time in tenAfteryears.awarm embrace, they jointly declared the war over. Formalities were signed in Manila on September 2. Foreign and local investments poured in to Mindanao thereafter. UNES CO awarded the two men the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Peace Prize. As a soldier, FVR was a peacemaker. More than that, he was an inspirer. Believing in the Filipino, he capped all meetings and speeches with the exhorta tion, “Kaya natin ito!” He had helped bring down his second cousin’s dictatorship and was determined to make democratic restoration work. He repulsed eight coups d’état against President Cory Aquino, 19861992, and nipped six others before armedFVRoutbreak.builtconsensus including win ning over critics. Regularly he convened the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council to iron out details on major congressional bills and forestall any need for presidential veto. One of those was the repeal of the Anti-Subversion Law that criminalized mere espousing of communism even the nonviolent type.

HI there! After more than two years, the Xavi er University-Ateneo de Cagayan Highschool Alumni Basketball League is finally back. The XU-ABL aimed to unite all XUHS alum ni through the sport many Xavier Ateneans (especially those from the defunct boy school program) loved to play –However, basketball!since I am not a graduate of XUHS, I envy watching them play basket ball.Nonetheless, I support my friends because despite the fact I only have spent my first year at XUHS. One of my regrets was not graduating from XUHS. Because of my youthful exuberance, I could not pri oritize my academics and was asked to transfer after my first year. However, since many of my friends from XUHS were my batchmates in Xavier University Grade School, I have not lost and still have contact with them. But watching in envy, I saw my friends treating their batchmates as BROTHERS. Then it made me ponder to realize where the brother hood started. In 1926, a letter writ ten by Fr. James G. Daly, S.J., initially mentioned the idea of a possible Ateneo in Cagayan, Misamis, since there was no Jesuit school then. However, in 1927 when the American Jesuits finally established in Cagayan, Mis amis, they started a primary school while purchasing another building near the St. Augustine Church for an intermediateAdditionally, school.they rented a house for a Catholic boys’ dormitory that catered to almost a hundred dormers and named it “St. Augustine Dormitory.”Whilethe Beatas de la Compania de Jesus (now known as the Religious of the Virgin Mary or RVM) converted their convent into a Catholic dormitory for girls, naming it “Sta. Teresita Dormitory.” All because Fr. James T.G. Hayes saw the need for a Catholic school for boys and a Catholic Academy for girls. However, after Fr. Hayes was appointed Bishop of Cagayan in 1933, he in structed Fr. Joseph L. Lucas SJ to Open the Ateneo de Cagayan for boys. Together with Lourdes Academy (school for girls), it was opened during the same month that Bishop Hayes was consecrated to the episcopacy in New York in June 1933. However, the Ateneo de Cagayan was a diocesan school at first under the bishop's care, with Fr. Joseph Lucas, S.J., Fr. Vincent L. Kenally, S.J, and Kirchgess ner SJ as acting directors from 1933 - 1937. “HAVE you already shed your blood in the strug gle against sin?” This is truly a paradoxical question concerning Chris tian living, for the Apostle is implying for us that a noteworthy receiving of life, comes with a willful giving of life.Holiness is much less a state for our spirits to simply hope for, than a pro-active and dutiful response to offer oneself in oblation for the building of God’s kingdom, “So, let us be rid of every encumbrance, and especially of sin, to persevere in run ning the race marked out beforeHolinessus.” is essentially bearing witness to the ex emplar of the Christ who preceded us all, “For the sake of the joy reserved for him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and then, sat at the right of the throne of God.Think of Jesus, who suf fered so many contradictions from evil people, and you will not be discouraged or growSo,weary.”sanctity is both a vi sion of the Spirit for us, and a mission of the Spirit with us; it is the ultimate end which cannot be accomplished without its praxis. But it is the Spirit who leads us to himself; it is the Spirit who prods us to this divine direction. We have to be prepared to live a life wherever the Spirit prompts us, even if that life may turn out to be “unpleasant.”Holinessis the consum mation which may either be realized through the precar ity of Jeremiah’s fate in the muddy cistern of Malchiah; or through the inevitability of Jesus’ fate on the humili ating cross of Calvary. Our Lord reminds us that he himself must struggle against this “unpleasant” life, that we ourselves must endure and fight against “nonviolent” systems and structures of injustice and oppression, if only to bring about authentic social justice and peace: “I have come to bring fire upon the earth, and how I wish it were al ready kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and what anguish I feel until it is finished! Do you think that I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on, in one house five will be divided: three against two, and two against three.” For us to live a holy life, we must first confront the irony that we cannot “plan how to live it.” We cannot live it as we wish nor in ways we can choose. We cannot set our own “holiness agenda” in the same way that we would have a “fitness plan” or a set of “life goals” or the deter mination to follow a “career road-map.”AsChristians, we are constantly challenged by the faith we profess, and to live lives modeled primarily on the life of the Christ.

MARY Che de Jesus Vitor, 23, of Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City finds inspiration to excel in her studies from her family and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program. (4Ps) Graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines-Cebu with the degree of Bachelor of Arts of Political Science for the School Year 2021-2022, Mary Che shares her story on how the Department of Social Welfare and Devel opment (DSWD) through 4Ps made her dream big and achieved it. She second child of the seven Vitor siblings, May Che, disclosed that her fam ily had difficulty addressing their needs before DSWD put them under the conditional cash transfer program of the national government. “Before becoming a 4Ps beneficiary, my family had difficulty addressing the ne cessities each family member needed for survival and the essentials of three students required at school. “It was a challenging situ ation since my mother had to budget the 365-day salary of my father as a security guard back then with seven people with different needs. “Another thing that added to the financial burden my mother and father had to carry was the medication for my older sister, who has cerebral palsy. My Ate has to maintain her medication for her to live longer. It was heart-wrenching to watch that my mother had to beg so that others would lend her money to make ends meet for the family,” said Mary Che. At a time, Mary Che’s parents would quarrel be cause her mother could hard ly budget the small amount of money left from his father’s monthly salary. “This borrowing system continued, which worsened our situation, leading to many sacrifices within the family. Instead, my father’s mea ger salary would be for our food; my mother had to use a part of it to pay the debts. The debts were the reason my father and mother of ten quarreled, which as a daughter, was a hard thing to witness. While listening to their arguments, you cannot help but question if there is a brighter future ahead of us; a future where everyone in the family has the chance to experience waking up in the morning without thinking about financial constraints,” Mary Che said. 4Ps: a breath from fi nancial strangulation Mary Che is among the first batch of 4Ps beneficia ries who graduated under the K-12 curriculum of the Department of Education in 2018. Since her basic education curriculum studies in Kaus wagan Elementary School and Cagayan de Oro City National High School, she has been a consistent honor student; Mary Che considers 4Ps a breath from financial strangulation. “After becoming a benefi ciary of the 4Ps program, my family was able to breathe from the financial strangula tion. My parents can now afford to buy food, which is enough to feed seven mouths three times a day, the neces sary goods at school, and the medicine my older sister needs,” said Mary Che. Mary Che’s eldest sister, Mary Love, has cerebral palsy.“My siblings no longer fight over a small amount of food at the table every meal, and we no longer experience envy at school when other students have the require ments while we don’t. “Also, my mother no longer runs and begs lend ers to support the family. The program also enabled my mother to do business, significantly impacting the family. My mother had also used the money we had re ceived to fund my mother’s small business in which she cooked and sold viand to an establishment.“Asidefrom the fact that we would no longer think of our viand every meal, it was also an additional income for the family. My family’s situation after being placed under the program made me dream bigger and inspired me to do well at school,” said Mary Che. DSWD is a blessing “DSWD has provided me with the necessary means to excel in academics. Through the program, they have given me the chance to appreciate education’s value and contin ue despite the hindrances that would come along the way. “Through 4Ps, DSWD extended their hands to as sist me in seeing the value of education to those trapped by the teeth of thattoatessentialmymytheyaid“Throughpoverty.thefinancialtheyhavegivenme,havenurturednotjustphysicalstatebutalsomentalstate,whichisinperformingwellschool.“DSWDhasinspiredmepushfurtherandrealizemycurrentstruggling state will not define my fu ture.
