Health officials in the Soccsksargen region has recorded 19 individuals who were infected with new COVID-19 variants.
Dr. Aristides Concepcion Tan, DOHCenter for Health Development (CHD-12) told members of the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force on COVID-19, that 10 of the 19 patients had the United Kingdom variant (B.1.1.7). Of the 10, five were from Gen. Santos City, three in North Cotabato and two in South Cotabato. The task force also recorded four patients with South African variant (B.1.1.351) of which three were from North Cotabato and one in Sultan Kudarat.
Two patient have the virus identified as “variant of concern/mutation with potential clinical significance.” South Cotabato has one Brazil variant and an unknown variant. Gen. Santos City has one patient with COVID-19 Indian variant. Tan said to date no clinical observations that would suggest these new variants are more lethal that the original variant. He reiterated the calls of DOH for the public to observe health protocols at all times.
