OMIs BURY FR. JUN ON HIS NATAL DAY By Edwin O. Fernandez

THE Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) in the Philippines will bury today one of the seniors and influential members of the congregation, Fr. Eliseo Dela Rosa Mercado Jr, who died of cardiac arrest after surviving COVID-19. Fr. Jun, as he is more known, was to celebrate his 73rd birthday today. He was born on 1948 in Obando, Bulacan. This year, he was set to celebrate 54th anniversary as OMI priest. Fr. Jun was the third priest in the Archdiocese of Cotabato who died in a span of three days. Fr. Jun joined his Creator on Christian High Holy Day of Pentecost, the 50th day from Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles. He was tested positive to SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19, but have

survived and was ready to go home when he suffered cardiac arrest at past 3 p.m. He was actually transferred to a private room awaiting for discharge. Fr. Jun has undergone heart bypass operation many years ago. He has a pacemaker in body. The OMI said Fr. Jun experienced COVID-19 symptoms at his residence at the OMI Novitiate in Tamontaka, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao and was admitted to the Cotabato Regional Medical Center (CRMC) on May 8. THE Archdiocese of Cotabato will send to their final resting place Fr. Loreto Sanoy and Fr. Rex “Bong” Bacero on Tuesday morning, June 1. Both diocesan clergy members succumbed to novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The ashes of Fr. Loreto “Loret” Sanoy and Fr.
