DID YOU KNOW? Today is Labor Day and Feast of St. Joseph, the Worker. Labor Day was first observed in the Philippines on May 1, 1903 when a hundred thousand workers marched through Malacañang, demanding fairer working conditions from the then American-led government. On April 8th 1908, the Philippine Assembly passed a bill officially recognizing the first of May as a national holiday. St. Joseph has two feast days on the liturgical calendar. The first is March 19— Joseph, the Husband of Mary. The second is May 1—Joseph, the Worker. He was he chaste husband of Mary, the foster father of Jesus, and a carpenter. Joseph is the patron of many things, including the universal Church, fathers, the dying and social justice.

Melons sold cheaply in Region 12 By John Felix Unson

DUE to oversupply, watermelons and cantaloupes are being sold at only P20 a kilo in roadside stalls in Central Mindanao’s adjoining South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat provinces. Due to the low prices of palay and corn grains, many farmers in both provinces have shifted to propagation of watermelon and cantaloupe, resulting in overproduction and dip in selling prices. In random interviews Monday, Vendors told Mindanao Cross they are profiting considerably since even low income people can afford the watermelons and cantaloupes they peddle along the highways. The extensive growing by farmers in both provinces have resulted in big watermelon and cantaloupe harvest surpluses, now peddled at only P20 by vendors operating stalls along the General Santos-Cotabato highway.

During high tide, the ground is about two feet below the sea level. At low tide, the island emerges a little higher. Tabawan is at the center of South Ubian municipality which is the easternmost area of the province. The municipality also includes the islands of Bubuan, Bintaulan, and South Ubian. Fr.
