THE NEW GOLD: WATER HYACINTH

PRODUCTION of handicraft from water lilies in Cotabato City and its environs are expected to improve revenues for local entrepreneurs after the Department of Agriculture (DA) national office provided a handicraft association with a processing center in the city.

DAYS are looking good for the local fiber makers as the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), an agency of the DA, has turned over the Water Lily Processing Center and Drying Shed to the Cotabato City local government unit. The processing center was then received by the City's beneficiary, the RGPHA. This project was the result of the agency's official visit to the city from years ago where they saw the potential of the water lilies found in the rivers.

The PhilFIDA conducted Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and Documentation of Water Lily Gathering and Processing with Rio Grande Pusaw Handicraft Association headed by President Ruth L. Mokamad. PhilFIDA Executive Director Kennedy Trinidad Costales PhilFIDA Regional Office IX OIC Director Alex Alcibar Jaducana and personnel joined the interview and ocular inspection in 2018. Lawyer Obaid Pasasem, BARMM Deputy Minister for Budget, Finance and Management, said the regional government is always open for validation of any hot copy that news organizations might come across from any party legitimately advocating for transparency in governance. Pacasem said the BARMM Ministry of Budget, Finance and Management can be reached easily via its website https:// mfbm.bangsamoro.gov.ph/ where it posts updates of information on the region’s funds status, including releases. Also posted on the same website are the office email address and contact numbers.

BIFF’s desperate terror plot seen By John Felix Unson

THERE is a ragtag group of bombers from the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters now subject of a military hunt to prevent attacks meant to disprove public perception that the group has been weakened by the surrender of more members in recent months. A soldier, Cpl. Melchor Losayao, was killed while six others were wounded when a roadside bomb hit their vehicle while motoring through a highway in Datu Hoffer Ampatuan last week. One of the injured soldiers is a son of a retired Army general. The remains of Losayao had been airlifted to his hometown, Catarman, Northern Samar. “The BIFF is desperately doing everything to create the impression that it is still a force to reckon with --- after many of its members perished in encounters with our units in the last nine months.
