PH PROMOTES ‘VATICAN-ISLAM’ HUMAN FRATERNITY DOCUMENT

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. warned that an increasing geo-political polarization was a threat to “hard-won peace in the Asia-Pacific.”

Addressing the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 21, the

Philippine President offered the Philippine experience in peace-building to the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

OPPAPRU Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr noted the need for a “sense of awareness” among the Filipinos that the Human

IAG hosts forum on advancing, protection of IP rights

THE Institute for Autonomy and Governance (IAG), in partnership with International IDEA (Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance) and European Union (EU) has hosted recently an insightful table discussion on challenges and opportunities while advancing Indigenous Peoples’ (IP) rights.

“We have a productive and insightful experience-sharing forum over the weekend in Manila where we took stock of challenges and opportunities in advancing IP rights advocacy at the community, regional (BARMM and Cordillera) and national levels,” the IAG said in statement.

“Our IP Champions are a step closer to formulating the national agenda for the protection of indigenous peoples’ rights following the regional workshops and mentoring program,” said the IAG,

headed by Atty. Benedicto R. Bacani as its executive director.

“We are proud to see our IP Champions contributing to shaping the foundation for meaningful and sustainable inclusion of the Indigenous Peoples' agenda, especially in the governance and development processes within BARMM and Cordillera,” the IAG said.

The IP Champions Project is an EU-funded program implemented by International IDEA and IAG.

In October, Ms. Jo Genna Jover, IAG's Indigenous Peoples program manager, assured members of IP communities in North and South Upi that IAG is committed to the development of public policies that will help protect and promote the rights of IPs.

Marines augment CAFGUs after Buldon attack

ONE of two militiamen wounded in an attack by local terrorists in Buldon, Maguindanao before dawn Monday died in a hospital, bringing to four the number of fatalities in the incident.

The Army's 6th Infantry Division and the 1st Marine Brigade have agreed to augment with Marines the security team in Barangay Edcor, Buldon to prevent a repeat of the atrocity, perpetrated by at least six men riding two NMAX scooters and a Bajaj Kawasaki 125 CC motorcycle.

Officials of the Maguindanao Provincial Police Office and relatives of Arnel Cayanan, a member of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit, told reporters Tuesday morning that he succumbed to bullet wounds late Monday while in a hospital.

Three of Cayanan’s companions, the CAFGU members Christian Silvestre, Ignacio Lozada and Dondon Ahito, were killed on the spot when gunmen on motorcycles attacked their makeshift outpost in Barangay Edcor in the hinterland Buldon town in Maguindanao del Norte.

A fifth CAFGU member, the wounded Carlbertson Baggay, is undergoing medication.

They were guarding a bridge in Barangay Edcor in Buldon, damaged by Tropical Storm Paeng in late

October, set for repair by engineers. Their attackers, who fled towards an interior area in Buldon, are now subject of a joint police and military manhunt.

Col. Eric Macaambac, commander of the 1st Marine Brigade said Tuesday they are to provide additional Marines to guard the bridge that the slain CAFGUs guarded.

"We are not taking chances and we shall never allow that incident to happen again," Macaambac said. JMU

Gen. Galido condemns attack vs. CAFGUs securing Buldon bridge

THE Army’s 6th Infantry Division has condemned the attack against a temporary outpost of Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit in Buldon town that left four dead and one injured.

Major Gen. Roy Galido, 6th ID commander, said the soldiers were part of the security of the bridge undergoing rehabilitation in the village of Edcor.

Heavy trucks and heavy equipment are prevented from passing through the bridge in Sitio Simway, Barnagay Edcor after Typhoon Paeng in October weakened its foundation.

The attack occurred at about 1 a.m. Monday.

“This inhumane act of the killing and wounding of our personnel must be condemned to the full extent,” Maj. Gen. Galido, also commander of Joint Task Force Central (JTFC), said.

“JTF Central calls on the populace to remain vigilant of the atrocities of these culprits behind the attack on our personnel hence, this shooting incident deliberately violates the right to life and cannot be

justified under any ideology or circumstance,” he added.

Colonel Eric A Macaambac, commander ng 1st Marine Brigade based in Buldon, said the militiamen has been implementing a local order not to allow cargo trucks from passing through the bridge while rehabilitation is ongoing.

Three militiamen died on the spot while the fourth expired while undergoing medication in a hospital.

“We will ensure that justice for the victims will be served,” Maj. Gen. Galido said.

Four M-14 rifles were taken by the attackers, the Army said.

Police and military authorities believed the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters were behind the attack.

Buldon Mayor Pahmia Manalao-Masurong also condemned the attack.

She extended financial aid to the families of slain militiamen. EOF

Farmers get innovative knowledge from DAR’s FBS

OFFICIALS of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in North Cotabato province on Wednesday lauded 31 Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) in Tulunan town for completing the Farmer Business School (FBS) program that will empower them to be productive entrepreneurs.

Charish Paña, DAR North Cotabato agrarian reform program officer, congratulated the FBS finishers for completing the 25 sessions that started in July this year.

"We hope that we have inspired the farmers, especially the ARBs, to put their learning into practice and pursue entrepreneurship for more income generation for their respective families," Paña said in a statement.

Two BARMM MPs

The FBS graduates were members of the New Caridad United Farmers Association in Tulunan who finished the course on Tuesday.

Paña said the FBS 25 sessions have provided the learners with sufficient knowledge and skills in establishing and managing farm enterprises.

Meanwhile, DAR - North Cotabato Enterprise Development and Economic Support (EDES) section chief, Virginia Obrero, commended the graduates for their enthusiasm to complete the program.

In her speech during the graduation ceremony, Obrero challenged the graduates and their organization to upscale the services of their association and to turn their group into a cooperative.

"DAR has already equipped all

together for peace in

of you with sufficient knowledge and skills of an entrepreneur. We believe that you can now upscale businesses operation by turning your association into a coop for a wider reach to boost the income generation of your organization," she said.

Roy Gullos, one of the FBS graduates, welcomed the challenge to form a coop citing that the program has enhanced their entrepreneurial knowledge of farm production, business planning, proper recording, market networking, and decisionmaking.

“The program has helped us change our perspective on farming and look at it as an opportunity for business,” he said.

The FBS sessions were facilitated by DAR-trained technical experts. EOF

SulKud Army-Reds clash leaves 6 NPAs dead

GOVERNMENT forces clashed at the break of dawn Thursday with communist rebels in a remote village in Sultan Kudarat that left six rebels dead, the Army said.

Lt. Colonel Frederick Chicote, commander of the Army’s 7th Infantry Battalion, said the encounter occurred at 5:30 a.m. in Sitio Mudti, Barangay Chua, Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat.

Colonel Michael Santos, commander of 603rd Infantry Brigade, said 7th IB troopers were patrolling the village when they chanced upon a group of about 10 New Peoples’ Army (NPA) rebels, triggering gunfights.

The skirmishes lasted for about 30 minutes and the rebels fled deep into the forest, leaving their slain companions.

Lt. Colonel Chicote identified the slain rebels as Dennis Dolunan, NPA executive committee member and deputy secretary of East Daguma Front of SubRegional Command (SRC) Daguma, Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR); his wife Lailyn who served as medic, Sep Kasa, Jerry Kasa

alias Kikil and two unidentified fighter.

Government forces recover one AK47, three M16 Armalite rifle, ammunition, a motorbike, rebels personal items and subversive documents.

“No casualty on the government side,” Lt. Colonel Chicote said.

Major General Roy Galido, 6th Infantry Division commander, lauded the military involved in the operation but expressed sadness over the death of rebels who are fellow Filipinos but were misguided and duped to join a useless struggle.

“As much as possible, we don’t want lives to be wasted, because we don’t want to see families suffering from the loss of their family members and loved ones” Maj. Gen. Galido, also commander of Joint Task Force Central (JTFC), said.

“That is why I have been appealing to communist rebels to lay down guns, surrender and live normally with their loved ones,” he said, adding that the remnants of NPAs in Sultan Kudarat and nearby areas can voluntarily surrender.

Quiapo Church prohibits bringing of large-size religious images, standartes during Nazarene feast

Alex Irasga, a parish lay adviser, said images measuring more than two feet tall will be prohibited at the Quirino Grandstand as early as Jan. 7.

An image of the Nazareno will be displayed at the area until the feast day on Jan. 9 for the “Pagpupugay” or wherein devotees will be allowed to touch the statue.

Such policy, he said, will remain in force at the routes of the “Walk of Faith” procession and at the vicinity of Quiapo Church.

“Some devotees might think they are part of the procession and might cause disorder so we want to avoid that,” Irasga said at a press briefing in Manila.

“You can bring images that can be handled by one person. We will not prevent that. But for those more than two feet, which cannot be carried by a single person, that we will not allow anymore,” he said.

He also asked groups of devotees looking to bring standartes and carriages for the event to forego such plans.

“We are appealing to them not to bring along their banners and the like to the procession,” Irasga added.

Irasga said such a policy will be strictly implemented in coordination with the police authorities.

“There will be checkpoints around the Quirino Grandstand and Quiapo areas. All who shall attempt to bring these images will be disallowed,” Irasga said.

Quiapo Church authorities earlier announced the traditional procession of the Black Nazarene image or “Traslacion” remains suspended next year amid the threat of Covid-19 pandemic.

They instead introduced the “Walk of Faith” from the Quirino

ROME— Pope Francis has appointed a Spanish layman to lead the Secretariat for the Economy following the resignation of Father Juan Antonio Guerrero, SJ, “for personal reasons.”

Maximino Caballero Ledo, 62, has been secretary general, the second-ranking position, in the economy office since August 2020.

Before coming to the Vatican, Caballero was vice president of international finance at Baxter Healthcare, Inc., a medical products company. From Merida, Spain, he lived and worked in the United States from 2007-2020.

Guerrero is also

from Merida, Spain, and a childhood friend of Caballero. The 63-year-old Jesuit priest began his term as prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy in January 2020.

The Vatican said Nov. 30 that Pope Francis had accepted Guerrero’s resignation “for personal reasons.” The resignation takes effect Dec. 1.

The pope “warmly thanks Father Guerrero for the dedication shown in his service to the Holy See,” the statement said.

“Father Guerrero managed to sort out the economy for the better, it was a strong and challenging work that

bore much fruit. The Holy Father assures him of His prayers.”

Guerrero and Caballero were childhood friends who grew up in the same city in Spain. Caballero told Vatican News after his appointment in August 2020 that the two were close friends through university and had remained in contact.

Caballero has degrees in economics and business administration, and has worked for businesses in Spain and the United States in positions of international finance.

He has been married for 33 years to Immaculada, and they have two adult children.

When appointed to work in the Vatican’s economy office in 2020, Caballero described it as “God’s call,” saying that for he and his wife, “there was only one response: ‘fiat.'”

Pope Francis established the Secretariat for Economy in 2014 as part of his financial reform of the Vatican. It oversees the financial aspects of both the Roman Curia and the Vatican City State

administration, including a review of financial reports.

Guerrero, who has been a Jesuit since 1979, has a degree in economics from the Autonomous University of Madrid and degrees in theology, philosophy, and letters.

Before becoming prefect, the priest had been living in Rome since 2017, serving as general counselor and delegate of the superior general for the interprovincial houses and works of the Jesuits.

Guerrero had filled a position left vacant since February 2019, when the Vatican confirmed Cardinal George Pell’s five-year term as prefect to have expired.

Pell had taken a leave of absence beginning in June 2017, when he returned to his country of Australia to defend himself at trial against charges of historic sex abuse.

The cardinal was initially convicted and imprisoned, but later had his conviction overturned on appeal. He was released and moved back to Rome, where he lives in retirement.

ROME — Pope Francis has recommended a daily examination of conscience as an “indispensable” practice in spiritual life.

An examination of conscience is a prayerful reflection on one’s thoughts, words, and deeds that helps to identify moments of sin and ask for God’s mercy.

This daily examination can be “an invitation to learn from our experiences” and “not to continue to repeat the same mistakes,” the pope said.

Speaking at his general audience on Nov. 30, Pope Francis said that the devil’s temptation “starts from what is most dear to us and then, little by little, reels us in.”

He said: “This is why a daily examination of conscience is so important. Before finishing the day, stop for a while. What happened? Not in the newspapers, not in life — what happened in my heart?”

“Noticing what happens is important, it is a sign that God’s grace is working in us, helping us to grow in freedom and awareness. … Learn to read in the book of your heart what happened during the day.”

Pope Francis’ advice was part of his tenth catechesis in a weekly series on spiritual discernment, which he began at the end of August.

The pope noted that prayer during the day should not be viewed as a way to avoid a job or task that needs to be done, as in “every time I have to wash the dishes or clean the house, I have a strong urge to pray!”

“Prayer is not an escape from one’s responsibilities,” he said. “On the contrary, it is an aid in realizing the good we are required to do, here and now.”

In celebration of the feast of St. Andrew, the pope announced that a delegation of the Holy See had traveled to Constantinople.

“I wish to express my special affection to my dear brother Patriarch Bartholomew I and the entire Church of Constantinople,” Francis said.

“May the intercession of the Holy Brother

This Sunday, a seemingly eccentric personality is introduced to us. He was the “ voice crying out from the wilderness.” He himself looked like a wild man clothed in a leather garment and a cloak of camel’s hair. His food was locusts and honey . Out of the wild desert this figure appeared by the banks of the river Jordan, calling people to repentance and baptizing them. He acknowledged that he was only preparing the way for someone greater than he, the strings of whose sandals he was not fit to untie. He was John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus.

Daily Scripture Readings

The desert was also called the wilderness. It was an inhospitable place, populated by wild animals. In Jewish imagination at that time, the desert was also the domain of the evil spirits. People did not usually venture into the desert, except to escape normal living. In fact, there was a Jewish sect during the time of Jesus who fled into the desert and formed a disciplined community. They had a regular ritual of bathing in the cisterns that collected run-off water from the mountains. They also engaged themselves in the study of the scriptures. They believed that when the Messiah comes they would form the vanguard of the Messiah’s forces. I visited their abandoned monastery near the Qumran and I was amazed at the irrigation canals and cisterns they have built and their writings preserved on parchment. It seemed John the Baptist was part of this community called the Essenes.

John the Baptist’s ministry was to prepare the way for the Messiah. They knew each other from the time they were both in the wombs of their mothers Mary and Elizabeth. They were cousins. In preparing the way of the Messiah, John called for repentance, a complete turn around from sinful ways. Repentance is not just a sense of remorse or contrition. True repentance is a resolve to

There is a wilderness, and a wildness in each of us. The psycho-analyst Carl Jung calls it the “shadow” part of us. Perhaps you have known people who were gentle, patient, and calm, and then something triggers bursts of anger from them and they become wild. |The traditional spiritual writers speak of the seven cardinal sins or deadly vices. They are: anger, pride, envy, greed, gluttony, lust, and laziness. From these principal (cardinal) sins proceed other sins. The Fathers of the Desert who battled against them and wrote of their struggles advised their disciples to identify which of these were their weakness and pray and fast to conquer them. They are just inside us but the more we are aware of such shadows then we can better manage ourselves. I once was with a very gentle bishop tagging along with him in Rome and we went to a souvenir store. He was buying “pasalubong” for his staff but the school owner started making insulting remarks about Filipinos in general. He left the store very angry, and under his breath I could hear him say repeatedly, ”This should not be allowed to pass.” He went back to the store and released a torrent of Italian at the storeowner (He was a student in Rome as a young priest.) He came out smiling . Justice was done.

Advent is a penitential season. Advent calls us to repentance but the first step of conversion is an awareness of our own sinfulness. There is a tendency in each of us to deny our own weakness. It goes against our sense of pride to say that we are in need of change. Let us therefore identify and claim our own shadows and heed the call of John the Baptist, “Repent , prepare the way of the Lord and make straight his paths.”

is an Aramaic word used in Advent “as a cry that the time will surely come when we will rejoice for the coming of the Lord”. Advent as Christians all know is the preparation for the coming, waiting and preparing for the celebration of Jesus’ birth.

Filipinos are said to have the longest Christmas season of all. When the “ber” months have arrived, and the strains of the songs of Jose Mari Chan can be heard in the airwaves, we start bringing out the decors that we stowed away from the celebration last Christmas.

How different is the 2003 Christmas season from last year? This region is saddled with the experience of celebrating Christmas in a Muslim area. It is a novel experience for many….how to reconcile the celebration with a government that aspires to establish a Muslim government in a historically Christian environment. There are some questions that arise:

1. With the security tightened due to threats in safety felt at the start of the season, will this dampen the schedule of religious activities that are usually practiced annually? The previous years already gave a peek into how extraneous events affect Christmas celebration – the COVID pandemic, the natural calamities – which impacted on the financial resources of Christians. Would the new dispensation include in its budget expenses for Christmas celebration?

2. Both Muslims and Christians are aware that values (and other subtleties) are vastly different when practiced in “real” settings. Would Muslims adopt the more traditional (or Koranic) interpretations? Other countries have opted for interpretations that are easier for its Christian population to integrate into their religious practices. Countries like Indonesia and Malaysia have come up with practices that are more convenient for both religions to adopt. However, these countries have started their studies on both quite a long time ago. The BARMM should embark on this program immediately to save on time (and possibly heartaches).

3. The City of Cotabato is at the center of this integration because of the presence of foreign (?) sources of knowledge. The mayor should be firm in his commitment that he is administering a government whose population is almost balanced in terms of religious affiliation. So far, his 100 days have passed without any move on his part to touch on this sensitive aspect of governance.

Christmas is a major activity for Christians in the same sense that Ramadan is treasured by Muslims. We hope that as the region embark on these new changes that comes with our life, everyone in authority (both Christians and Muslims) will try hard to avoid the conflicts that has plagued other countries. Let us celebrate Christmas and Ramadan with the peace, security, and prosperity that we are aiming for. MC

In a recent media release, the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity or OPAPRU said it will be pushing “for the promotion, adoption and institutionalization of the Human Fraternity Document across all key sectors of society.”

The commitment was made by Presidential Peace Adviser Sec. Carlito G. Galvez, Jr. during a peace forum held at the Ateneo De Davao University last week, the OPAPRU news release said.

The Human Fraternity Document, officially the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together is also known as the Abu Dhabi declaration or Abu Dhabi agreement. It is a historic joint statement signed by Pope Francis of the Catholic Church and Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, on 4 February 2019 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The document is concerned with how different faiths can live peacefully in the same world and provides a blueprint for a culture of dialogue and collaboration between faiths. “The declaration intends to serve as a guide for future generations to advance a culture of mutual respect, in recognition that we are all members of one human family,” according to the website of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, an independent international committee instituted to promote human fraternity values in communities around the world and to fulfill the aspirations of the Document on Human Fraternity.

In the document, Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar called on world leaders “to work strenuously to spread the culture of tolerance and of living together in peace; to intervene at the earliest opportunity to stop the shedding of innocent blood and bring an end to wars, conflicts, environmental decay and the moral and cultural decline that the world is presently experiencing.”

They asked leaders and would-be influencers “to rediscover the values of peace, justice, goodness, beauty, human fraternity and coexistence in order to confirm the importance of these values as anchors of salvation for all, and to promote them everywhere.” They declared that “terrorism is deplorable and threatens the security of people,” wherever they may be, but said “this is not due to religion, even when terrorists instrumentalize it. It is due, rather, to an accumulation of incorrect interpretations of religious texts and to policies linked to hunger, poverty, injustice, oppression and pride.”

The document emphasizes the importance of upholding the values of peace, the freedom of every person, justice based on mercy, dialogue in order to promote

peace and tolerance. It also declares the need to uphold the concept of citizenship based on the equality of rights and duties, under which all enjoy justice. The document also declares that the protection of the rights of women, children, the elderly, the weak, the disabled, and the oppressed is a religious and social obligation that must be guaranteed and defended through strict legislation and the implementation of the relevant international agreements.

In making the OPAPRU’s commitment to promote the Document among the agency’s various international partners as well as with government institutions, Sec. Galvez said the OPAPRU will also push for the institutionalization of the document in the government’s national peace agenda. “Our objective is to promote the culture of peace, enhance community resilience for peace, and provide a proactive approach to counter various forms of recruitment and mobilization by violent extremist groups, especially among vulnerable communities and individuals,” he said.

Government security units under the DND and the DILG such as the AFP and the PNP have been identified as the primary source of red-tagging of human rights advocates including those that advocate the land rights of the country’s numerous indigenous communities. Government functionaries connected to the anti-terrorism council and the NTF-ELCAC have been the target of several complaints of red-tagging, a practice which has proven to be not only dangerous but deadly for those subjected to it. The Anti-Terror Law continues to be a concern for many peace and human rights advocates, including several Church institutions, as it continues to threaten the right of free expression, freedom of speech, and several other rights and freedoms. How can all these be reconciled with the values upheld by the Document on Human Fraternity? Will the government as a whole and the agencies concerned be willing to tread a different path to peace?

PRESIDENTIAL

Peace Process Adviser Secretary Carlito Galvez enunciates the Philippine position and role of civil society organizations and local institutions in popularizing the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together.

The Human Fraternity Document (HFD) started with the historic journey of Pope Francis to the United Arab Emirates (February 3-5) 2019. The Pope had the opportunity to meet with interreligious leaders, particularly Muslims.

Pope Francis attended the memorials of one of the founders of the interreligious dialogue and co-signed the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad Al-Tayyeb on February 4, 2019.

They have since invited “all persons who have faith in God and faith in human fraternity to unite and work together so that it may serve as a guide for future generations to advance a culture of mutual respect in the awareness of the great divine grace that makes all human beings brothers and sisters.” (The U.S, Conference of Catholic Bishops)

Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago warmly welcomed the document, as well as by the U.S. Catholic Chair of the National Catholic-Muslim Dialogue, and by Most Rev. Joseph C. Bambera, Bishop of Scranton and Chair of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs:

The Catholic Chair of National Catholic-Muslim Dialogue and the Chairman of U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs have issued a Joint Statement on this development

Inspired by the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, the Higher Committee on Human Fraternity was formed. They continue to work to implement the ideals found in the document among all people of good will, including further documents from events and reflections, according to the statement of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

On December 21, 2020, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly unanimously declared every Fourth of February as the International Day of Human Fraternity. February 4, 2021 marked the first celebration. Pope

Francis took part in a virtual celebration of the event with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, Secretary General António Guterres of the United Nations, and more. It was hosted by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi, capital of UAE. Vatican News announced the event and provided a comprehensive media coverage, and kit that traces Pope Francis’ involvement in the formation of the Humanitarian Fraternity Document (HFD).

The Philippines through the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) embraces the essence and timely relevance of the document in a diverse Filipino society.

OPAPPRU leads the country’s move to adopt, promote and institutionalize the HFD, signed in 2019 by Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayyeb of the AlAzhar University.

It can also be recalled that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. warned that an increasing geopolitical polarization was a threat to “hard-won peace in the Asia-Pacific.” Addressing the 77th Session of United Nations General Assembly on September 21, the Philippine President offered the Philippine experience in peace-building to the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

Secretary Galvez notes the need for a broader “sense of awareness” among the Filipinos that “first” the Human Fraternity Document (HFD) exists.

Galvez expressed this during a peace forum held at the Ateneo De Davao University in Davao City. The forum was the first Philippine platform in which the HFD was revisited and adopted in the context of Filipino diversity with the theme, #BrotherandSisters: Human Fraternity as a Guide in Living in Peace and Establishing Peaceful Communities.

ATall times, the value of human rights is to respect life as a Godgiven treasure irrespective of persons, their right to live and co-exist with one another under the biblical concept of oneness because Adam’s wife Eve was the mother of all the living (Genesis 3:20). But despite it all, we self-destruct.

Even within the family or among clan members we resort to annihilate each other because of pride, envy and greed for power and worldly possessions. Almost daily, we hear and watch global news about murder and massacre in bomb blast or sporadic gunfire. What’s happening to us?

Biblically speaking, God commanded man to have a woman as his wife that the two will become one. And went on to say: What God has joined together, let no man put asunder (Matthew 19:6). A timely reminder to a shooting incident this week that killed the third wife of a man by his second wife in Lanao del Sur.

Upholding human rights is good. For God Himself has gifted us with “freewill” to choose between good and evil with corresponding merits and consequences as in blessing or curse. Thus, salvation from total damnation is to each his own from a God who cannot be bribed. That Christ, the appointed Savior of the human race, said, “It’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven” (Matthew 19:24).

Kudos to the direct participation of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division and its Joint Task Force Central under Maj. Gen. Roy Galido to a two-week campaign to end violence against women. The military initiative is in accordance with Presidential Proclamation 1172 issued in 2006 by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. As the second head of state from the distaff side, Arroyo’s

decree was meant to instill PH awareness on the rights of women by upholding existing laws for their protection.

Amid vigilance of men in uniform, three members of the civilian auxiliary force in Buldon, Maguindanao were killed by armed men while the victims were securing Simuay bridge. While authorities are still in the investigation process, an SUV vehicle was ambushed this week in Sharif Aguak town of Maguindanao that injured its driver, Alex Manuel while his companion Rajah Buayan MPDC Ramil Masukat escaped unhurt. Masukat used to be chief security officer of the late Simeon Datumanong who held several lucrative posts in government from being Maguindanao governor, RAG-12 and LTP chair, DPWH and Justice secretary under different PH heads of state.

The Datumanong stewardship manifested a balancing act on equal rights and protection which was envisioned to be a governance of impartiality. And such political path was vastly improved by his successors despite their meager annual budget that the status quo is now enjoying with its unprecedented huge budgetary outlay.

Biblical account on men and women shows that in religious gatherings, women must keep silent in churches, for they are not allowed to speak but submissive and learn from their husband at home (1 Corinthians 14:34-35).

God’s standard is not like ours, yet we have to obey by heart when He explained, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts nor your ways My ways” (Isaiah 55:8). But the inquisitive may ask why deprive women to lead when there are those who excel much better than men? And the LORD through His prophet wrote, “As for My people, children are their oppressors because women rule over them. Oh! My people, those who lead you cause you to err and destroy the way of your paths” (Isaiah 3:12).

What is Diabetes? (part 2)

e A lth c o R ne R

of mothers with gestational diabetes develop low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) shortly after birth. This is because their own insulin production is high.

Nerve

damage (neuropathy). Too much sugar can injure the walls of the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) that nourish the nerves, especially in the legs. This can cause tingling, numbness, burning or pain that usually begins at the tips of the toes or fingers and gradually spreads upward.

Damage to the nerves related to digestion can cause problems with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. For men, it may lead to erectile dysfunction.

•Kidney damage (nephropathy). The kidneys hold millions of tiny blood vessel clusters (glomeruli) that filter waste from the blood. Diabetes can damage this delicate filtering system.

•Eye damage (retinopathy). Diabetes can damage the blood vessels of the eye (diabetic retinopathy). This could lead to blindness.

•Foot damage. Nerve damage in the feet or poor blood flow to the feet increases the risk of many foot complications.

•Skin and mouth conditions. Diabetes may leave you more prone to skin problems, including bacterial and fungal infections.

•Hearing impairment. Hearing problems are more common in people with diabetes.

•Alzheimer’s disease. Type 2 diabetes may increase the risk of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

•Depression. Depression symptoms are common in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Complications of gestational diabetes

Most women who have gestational diabetes deliver healthy babies. However, untreated or uncontrolled blood sugar levels can cause problems for you and your baby.

Complications in your baby can be caused by gestational diabetes, including:

•Excess growth. Extra glucose can cross the placenta. Extra glucose triggers the baby’s pancreas to make extra insulin. This can cause your baby to grow too large. It can lead to a difficult birth and sometimes the need for a C-section.

•Type 2 diabetes later in life. Babies of mothers who have gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life.

•Death. Untreated gestational diabetes can lead to a baby’s death either before or shortly after birth.

Complications in the mother also can be caused by gestational diabetes, including:

•Preeclampsia. Symptoms of this condition include high blood pressure, too much protein in the urine, and swelling in the legs and feet.

•Gestational diabetes. If you had gestational diabetes in one pregnancy, you’re more likely to have it again with the next pregnancy.

Prevention

Type 1 diabetes can’t be prevented. But the healthy lifestyle choices that help treat prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes can also help prevent them:

•Eat healthy foods. Choose foods lower in fat and calories and higher in fiber. Focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Eat a variety to keep from feeling bored.

•Get more physical activity. Try to get about 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity on most days of the week. Or aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week. For example, take a brisk daily walk. If you can’t fit in a long workout, break it up into smaller sessions throughout the day.

•Lose excess pounds. If you’re overweight, losing even 7% of your body weight can lower the risk of diabetes. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds (90.7 kilograms), losing 14 pounds (6.4 kilograms) can lower the risk of diabetes.

But don’t try to lose weight during pregnancy. Talk to your provider about how much weight is healthy for you to gain during pregnancy.

“Wives submit to your husband as to the LORD. For the husband is head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church and He is the Savior of the body the church” (Ephesians 5:22-23). MC MC

This is for you. I really like what is said here and am going to try my best to follow it. Thank you to the person who wrote this. May God bless us all as we strive to be a blessing to others at this age, especially to our children.

Between 60 and death. It’s time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Don’t just keep it for those who may have no notion of the sacrifices you made to get it. Remember there is nothing more dangerous than a son or daughter-in-law with big ideas for your hardearned capital.

Warning: This is also a bad time for investments, even if it seems wonderful or foolproof. They only bring problems and worries. This is a time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet.

creams well stocked. When you are well-maintained on the outside, it seeps in, making you feel proud and strong.

Don’t lose sight of fashion trends for your age, but keep your own sense of style. You ’ve developed your own sense of what looks good on you –keep it and be proud of it. It ’s part of who you are.

ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make sure you have an active email account and try to use some of those social networks. You’ll be surprised at what old friends you’ll meet.

“Don’t stress over the little things”

Stop worrying about the financial situation of your children and grandchildren, and don’t feel bad spending your money on yourself. You’ve taken care of them for many years, and you’ve taught them what you could. You gave them an education, food, shelter, and support. The responsibility is now theirs to earn their own money.

Don’t stress over the little things. You’ve already overcome so much in your life. You have good memories and bad ones, but the important thing is the present. Don’t let the past drag you down and don’t let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now. Small issues will soon be forgotten.

Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbor and remember: “A man is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection.”

Be proud, both inside and out. Don’t stop going to your hair salon or barber, do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist, keep your perfumes and

Some people embrace their golden years, while others become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter. Spend your time with positive, cheerful people, it’ll rub off on you and your days will seem that much better. Spending your time with bitter people will make you feel older and harder to be around.

Don’t abandon your hobbies. If you don’t have any, make new ones. You can travel, hike, cook, read, dance. You can adopt a cat or a dog, grow a kitchen garden, play cards, checkers, chess, dominoes, golf.

Try to go. Get out of the house, meet people you haven’t seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, go walk through a park. Get out there.

Speak in courteous tones and try not to complain or criticize too much unless you really need to. Try to accept situations as they are.

Pains and discomfort go hand in hand with getting older. Try not to dwell on them but accept them as a part of life.

Laugh. Laugh away your worries Remember, you are one of the lucky ones. You managed to have a life, a long one. Many never get to this age, never get to experience a full life.

My valued friends, enjoy peaceful life at this point in your life ...

Don’t worry... be happy.

According to FMT Magazine, “food and beverage services or F and B service is a professional industry that includes restaurants, bars, cafeterias, canteens, food courts and other food-based hospitality businesses which provide meals to its customers for various purposes like meetings, gatherings, recreation, etc.”

Over the years, the food and beverage industry has developed rapidly and grown significantly as more and more people take their meals outside of their home as travelling to and from the house had become time consuming and/or expensive. There are many interesting developments in the industry that are worth looking into.

The F and B establishments have moved in somewhat opposite directions, some had become more specialized (less offering) while others have become more diversified and offer the widest range of choices on food and drinks for their clients.

The development of “standardized” stores (same menu, same basic store design and layout, standard operating procedures, etc.) had made it easier for the operators to replicate their operations in other places within and outside the mother country. The replication of “standardized” food establishments was further given impetus by the conceptualization of franchising, with the cost of opening up a new store outlet borne by the franchisee (the person or firm that sought the right to establish and operate a tried and tested brand such as McDonald or Starbucks) not only in the home country (e.g. United States for Kentucky Fried Chicken) but also in other countries.

Improvements in food development, handling, preservation, and more efficient transport were also instrumental in the growth of the food

and beverage industry.

The kind of food and/ or beverage business that an aspiring entrepreneur could establish would depend on several factors: interest and knowledge of the proponent, amount of capital, tastes and preferences of the target market, level of competition, and availability of store space. Those with more resources could have a bigger operation and afford to either develop their own concept store or franchise a well-known brand. There are areas where potential clients prefer certain types of food depending on culture or religion (Halal for Muslims) or lifestyle (healthy food for the health-conscious or “comfort food” for young professionals or upper class).

Regardless of the kind of store that you would open, there are certain things that the entrepreneur should be mindful of to ensure the satisfaction of the customers and stability of the enterprise.

First would be the taste, quality, and consistency of the food and/or beverage being offered to customers.

Second, the prices of the items of the menu should be commensurate to the offerings. Expensive or higher priced food and drinks is not necessarily “bad” as prices would depend on brand, quality, and the market.

Third, cleanliness and a “good atmosphere” of the establishment to make the customers trust the safety of your food and/or drinks and a pleasurable experience at your place. The state of the washroom and/or comfort rooms need to be maintained at the highest level of cleanliness and functionality (e.g. water, soap, etc. must be always available).

Fourth, the competence and attitude of your store personnel (starting from the cook or persons preparing the food or drinks, the servers, cashiers, up to the supervisors). Having someone looking after the timely serving of food and caterinng to the needs of customers will always work to the store’s benefit.

Finally, maintain a menu that you can always serve.

diversity with the theme, #BrotherandSisters: Human Fraternity as a Guide in Living in Peace and Establishing Peaceful Communities.

The Human Fraternity Document, signed by the two religious figures during Pope Francis’ trip to United Arab Emirates (UAE) from February 3 to 5 2019, has been described as a “remarkable” document, as it is the result of a historic dialogue between leaders of two of the world’s largest and most influential religions.

In a press statement, Galvez expressed hopes the OPAPRU can address the gaps in Filipino public awareness on the peace document and its laudable objectives.

“The most challenging part of this [effort] is…making people [aware] that this document exists,” Galvez noted, adding this would require an inclusive, integrated and holistic approach focusing on both local and international stakeholders.

The Human Fraternity Document upholds the following principles:

• The firm conviction that authentic teachings of religions invite us to remain rooted in the values of peace;

• Freedom is the right of every person; each individual enjoys the freedom of belief, thought expression and action;

• Justice based on mercy is the path to follow in order to achieve a dignified life to which every human being has a right;

• Dialogue, understanding and the widespread promotion of a culture of tolerance, acceptance of others and of living together peacefully would

“We aim to promote the [Human Fraternity] Document to various international partners such as the United Arab Emirates, United States, Germany, Sweden, France, among others,” Galvez said.

Galvez said the OPAPPRU will also promote the document with government institutions such as the AntiTerrorism Council and other line agencies, including the departments of defense, interior and local government, environment, and the National Commission on Indigenous People.

“At the local level, there is also a need for us to promote the document with the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, ulama councils and other CSOs to secure their support,” he added.

In order to realize and sustain the objective of the Human Fraternity Document, Galvez said the OPAPRU will push for the institutionalization of the document in the government’s national peace agenda.

“This is to ensure the inclusion of the document as a guiding principle in teaching [the] peace education agenda among formal and informal learning institutions in the country,” he emphasized.

Galvez stressed that institutionalizing the Human Fraternity Document will be crucial to the implementation of the proposed executive order that aims to strengthen the mainstreaming of peace education in the basic and higher education sectors.

“Our objective is to promote the culture of peace, enhance community resilience for peace, and provide a proactive approach to counter various forms of recruitment and mobilization by violent extremist groups, especially among vulnerable communities and individuals,” he said.

Suspects in P3.4-M shabu sting charged

ANTI-NARCOTICS agents seized P3.4 million worth of shabu from two peddlers entrapped in Wao town in Lanao del Sur Tuesday, now facing corresponding criminal cases, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao said Thursday.

Rogelito Daculla, director of the PDEA-BARMM, has confirmed the duo, Jamel Sandulong Mabpan, 34, and his 41-year-old accomplice,

Besides shabu, PDEA-BARMM

Deadly love triangle in Marawi

THE 40-year-old second wife who shot dead her husband’s 15-year-old third spouse is not remorseful of what she has done, feared to spark a “rido” between the families of the protagonists to the incident.

Rido is a generic term for clan war in most vernaculars in the Bangsamoro region.

“I don’t resent having done what I have done,” suspect Casmera Ampaso was quoted as saying, in Maranaw language, by members of the Marawi City Police Office.

A video of her asserting so also went viral on Facebook.

Ampaso was immediately arrested and detained after she killed with a .45 caliber pistol her husband’s third 15-year-old spouse in Marawi City on Tuesday afternoon.

Ampaso was reportedly jealous over the overt fondness of her 50-year-old husband, Ayaon, with his slain 15-yearold new wife.

The PRO-BAR said responding police personnel found at the crime scene the .45 caliber pistol used in the murder of the minor, who died from a gunshot wound in the head. JMU
