LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear MIM Friends and Supporters, Each year, MIM strives to make a greater, more meaningful impact in the world community as we share music with guests from around the globe. 2018 was no exception, with the achievement of new milestones in attendance as well as school and youth tour participation, along with nearly three hundred exceptional performances presented on our theater stage. Everything at MIM is about the guest experience, and as such, our offerings must always exceed your expectations, encouraging future visits so you can share your musical adventures with others. As you will see throughout the following pages of our annual report, the investment you are making in MIM is changing lives, and we remain incredibly grateful for your continued support. Similarly, the stewardship provided by MIM’s board of directors is vital to the museum’s success. In addition to their able guidance and expertise, MIM also relies on the diverse knowledge, dedication, and contributions of several other important groups such as MIM’s advisory board, ambassadors, and an enthusiastic core team of volunteers to help advance the organization. Together, they ensure MIM’s mission is carried out successfully and that the museum will thrive for generations. HISTORIC PEDAL STEEL GUITAR ADDED TO THE ELECTRIC GUITAR Paul Bigsby’s first pedal steel guitar, played by Speedy West Since opening in November 2018, MIM’s special exhibition, The Electric Guitar: Inventing an American Icon, has welcomed thousands of guests to explore the early history of amplified music through a collection of more than eighty of the world’s rarest electric guitars and amplifiers. MIM added to the special exhibition a recently restored 1948 T-8 console pedal steel guitar, the first pedal steel made by inventor and electric guitar pioneer Paul Bigsby. Played by western swing artist Speedy West, the rare instrument features three eight-string necks and four foot-operated “tone changer” pedals which enable a wide range of chords and melodic possibilities. The pedal steel guitar’s rare Bigsby horseshoe-style pickups added to West’s signature sound in live performances and recordings. The guitar fell into disrepair and was neglected for years until musician, historian, and collector Deke Dickerson rediscovered it. After matching the instrument’s wood grain with archival photos, Dickerson realized he had found West’s long-lost original Bigsby guitar. MIM is proud to be the first place guests can see this remarkable guitar, arguably the first modern pedal steel, on display since it has been carefully restored to its original condition. This pedal steel guitar joins two other historic instruments on loan from Dickerson: a rare Bigsby “Standard” solid-body electric guitar played by Tommy “Butterball” Paige and an Epiphone archtop guitar that proto-rocker Junior Barnard played with Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys in the 1940s. RARE INSTRUMENTS ACQUIRED LEADING TO MIM’S 10 TH ANNIVERSARY Expanding the museum’s permanent collection Since opening in 2010, MIM has grown its collection to more than 13,500 instruments and objects representing countries and territories from around the world. Leading up to MIM’s tenth anniversary in April 2020, the curatorial team has been acquiring many rare pieces to further build and enhance the museum’s permanent collection. “We’ve been focusing on finding even more instruments of exceptional importance and quality. For many of these, guests will have a hard time finding them anywhere else in the world,” says Manuel Jordán, PhD, MIM’s deputy director and chief curator. 4

There are many ways MIM acquires instruments and associated artifacts. Some of the instruments in MIM’s collection were even, until recently, still being played in their places of origin. Some were created by instrument makers specifically for MIM and others were purchased from or donated by private collectors or collections. When an instrument can only be acquired by physically going to the source, curators will travel there, sometimes to remote locations. While doing fieldwork, curators also obtain exhibit video and photography and establish relationships with other institutions and artists.

Instruments acquired by MIM are selected based on their construction and fine craftsmanship, the reputation of their makers, their special provenance, or their connection to significant musicians. Many rare acquisitions have been added to MIM’s Geographic Galleries in recent years, and these efforts will accelerate as MIM approaches its tenth anniversary. LATIN AMERICA GALLERY Since 2016, Daniel Piper, PhD, MIM’s curator for Latin America and the Caribbean, has acquired ninety-three instruments resulting from fieldwork, one of several methods he uses to acquire objects. Trips included Brazil, Cuba, Paraguay, and five other countries. When seeking acquisitions in the field or from private collectors, Piper prioritizes instruments from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s as well as ones played by iconic Latin American artists. One of those acquisitions is the original set of tambores batá (below) from the band Irakere, a Grammy-winning Afro-Cuban jazz band directed by Chucho Valdés. The batá is a

ceremonial instrument, and this one was played by the most important band to fuse Afro-Cuban ceremonial music with jazz and Cuban dance music and bring that style to an international stage. Another instrument acquired for the Latin America Gallery is Grammy-winning Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida’s classical guitar (below). Almeida was also a prolific composer and performer who contributed to nearly eight hundred Hollywood studio tracks and dozens of film scores. During his early career, he collected on the face of this guitar the signatures of actors and musicians including Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, Bing Crosby, and

Celebrity signatures, including Bing Crosby’s, on Almeida’s 1930s guitar Bob Hope. Piper also acquired the mid1940s bombo drum played by Víctor “Cocho” Zambrano, cofounder of Los Chalchaleros, one of the most recorded folk groups in Latin America. Piper traveled to Salta, Argentina, and met with Zambrano’s children to acquire his bombo. ASIA GALLERY

In coming months, the Japan exhibit in MIM’s Asia Gallery will be updated to feature more than thirty rare instruments from the collection of the late Takao Oikawa, a passionate music teacher and Japanese instrument collector from Tokyo. One piece is 5

EUROPE GALLERY Varieties of mandolins can be found around the world, but the instrument holds an especially rich history in European music. MIM recently purchased sixty-four mandolins and other plucked lutes, dating from the 1700s to 1900s, from the collection of mandolinist, teacher, and conductor Raymond Zéliker. In Le Mans, France, Zéliker founded Clair Accord, a mandolin orchestra that played together for over thirty-six years. He shared his collection in Histoire de Mandolines, a small museum which he established in 1994 in the historic district of Le Mans. MIM is proud to acquire Zéliker’s fine collection of plucked string instruments and continue to share their history with generations to come.

Details of the artistry on the 19th-century koto zither a nearly six-foot-long koto zither (above) from Japan’s Meiji period. Decorated in raisedgold maki-e lacquer, the stringed instrument features idyllic landscapes and inlaid origami cranes. Another rare instrument is a biwa lute made in 1675 and painted with beautiful spring scenery and cherry blossoms. These and other highlights from Oikawa’s collection, which was renowned throughout Japan, date back as far as 1391 and will make up more than half of the updated Japan exhibit. The other portion will showcase Japanese ritual and theater music. One highlight of this section is a Hannya mask used to portray tragic female ghost characters in No dramas that was made and donated by important mask-maker Hideyuki Torihata last summer. The haunting mask is carved so that when the actor looks straight ahead, the expression is vengeful and angry, but when he looks down, the mask depicts the ghost’s feelings of remorse. 6

Varying in shape and size, the mandolins and plucked lutes will enhance exhibits including Italy, France, Portugal, Germany, England, Switzerland, Ukraine, Russia, Spain, and Brazil this year. The collection features both historic and modern examples, including a 1922 model No. 5b mandolin (right) made by renowned Italian luthier Luigi Embergher, a model that was referred to as “perhaps the most beautiful mandolin ever made” in Graham McDonald’s book The Mandolin: A History. 1922 model No. 5b mandolin

The Zéliker collection also features some more experimental plucked lutes, including doublenecked creations such as the Portuguese mandolin-cavaquinho. AFRICA GALLERY MIM’s Africa Gallery features a comprehensive collection representing both ritual and ceremonial objects from diverse ethnic groups throughout the continent. Recently, MIM acquired several rare instruments and objects that further enhance the collection and expand the territories represented.

Ancient bells from the Benin Kingdom on display at the Nigeria exhibit One of those pieces is a beautiful harp (left) from the 1800s that belonged to the Ngbandi people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The instrument includes a beautiful carved head as part of the harp’s neck and represents a chief’s lineage. Another notable acquisition is a set of three ancient bronze bells (above), one dating to the 1000s. The bells act as instruments but were also worn as pendants by the ruling class or warriors. MIM also acquired a rare idiophone from Gabon with male and female figurative pegs. Played with beaters, it is the only idiophone with two figurative pegs known to exist. In celebration of its upcoming tenth anniversary, MIM is creating a catalog showcasing exhibit highlights as well as some of the rarest and most visually stunning musical instruments throughout the galleries. Featuring beautiful photography, the publication will include pieces from around the world and share fascinating insights into MIM’s diverse collection. THE IMPACT OF MUSICAL ADVENTURES Class participants develop an enhanced cultural awareness

The MIMkids Musical Adventures program teaches children about the world’s cultures through music. In each hour-long class, fifteen to twenty students participate in music making, create instruments, and explore galleries while developing important academic and social skills such as verbally and artistically articulating ideas as well as working alone and with others. Designed for children ages 6–10, Musical Adventures classes are offered twice a month and focus on a different geographic region each session, providing a well-rounded perspective. For seven-year-old Xavier, a Musical Adventures participant for over a year, the class has increased his desire to explore the world and enhanced his global awareness. At home, Xavier continues his learning by researching cultures on YouTube, listening to music, and asking questions. He re-creates a similar experience to Musical Adventures by making imaginary lands and drawing corresponding maps, assigning cultural details to the inhabitants, and building musical instruments for them to use.

“Musical Adventures is fun and friendly. However, we’re also seeing that participants are demonstrating a greater global knowledge and appreciation for the world’s cultures,” says Katherine Palmer, DMA, MIM’s curator of education. “In an increasingly global age, we hope that empowering youth with understanding creates a stronger world community.” Recently, Palmer and Nathan Botts, MIM’s museum educator, were invited to write an article for the scholarly publication Curator: The Museum Journal that includes interviews with several Musical Adventures students and focuses on the class’s takeaways. MIM is grateful to Jim Widland and Julie Neerken for supporting MIMkids Musical Adventures. MIM APPOINTS NEW INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT DIRECTOR Helping MIM achieve long-term sustainability MIM is delighted to welcome Laure O’Neal as its new director of institutional advancement (IA). O’Neal brings to MIM more than twenty years of experience in fundraising and management within higher education, health care, and public-sector organizations; most recently she was senior director of principal giving at Arizona State University (ASU) Foundation. We spoke with O’Neal recently about her new role at MIM. What is your approach to helping MIM achieve sustainability? A former colleague once shared that loyalty is the holy grail of fundraising. A successful and sustained fundraising program is one built upon personal and authentic donor relationships. The goal of the IA team is to cultivate lifelong relationships with our donors and identify opportunities for their gifts to have a lasting impact. How do your passions align with the work you are doing at MIM? I was raised with the notion that we should all make our mark and leave a legacy as we exist in this world. It is my passion to learn about people—who they are, where they came from, and what they love. For example, I recently met with a family who frequents MIM and loves our family-friendly programming. We discussed ways to share the joy of MIM with more families. Our team looks forward to helping them and others explore ways to align their philanthropy with their passions. Why are music and culture important to the community? MIM is such a unique treasure and matter of community pride. Arts and culture are important for so many reasons. DONOR SPOTLIGHT: JIM AND KATHY HENDERSON Blended giving—investments in MIM’s present and future Jim and Kathy Henderson have moved many times throughout their lives, but one thing remains constant wherever they are—their philanthropic contributions to local museums and education. Today, the Hendersons are part of MIM’s Producer’s Circle, supporting the MIM Music Theater, and help provide A World of Musical Journeys field trips to MIM for underserved students. In looking ahead, as part of MIM’s Legacy Circle, they have also established a planned gift that will continue their annual support well into the future. “We’ve lived in Minneapolis, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, and New York, where museums have been around for over one hundred years and have large endowments,” says Jim. “It’s interesting to see a museum like MIM that’s still fairly young go from startup to something that’s sustainable. It’s important to us to give MIM meaningful dollars in a way that will secure its legacy moving forward. It is nice to know that our annual Circle of Friends support will be funded permanently for the museum.” 16

BEHIND THE SCENES OF MIM’S MUSIC THEATER What it takes to put on a concert from start to finish In 2018, the MIM Music Theater presented more than 290 concerts featuring musicians from around the world. Behind each concert is a dedicated theater team that helps create an enjoyable and entertaining experience for both artists and concertgoers. Lowell Pickett, artistic director for the MIM Music Theater, books all national and international artists who perform in the theater. He also establishes close relationships with musicians and booking agencies to represent a rich diversity of genres and artists at concerts. Patrick Murphy, theater manager, handles booking for a local artist series, I Am AZ Music®, and oversees day-to-day operations of the theater. 20

“The MIM Music Theater is well suited for so many types of music,” says Pickett. “We aim to highlight artists of the highest level of virtuosity, emerging artists, music that just makes people feel good, and music that expands people’s horizons and lets them experience other cultures.” Composed of a production manager, lead audio engineer, and lead lighting designer, the technical team ensures that artists have everything they need on stage for a concert; the team’s work highlights the theater’s intimacy and superb acoustics. The hospitality team, which includes an artist coordinator, house managers, and drivers, makes sure both artists and concertgoers feel comfortable at MIM. One driver,

Linda Mighdoll, gifts each artist her favorite dark chocolate on their way to MIM. Once artists arrive for a concert, they load in their gear and set up on stage. Joel Harris, MIM’s lead audio engineer and systems technician, tests functionality of all audio, lighting, and video systems and confirms gear preferences and needs. Sound check takes place next—artists rehearse a few songs while MIM’s team tests sound levels, sets up monitors and sound reinforcement, discusses lighting, and makes other necessary adjustments. Before a performance, artists are encouraged to tour MIM, have dinner, and relax in the theater’s green room. “When artists are at MIM, we hope they will tour the museum so they can better understand who and what we are. We want them to feel like they are not just a part of the world of music, but also a part of MIM while they are here,” says Murphy. During a concert, Shawna Grimes, MIM’s theater technician and lighting designer, runs

For example, for an upbeat song she may select pinks, brighter reds, and yellows, while for a ballad she may pick blues and deep purples. “The function of lighting in our theater is to accent what’s happening onstage and help convey the mood that songs are trying to express through words and rhythm,” says Grimes. MIM’s Music Theater recently updated its lighting from conventional lights to an LED system. In addition to being more energy and cost efficient, the LED lighting allows for hundreds of thousands of colors and more options for creativity. Each concert presented in the MIM Music Theater is truly a team effort, combining the skill sets and specialties of many different team members.

TEAM MEMBER CONCERT PICKS MIM team members share their spring concert choices

Novo Amor | Mar. 6 Layers of instrumentals accompanied by sonic vocals make for a killer indie sound from singer-songwriter Novo Amor. Portuguese for “new love,” Novo Amor (Welsh musician Ali Lacey) pours head and heart into every song, showcasing unearthly falsettos with melodic, uplifting music. Langston Hughes’s Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz featuring the Ron McCurdy Quartet | Apr. 26 I love interdisciplinarity in the arts, and this show combines poetry, spoken word, videography, and music for a beautiful performance of a truly unique literary work. ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: TINSLEY ELLIS AND COCO MONTOYA A celebration of blues-rock fusion With more than eighty combined years of experience performing as electric guitarists and vocalists, Tinsley Ellis and Coco Montoya are at the top of their game. Both present unique styles as artists but share a passion for blues-rock. This spring, Ellis and Montoya will perform at the MIM Music Theater as part of a concert series in celebration of MIM’s special exhibition, The Electric Guitar: Inventing an American Icon. The exhibition explores the impact of amplified music on various musical genres by tracing the early history of the electric guitar. In blues-rock fusion, the instruments heard in traditional blues are amplified in the style of rock and roll. “As the use of the electric guitar is one of the defining features of blues-rock, this performance ties in perfectly with the themes shared in the exhibition,” says Patrick Murphy, MIM’s theater manager. Southern blues-rock guitarist, vocalist, and singer-songwriter Ellis discovered the blues through British Invasion bands including the Rolling Stones and the Animals as well as Southern rockers such as the Allman Brothers. Ellis has performed with artists including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Otis Rush, and Willie Dixon. Taught by the “Master of the Telecaster,” Albert Collins, Montoya shares the blues’ hardest truths through expressive vocals and dynamic guitar playing. After playing with Collins and then John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, he became a soloist in 1993 and has since released eight albums. SPRING HAS SPRUNG Take in the beauty of MIM this season MIM’s galleries are full of sights and sounds from around the world, but spend some time outside during your next visit and you’ll find there is even more to take in. Especially during spring, the museum is surrounded by vibrant blooms of trees, cacti, and other plants native to Arizona and desert climates. Some favorites include Engelmann’s prickly pear, which is harvested in the fall for dishes at Café Allegro, and the foothill palo verde, which blooms in bright yellow flowers during the late spring. MIM’s grounds also feature some interesting instruments and sculptures. On your way into the museum, snap a photo with the new “MIM” sign (bottom left) and notice the large slit drums with carved faces from Vanuatu (top left). In the main courtyard, see Phoenix, a rotating bronze sculpture of blended instrumental forms. During this time of year, also listen to the peaceful music of birds and water fountains around MIM’s grounds.

VOLUNTEER TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Meet the VTM CORE Team Shannon Barth

MIM’s Volunteer CORE (Communication, Outreach, Response, Empowerment) Team consists of a group of volunteer team members (VTMs) who share a strong commitment to MIM’s mission and vision. Currently, it is made up of six members, Shannon Barth, Dawn Busby, Meredyth Corbett, Michael Perkins, Doug Whitney, and Jan Wood, who bring a variety of experiences from the different areas where they volunteer. By meeting regularly with members of the Volunteer Department and MIM’s senior leadership, CORE members help address the needs, concerns, and opportunities of more than four hundred VTMs. Members serve a one-year term, then have the option to renew for a second year. “The VTM CORE Team enhances the communication between team members and volunteers,” says Meredyth Corbett, a CORE member who volunteers as a museum and gallery guide and usher in the MIM Music Theater. “I listen to helpful and supportive concerns of volunteers and feel I am able to share this information with people who can help them.”

The CORE members also ensure that MIM continues to offer an excellent guest experience by being observant throughout the museum, leading with a friendly demeanor and guest-focused approach to problem-solving, and facilitating strong communication among the volunteer team. “I find that as a CORE member, I am more likely to look at all aspects of MIM services rather than just those that impact me directly,” says Doug Whitney, who volunteers as an Experience Gallery, museum, and Target Gallery guide and as an usher. In the spring, two new members will join: Paula Bollogh and Margaret Wilson. MIM is grateful for the dedication and support of all VTMs in sharing MIM’s mission and helping foster an appreciation of the world’s music and cultures. ▪
