ON THE COVER MIM field trips provide students from Phoenix and beyond transformational opportunities to engage with the creative spirit of people from around the world through music. In 2023, more than 47,000 students saw and heard and learned about the musical traditions of the world in our galleries, explored the science of sound, and made music in our hands-on Experience Gallery. MIM is grateful for the generous support of donors who help make these opportunities possible—donors such as Luke Putney, who got to see firsthand a STEM tour made possible through his gift and whose inspiring story you can read on page 27.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear MIM Friends and Supporters, Thanks to your sustained and generous support, MIM continues to make an impact in our community. We are excited to share several notable accomplishments from 2023 in this Annual Report edition of Quarter Notes.

As our attendance grows, we continue to prioritize a world-class guest experience that includes ever-changing galleries, dynamic programming, and the incredible 300-seat MIM Music Theater.

During a recent visit, you might have noticed redesigned exhibits showcasing remarkable new acquisitions (page 6) or learned more about unique stories of musical innovation in our special exhibition, Acoustic America: Iconic Guitars, Mandolins, and Banjos (page 4). These exciting acquisitions and expansive exhibitions are a testament to our curatorial team, which continues to seek out the finest instruments for our collection. We have more exciting gallery updates in store this year, and we hope you’ll have a chance to see them all.

This year, we’re looking forward to presenting several new family-friendly Signature Events that feature local and international partnerships (page 16). And we remain committed to our goal of bringing more students to the museum for a fun and enriching field trip. Our exceptional volunteer team also continues to grow, and in 2023 more than 450 active volunteer team members dedicated more than 44,000 hours to making MIM a truly exceptional place for our guests.

The MIM Music Theater brings in a wide range of remarkable talent from around the world year-round, and the Winter/Spring Concert Series features many artists making a return visit to MIM (page 22). We look forward to announcing our Summer Concert Series on March 27 and continuing our ambitious programming schedule of nearly 300 shows per year. azfoothills.com

VOLUNTEER TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: FELECIA CLACK Sharing MIM’s mission with guests Felecia Clack joined MIM as a volunteer team member last year. Clack is passionate about MIM’s mission and programming and often serves as a gallery guide and a greeter at Signature Events.

Why did you decide to start volunteering at MIM? My father was a musician in the Fifth United States Army Band for over 35 years, thus music has been a part of my life since birth. . . . It is in my DNA. I consider it a privilege to be an emissary of our museum, give back to the community, meet and interact with our guests, and share why music is the language of the soul!

Why did you choose to volunteer as a gallery guide and Signature Event greeter?

I am a people person and enjoy greeting

guests with a welcoming smile and letting them know we appreciate them taking time to visit.

What has been your favorite MIM experience so far?

I’ve had many, but the opportunity to serve as an artist liaison for Celebrate the Blues was a favorite MIM experience. I greeted our guests as they arrived. It was wonderful to see our guests singing along with the artists, tapping their feet, clapping their hands—and a few were even dancing in the theater lobby to the beat of the incredible sounds of the blues.

How do guests respond to the museum?

Our guests love our museum! I look forward to hearing them say “Wow!” when they walk through our doors, especially those who are visiting for the first time. ▪ 3

ACOUSTIC AMERICA SPOTLIGHT: LLOYD LOAR The legacy of an iconic instrument maker The exceptional instruments presented in Acoustic America: Iconic Guitars, Mandolins, and Banjos illustrate diverse origins, distinctive voices, and notable achievements in musical innovation. Perhaps foremost among these innovators is famed Gibson acoustic engineer Lloyd Loar, whose influential designs set the template for acoustic instruments for years to come.

While working for Gibson between 1918 and 1924, Loar introduced now-famous designs to Gibson’s instrument line, distinguishing the company from its competitors and creating instruments that played better, sounded clearer, and produced more volume in the

era before electric amplification. Inspired by legendary luthiers such as Antonio Stradivari, Loar applied violin construction principles in refining Gibson’s premiere Master Model line of carved-top mandolins and guitars. The Master Model line influenced long-lasting genres of music and became the instruments of choice for some of the world’s best musicians, such as bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe, who is closely associated with a 1923 Gibson F-5 model mandolin.

Instruments signed and dated by Loar are highly sought after by collectors and musicians. Several Loar-signed instruments are on display in Acoustic America, including

the 1920s,” says senior curator Rich Walter, who curated Acoustic America. “These designs were radical at the time but are absolutely iconic today.”

Loar’s personal F-5 mandolin (above) and 19th-century tenor viola, which are recent additions to MIM’s permanent collection thanks to previous owners Roger and Rosemary Siminoff, who considered MIM the perfect place for the preservation and appreciation of these historic items. The F-5 mandolin is part of a batch signed February 18, 1924—only a few instruments were signed with this date, and they are considered the best of their kind. The mandolin and viola each feature an original Virzi Tone Producer, which Loar thought enhanced each instrument’s sound. He liked the accessory so much that he recommended they be installed on all of Gibson’s Master Model mandolin-family instruments.

Loar was a pioneer in acoustic engineering and changed the way that generations of luthiers crafted their instruments. The influence of Loar’s designs can be traced throughout Acoustic America. For example, the John Monteleone-made Grand Artist mandolin that greets guests as they enter the Target Gallery is a modernized expression of the F-5 mandolin, and the L-5 archtop guitar set the template for the models built by John D’Angelico, America’s greatest archtop guitar maker. And Loar’s designs are still the benchmark for instruments made today.

“Loar truly believed in creating the bestsounding acoustic instruments,” Walter says, “and, to his great credit, many players and luthiers agree the Gibson models that bear his signature remain unsurpassed a century later.” ▪

Acoustic America also features a rare complete quartet of Loar-signed Master Model instruments (opposite page), generously on loan from mandolin virtuoso David Grisman.

The quartet consists of a 1924 F-5 mandolin, a 1924 K-5 mandocello, a 1923 H-5 mandola, and a 1924 L-5 archtop guitar. A gathering of these instruments is exceedingly rare, as only 25 original H-5 mandolas and eight signed K-5 mandocellos are known to exist today.

REIMAGINED JAZZ AND BLUES EXHIBITS IN THE UNITED STATES / CANADA GALLERY New acquisitions highlight historic, artist-owned instruments With new acquisitions come unique opportunities to redesign and enhance the galleries. Over the past several years, MIM has acquired numerous historic and artist-owned jazz and blues instruments, prompting recent transformations to exhibits in the United States / Canada Gallery.

When the “Pannonica Piano”—a 1956 Steinway Model M owned by jazz patron Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter and played by Thelonious Monk and countless jazz greats—arrived at MIM last year, it spurred a redesign of the Jazz exhibit. To accommodate the piano’s size and to ensure that it had a place as the centerpiece of the exhibit, MIM’s exhibit design and preparator teams designed, fabricated, and installed a new, larger platform to house it.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to design holistically, creating visual and thematic 6

connections while allotting enough space for each object to shine,” says exhibit designer Shelby Sickler. “My goal is to support and effectively communicate the curator’s narrative through the exhibit design and object display. I hope that guests can enjoy the story of jazz as a whole while discovering new objects and insights along the way.”

The new platform is home to the exhibit’s new Jazz All-Stars display, an exhibit that showcases MIM’s collection of instruments owned and played by jazz greats. In addition to the “Pannonica Piano,” the platform also features recent additions such as Eric Dolphy’s Selmer Super Balanced Action alto saxophone, Lionel Hampton’s Deagan “King George” vibraharp, and Gerry Mulligan’s C. G. Conn B-35 baritone saxophone. Many of these acquisitions were made through the generosity of the Robert J. Ulrich and Diane Sillik Fund.

“Jazz is a crucial genre of music that has influenced an untold number of traditions around the world,” says senior curator Rich Walter. “MIM’s jazz collection is truly outstanding and is now displayed in a way that brings guests close to some of the greatest artists in history.”

In addition to expanding the Jazz exhibit, the new platform also allowed the Blues exhibit to expand. Now doubled in size, the redesigned Blues exhibit features a broader array of instruments that represent a more complete story and help guests appreciate the genre more fully. New additions such as a 1913 upright piano and a replica of an 18th-century gourd banjo join artist-owned highlights such as Stevie Ray Vaughan’s guitar amplifier and harmonicas played by legends Sonny Terry and Paul Butterfield, all of which portray unique facets of the blues’ many eras and styles.

“The entire MIM team continuously aims to improve the guest experience in all ways,” Walter says. “With new instrument highlights and thoughtful use of gallery spaces, our trend toward stronger exhibits will only create more positive impressions and stronger memories.” ▪ 7

EXPERIENCE MUSICAL TRADITIONS AT UPCOMING SIGNATURE EVENTS Exciting partnerships create new, engaging guest experiences says Marie Long, MIM’s community engagement manager. “This year, we are especially excited about a new international partnership with Luthieros, a musical family traveling direct from Greece who respect and promote Greek musical heritage, both ancient and modern.”

Luthieros will perform and lead a workshop at Experience Greece on July 13 and 14— one of several new Signature Event themes scheduled for 2024.

Luthieros Signature Events bring MIM’s galleries to life by celebrating the world’s diverse music with engaging, family-friendly programs year-round. Through exciting local and international partnerships, MIM will present new programs and performances this year in addition to familiar guest favorites.

Some of MIM’s most popular Signature Events focus on music from a specific country or geographic area.

“Attending one of MIM’s Experience programs provides guests with an opportunity to not only learn about these countries and regions, but also to connect with their community,”

Monthly Signature Events—which also include programs focused on musical genres and iconic musical artists—are an opportunity for guests to engage with local community organizations that represent and celebrate the diversity of music in Arizona.

“We are excited to partner with Harmony Project Phoenix as a community partner for Celebrate Latin Jazz,” Long says of the community partner for the April 20 and 21 Signature Event. “The organization’s motto is ‘Changing Lives, One Note at a Time,’ and it is dedicated to providing free, high-quality music education to children from low-income communities, empowering them to flourish and excel.” ▪

BEHIND THE SCENES OF MIM’S LANDSCAPING Highlighting the natural beauty of the desert MIM’s galleries are full of unique sights and sounds from around the world, and there’s even more to take in on the museum’s grounds. Landscape supervisor Michael Klacking, horticulturist Kyla Johnson, and their team have been hard at work helping the museum harmonize with the desert landscape that surrounds it.

Michael, tell us about the recent landscaping changes at MIM. My vision is to create a landscape that’s as fun to experience outside as the collection and exhibits are on the inside. We are adding over a hundred new plant species, many of which are Arizona natives, that will provide more flowering throughout the year and attract a variety of pollinators. We have also made irrigation changes to encourage plants to grow deeper roots, which makes them more drought resistant.

What kinds of unique plants can guests see at MIM? Visitors not from the area often marvel at the green bark of the palo verde, and MIM has 24

over 150 palo verde trees on our grounds.

Whimsical-looking palo blanco trees can be seen near MIM’s front entrance, and these trees have white bark, which reflects the heat of the sun.

How does MIM’s landscaping support the museum’s mission?

The landscape surrounding MIM is designed to create a fun and welcoming environment for guests, whether they’re eating lunch from Café Allegro in the courtyard or celebrating a momentous event such as a wedding.

New signs identifying the native and desertadapted plants will help guests learn what they are, fostering MIM’s values of learning and education. ▪

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: LUKE PUTNEY Sharing the joy of music with future generations through a generous gift Music has been a life-changing force for Luke Putney. The founder of the nonprofit foundation Instrumental Horizons, Putney supports organizations, like MIM, that give kids the opportunity to change their lives through music.

As a teenager, Putney lost his sight, but he also found a passion—he fell in love with the bass guitar, experiencing firsthand the joy and healing power of music.

MIM on field trips. Putney first heard about MIM through a mentor, who thought the museum’s gigantic octobasse would interest the bassist. But MIM’s educational programming also inspired his giving.

“I chose to support MIM because of the amazing music education it provides to school children and people of all ages,” Putney says.

While earning his music performance degree from Belmont University, Putney founded Instrumental Horizons to share that joy.

The Nashville-based nonprofit has provided music therapy and musical instruments to children in hospitals and underserved communities and around the world. Putney jokes that he wants to be “the Santa Claus of musical instruments.”

Last September, Putney visited MIM with his mother, Nancy Hoddinott—on the same day, as it happened, that students from Heritage Elementary School in the Peoria Unified School District were taking a STEM tour made possible through Putney’s donation. He was thrilled by how excited the kids were to learn about music and to experience the audio and visual presentation of MIM’s galleries.

“Our only regret is being unable to stay longer,” Hoddinott says. ▪ 27

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: JIM AND BARBARA RATCLIFF Securing a long-lasting legacy through music Jim and Barbara Ratcliff still remember bringing Barbara’s grandson, Roman, to MIM when he was 12.

“He immediately spied the grand piano in the entryway, asked if he could play it, and, when the answer was yes, began his love of music,” Barbara says. “He was fascinated with all the instruments and the cultures. In high school, he studied music and joined a band, and most recently he began his university studies to become a music teacher. We cannot imagine a more wonderful impact and legacy of a visit to MIM.” The Ratcliffs have supported MIM for years as members and as part of MIM’s Producer’s Circle. When Jim retired, the Ratcliffs found themselves in the position to extend their legacy to reflect how important music is to their family. They decided to further their contribution to MIM by joining the Legacy Circle and establishing a planned gift to the museum.

Legacy Circle members support MIM by including gifts to the museum in their wills, trusts, retirement plans, and life insurance policies. Planned gifts are an investment in MIM’s mission, ensuring that the museum and its programs remain vital resources for generations to come.

Through their contribution, the Ratcliffs hope to ensure MIM’s long-term success and inspire even more people to discover the joy of music.

“We both love live music and the role music plays in bringing people together,” Barbara says. “We admire the craft of the instrument and the artist.
