As always, we are pleased to add unique acquisitions to our galleries, such as the instruments in the new Madonna exhibit in the Artist Gallery, which reveal the musical origins of one of the world’s most famous pop stars. We are also thrilled to see so many new and returning guests in our special exhibition Stradivarius and the Golden Age of Violins and Guitars, which showcases the artistry of extraordinary string instrument makers. We continue to welcome thousands of students to the museum for field trip tours, and we are grateful to our phenomenal volunteer team members, whose dedication helps every guest enjoy a fun and welcoming experience at MIM.

Throughout the year, our calendar is filled with engaging programs and activities. In the spring, Café Allegro hosts wine dinners and other dining events in MIM’s Main Courtyard. The MIM Music Theater continues to add an astonishing variety of international artists to the Winter/ Spring Concert Series lineup, and in April, we will unveil our first concerts of the 2025 Summer Concert Series.

April also marks an exciting milestone: MIM’s 15th anniversary. We hope that you will join us for our Celebrate MIM’s 15th Anniversary Signature Event on April 4, 5, and 6, which will feature live performances, musical instrument demonstrations, and more family-friendly activities.

VOLUNTEER TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

15-Year VTMs share their favorite memories of MIM

Since MIM’s opening day on April 24, 2010, volunteer team members (VTMs) have played an essential role in creating warm and engaging experiences for MIM’s guests. We asked four VTMs who have been with MIM since the beginning to share cherished memories from their time at the museum.

“I signed up to volunteer at MIM in 2010, the same year I retired from teaching strings in Scottsdale schools. I had not anticipated how much I would miss my string students, and the opportunity to lead field trips at MIM meant that I would be able to continue to enjoy working with kids and music. “TARTINI” VIOLIN

Antonio Stradivari, 1726

The “Tartini” violin was made during Stradivari’s late period, when he was making his most mature masterpieces. Because the instrument is a Stradivarius, every detail is perfect. The outer edges and the decorative purfling inside the edges of the top and back plates are especially beautifully crafted, and the scroll at the top of the instrument is elegant and geometrically precise.

Attributed to Heinrich Tieffenbrucker, c. 1540

Ivory lutes are exceedingly rare. This one is attributed to Heinrich Tieffenbrucker of the prolific, multigenerational Tieffenbrucker family of instrument makers. Its back has 15 ivory staves, and its outer ivory shell is supported by thin strips of paper, which can be seen through the sound hole. Typical of Renaissance lutes, the headstock of this instrument sits at a 90-degree angle from the neck. The lute is finished with an ivory clasp and pegs.

GUITAR

Matteo Sellas, late 1630s

Matteo Sellas is probably the most renowned guitar maker of the 17th century. This guitar’s back has 23 fluted rosewood staves with ivory dividers and its top is made of spruce, with ivory, ebony, and mastic inlays and a delicate tiered rose. The neck is veneered in ebony with an ivory vine inlay on the back and ivory placards engraved with Italian scenes on the fretboard. The guitar still has its original nameplate with the Sellas crown on the headstock.

MUSICAL ICON MADONNA JOINS THE ARTIST GALLERY

New exhibit features instruments Madonna used to make her first songs

The newest exhibit in MIM’s Artist Gallery illustrates the musical origins of one of the world’s most famous and influential superstars: Madonna.

When Madonna Louise Ciccone moved to New York City in 1978, she intended to become a professional dancer, but she soon found another way to express her creativity when she joined brothers Dan and Ed Gilroy in the band Breakfast Club and learned to play guitar and drums. MIM has acquired several instruments Madonna used during this period, offering guests a glimpse into the earliest days of the legendary pop star’s career.

Madonna gave some of her first musical performances on the sidewalks of Manhattan. Dressed in white with bandmate Dan Gilroy, she played a Rickenbacker Model 450 electric guitar through a portable battery-powered Pignose amplifier for pedestrians on the street. Both the guitar and the amp are now on display in the Artist Gallery.

As a member of Breakfast Club, Madonna performed at venues such as New York City’s famous CBGB, one of history’s most revered stages for punk, rock, and alternative music. The Slingerland drum set she played has been preserved in its original condition; it is still missing the resonant bass drum head, just as it was when Madonna played it. There is also still a piece of Madonna’s bubble gum stuck to the metal hardware between the rack toms—a detail of the pop star’s punk rock past.

An unassuming but historically significant instrument in the exhibit is the Carlo Robellibranded acoustic guitar. In 1979, Madonna began her personal songwriting career on this modest instrument, using it to write and record her very first song, “Tell the Truth.” The exhibit features a rare audio clip from the original home recording of this early milestone in Madonna’s career.

On these instruments, Madonna honed the skills she would soon use to establish her boundary-breaking, best-selling reign as an international cultural icon and the “Queen of Pop.”

TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: LINDA KIRSH AND TERRA SMITH

Registrars manage MIM’s extraordinary collection

Registrar Linda Kirsh and associate registrar Terra Smith manage MIM’s collection of more than 12,000 instruments and objects from around the world, ensuring that every piece is properly documented and cared for. By diligently stewarding each object in the collection, with expert help from other back of house teams, Linda and Terra help MIM build strong relationships with lenders, sellers, donors, and other important external contacts.

Terra joined MIM’s Guest Service team in 2020 and earned promotions to team lead and supervisor before moving to the registration department. Linda has been working with MIM’s collection for more than 15 years, starting as a receiving coordinator before beginning her work as a registrar in 2011.

Linda and Terra coordinate logistics for MIM’s acquisitions, donations, and loans and maintain meticulous records of every object’s

history, condition, and location. They write contracts, process payments, and oversee instruments when they arrive at the museum, and they safeguard MIM’s collection by making sure each object arrives at and leaves the museum safely and is properly covered under MIM’s insurance policies.

“We work behind the scenes, but we’re so connected to the other departments in the museum,” Terra says.

Shipping is a major responsibility for the registrars, who direct every object’s journey to and from MIM. Many factors affect the transportation of instruments from around the world, such as distance, environmental conditions like temperature and humidity, and international customs, laws, and restrictions. Planning each shipment requires rigorous investigation and management.

“We must be very particular about saying, ‘What is the object made of? How fragile is it? What permits might it require to ship it?’” Terra says.

“Sometimes shipping a piano is easier than shipping a guitar,” Linda says.

When coordinating shipping arrangements, the registrars must communicate carefully and clearly with dealers, donors, and lenders who speak many languages.

“There’s a lot of trust that builds over time and needs our attention with dealers, lenders, and donors,” Linda says. “When an instrument is in transit to MIM, you feel utterly responsible for it.”

Once an object arrives at the museum, one of the registrars unpacks it and checks its condition before cataloging it in the museum’s database. When loaned objects join MIM’s collection, the registrar ensures that each loan’s environmental and display requirements are met. For instance, a delicate instrument’s low light tolerance might dictate where it can be safely displayed, so the registrar works with curators, exhibit designers, and preparators to ensure that this requirement is satisfied.

“If we demonstrate that MIM treats loaned instruments with great care and respect, those lenders tell their networks, and those connections enable our curators to bring in really amazing objects,” Terra says.

Linda and Terra also ensure that lenders are appropriately acknowledged while their objects are on display, and they relay museum requests on loaned instruments to lenders—for example, if the museum wants to include a loaned instrument in marketing material or if a loaned historical instrument requires treatment from MIM’s conservator.

“It’s a great responsibility and privilege to care for MIM’s collection, and it’s a wonderful feeling to see guests enjoying the instruments we helped bring to the museum,” Linda says. ▪

MUSIC STUDENTS ENJOY STRADIVARIUS AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF VIOLINS AND GUITARS

High school orchestra visits MIM on a tailored field trip

In December 2024, chamber orchestra students from Casteel High School in Queen Creek, Arizona, took a field trip to experience MIM’s special exhibition Stradivarius and the Golden Age of Violins and Guitars.

Victoria Choin, who directs the orchestra, learned about the special exhibition from a post on social media. She thought that the special exhibition—and the opportunity for young musicians to see historical string instruments up close—would complement the studies of her advanced orchestra students, who learn music history and music theory in addition to performance technique. Education associate Sarah Miller helped Choin coordinate a Trailblazer TeacherGuided Tour for the group, whose members

range from 8th to 12th grade and play violin, viola, cello, and bass.

The students were eager to see the exhibition’s extraordinary and sought-after string instruments, including Antonio Stradivari’s 1726 “Tartini” violin.

“I was really excited to see the Stradivarius instruments, especially the violin, and see how old they are and what they looked like,” said an 8th grade violinist.

A 12th grade student who had previously visited MIM on a field trip in the 6th grade said that they had looked forward to viewing historical instruments through a more knowledgeable perspective.

Casteel High School chamber orchestra students visited Stradivarius and the Golden Age of Violins and Guitars in December 2024.

“I remember seeing the octobasse,” they said. “But now I know a lot more, especially because we do music history every Thursday, and it’s cool because I really know what these things are now.”

In the special exhibition, the students examined the instruments and watched videos featuring virtuosic musicians such as Rachel Barton Pine and Nancy Zhou. They enjoyed comparing the shapes, materials, and construction methods of bows from different time periods.

The students were fascinated by the exhibition’s 1776 mute violin by Nicolò Gagliano, which was made without a soundbox so that players could practice quietly. The students were also delighted by the pocket-sized, violin-like pochettes on display, and several said that they wanted to play one themselves.

At the end of the group’s special exhibition tour, Matthew Zeller, curator for Europe, stopped by the Target Gallery to speak with the group.

“It was fun to discuss music history with a new generation of string musicians,” Zeller said. “I’m thrilled that the orchestra visited MIM to learn about masterpieces by some of Europe’s most renowned and influential makers.”

Afterward, Choin and the orchestra members took a teacher-guided tour through the Geographic Galleries. In the Experience Gallery, the students tried out instruments from around the world, including the theremin, African mbira thumb piano, and Latin American arpa harps.

“I really liked seeing all the instruments from so many countries and how beautiful and unique each and every one of them is,” said a 12th grade violinist. “It’s so inspiring.” ▪

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: BRYAN AND KELLIE RICHARDS

Producer’s Circle members support a favorite artist’s concert at the MIM Music Theater

Guests and members might recognize sergeant Bryan Richards of the Phoenix Police Department, who has provided offduty security at MIM’s Guest Service desk for eight years. Bryan and his wife, Kellie, are also live music lovers and frequent guests at MIM Music Theater concerts. From his experience working MIM’s Concert Series Premiere events, where members can buy tickets in advance of the public, Bryan knows how quickly popular concerts can sell out. In 2024, he and Kellie joined MIM’s Producer’s Circle to secure early access to concert tickets.

In addition to early ticket access, Producer’s Circle members receive, among other benefits, the opportunity to support a concert of their choice. When Bryan saw the MIM Music Theater’s Fall 2024 Concert Series lineup, one name caught his eye: ’80s pop star Debbie Gibson. Bryan and Kellie had seen Gibson in concert in the 1990s, and he was impressed to learn how Gibson’s career had flourished, building on her pop hits to perform on Broadway.

“Debbie Gibson is a real entertainer,” Bryan says.

though, they sat near the front—and they were thrilled when Gibson descended from the stage and walked down their row as she sang. At a VIP meet and greet after the show, the singer personally thanked Bryan and Kellie for supporting her concert.

“She was very genuine, very charming,” Bryan says.

Supporting a concert at the MIM Music Theater “was an unforgettable experience,” Bryan says. “Kellie and I are looking forward to the Summer 2025 Concert Series, and we’re excited to support another great artist this year.”

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: JANET SHEPHERD

MIM’s Legacy Circle is an “investment in life”

Volunteer team member Janet Shepherd has been enamored with MIM since before the museum opened, so joining MIM’s Legacy Circle was an easy decision.

“MIM is a world-class institution,” she says. “Not only a national treasure, but I think an international treasure.”

MIM’s Legacy Circle honors people who have included gifts to MIM in their wills, trusts, retirement plans, or life insurance policies.

Joining MIM’s Legacy Circle with a planned gift helps members like Janet support MIM’s mission and ensure the museum’s continuing impact.

“Music is just such a core, integral part of life,” Janet says. “MIM encompasses history, geography, art, literature, poetry, anthropology—the whole gamut.”

Janet learned of MIM in 2009, when she noticed a sign on the corner of Mayo and Tatum Boulevards that read “Future Home of the Musical Instrument Museum.” She had always loved music, and she became more interested in the building’s unique architecture every time she passed by the construction site. In April 2010, she attended

the first concert at the MIM Music Theater and took her first tour of MIM’s galleries.

When Janet retired from her career as a speech language pathologist in 2013, she joined MIM’s volunteer team to share the power of music with guests. She admires the museum’s varied, all-ages programming and is inspired by MIM’s mission of fostering appreciation for the cultures of the world.

“When you walk through the doors of MIM, you experience a place of discovery, positive energy, and pure joy,” she says.

In 2021, Janet joined MIM’s Legacy Circle to help sustain the museum’s uplifting impact on people from around the world.

“For me, it’s an honor and a privilege to be able to leave a legacy to MIM,” Janet says. “The programs, the offerings—it’s just an investment in life.” ▪
