The MIM Music Theater welcomed iconic trumpeter and composer Chris Botti for three live performances on October 14 and 15, 2021. Botti has four number one jazz albums and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album, and has recorded and performed with music’s brightest stars, including Barbra Streisand, Yo-Yo Ma, Lady Gaga, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, Frank Sinatra, and many more. Producer’s Circle members David and Karen Divine, who supported the concert, were among the guests at the first sold-out performance, and they invited several trumpet students to enjoy Botti’s performance. LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear MIM Friends and Supporters, In this Annual Report edition of Quarter Notes, we are delighted to share some notable accomplishments from 2021 that contributed to the positive impact MIM is making in our community, thanks to your sustained and generous support. If you recently returned for a visit to explore the galleries, you probably noticed some exciting changes as we refresh content and tell new stories celebrating music in all forms. The Artist Gallery features some of the world’s most important artists and innovators, representing musical icons across various nations and cultures that have reached the pinnacle of their craft. The latest additions to this popular gallery, highlighted on page 6, will introduce you to several international masters whose artistry and instruments have greatly enriched our musical heritage. During your time at MIM, you might also have enjoyed a light lunch at Café Allegro or an afternoon treat at Beats Coffee Bar SM. On page 16, you can read more about the exciting global cuisine and family-friendly options that executive chef James Moran has crafted for guests. Moran believes music and food are best as a shared experience—and we hope you’ll agree. The MIM Music Theater presented spectacular performers throughout our Fall Concert Series, including the masterful trumpeter Chris Botti. Longtime Producer’s Circle members Karen and David Divine, profiled on page 52, not only sponsored the show, but they invited several student trumpet players from Rosie’s House along, hoping to inspire and encourage them to continue learning their chosen instruments. VOLUNTEER TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Experiencing the power of MIM’s new special exhibition alongside guests Our volunteer team members are passionate about MIM and music, and they are always excited to experience new things at the museum. We asked a few of them to share their first impressions of Treasures: Legendary Musical Instruments.

How have guests reacted to the exhibition? “A real joy is to watch an older and younger person (perhaps parent and child) walk in and spend an hour viewing, exploring, and discussing the various exhibit pieces together! One family had four children—three of whom played the violin, and they were enamored with the instruments by Amati. One gentleman played the trumpet and loved the Conn instruments. Another guest played the guitar and thought the inlay on the special ukulele made for the exhibit was the most beautiful he had ever seen!”

How has your experience been volunteering at the Target Gallery? “I have enjoyed the Target Gallery assignment. My favorite instruments in Treasures are the gilded Erard piano and the early guitar with string frets. Many new and returning guests are bringing friends and relatives to see this exhibition. I have not encountered any disappointed guests—I receive many positive comments as they leave!” Joyce Larson

What was it like to be part of MIM’s special exhibition? “It was a great honor and very flattering to be asked to play the Erard piano in the monitor footage in the Target Gallery. While playing this beautiful, historic instrument, I could not help but think about who else had their fingers on these keys over 120-plus years. I absolutely love the new Treasures exhibition. The curators and the design team did a terrific job in assembling and displaying these precious objects.” Jeff Burch 33

THE MUSICIANS AND MAKERS BEHIND THE TREASURES MIM’s special exhibition showcases the personal legacies that have shaped music The 80 objects on display in Treasures: Legendary Musical Instruments are more than the instruments played by influential musicians, and more than just the stunning work of great instrument makers. They tell stories of musical development and global performance traditions, and they let guests glimpse into the lives of the people who created and played them.

Andrea Amati

In the 16th century, Andrea Amati established the violin form still used by luthiers today. Amati owned the earliest recorded workshop in Cremona, and he is also credited with formalizing the Cremonese construction method, in which the sides of the violin are shaped around an internal form. The family luthiery tradition continued into the 17th century with Andrea’s sons Girolamo and Antonio, then Girolamo’s son Nicolò, who is regarded as one of the greatest violin makers in history. Approximately 20 instruments made by Andrea Amati exist today, and MIM is honored to have two on display in our special exhibition. Loan courtesy of National Music Museum

Innovative jazz saxophonist Eric Dolphy rose to prominence in the early 1960s in groups led by Charles Mingus and John Coltrane while recording and performing as a bandleader. Played over traditional jazz song forms and harmonies, Dolphy’s expressive solos were famously “out,” fusing elements of bebop, free jazz, and more, with notes sometimes harmonically distant from chords and making idiosyncratic interval leaps. Unlike many jazz musicians at the time, Dolphy was also well-versed in the bass clarinet and flute, and he helped legitimize their regular inclusion in the genre. Although he died at 36 in 1964, Dolphy still inspires today’s jazz musicians to push musical boundaries. This Selmer Super Balanced Action alto saxophone, made in 1949, was Eric Dolphy’s primary saxophone until 1963.

The Pride of Hawaii Samuel Kamaka Sr.

Samuel Kamaka Sr. started building instruments under his own name in 1916 and established a shop in Honolulu, Hawaii. After the worldwide success of his patented signature Pineapple model ukulele in the late 1920s, he trained his young sons to continue the craft of ukulele-making. Kamaka Sr. died in 1953 after a 40year career in instrument production, and his devoted family has carried on his legacy. Today, four generations later, Kamaka Hawaii, Inc., is still owned and operated by the Kamaka family, and they remain synonymous with the finest Hawaiian-made ukuleles and continue to elevate the art form of ukulele-making. A Master of the Electric Guitar

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix is indisputably among the greatest musicians ever to plug in an electric guitar. As a left-handed guitarist, he famously played a restrung, upside down, right-handed Stratocaster. The guitar on display in Treasures, however, is a left-handed guitar, one of only three left-handed Black Widows ever produced by Acoustic. Hendrix used this instrument during recording sessions in late October 1968, when he was at the height of his fame. Just days earlier, he had released his final studio album, Electric Ladyland, which conquered the pop music charts, becoming the number one album in the United States in November. INTERNATIONAL MASTERS EXHIBIT ADDED TO ARTIST GALLERY New display highlights seven global musicians The ever-changing exhibits in the Artist Gallery celebrate the greatest artists in the world—artists such as Elvis Presley®, Roberta Flack, and world-renowned sitār virtuoso Ravi Shankar. Many guests step inside the gallery hoping to find their favorite famous musician, but the new International Masters display aims to share the stories of celebrated artists that many guests might not be aware of. The new display brings four of the gallery’s international artists and three newly added artists into one exhibit that emphasizes their This kayagŭm (zither) was passed down to Yi Jiyoung from kayagŭm master Hwang Byung-ki.

This doira has been owned and played by three Uzbek doira legends—Usta Olim Komilov, Toʼychi Inogomov, and Abbos Kosimov. prestige and skill. Ukulele star Jake Shimabukuro is also featured in the display; guests may recognize him from performances at the MIM Music Theater or from his one-of-a-kind Kumu model ukulele (page 5) on display in Treasures: Legendary Musical Instruments. The showcased artists have surpassed mastery of their

instruments and genres to create techniques and music of their own design, becoming symbols of pride for the countries and musical practices they represent. As new additions to MIM’s Artist Gallery, Kosimov, Yi, and Almeida embody the definition of an international master. Uzbek music and doira ambassador Kosimov is known for his innovative playing techniques and rhythmic mastery, which have added new dimensions to the doira’s sonic capacity, and for his versatility in adapting the doira to various genres and international influences. Recognized for her artistic interpretations of traditional kayagŭm music, Yi has pioneered a contemporary kayagŭm performance style. Her numerous accolades include being named an official master of South Korea’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage for kayagŭm sanjo (folk solos on kayagŭm) and byeongchang (folk songs accompanied by kayagŭm). “Both Kosimov and Yi have not only a great interpretation of traditional styles of playing but also have established an iconic playing style of their respective instruments,” says Eddie Chia-Hao Hsu, PhD, MIM’s curator for Asia and Oceania. A prolific composer and performer, Almeida debuted in the late 1940s with pianist

On the face of this guitar, Almeida collected signatures of famous American actors and musicians, including Bette Davis, Bing Crosby, Rita Hayworth, and Bob Hope. Stan Kenton’s band. In addition to earning five Grammy Awards, he is credited on nearly 800 Hollywood studio recordings, dozens of film scores, and some of the earliest fusions of jazz and Brazilian music. “We hope the International Masters display opens doors for guests to recognize music from other countries and provides new opportunities to discover global master musicians,” says Manuel Jordán, PhD, chief curator. ▪

THINKING GLOBALLY, COOKING LOCALLY James Moran brings a passion for international cuisine to Café Allegro When Café Allegro reopened in November 2021, it had a new executive chef: James Moran. Moran developed his love of cooking in his mom’s kitchen while growing up in New York. Moran watched her make traditional French dishes like coquilles Saint-Jacques, classic American comfort food like chicken noodle soup, and an array of foods from around the world. He worked in delis and restaurants as a teenager; after attending culinary school, he worked across Manhattan in nearly every culinary setting known to the modern chef and later managed kitchens and planned menus in Arizona, New York, and Japan. Moran eventually returned to Arizona, where he rebranded and planned nearly all the current menu at PV Pie and Wine. But he 16

was drawn to MIM because of his love of music—whether it’s blues, classical, metal, or whatever he’s in the mood for. “Music is like food,” Moran says. “There are different times for different music. In the same way you may be emotionally drawn to listening to a certain genre while you drive, you may crave comfort food at a specific time in your life.” Coming from the melting pot of New York and having worked in kitchens and visited friends around the world, Moran is familiar with many different cooking styles, including Italian, French, Latin, and Asian. “Walking home down the streets of New York, you can smell curry coming from one house, Asian flavors from another, and the scent of

And Moran is also looking at the new year through an environmentally conscious lens, using sustainable packaging, straws, and ingredients in the café. Above all, he is dedicated to providing a culinary experience that reflects the diverse cultures throughout the museum.

With Café Allegro’s menu, Moran hopes to present MIM guests with a continuation of their global experience in the galleries. But sourcing ingredients locally has always been a staple at Café Allegro, and Moran is extremely conscious of every step of the process—how far ingredients travel, the vendors the café works with, and who packages the food. Local considerations are always being made, right down to the Purely Sedona spring water in the refrigerated grab-and-go cases at Beats Coffee Bar SM. “Eating local is not just a catchphrase,” Moran says. “You have to always keep that perspective in mind.” In 2022, Moran aims to uphold Café Allegro’s mission to serve globally inspired dishes

CREATING VISIBILITY FOR WORLDWIDE CULTURES AT SIGNATURE EVENTS MIM collaborates with local cultural organizations In October 2021, world-renowned musician Ken Koshio led a unique performance of Japanese taiko drumming during the Experience Japan Signature Event. “People were so entranced,” public programs manager Sierra Ochoa says. “They could hear the taiko from inside El Río, and their jaws would drop as they walked out to the courtyard to see the amazing performance.” Koshio is one of many artists that have been recognized and celebrated by one of MIM’s Community Partners. Our public programs team collaborates with well-known and beloved cultural organizations across the greater Phoenix area to create events that foster an appreciation of diverse cultures. 18

“Our Community Partners tell us which artists, activities, and aspects of the culture are special to their communities,” Ochoa says. “This helps us plan performances and activities that best represent the culture.” Whether they are deeply immersed in the community or are culture-bearers themselves, partners suggest artists and activities that honor or uphold their cultural traditions. Over the past decade, MIM has worked with nearly 50 community partners, such as the African Association of Arizona, the Asociación Cultural Española de Arizona, the Great Canadian Picnic, and Casa Brazil. On the day of their event, partners maintain an important presence by hosting an informational community booth in El Río.

During Experience Japan 2021, for example, artists who work with the Japanese Friendship Garden created beautiful pieces of calligraphy for guests, and anyone interested in exploring the culture further could learn more about the organization. MIM is excited to present a lineup of immersive experiences in 2022 that includes events honoring musical icons and celebrating the world’s diverse music and cultures. Celebrate Local, Experience France, and the annual holiday favorite ’Tis the Season: Holidays at MIM will return. Experience Mexico, last enjoyed in 2013, will go beyond mariachi and other well-known Mexican musical styles to highlight the rich array of Mexican musical traditions and celebrate MIM’s robust collection of objects from Mexico. Inspired by the success of 2019’s Experience Polynesia, Celebrate Music from Hawaii will feature ukulele workshops, live performances,

and family-friendly activities that illustrate the diversity of the Aloha State. Chloe Tengan, MIM’s programs coordinator, is especially excited for this new event, which honors her culture. “It is a privilege to be able to share some of the musical traditions of my home,” Tengan says. “E komo mai (welcome)!” ▪

MIM’S JUNIOR MUSEUM GUIDES PROGRAM RETURNS IN-PERSON Program deepens students’ connection to MIM In August 2021, MIM educators welcomed students back to the museum’s engaging MIMkids Junior Museum Guides program.

the museum and be creative,” says Katherine Palmer, DMA, MIM’s curator of education. “They can develop academically and personally while building their relationship with MIM and the arts.” Junior Museum Guides finish the program more firmly connected to music, the world, and the community. “Music isnʼt just a piece of my life; it is my life,” says one 10th grader. “I feel an emotional connection with the songs I listen to, dance to, or sing. I donʼt know what I would be without music.”

Junior Museum Guides lead a group tour through MIM’s Asia Gallery at Experience India in 2021. During the program, students in grades 6 through 12 meet one afternoon each week for four to five weeks, building public speaking and presentation skills, making music together, developing content for gallery tours, and delving into the music of the world. “The Junior Museum Guides program helped me learn a lot more about music and how it fits into our history and culture,” says one 7th grade participant. “Plus, it was really fun.” During the weekly sessions, students prepare to lead MIM guests through tours and musicmaking workshops during a Signature Event. They hone their public speaking skills by learning about body language and projecting their voices. Although some students are nervous about presenting, MIM educators notice them becoming more confident over the course of the program. “The program aims to provide tweens and teens with an opportunity to have a voice in 20

TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: KAYLA TRUSK MIM’s donor relations associate ensures members feel the power of their support MIM members may recognize donor relations associate Kayla Trusk as the friendly face greeting them at events like concert series previews and the Founder’s Reception. She is the MIM team member answering questions and addressing concerns on the Circle of Friends phone line, and she has her hand in almost every membership communication and event. Growing up around Chicago, Kayla discovered her love for museums through frequent visits to the Field Museum and the Shedd Aquarium. Her passion for art led her to engage with museums creatively—she would sketch the details of the artifacts and exhibits she saw on display. She didn’t consider a career in museum work, though, until she took anthropology classes while studying in the biological/pre-medical illustration program at Iowa State University. Her degree 50

and artistic talents landed her an exhibit design internship at the Field Museum. Kayla’s MIM journey began at the front desk in 2018 as a guest service lead. Having worked in retail, as a university tour guide, and as a college admissions counselor, Kayla relished face-to-face customer interactions with MIM guests. As a guest service lead, she looked for ways to improve processes, prepare the team for guest inquiries, and make sure every member felt appreciated. In 2020, Kayla spearheaded the initiative to check in with members when the museum was closed because of the pandemic. For weeks, the guest service team called members to tell them about recent acquisitions, thank them for their continued support, and share encouraging words.

After the museum reopened in August 2020, MIM executive director April Salomon and strategic data specialist Megan Bevill noticed Kayla’s determination to serve MIM guests and invited her to join larger memberrelated projects. After a few months, she was brought onto the Institutional Advancement team full-time. “My favorite things about working at MIM are the pure beauty and quality of MIM’s collection and seeing how our donors’ support brings the benefits of music to both the local community and guests from across the globe,” Kayla says. As donor relations associate, Kayla starts every day with the same goal: create a positive, memorable experience for every guest.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: DAVID AND KAREN DIVINE Donors inspire students through live music at the MIM Music Theater When iconic trumpeter Chris Botti took the MIM Music Theater’s stage on October 14, 2021, all 300 seats were filled with eager guests. Among them were Producer’s Circle members David and Karen Divine and several trumpet-playing students from Rosie’s House,

David and Karen grew up playing instruments in school bands and passed their musical appreciation on to their children through violin and piano lessons. They continue their lifelong love of music through their generous support of the MIM Music Theater and their willingness to share with children studying music the experience of seeing performances by artists of various cultures and genres. “Karen and I both hope that bringing the kids to MIM will change their lives and inspire them to work hard at learning their instruments,” David says. ▪
