Advancement Toward Sustainability

MISSION STATEMENT The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) enriches our world by collecting, preserving, and making accessible an astonishing variety of musical instruments and performance videos from every country in the world. MIM offers guests a welcoming and fun experience, incomparable interactive technology, dynamic programming, and exceptional musical performances. MIM fosters appreciation of the world’s diverse cultures by showing how we innovate, adapt, and learn from each other to create music—the language of the soul.

The students featured on the cover are part of a “Musical Menagerie” field trip from Granada Primary School in Phoenix. They spent the morning building their knowledge of Asian material culture and used their “detective eyes” to compare textures, colors, shapes, and how musical instruments make sounds. The students also enjoyed hands-on time playing instruments in the Encore Gallery and took part in a musical story based on a folktale from Southeast Asia.

Rated Phoenix’s #1 attraction and ranked in the top 20 museums in the United States.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear MIM Friends and Supporters, At the beginning of 2017, we envisioned a year of continued progress toward our organizational goals, as well as the completion of several important initiatives. With your ongoing support of MIM’s mission and the generous contributions you provided, that vision became a reality. As you will see in this year’s annual report, MIM’s impact on our community is remarkable and you are helping to make it happen. Our increasing school tour participants greatly benefit from the unique educational experiences we offer through music. Already a field trip destination in the Valley, MIM’s dedicated new gallery focused on STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math—enriches and expands these important concepts for schoolchildren. Furthering our commitment to STEM programming, we added a new Signature Event called “Discover Science at MIM,” which was held on January 20–21 and included activities and performances centered around science, technology, and music. Over the next several years, MIM will be able to support additional educational programs, as well as school and youth tours, thanks to our first multiyear grant from the Molly Blank Fund. Highlighted in this issue, you’ll read about the foundation’s important work, along with its sustained generosity toward MIM. Without our dedicated and enthusiastic corps of more than four hundred volunteer team members, much of the work we do at MIM would not be possible. In January, MIM hosted its first Docent Exchange welcoming more than 140 attendees from the Desert Botanical Garden, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Heard Museum. The half-day program included an introduction to MIM by senior leadership, sharing of best practices, guided tours of the galleries, and an opportunity to see our sensational special exhibition on ancient musical instruments from China. We have even more exciting new programs and performances planned this year and look forward to welcoming new guests and familiar faces to MIM for an unforgettable experience. Thank you for continuing this incredible journey with us and believing, as we do, in the power of music as the sustaining human gift. On behalf of the entire team, thank you for your support of MIM!

GLEN CAMPBELL HONORED IN ARTIST GALLERY One of the first musicians to fuse country and pop

MIM is proud to share the life and legacy of country music legend Glen Campbell, who passed away last August after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Over a six-decade career, Campbell was admired by countless artists for bridging the gap between country and pop music. Songs such as “Rhinestone Cowboy,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” and “Gentle on My Mind” remain classics and showcase his sincere singing voice. “Glen always thought of himself as a guitar player first and foremost; to have an exhibit at the MIM would have meant the world to him,” says Kim Campbell, Glen’s wife of thirty-four years. An important highlight of the display is the 1968 prototype of Campbell’s own signature Ovation acoustic guitar. He used it on his weekly television program, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, bringing country music to a wider mainstream audience. After his diagnosis with Alzheimer’s, Campbell continued to perform and to raise new public awareness of the disease. A full stage wardrobe and the black Ovation guitar used during his Farewell Tour can also be seen, along with his Highland bagpipes, which he used for years to perform "Amazing Grace" in concert, to show his Scottish ancestry. “Glen Campbell enjoyed such connection with audiences, so it is appropriate that we portray important aspects of both his musical legacy and personal life,” says Richard Walter, PhD, MIM’s curator for United States / Canada and Europe. All instruments and artifacts featured are on loan courtesy of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee, which inducted Campbell in 2005. ▪

NEW EXHIBITS HIGHLIGHT FAMOUS MUSIC CITIES IN THE UNITED STATES Discover musical identities of Memphis, LA, and more As you explore MIM’s galleries, you’ll notice that most are organized geographically. For example, in Latin America you can learn all about music from Colombia at an exhibit dedicated to that country, and in Asia you can discover instruments from Vietnam. In the United States / Canada Gallery, the exhibits are instead organized by themes such as distinctive musical genres (Country, Polka, Hip Hop) or by instrument types (Amplified Guitars, Brass Trumpets). While they encompass a vast musical landscape, many individual cities in the United States have special identities based on their musical histories. Some of these

stories can be explored at a series of new exhibits highlighting famous music cities across America. As told by Richard Walter, PhD, MIM’s curator for United States / Canada and Europe: The initial selection of four cities installed at the beginning of 2018—Memphis, Tennessee; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Los Angeles, California; and Elkhart, Indiana—will cover some important musical themes that have not yet been addressed in the United States / Canada Gallery. Memphis has been a significant city on the Mississippi River for generations, where the American melting pot has been unusually

active and rich with ingredients of diverse people, professions, and entertainment. It is both “the home of the blues” and “the birthplace of rock and roll,” to say nothing of its contributions to jug band and Southern soul music. The instruments and video reflect all those traditions, helping to emphasize the unusual legacy of this special musical city. The nation’s first capital, Philadelphia, has an undeniable place in American history as well as a deep musical history. For instance, the new display features an outstanding keyed bugle like the one played by Francis Johnson, the first African American professional bandleader and composer. Dramatic parade suits from the annual Philadelphia Mummers Parade are exhibited along with the instrument played by the principal tuba player of the Philadelphia Orchestra when it recorded the original soundtrack for Walt Disney’s Fantasia in 1939! A centerpiece of the Los Angeles section will be the story of the famous, loosely knit collective of session artists called the Wrecking Crew, whose members recorded hundreds of the most recognizable hits, such as Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Water,” and theme songs for television productions, including M*A*S*H and Mission Impossible, beginning in the 1960s. Core members Tommy Tedesco (guitar) and Hal Blaine (drums) are among

the most recorded musicians ever, and we’ll have instruments from both to anchor an exhibit that also illustrates Chicano music and the emergence of country-rock. Elkhart, Indiana, notably became the world’s largest manufacturer of band instruments, but it also played a central role in fostering community and school bands across the nation. Taking advantage of recent donations and highlights in MIM’s permanent collection, we have an opportunity to illustrate the unique history and scale of instrument production by C. G. Conn, Beuscher, Martin, and several other brands— all based in Elkhart. Each of these cities has a distinctive musical identity, but they combine nicely to celebrate things like soul and classical music, popular hits and movie soundtracks that millions of us have heard, school bands that so many have experienced, and spectacular parades. In coming years, we may plan to use this gallery space to feature more cities, but it is exciting to watch a major transformation in the United States / Canada Gallery now and share some brand-new musical stories at MIM. ▪

As conservator, Correa examines, documents, repairs, and maintains musical instruments and other objects in MIM’s collection.

MIM WELCOMES NEW CONSERVATOR Examining, documenting, and maintaining the collection With a collection of more than 13,600 musical instruments and artifacts from around the world that is continually growing, conservation efforts are very important at MIM. Conservation work helps maintain and document the collection as well as preserve instruments and artifacts that might otherwise be lost to history.

(Left) Repairs are made to the lower wooden block and rib of a violin.

MIM is eager to continue those efforts by welcoming its new conservator, Rodrigo Correa-Salas. Born in Santiago, Chile, Correa comes from a family that celebrates music and the arts, as many relatives are artists themselves. His older brother is a painter and sculptor; another brother is a pianist and orchestra conductor; his mother was a ballerina and Spanish dancer; and his grandfather was a renowned violinist and orchestra conductor.

6

(Right) The front cover is glued back on a cello after adjusting the sound post.

Prior to MIM, Correa worked as a luthier, instrument conservator, cellist, and music educator for nearly two decades in the United States, Puerto Rico, Chile, and Panama. For fourteen years, he was the curator and custodian of Maestro Casals’s violoncello at the Pablo Casals Museum, and he was also the official luthier of the annual Casals Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Casals’s same violoncello is currently on display in MIM’s Artist Gallery. “It’s nice to be back with the instrument I helped maintain and conserve for many years,” says Correa. “It’s like seeing a good friend again.”

through a large window, providing guests with a behind-the-scenes glimpse of collection maintenance and preservation. To give guests a more detailed view of conservation efforts, Correa brought his work even closer to the window. Set up as a workshop, the space showcases Correa’s projects in action as well as his process of conserving instruments and artifacts. “I am really happy and excited to be here. People are proud to be a part of MIM,” says Correa. “The team members and volunteer team members are amazing. I hope that my work contributes to maintaining the quality of this great and beautiful museum.” ▪

Correa graduated from the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico with a bachelor’s degree in music education and a minor in violoncello performance. He later received an associate of science degree in string instrument technology from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, while also studying the cello. Throughout his life, Correa has played in various orchestras as well as with baroque, classical, and popular music groups in the United States and the Caribbean. In addition to his extensive background as a luthier and conservator, Correa’s experience as a musician brings a unique perspective when caring for instruments.

Correa plays Maestro Casals’s violoncell0.

“I love music and architecture, and my work lets me combine both,” says Correa. “My goal in life is to make music.” Correa works primarily in MIM’s Conservation Lab, which can be viewed

ZOUK / SOCA EXHIBIT EXPLORES VIBRANT POPULAR MUSIC Antillean bands fuse local sounds with technology Beginning in the 1980s, a popular music revolution swept through the Lesser Antilles, as illustrated in the Latin America Gallery’s new exhibit “Zouk/Soca: The Lesser Antilles.” Innovative bands began to merge local island sounds with international styles and new MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) technology. While most of the content in the Latin America Gallery emphasizes traditional music and the historical roots of popular genres, the Zouk/Soca exhibit is a tribute to the cosmopolitan spirit and cultural influence of popular Antillean bands in the last few decades. Artists from the Lesser Antilles created these contemporary sounds from digital synthesizers, samplers and percussion sequencers, electric guitar and bass, brass section, and acoustic drums. Several examples can be seen and heard at the Zouk/Soca exhibit. Some display highlights include a first edition model of an Akai music workstation, which combines digital audio sampling, MIDI sequencing, and percussion pads; a Roland keytar that uses MIDI signals to activate sound from a synthesizer; and a keyboard rack featuring a 1980s vintage Roland digital synthesizer.

element of musical sound, including pitch, volume, rhythm, timbre, and more. While the musical genres of compas, calypso, soca, and dancehall originated in the larger islands of Haiti, Trinidad, and Jamaica, musicians and audiences throughout the smaller Antillean islands helped fuel their continued evolution and popularity. “Prolific bands like Kassav’ are cultural heroes in the French Antilles,” says Daniel Piper, PhD, MIM’s curator for Latin America and the Caribbean. “In the world of music, they literally put the region on the map and succeeded in expressing the contemporary identity of Caribbean people who are as savvy to international trends as they are rooted in island culture.” ▪

MIDI technology was an important musical tool both in the studio and on stage as it transmitted digital signals for each

STEM GALLERY OFFICIALLY OPENS AT NEW SIGNATURE EVENT Guests discover science and music through hands-on programming MIM’s Signature Events typically focus on a country, region, or legendary music artist, but in January, a new Signature Event, called “Discover Science at MIM,” explored topics of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and music. Focusing on these subjects allows guests to discover connections between science and music that exist in their everyday lives. Many students are learning about STEM in the classroom, and “Discover Science at MIM” gave guests the opportunity to have fun while exploring these concepts together through activities such as a community music jam, an octobasse demonstration, demonstration stations about the science of sound, and more. The exciting new Signature Event also served as the grand opening of MIM’s new STEM Gallery, an innovative space that explores the scientific concepts inherent in music. The impulse to innovate is innate and continually impacts how we consume and appreciate music. Guests observe how scientific and technological

advancements are offering new ways to create and enjoy music. Changes in earphone styles and types is one example of such innovation. While this allows for music to be enjoyed from anywhere, listening to music at high-volume levels can damage hearing. Experts from the Dangerous Decibels® program, who helped create original content for the STEM Gallery, discussed the importance of hearing safety for lifelong music appreciation. As science and other STEM subjects become increasingly important to education today, MIM’s Education and Public Programs Department will continue to offer professional development sessions for educators focused on STEM and music and will also highlight several artists in the Artist Residency Program who use music to open kids’ minds to STEM learning. “MIM is a dynamic environment and we want to remain a great resource for educators and a source of engaging STEM content for all our guests,” says Brian Dredla, MIM’s director of education and public programs. ▪

EDUCATORS BRING MUSIC TO THE CLASSROOM Professional development classes empower local teachers

Early childhood educators explore bilateral arm movement through scarves. At a time when arts education is often overlooked in schools, MIM is working with educators in the community to help share music and the arts with more students. Throughout the year, MIM offers professional development sessions to help educators understand how the museum can be used as a resource and to share educational materials that teachers can use and adapt in their own curriculums. The sessions focus on three major themes: 1. Early Childhood Education “Build Early Skills through Music” 2. Social Studies “Create a Global Classroom” 3. Science, Technology, Engineering & Math “STEM: How Science Brings Music to Life” While “Build Early Skills through Music” is intended for educators working with very young students, both “Create a Global Classroom” and “STEM: How Science Brings Music to Life” are offered for those teaching grades 3–12.

During the sessions, educators engage in a variety of activities that promote a hands-on, artsintegrated approach to learning. In addition, participants work with members of MIM’s Education Department to create lesson plans to bring back to the classroom, earn professional development hours, and explore MIM’s galleries as they further develop lessons and plan for field trips.

“We are helping build a community of learners,” says Katherine Palmer, DMA, MIM’s curator of education. “MIM is uniquely poised to build cultural awareness in the classroom.”

Through professional development sessions, MIM hopes to arm teachers with content they feel empowered to bring to the classroom or use during a field trip at the museum. “I never thought of music being related to STEM, but it is!” says an elementary schoolteacher who recently participated in the “STEM: How Science Brings Music to Life” session. “The students at our school will love this. I feel you have opened my eyes to a new idea and I can’t wait to learn and teach it!” MIM’s professional development classes are supported by the Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation and Elaine F. Stepanek Foundation. Preregistration is required at MIM.org. ▪

MIM’S EDUCATIONAL IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY Fostering an appreciation of music and culture

Janet Bedor-Bernell, museum guide, teaches students about the music and culture of Burma during a school tour.

Kids love music. They grow up singing and dancing along to it with friends at school and listening to songs on their favorite TV shows at home. MIM’s field trip program enhances that awareness of music by showing students its deeper connections to the world around them. While exploring MIM’s galleries on school tours, children learn about traditional music and dances from Africa, discover the science of sound, strike a gong just like one they see in the Asia Gallery, and so much more. Through these experiences, students develop an appreciation for diverse cultures as well as an increased understanding of the skill and imagination needed to build and play musical instruments. “A field trip to MIM is often just a starting point,” says Brian Dredla, MIM’s director 16

of education and public programs. “With everything a student can experience at MIM, learning can easily continue in the classroom after the students return to school.” In fact, many educators create class projects that use a MIM field trip and resources developed by MIM’s education team as launching pads for greater discovery and understanding. Every two-hour field trip includes an orientation video, free-choice learning, and a visit to a hands-on gallery. The field trip program also includes options for an African drumming and dance workshop or a live musical performance in the MIM Music Theater as part of the Artist Residency Program.

has welcomed more than three hundred thousand participants.

Students join the band Run Boy Run on stage during an Artist Residency Program. MIM offers a variety of field trips tailored to Arizona state standards in different subject areas. MIM expanded its most popular field trip when it opened the STEM Gallery, an innovative space that explores connections between music and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. After visiting the gallery, educators and students leave thinking about music in new and thoughtprovoking ways. MIM plans to continue building upon these important concepts throughout the museum. “The hands-on, up-close approach to education [at MIM] is unparalleled at both stimulating motivation and creating concrete understanding of material,” says Christopher Windes, a fourth-grade teacher at Pioneer Elementary School who visited MIM on a STEM field trip. In 2017, MIM welcomed nearly seventy thousand school and youth tour participants, the largest number ever in a single year, and since opening in 2010, the museum

The growth of MIM’s field trip program underscores the desire of many teachers and school districts to find ways of using the arts to connect with other subjects. MIM recently joined the Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education program, which helps arts organizations throughout the United States to develop educational partnerships with local schools. MIM is working alongside several school districts and arts organizations to increase arts-integrated learning opportunities for Arizona students. “A visit to MIM really highlights to students that music is something that connects us all. Students realize that there are people all over the world who share their passion for music,” says Dredla. Through its field trips and other educational programming, MIM hopes to foster a deeper appreciation for music, scienc, and the arts and to continue making a positive impact on the community. ▪

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: KID KOALA A live puppet show, concert, and film all in one In February 2018, the MIM Music Theater welcomed renowned Montreal-based scratch DJ, composer, and music producer Kid Koala for an enchanting adaptation of his graphic novel Nufonia Must Fall. Directed by K. K. Barrett, who was Oscar-nominated for Her and a longtime production designer for director Spike Jonze, this revolutionary multidisciplinary performance was brought to life in real time with a mix of puppetry and video projection along with scores on piano, strings, and turntables by Kid Koala and the dynamic Afiara Quartet. Nufonia Must Fall shares the magical story of a lonely robot who tries to woo a workaholic girl with his love songs. Inspired as much by silent films as by comic books, this unique adaptation is a live puppet show featuring forty-seven puppets and twenty different sets, a concert, and a film all in one. The MIM Music Theater is passionate about showcasing a variety of genres, giving guests the opportunity to experience sounds from all over the world. Nufonia Must Fall offers an experience unlike any other. The audience not only witnesses all aspects of the show’s production in real time, such as scoring, filming, moving sets, and acting, but also sees the final creation. Kid Koala has collaborated with the bands Gorillaz and Deltron 3030 and has toured with artists including Radiohead, the Beastie Boys, Arcade Fire, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. In addition, he has contributed to film scores for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Great Gatsby, and Baby Driver, whose album was nominated for the 2018 Grammy Awards. He has also composed music for the National Film Board of Canada, the Cartoon Network, Sesame Street, and Adult Swim. “In addition to its unique qualities, Nufonia Must Fall is an experience that bridges the gap between pure technology and pure aesthetics,” says Patrick Murphy, DMA, MIM’s theater manager. “The show is equal parts fascinating and fun, marrying technology and the arts into a show that is simply wonderful and engaging.” ▪

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S PICKS Artistic director Lowell Pickett shares his spring concert picks We are bringing an extraordinary range of musical talent to the MIM Music Theater this spring—from a Persian tar and setar master to a rising British blues star, and from a young band celebrating the Gullah tradition of the Georgia/Carolina Sea Islands to a musician who was part of one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Following are just a handful of these concerts for which we hope you will join us during our Spring 2018 Concert Series! ARTURO SANDOVAL Friday, March 23 | 7:00 & 9:00 p.m. This dazzling, technically flawless trumpet virtuoso has won ten Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards, and one Emmy Award since leaving Cuba in 1990. And in 2013, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest U.S. award that can be given to a civilian. SAHBA MOTALLEBI WITH NAGHMEH FARAHMAND: A NOWRUZ CELEBRATION Sunday, March 25 | 7:00 p.m. A modern virtuosa of the tar and setar will celebrate the Persian New Year with Persian percussionist Naghmeh Farahmand. Montallebi’s searing virtuosity has drawn comparisons to Western rock guitarists, and her performances have been called exhilarating and transcendent. ANDY SUMMERS Tuesday, March 27 | 7:00 p.m. The lead guitar player of the Police, Summers helped define the group as a new kind of power trio with his creative use of jazz and reggae forms in rock and roll. Rolling Stone named him one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. LINDI ORTEGA Sunday, April 1 | 7:00 p.m. An award-winning Canadian singer, she has a country-noir style blended with a voice that feels akin to Emmylou Harris or Dolly Parton. Ortega has just the right touch of twang and tremolo as she mines the backroads and honkytonks of heartbreak. THE SUN DOG TWINS Featuring Will Clipman and Leon Littlebird Wednesday, April 11 | 7:00 p.m. A mountain troubadour and a desert drummer come together to tell the stories and sing the songs of the peoples and landscapes of the Southwest—a beautiful celebration of culture. 19

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: THE MOLLY BLANK FUND Thank you for sharing the arts with our community

educational field trips and MIMkids Mini Music Makers, the museum’s early childhood music-and-movement courses designed for children aged 0–5. “Molly lived a full life and loved to teach kids,” says Michael. “It’s nice to share that part of her with the children who visit MIM.” The grant will allow MIM to welcome more than nineteen thousand students from Arizona’s Title I schools with high concentrations of lowincome students and at-risk youth for field trips, as well as three thousand students from kindergarten through second-grade for the Artist Residency Program by the end of the 2019– 2020 school year.

“The arts are often underfunded in schools Michael and Carmella Blank of the Molly Blank Fund today,” says Carmella Blank, Michael’s wife Molly Blank was a philanthropist, an who also plays an active role in the family’s artist, a source of inspiration for her philanthropy. “Coming to MIM is great multigenerational family, and so much more. exposure for children to see the world and Above all, she believed in the importance of learn about music, geography, and cultural giving back and making a difference in the differences.” community—values she fostered in her sons, Michael and Arthur Blank, at an early age. After she passed away at the age of ninetynine in 2015, the Molly Blank Fund was established to continue supporting causes important to her. Today, the Molly Blank Fund focuses its investments on programs and organizations that support at-risk youth, Jewish causes emphasizing social justice and interfaith coalitions, and the arts and culture.

Through their contribution to MIM, Michael and Carmella look forward to seeing the positive impact of music and the arts on young lives. Both believe strategic giving to local charitable causes results in greater and more immediate impact. “You only pass through life once, so make it count,” Molly once said. ▪

MIM is deeply grateful to the Molly Blank Fund for its generous three-year grant, which supports “A World of Musical Journeys” 25

NEW VOLUNTEER TEAM MEMBERS REFLECT ON 2017 Thank you to all VTMs for your dedication and support From Guest Service to MIM’s galleries, through the hallways and beyond, volunteer team members (VTMs) impact nearly every area of the museum. In 2017 alone, VTMs served more than fiftyfour thousand hours. MIM is deeply grateful for their unwavering dedication and support in creating a welcoming and fun guest experience, sharing MIM’s mission, and helping foster an appreciation for the diverse musical cultures of the world. The MIM volunteer team currently boasts more than four hundred members. VTMs join the team throughout the year, and ninety-two passionate community members dedicated their time and talents as new VTMs this past year.

26

All VTMs bring diverse, interesting backgrounds and experiences to MIM and continually learn from one another. Karl Kasowski, a recently retired probation officer and music therapist, joined the volunteer team as an Experience Gallery and museum guide in August 2017 with the hope to continue learning while giving back to the community. “MIM is a class-act institution,” says Kasowski. “So far, my experience has been fun, fascinating, challenging, and interesting. It’s a great opportunity to be creative.” His favorite part about volunteering at MIM so far has been the educational component, as he is always learning something new on his own and from other VTMs and team members.

Chuck and Madeleine welcome guests to the galleries and answer their questions as gallery guides. Both have enjoyed their experiences as VTMs and especially like meeting new people and seeing how excited children are when they have the chance to play instruments like the ones on display in the Experience and Encore Galleries.

VTM Kasowski leads students through the STEM Gallery, teaching them about connections between science and music. Through volunteering at MIM, Kasowksi was thrilled to have the chance to learn about the museum’s new special exhibition, Ancient Musical Treasures from Central China: Harmony of the Ancients from the Henan Museum, and to share the extraordinary instruments and artworks on display with guests.

“I love meeting people from all over the world and seeing how music truly touches all people,” says Chuck. “With MIM’s diverse guests, you can see that music is for everyone; it’s a common theme among us.” MIM is always eager to welcome new, passionate VTMs to its ever-growing team of community members who volunteer in a multitude of ways. To learn more about MIM’s volunteer opportunities, e-mail volunteer@MIM.org or visit MIM.org. ▪

Husband and wife Chuck and Madeleine Jackson, who also became VTMs in 2017, first saw the MIM building off the highway one day, decided to visit, were amazed by the museum, and enthusiastically signed up to volunteer. “Museums can be intimidating, but you don’t feel that way at MIM,” says Madeleine. “MIM is interactive and friendly, and the team here is extremely helpful.”

ADVANCEMENT TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY Supporting MIM for future generations SUSTAINABLE MODEL Because of the generous transitional support of its founder and other community-minded individuals, MIM is able to advance toward long-term fiscal health and sustainability. MIM’s goal is to achieve a self-sustaining model with 60%–65% of its annual operating budget coming from earned income, 30% from contributed income, and 5%–10% from the endowment. Each year since opening in 2010, MIM has made significant strides toward that model. ENDOWMENT FUNDS A healthy endowment ensures that the programs and exhibits that distinguish MIM will thrive for generations. The following donations helped to underwrite exhibitions, acquisitions, staff, educational programs, and events.

“MIM’s goal is not only to look at current-year operations, but to focus on building an economic model and strong infrastructure for our future.” —Craig Culy, MIM’s Controller General Operating Endowment Fund Uta Behrens Fund Edward J.
