Leonora on 15 years Mim-pi is 15! We can hardly believe how time has flown. It’s been a dream, a fairy tale, and a party. It's been hard work. Luckily Mim-pi has a loyal and devoted team in all the corners of the world - from the Netherlands to India and from Portugal to America. The Mim-pi team is everywhere. Always smiling, always helpful, always looking for beauty in everything. Leonora sits down to reflect on the past and look into the future: When you started Mim-pi, what were your dreams? ‘I wanted to travel the world with my eyes and mind wide open, looking for inspiration and beautiful fabrics for my first collections.’ And now that your dream came true, what do you still wish for Mim-pi? ‘I’d love to see Mim-pi grow into a global brand. That it is sold all over the world.’
Mim-pi is 15! We kunnen het bijna niet geloven. Wat vliegt de tijd. De afgelopen jaren waren een droom, een sprookje, een feestje. Het was hard werken, gelukkig met een loyaal en betrokken team in de verre hoeken van de wereld – van ons kikkerlandje tot India en van Portugal tot Amerika. Het Mim-pi team zit overal. Altijd vriendelijk, altijd behulpzaam en altijd op zoek naar de schoonheid in alles. Leonora gaat er voor zitten om op het verleden terug te kijken en een blik in de toekomst te werpen. Toen je aan Mim-pi begon, waar droomde je van? ‘Ik wilde door de wereld reizen met open ogen en open geest, op zoek naar inspiratie en de allermooiste stoffen voor mijn eerste collecties.’ En nu deze droom werkelijkheid is, wat wens je nog voor Mim-pi? ‘Ik zou zo graag willen dat Mim-pi overal ter wereld wordt verkocht.’
You love your work deeply and passionately. What else do you love? ‘My two beautiful teenage kids - who love to keep me on my toes and often test my patience :-), my labradoodle dog LouLou and fresh tomato soup.’
Je houdt ontzettend van je werk. Waarvan hou je nog meer? ‘Mijn twee lieve kinderen, die me scherp houden met typisch pubergedrag ;-), mijn labradoodle LouLou en verse tomatensoep.’
We all want to know: What was your favourite collection? ‘For me it was Winter 2008. I had many black and white pieces. And we photographed the collection with lots of cute dogs on set.’
Onze brandende vraag: Wat was jouw favoriete collectie? ‘Ik vond Winter 2008 een top collectie. Veel zwart en wit. En tijdens de foto shoot hadden we heel veel hondjes op de set. Snoezig!’
And what can you tell us about the future? ‘That Mim-pi will remain Mim-pi in unique designs with handmade details of high quality. And that we’ll keep going to Ibiza to shoot our summer collections. What a blast! And what a beautiful island.’
En wat kun je ons verklappen over de toekomst? ‘Dat Mim-pi altijd eigen zal blijven met veel handwerk, unieke designs en topkwaliteit. En dat we elke zomercollectie op Ibiza gaan fotograferen. Wat een feest en wat een mooi eiland.’

We created these applications for that extra Mim-pi detail on some of our Party dresses.There are 5 different styles. Look closely; some of the wings are shaped like hearts. Mooi hè? They opened their doors in 2013 with a strong vision on home and garden design. Originally from Holland, Marion Schelling and Gerald van Binsbergen moved to Ibiza with their kids and immediately felt at home. Their natural and timeless style is what defines Bisc. Old materials are used to make new pieces and Marion is always looking for beautiful handmade products to add to her showroom. Mim-pi used Bisc’s fake flowers for the Flowerbomb

Bisc opende haar deuren in 2013 met een sterke visie op design voor huis en tuin. Aan het roer staan Marion Schelling en Gerald van Binsbergen die met hun kinderen van Nederland naar Ibiza verhuisden en zich daar meteen thuis voelden. Een natuurlijke
en tijdloze stijl is waar Bisc om bekend staat. Oude materialen worden gebruikt voor nieuwe creaties en Marion is altijd op zoek naar mooie handgemaakte producten om in haar showroom uit te stallen. So happy and so festive! A fabric design created by the two talented ladies from Paper Salad in the UK (page 52) used for a line of special Mim-pi dresses.
Leonora: ‘Mijn trouwe klanten weten dat allang natuurlijk. Maar het blijft ontzettend leuk om ze te verrassen met een mooi nieuw design voor het label en prijskaartje.’ En voor diegenen die het niet wisten, bewaar er eentje van elk seizoen, dan heb je over een paar jaar een leuke verzameling.

Who: Annemarie en Ramon - a couple in love with unstoppable drive and energy. Always passionate, creative and full of fresh ideas. Two kids (Xavier and Mimi), a dog and a team of great people who they like to call their family. What he says: ‘The outcome of passion is a hell of a lot of love. And you can feel it.’ What she says: ‘Live your own life. No one else can do it for you.’

Gare du Nord The rooms are pretty and tasteful, the atmosphere genuine and intimate, the food local and organic. At Gare du Nord, a B&B in an authentic village in North Ibiza, the vibe is laid-back and family-like. ‘Our personal touch is everything’, says Annemarie, owner and interior designer of Gare du Nord. ‘Our guests receive the complete Ibiza experience. We take care of everything.’ A personal touch and incredible costumer service is the foundation of all ventures that Ramon and Annemarie built together. ‘And our ‘just do it’ attitude’, adds Annemarie. ‘If we believe in an idea, we go for it. And while we’re working it all out, the rest falls into place.’ That is exactly how their car rental company Ducks United, specializing in cute and classic Ducks (Citroen 2CV) and robust and tough Land Rover Defenders, grew into so much more than just a car rental. ‘We built an experience around it, complete with always up-to-date maps, tours, dinners and drinks.’ The ‘Duck Dinners’ are a popular event on the Island. ‘I love organizing events, and Duck Dinners are my favourite. Duck Drivers are such great, often likeminded people. I always look forward to sharing good conversation and tasty food with our clients.’ The idea to open their own Bed & breakfast with restaurant and bar sprouted from these Duck Dinners. And again, the couple’s inexhaustible energy and drive got them started. ‘We found the perfect building fairly quickly. And after that it was all about creativity and execution.’ Full force ahead it was indeed. Annemarie started with the interior design of the rooms and common areas. ‘I love beautiful things. I found gorgeous antique cabinets from France. I collected amazing mirrors from local markets. I made headboards out of old doors and mixed antiques with vintage sixties style.’ For Ramon is was all about food. Originally trained as a chef, he picked up his old passion with ease. ‘I wanted to do a menu del chef: Something unique, fresh and delicious every night. De kamers zijn smaakvol en mooi, de sfeer is oprecht en intiem, het eten is eerlijk en biologisch. Bij Gare du Nord, een B&B in een authentiek dorpje in het Noorden van Ibiza, voel je je relaxed en op je gemak. ‘Onze persoonlijke touch is zó belangrijk’, zegt Annemarie, eigenaar en interieur designer van Gare de Nord. ‘Wij geven onze gasten de complete Ibiza-ervaring. Wij zorgen voor alles.’ Aandacht voor detail en goede klantenservice zijn de basis van de ondernemingen van Annemarie en Ramon. ‘En onze just do it instelling’, voegt Annemarie toe. ‘Als wij in een idee geloven, gaan we ervoor. Want juist dan - als je bezig bent - valt de rest vanzelf op zijn plaats.’ Neem Ducks United, hun autoverhuurbedrijf waar je leuke Eendjes of stoere Land Rovers kunt huren om het eiland mee rond te toeren. Dat heeft zich ontpopt tot zoveel meer dan slechts autohuur. Het is een ervaring. Compleet met up-to-date kaarten van het eiland, drankjes en diners die Duck Dinners heten. Hun eigen Bed & Breakfast met restaurant en bar kwam voort uit Ramon en Annemarie’s onstuitbare energie en drive. ‘We vonden het pand al vlug, en daarna was het heel veel creatief denken en doen.’ Het was inderdaad volle kracht vooruit. Annemarie begon met het interieur en vond antieke kastjes uit Frankrijk en prachtige spiegels op de markt. ‘Ik mixte antiek met een vintage jaren ’60 stijl.’ Ramon heeft al net zoveel passie, maar dan voor koken. Als chef de cuisine bedenkt hij heerlijke gerechten, steeds weer iets anders. ‘Ik wil elke dag een menu del chef creëren: elke avond unieke, verse, lekkere gerechten. Het is een enorme uitdaging, maar juist dat geeft mij energie!’

Artistic entrepreneurs Claire and Karen from Paper Salad joined forces ten years ago. Their fun, colourful and quirky greeting cards are made with found paper, paints, pencils and ink. Claire: ‘Mim-pi’s Leonora turned our designs into the most fabulous fabric for a collection of adorable dresses. We are so, so proud. It marks Paper Salad’s 10th birthday perfectly.’ Since Mim-pi and Paper Salad are sharing a birthday this year, we asked: Glitter or confetti? ‘Glitter!!!’ How would you describe your best party outfit? ‘A dress or tutu covered in pompoms with really sparkly heels.’ Where is your favourite party location? ‘A big field with tables piled high with cake, vases with flowers and bunting hanging from the trees.’ What is your favourite party cake: ‘Scrumptious lemon cake with bucketfulls of butter cream.’ If you’re planning a surprise party for me you should know that... ‘We love cupcakes, glitter and the colour pink!’ My next party is: ‘Our 10th birthday! We’re thinking giant balloons with tassels, Paper Salad houses and heaps of colour.’ Glitter of confetti: ‘Glitter!!!’ Wat is je ideale party outfit? ‘Een fantastische jurk of tutu met pompons en glinsterende hakken.‘ Waar is jouw ideale feestlocatie? ‘Ergens middenin een groot veld met tafels vol taart en vazen gevuld met bloemen. En heel veel slingers aan de bomen.’ Welke taart vind jij het allerlekkerst? ‘Citroentaart met kannen vol botercrème.’ Als je voor ons een surprise party organiseert moet je weten dat… ‘Wij dol zijn op cup cakes, glitter en roze.’ Ons volgende feestje is: ‘Ons tienjarig bestaan. Popjes Art For Mim-pi’s 15th anniversary, Popjes Art made photographs of vintage dolls and sheep for a special Mim-pi T-shirt collection. The very pretty result is a reason to celebrate, so we asked Karen Saaman from Popjes Art how she feels about parties: Glitter or confetti? Neither! But a Flowerrain from Blossum (www.blossum.com) would be so very glamorous and whimsical. How did you celebrate your own 15th birthday? ‘That happened to be my first ‘real’ party. I took all my friends upstairs where I had transformed the room into a lounge, with lots of pillows and cushions. We played records and ate crackers with egg salad. It was fantastic.’ What is your ideal birthday party? ‘For my birthday I prefer something quiet and understated. Just me and my honey. Somewhere in a great city where it’s sunny and warm, in a really good restaurant.’ Cake or cupcakes? ‘Cake please. Huge, enormous slices of cake!’ My next party will be...‘A doll party.’ Glitter of confetti? ‘Geen van beide! Maar mij maak je heel blij met een Flowerrain van Blossum! If there was ever a success story that is so natural, so organic and so true to the people in it, it has to be the story of World Family Ibiza. Their story started with love, took many twists and turns and is far from over, but the common themes are simple: caring for the earth, preserving authenticity and bonding as a family.
World Family Ibiza
The Madre of World Family Ibiza is Merel, a Dutch native who flourished in a time when she moved to Ibiza and lived in a teepee with her young family. Being one with the earth under her feet and the four elements that surrounded her, she felt energized, awake and inspired. She traveled to faraway places and brought back beautiful, exotic objects with traditional intricate designs, which she sold on the beaches of Ibiza. Not long after that she started designing her own collections of handbags, and much later her own clothing line. Often inspired by shapes and forms taken from nature. Often with flowers. Mim-pi spoke with Merel and we wanted to know: What do flowers mean to you? ‘Everything! A flower, or the image of a flower makes me happy. I paint flowers on my designs, I use them as embroideries, I sew them on a piece of clothing, on a handbag, even on a shoe.’ Why do you use flowers in most of your designs? ‘Flowers is what drives me. I love that flowers grow all over the world in any culture and throughout history. It’s a universal symbol.’ If you could name yourself after a flower, what would it be? ‘I love the name Oleander.’ Wat beteken bloemen voor jou? ‘Bloemen betekenen alles voor mij. Ik beschilder alles met bloemen en naai heel veel met bloemen. Bloemen maken me altijd gelukkig.’ Waarom gebruik je ze veel in je designs? ‘Omdat dat nou eenmaal is wat me begeesterd en omdat ik hoop dat iedereen er net zo blij van wordt als ik. Het mooie van bloemen is dat ze overal ter wereld groeien en dus in alle culturen voorkomen in zowel stoffen, borduursels, motieven en andere designs.’ Als je jezelf de naam van een bloem zou kunnen geven, welke kies je dan? ‘Oleander! Sometimes artists fall into their passion by a stroke of luck. Saskia van der Valk, flower artist, is one of them: ‘I started as a set designer for theatre, but a visit to an organic florist made me change my mind. ’Saskia assembles, arranges and positions ordinary flowers in a fresh way. Delicately wild and playfully down-to-earth. Vlinder & Vogel is the name of her design studio. Flower-loving Mim-pi got curious and asked: You choose local and organic flowers. Why? ‘It’s much better for the environment. Plus, I am fascinated by the way flowers grow naturally. A stem might be a bit angled from the wind or the sun. That’s beauty.’ If you could name yourself after a flower it would be: ‘I love the Echinacea plant. It has a strong, happylooking flower. It’s a healing plant. Good for the bees and the butterflies. I have a deep connection with this flower.’ Describe your favorite kind of bouquet: ‘I go for light, spatial, fresh, herby and exuberant with dill, different grass types, celery flowers, scabiosa, bergamot and papaver bulbs.’ If we pick a wild bouquet of flowers we should always remember to… ‘Pick them while being in the moment and mindful, go for that pure enjoyment.’

Jij kiest altijd voor biologische bloemen uit de buurt. Waarom? ‘Dat is veel beter voor mens en natuur. En het is ook mooi, die natuurlijke groei. Als de stelen een beetje scheef staan door de wind of zon. Dát is schoonheid.’ Als je jezelf naar een bloem zou mogen vernoemen, welke is dat dan? ‘Ik kies Echinacea oftewel rode zonnehoed. Het is een vrolijke sterke bloem. Het is een heilzame, geneeskrachtige plant. Heel goed voor vlinders en bijen. Wat wil je nog meer?’ Omschrijf jouw favoriete soort boeket: ‘Ik ga voor licht, ruim, vers, groen en kruidig. Het mag best uitbundig met dille, verschillende grassoortjes, schermbloemen, scabiosa, bergamot en een papaver bol.’ De volgende keer dat we een mooi boeket bij elkaar plukken, moeten we vooral… ‘…Niet vergeten in het moment te zijn. Peacocks Our love for the Peacock Chair started in 1976 with this Julio Iglesias album jacket. As soon as you sit down in the chair you strike a pose and you feel proud. The chair never left our thoughts and now it’s back in style. We left for Ibiza and interviewed 10 Spanish beauties in their favourite Mim-pi summer outfit in a peacock chair. Peacock If the Peacock Chair could speak it would tell the world just one thing: ‘Notice me!’ And truly so, anyone who sits down in a Peacock Chair commands all the attention. First, you feel like royalty, as if it is a throne. Then comes a sense of glamour and grace. Your chin lifts just so. Your head tilts ever so slightly. Without realizing it - even when there are no cameras around - you never just sit in a Peacock Chair, you pose.
Many photographers have noticed this phenomenon. And that’s probably why the most noteworthy of Hollywood Royalty were photographed in an elaborate wicker or rattan version of the chair. From Marilyn Monroe and Zsa Zsa Gabor to Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor - these divas have been captured like peacocks in their seat. The shape of the chair most likely originated in the Philippines and was first highlighted in America at an expo in Philadelphia in 1876. Asian design was very much in vogue and the material (wicker or rattan) was appealing. It is light, easy to clean and durable. And because of the flexibility of wicker, it could be bent into intricate forms that were in line with Victorian design.

Bij interieur design trends is het - net als in fashion - een komen en gaan van stijlen. En wij zijn blij te melden dat de Peacock Chair weer terug is van weggeweest. De stoel was erg populair aan het begin van de 19e eeuw en daarna duikelde de stoel weer even op in de jaren ’60 en ’70. En nu is ie weer harstikke hot! De retro look van de boho-chique rotanstoel is zó MIM-PI. Wij vinden vooral de exemplaren met een nieuw likje (felgekleurde) verf en een fris kussen superleuk. En nog een voordeeltje: de stoel past in elk interieur. Peacock Chairs staan geweldig in de tuin, op je balkon of in de slaapkamer. Kijk maar op de foto’s voor onze favorieten.
De vorm van de stoel komt zeer waarschijnlijk uit de Filipijnen en maakte voor het eerst furore in Amerika tijdens een expo in Philadelphia in 1876. Aziatisch design was destijds zeer in trek en het materiaal (riet of rotan) was aanlokkelijk. Het is licht, makkelijk

The Peacock Chair came and went with the cyclical waves of interior design and fashion trends. It was hot in the early nineteenth century and then again in the sixties and seventies. And right now, we’re happy to report that the chair is back in style. The retro, boho-chic look of it is very MIM-PI. We especially like the ones with a fresh coat of (bright) paint and/or a new cushion. Another advantage: it suits any interior.
