Voorwoord van Designer/ Owner MIM-PI, Eleonora Nieuwenhuizen MIM-PI kleding rolt niet automatisch van de band, maar wordt met de hand is gemaakt. Elk jurkje bevat liefdevol handwerk, gemaakt door mensen met talent, niet door machines. Maar, zo wordt mij vaak gevraagd, waarom is MIM-PI toch zo duur? Kan er niet iets van de prijs af? En daarop is mijn antwoord steevast: ‘Nee.’ Ik werk met fabrieken en naaiateliers waar goede (werk) omstandigheden heersen. Mijn logica: wie goed doet, goed ontmoet. Al twaalf jaar werk ik met dezelfde leveranciers in India, Italië en Portugal. De fabriekswerkers krijgen een goed loon. Ik vertrouw op hun vakmanschap en zij op dat van mij. Ik bezoek de fabrieken diverse keren per jaar om er zeker van te zijn dat de omstandigheden goed blijven en dat de mensen “HAPPY” zijn. Ik probeer mensen namelijk bewust te maken van het feit dat het kan: duurzame kleding maken. MIM-PI is een eerlijk merk. Eigenlijk weet iedereen dat een jurkje van 15 euro niet op een duurzame manier gemaakt kan zijn. Voor die prijs is het milieu geschaad en zijn er mensen uitgebuit. Door eerlijke merken – zoals MIM-PI – te steunen, maak je het statement dat je achter een andere manier van werken staat. Het extra geld dat je uitgeeft aan een mooi jurkje zorgt ervoor dat wij duurzaam kunnen blijven werken. En dat voelt goed! zodat elk kledingstuk een feestje is om bij je dochter aan te trekken. I want to make people aware of the fact that it is possible: producing sustainable clothing. MIM-PI is an honest brand. Deep down, everybody knows that a 15-euro dress can hardly be made in a sustainable way. For that price, the environment likely was compromised and people were exploited. By supporting brands such as MIM-PI, you make a statement: you don’t approve of these kinds of practices. The extra money you spend on a beautiful dress ensures that brands like us can continue our ecological and sustainable production process. And that feels great! I work with garment factories and clothing manufacturers that offer good working conditions. My logic is: what goes around comes around. I have worked with the same suppliers in India and Portugal for over twelve years. Factory workers receive a good wage. I put my trust in them, and vice versa. I visit the factories more than once a year to make sure the working conditions remain optimal and the people are happy. MIM-PI clothing doesn’t roll off a conveyor belt. It is handmade. Every item has handmade details and hand-knit designs, lovingly made by people with talent, not by machines. Die leuke knuffelmuur, die we special voor dit magazine maakten, wilden we niet zomaar opruimen. In plaats daarvan gingen we op zoek naar een bijzondere plek voor deze wand. We stuitten op het Emma Kinderziekenhuis AMC, en onze knuffelmuur past perfect in de metamorfose van dit ziekenhuis. Het doel van het kinderziekenhuis is om te verbouwen, en tegelijkertijd de zorg en organisatie onder de loep te nemen. Een van de kernpunten is het verblijf in het ziekenhuis te veraangenamen. Wij van MIM-PI zijn ontzettend trots dat we onze knuffelwand in 2015 mogen schenken aan dit fantastische ziekenhuis.

We created a huggable wall for this magazine and we thought it turned out beautifully. Too beautiful to do away with it, so we searched for a special place to donate our wall of teddy bears and stuffed toys. We found the Emma Children’s Hospital in Amsterdam. Our huggable wall fits in perfectly with their metamorphosis starting this year. Their goal is to completely renovate the building, as well as their organization and care system. One of their key points is to make sure that a stay in their hospital is as comfortable and pleasant as possible. We at MIM-PI are very pleased and proud to donate our huggable wall to this fantastic hospital in 2015.

Digi prints MIM-PI werkte dit seizoen samen met de creatieve ontwerpers van Studio BLIQ. Wij vroegen ze om de typische MIM-PI figuurtjes als hertjes, kabouters en poëzie-meisjes een nieuw gezicht te geven en digitaal te printen. Dat is super leuk gelukt, vinden we zelf. Studio BLIQ combineerde handgemaakte potloodtekeningen in de computer met geschilderde achtergronden, grafische prints en foto’s. Het resultaat is hip en toch heerlijk sprookjesachtig. We are proud to announce our collaboration with new, creative designers. We asked studio BLIQ to digitally print and update the classic MIM-PI designs of little deer, gnomes and vintage girls. The results are stunning! Studio BLIQ used handmade pencil drawings combined with computerized painted backgrounds, graphic prints and photographs. The cultural centre reopened its doors last year after a huge renovation, and gained five times its original size, creating even more room for exhibitions and concerts. Kids can explore Kranenburgh in numerous fun ways. There is a scavenger hunt that leads you from painting to painting and there are special little suitcases full of fun clues and instructions. This winter we were faced with the task of choosing our must have of MIM-PI Winter 2015, but we ended up picking two! Both these designs are so fashionable. neeuwwitje logeerde bij de zeven dwergen, Hans en Grietje vonden een huisje van snoep en Roodkapje dwaalde zingend door het donkere bos voor ze bij haar grootmoeder aanklopte. Huisjes in het bos spreken tot onze verbeelding: een houten hutje verscholen onder eeuwenoude bomen, een weelderig kasteeltje op een open plek, of een geheimzinnige woning achter een gammel, maar gesloten hek. Het heeft iets sprookjesachtigs en iets spannends om in een boshuisje te slapen. Omringd door stilte en een historische stemming komen we tot rust en genieten we van elkaar.

Basic recipe from meringue girls * The meringue to sugar ratio is very easy to remember – it’s double the amount of sugar to egg whites! A medium egg white weighs 30G – so use 60G of caster sugar.

Alex Hoffler and Stacey O’Gorman are two gutsy girlfriends who work together as The Meringue Girls. They found each other – and their mutual love for meringues – while working in a restaurant in London, and the rest, as they say on their website, is history.

Terwijl je op de hoogste snelheid mixt, voeg langzaam en eetlepel voor eetlepel de hete suiker toe aan het mengsel. Blijf als de suiker is toegevoegd nog 5-7 minuten mixen. Voel het mengsel tussen je vingers. Wanneer het korrelig aanvoelt, blijf doorroeren tot alle suiker is opgenomen en het een glad, glanzend, stijf mengsel is.

Paint the inside of your piping bag with natural red food colouring. Spoon the mixture in the bag. Sprinkle the remaining pistachios over the meringues.

GREEN TEA FLAVOURED MERINGUE: Mix 1 tablespoon matcha through your basic mixture and paint the inside of your piping bag with green food colouring. Spoon the mixture in the bag.

MARY QUANT Chelsea, London. The swinging sixties. The Beatles and Twiggy. Fashion designer Mary Quant was amidst all the buzz. Pop culture was the new vogue word and ‘can do’ its catchphrase. Mary Quant and her friends were at the epic centre of the youthquake that took the world (of fashion) by a storm. ‘Fashion as we knew it is over; people wear now exactly what they feel like wearing’, was Mary’s insightful observation. And she was right. The Mother of Mod created designs that every woman wanted to wear, and most women could afford. Her designs consisted of simple lines with vibrant colours and were short! ‘Just awful’, according to Coco Chanel, but Mary fired back with another sharp remark: I love vulgarity. good taste is death, vulgarity is life. By which she meant that the people who mattered to her, who understood fashion, would jump at the new thing and would get excited. And the ‘new thing’ was Mary Quant’s miniskirt. Designed for the modern woman, who kept shouting ‘shorter!’ at each skirt Quant produced. She named the short skirts ‘Mini’, after her favourite car. Her dresses were mini too, with colour blocking or her trademark daisy motif, and they flew off the rack.

Mary went on to design not only clothes, but make-up as well, (she invented waterproof mascara!) and she designed a doll that she called Daisy. Daisy was released in England in 1973 and had the tag line: Mary Quant makes Daisy the best-dressed doll in the world. The doll came with endless sets of cutting-edge clothes such as miniskirts, gypsy dresses and shoes like go-go boots and platform sandals.

Later beperkte Mary zich niet alleen tot kleding, maar ook ondergoed en makeup (ze was uitvinder van waterproof mascara!) en ze ontwierp een pop die ze Daisy noemde. Daisy werd in 1973 in Engeland uitgebracht met als slogan: Mary Quant makes Daisy the bestdressed doll in the world. Naast de pop was er een uitgebreide collectie hippe kleding zoals minirokjes, gypsy jurken en schoenen (go-go boots en sandalen met plateauzolen) om Daisy aan te kleden.
