A Helping Hand

April is National Volunteer Month, the perfect time to give back. Meet some of the remarkable volunteers who are giving their time and talent to these local nonprofits and charities.

Sexual Assualt Awareness Month

Each year, Wisconsin reports more than 5,000 incidents of sexual assault, likely underreported.

Katie Mullenbach

Katie Mullenbach and her children are steadfast volunteers at Milwaukee Women’s Center. The Mullenbach family has provided and served meals for residents of the emergency shelter, shopped for and organized holiday gifts, and brought a sense of community and hope to every shift. “Volunteering has been an incredibly rewarding experience, made even more special by the opportunity to involve my own children. Watching young volunteers engage in acts of kindness and service is truly inspiring. It fosters empathy, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of the importance of giving back.”

Jill Dumphy

Jill Dumphy has been a dedicated volunteer with Agrace, a nonprofit community hospice that provides compassionate care to patients and families across southern Wisconsin, for nearly 10 years. Her journey with Agrace began after experiencing the exceptional end-of-life care her mother received. Inspired, Jill was driven to honor her mother’s memory by offering that same comfort and support to others. Volunteers like Jill provide companionship to Agrace hospice patients. The role can include reading aloud, sharing music, playing cards or simply being there as a caring presence.

To be a part of the end-of-life journey for so many people is humbling to me. After my visits, I come away feeling uplifted. ”

Renee Stadtler

Respiratory therapist Renee Stadtler saw first-hand the impact of Kathy’s House when it opened in 2001. Patient families who had been camping out in hospital rooms suddenly had their own home away from home. She started referring families immediately and has witnessed the impact as a volunteer for 16 years.
