Milwaukee Press Club hosts newly appointed MSP superintendent in a Q&A luncheon

The Milwaukee Press Club presented a Newsmaker Luncheon featuring recently appointed Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver on Wednesday, December 17, 2015, held at the Safe House/ Newsroom Pub.
The Milwaukee Press Club presents the Newsmaker Luncheons to shed light on issues of the day. The public was invited to attend the luncheons. Dr. Driver was interviewed by a panel of Milwaukee journalists. Driver, was appointed
superintendent of MPS effective October 1, 2014. As superintendent, Driver works with the Milwaukee Board of School Directors and district leadership to improve student achievement; engage in effective and efficient operations that make best use
of district resources; and, develop opportunities to increase parental and community involvement. Driver previously served MPS as the district’s first chief innovation officer. Prior to joining MPS, Driver served as deputy chief of empowerment schools

Milwaukee youth and police talk tactics, truth at UWM 'Dream.Plan.Act' summit Ferguson. NYC. Cleveland. Milwaukee. Relations between law enforcement and young black men are making headlines nationwide in the wake of police shootings of unarmed black men and youth. This was the backdrop of a Wednesday, December 17, 2014, conversation that brought together four UWM University Police officers and a group of young black men attending a university-sponsored summit. The four UWM police officers, who had decades of combined experience in the Milwaukee Police and Milwaukee County Sheriff ’s departments and Wisconsin State Patrol, urged the Milwaukee-area high schoolers to avoid making their own stereotypes of law enforcement, understand their rights and report negative or possibly

stances leading to the interaction. “Don’t let pride dictate the outcome,” Officer Theron Rogers said. “Get out alive and get out safe, and afterwards if you feel you’ve been treated unfairly, contact a lawyer or go to court.” Some advocates attending the session criticized the police officers for not confronting issues underlying recent incidents, like the shooting of Dontre Hamilton in a downtown Milwaukee park. UWM Officer Craig Rafferty said it was more important in the one-hour session to give the young men advice that came from the officers’ experiences as both law enforcement and as black men. “You need to know that you are us,” Officer Lamar Griffin told the students. Milwaukee Urban League honors students who ' Do The Right Thing'

On Thursday, December 11, 2014 The Milwaukee Urban League (MUL) hosted its annual "Do the Right Thing" awards ceremony at Destiny High School. The awards event acknowledges exemplary achievement and behavior in the areas of Academics, Athletics, Social Leadership, and Extracurricular Activities (such as volunteer services or special talent). This year over 400 students were honored at the ceremony. The keynote speaker was Associated Bank vice president and business intelligence manager for corporate banking and commercial real estate Clarice Young. The evening also featured a spoken word performance by Kwabena Antoine Nixon and Muhibb Dyer. Pictured at the event is MUL president and C.E.O. Ralph Hollmon (back row, center).
