ga Chapter including AKA Day of Service, Family Fun Day, Childhood Hunger, United Negro College Fund Walk/Run and numerous other service projects.

Milwaukee Brewers host 'Math Day'

On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, Greater Holy Temple Christian Academy 4th graders attended a field trip to the Milwaukee Brewers' "Math Day" at American Family Field. As part of this educational day, the students learned basic statistical principles through the game of baseball. In advance of the game, teachers were provided with a Brewers Math Day workbook to incorporate into their lesson plans leading up to the event. At the game, students put their math skills to the test by completing the workbook using elements of the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Each student received a free hot dog and bottled water while they enjoyed the game.

Metropolitan Milwaukee Alliance of Black School Educators Teacher of the Year, Bette Annette Davis said. "My philosophy is, 'I teach my scholars'.

"As a science teacher at Milwaukee Environmental Sciences Academy, my overarching goal is to engage my scholars with enthusiasm and teach them how to speak and articulate scientific data with clarity. I love STEM! (Science Technology Engineering and Math) So, let’s face it; our scholars must be able to compete as future STEM professionals. Daily, I tell my scholars they are scientifically amazing. Lastly, it is my privilege to ultimately infuse an attitude of positive scientific awareness of the amazing world of science. Also, I believe, math teaches you how…but science teaches you why?” Bette was awarded the honor on Friday, May 5, 2023, at the Wisconsin Center.

Beloit College offers a plan to help Cardinal Stritch students finish their degrees

Beloit College is helping Cardinal Stritch University students find a home and complete their college degrees after the Milwaukee institution announced it will close after the Spring 2023 semester.

Admitted students will have their out-of-pocket tuition matched and stay on track to graduate on time with transferred credit.

Beloit College connected with students at Cardinal Stritch’s general transfer fair on Friday, April 21, at the Kliebhan Conference Center.

Through a Beloit College preferred transfer option, domestic and international Cardinal Stritch students can

be ready to start classes this fall with a free, streamlined application process, said Leslie Davidson, Vice President for Enrollment.

“Our hearts go out to Cardinal Stritch students at this challenging time. We hope to make the path to finishing a degree easier for some of them,” Davidson said.

Beloit College shares Cardinal Stritch’s mission of transforming lives and communities through the practical application of the liberal arts. Both institutions empower graduates to lead fulfilling lives marked by public contribution in a diverse society.

“At Beloit, we can offer these students a challenging

academic environment, and career-readiness opportunities,” Davidson said. “Our campus is filled with students who believe in the strength of an inclusive community, engage with the world around them, and actively work to build a bright future — for themselves, their communities, and the world. We think these characteristics will resonate with Cardinal Stritch students.”

At Beloit, Cardinal Stritch students can find a small private liberal arts college, just a little over an hour's drive

away, that aligns with curriculums in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, English (creative writing and literary studies), history, mathematics, political science, psychology, sociology, studio art, theater, and more.

Two admissions counselors, one of whom is a former Cardinal Stritch advisor, will guide students in planning a future at Beloit College. Cardinal Stritch students can learn more at https://www. beloit.edu/admission/cardinal-stritch-transfer/

Being Frank

Don’t question the celebration

Recently, a question was asked during a discussion in one of the English classes I teach. A young Mexican female questioned why the school holds an annual Black History celebration. This young lady’s question pertained to the fact that the school did not do this for other ethnic groups. There were African Americans in the class who looked puzzled or down at their books. I smiled and said, “Maybe because African Americans have put up with so much feces while in the USA.” Everyone smiled and relaxed because I said this with humor. The question made me realize that many of the ethnic groups in the USA have developed a form of senility. Not only would they not be here if it weren’t for African Americans, the USA would not exist.

I see this senility in the eyes of many so-called immigrants who come to the USA. The US government courts these different races and often offers them tax breaks to come here. In some form

or fashion, these other races usually wind up doing business in the African American community. In the majority of cases these immigrants soon develop the same viewpoint of African Americans that US society as a whole has. The same people who were probably losers in their country now come to the US and look down on the people whose presence enables them to come here.

Those civil rights and the so-called equality that have become laws and semi-norms in the USA were bought and paid for with black suffering. It’s time to set these other ethnic groups straight. The

sacrifices made by African Americans are what enable your ethnic group to come to the USA.

The following question ties in with what I mean by loser. “Why would someone who is doing well in their own country leave there to come to the USA and possibly do worse?” Do you think someone who is doing well in another country is going to give that up to come here and be called ethnic slurs by whites? Listen up, you other races. Don’t think white people embrace you. You are just another layer to separate white people from African Americans; a shiny new toy to be

used in the subjugation of African Americans. Whites will pump your head up and tell you how hard working you are as you build their edifices and mow lawns. But, never believe that whites accept any other race as equal to them. The only reason these other races are in the US is because of white paranoia/fear of an African American economic base. African Americans have earned their celebrations in schools, TV, internet, etc. These celebrations were paid for in blood.

These other ethnic groups are at fault, but African Americans are truly to the blame. When the Mexican female asked that question the African American students should have answered. Many African American youth know nothing about African American history except Martin Luther King Jr. This lack of self-knowledge lies directly at the feet of African American people. African American parents need to stress Black History to their children throughout their lives. I understand that many African Americans do

not know about the Dogon people and Sirius B. Yet, these same African Americans know about the creation of rock-and-roll. African Americans should know about the Olmecs and their influence on what is now called Mexico. Just knowing about melanin can instill self pride-in African American youth. This pride can check these 'Johnny-come-lately' ethnic groups before they develop the anti Black persona the US cultivates.

Every race on the planet needs to celebrate Black History. There is no history without Black History. Black people colonized this small planet. Can you dig it?

Ethel Ivory celebrates 99th birthday

Ethel Ivory moved to Milwaukee from Corinth, MS in 1943 when she was 20-yearsold. She was a relatively early member of the Great Migration, a movement which caused a massive number of black laborers and families to move North in search of better living and working conditions in the decade during and after World War II. On May 13, 2023 Ethel celebrated her 99th birthday with a block party for her large, family both biological and adopted.

It was a very large party. During her long life, Ethel raised seven children of her own and three others as well; she ran two successful businesses; helped found a new church congregation; and provided a substantial percentage of the funding needed when it constructed a new $1.5-million facility. She has been a successful real estate investor.

“I never wanted for anything in life, but no one ever gave me anything,” she said.

In spite of this, she has given so much to so many. Soon after relocating to Milwaukee, she said she was hired by the National Enameling and Stamping Corp. (NE-

“She had a ministry,” said Racquel Ivory, one of her 13 grandchildren. “She fed the homeless and was a witness to a lot of human suffering.

to others.”

Racquel said her grandmother also for many years worked form many years with a local food pantry to make sure her neighbors did not go hungry. Racquel said Ethel continues to provide meals to a number of her immediate neighbors, many of whom dropped by on Saturday to wish Ethel happy birthday.

Ethel Ivory was also instru mental in helping to found

in 1994 with Pastor Harold D. Turner, Sr., owner and publisher of The Milwaukee her children. She also helped a number of them graduate from college. She continues

Our Daily Bread hosts 'Mother's Day Wellness Conference'

The Mother’s Day Wellness Conference on May 14, 2023 at the Lois and Tom Dolan Community Center in Brown Deer included a continental buffet, comedy routines, motivational talks, self-care, vendor booths, a raffle and a surprise visit during the fashion show from Dr. LaToya K. Williams (upper left photo), the 2022 Elite Ms. Wisconsin Earth pageant winner. The event was attended by about 50 guests and was sponsored by Our Daily Bread Community Outreach Center, Inc. It also featured several mothers whose businesses helped support the event.

Our Daily Bread (ODB) is a faith-based center established “to inspire, motivate, and guide youth, young adults and mothers in making healthy decisions.” ODB has the opportunity to share the formula for success in life and provide the tools needed to break away from unhealthy behaviors such as gangs, teen pregnancy, peer pressure, and substance abuse.

The Mother’s Day Wellness Conference included Blueprint of Fun, a 360-degree photo booth owned by sisters Tana Tyler, Tiara Cooper, and Tequila Cooper (upper right photo, from left).

Tequila said she and her sisters are trying to “have fun” with the business and did not mind working on Mother’s Day. Blueprint of Fun is available for events such as birthday parties, community gatherings, weddings and private events.

Mary Franklin and her daughter, Marijah, had three businesses featured at the Wellness Conference: Can-D Events & Designs, LLC, provided balloon sculptures, place settings and centerpiece arrangements; M.A.D. (Mother and Daughter Inspirational Covering), had a vendor booth. M.A.D. provides inspirational knowledge, experience-based conversation and other support services; and the two also helped staff another vendor booth for Chorus Community Health where Mary is a community engagement officer. In addition to these three jobs, Mary said she also has two others, another parttime job and a full-time one.

“Working on Mother’s Day feels kind of normal, I guess,” she said smiling beside her daughter.

I am a Milwaukee native who grew up in what is considered one of the worst zip codes for black families in the country-53206. I was raised in a two-parent, blended household with my mom and stepfather. Their love for real estate built financial wealth for our family with my parents eventually acquiring 22 properties and retiring in their early 50’s. I learned my love for real estate and building generational wealth from my mom’s mom who was a housewife and worked ironing clothes to create an income. My grandmother used her earrings and bought 44 acres of land in Florida. I quickly learned how real estate investing and home ownership was the engine my parents used to create financial wealth and assisting our community with provid-

ing adequate and affordable housing to low-income residents of Milwaukee.

After I grew up and began living on my own, my parents gifted me the down payment to purchase my first home. I saved so much money with my mortgage payment being way less than the rent that I had been paying; plus I was building up personal wealth through the value of the home I was buying. Eventu-

ally I used some of the equity I had built up in my home to get a loan and acquire my first investment property. At this time, I was studying at Alverno College to earn my B.A. in Business Management. I knew I wanted to take this education and follow in my parents’ footsteps by owning or operating a real estate firm. Over the years I received additional training in the areas of real estate sales, appraisal, property management, title closing and property development.

I spent years networking, connecting with local agencies, assisting with providing adequate housing in distressed neighbors of Milwaukee and assisting with combating chronic homelessness.

I assist individuals with home ownership, real estate investing, building portfolios, and most importantly, creating generational wealth. I’m passionate about teaching, consulting, coaching, and supporting our community. I grew my business through word of mouth and assisting one investor at a time in finding creative ways to acquire

real estate, achieve home ownership, obtainin the right investment properties and manage them, and creatie strategic ways to generate revenue using their properties. Now I plan on using this monthly column to connect with my community and to assist individuals over come the historic obstacles that have prevented black families from creating generational wealth through home equity.

First M³ College Connections students are becoming UWM graduates

Kayla Jackson is graduating from University Wisconsin-Milaukee (UWM) in May 2023 with a bachelor’s degree and a double major in psychology and neuroscience on the pre-med track.

Jackson is one of the first UWM graduates who benefited from the M³ College Connections program, a partnership involving UWM, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the Milwaukee Public Schools.

She credits the educational psychology course she took through that program with giving her the tools she needed to succeed in college.

“I learned the process of college and the class format. I was able to see how different high school and college were,” Jackson said. “I was better prepared to make the transition into college.”

M³ College Connections is an award-winning program that allows eligible Milwaukee Public Schools students to complete their high school graduation requirements

while earning up to 20 college credits.

Since the pilot courses started in 2019, 325 high school students have gone through the program. Currently there are 87 students in the program. The high school students take mathematics and English courses at MATC and an educational psychology class and ethnic studies class at UWM.

The educational psychology course focuses on helping high school students develop the tools they need to succeed in college. That course has expanded to help high school students select majors and figure out future careers.

“It was great to get those credits and save some tuition money,” said Jackson, who also works for UWM as a campus ambassador.

She plans to take a gap year after her May graduation to prepare for the medical school admission test and develop the personal statement needed for her application, Jackson said.

She decided to enter the medical profession and become a psychiatrist after seeing the mental health challenges her own family faced after her father died of complications of diabetes in 2020. The COVID-19 pan-

demic also had a powerful impact on mental health in her community. Her longterm goal is to serve the African American community in Milwaukee.

“I’d recommend M3 College Connections to others,” Jackson said. “I learned where to go for support, and not to be afraid to ask your teachers questions. It’s been amazing.”

Eight foods that will help improve your memory

Have you been playing the Google memory game and noticed you’re getting worse each passing day? A lot of the time, your memory can deteriorate without warning, but there is a way to fight back.

This article introduces 8 foods that can get your brain back in working order and improve your top score in those memory exercises. You may even be shocked to learn that some of your daily favorites have been helping your memory all along.

improved memory, turmeric can help with inflammation because of its antioxidants, but it can also help arthritis, liver disease, and many other ailments.

Don’t be afraid to put turmeric powder in your next dish or make a smoothie with the beneficial spice. Turmeric tea is also a popular option if you want something warm.

Coffee

Starting your day with a cup of coffee is a no-brainer. It gets your motor running early in the morning and helps you remember everything you need to do before you head into the office. Numerous studies have found that caffeine can positively impact your short- and longterm memory.

Turmeric

Turmeric is another fan favorite for those trying to live a healthy lifestyle because of its vast benefits. On top of

Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seeds are abundant during the fall season thanks to the festive activities centered around the scary fruit. It has a profound impact on memory because of the zinc and magnesium components that lie within it.

With that in mind, add a few more pumpkin seeds

to that pumpkin pie recipe during the fall get-togethers so everyone can receive the wonderful benefits.

is their first obsession. Well, luckily for them, chocolate also helps with memory and keeping your head on straight during bouts of brain fog.

Broccoli

Oh, broccoli, every small child’s worst nightmare. If only little kids knew that broccoli could help them remember why they should eat it in the first place, they’d be better off.

In all seriousness, broccoli is a part of the leafy green family, known for its ability to improve memory. This is primarily because of he lutein, vitamin K, and beta-carotene elements within the food group.

Research has shown that consuming chocolate can improve your verbal episodic memory 2 hours after you eat it. Episodic memory helps you remember events in your life, such as where you placed your keys or what you bought from the store.

Oranges

Oranges are another tasty treat that can help your brain when you can’t find your way. This is primarily because the orange fruit has citric acid, which has been found to slow memory deterioration.

These benefits are great for early-onset dementia patients who could have Alzheimer’s. So don’t be afraid to get extra orange juice in the morning because it helps you remember to feed your pet before you leave.

another reason to drink it religiously: the healing tea can boost memory.

Green tea is full of caffeine and a molecule called L-theanine, the substances responsible for giving your brain the stuff it needs. You only have to ensure it is regular green tea, not those innocent-looking green tea shots.

Eggs

Last but certainly not least on our list is eggs. Eggs have many other benefits besides improving memory, so it’s always a good idea to crack open a few and make an omelet.

Chocolate

If broccoli is a little kid’s worst nightmare, chocolate

Green tea

Who doesn’t love a cup of green tea when they feel sick or are lounging around the house? Well, now you have
