Vel Phillips receives Lifetime Achievement Unity Award from Milwaukee Urban League
On Thursday, December 4, 2014, The Milwaukee Urban League and Time Warner Cable presented the Lifetime Achievement Unity Award to Milwaukee's own civil rights icon, Vel R. Phillips. The event took place in a ceremony at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. During her outstanding career of public service, Vel achieved many "firsts." She was the first African American and the first woman elected to the City of Milwaukee Common Council, where she was a strong advocate for women and minority issues. She was the first woman and the first African American appointed as a judge in the state. In 1978, Vel made history again by being elected the first woman and first African American Secretary of State in Wisconsin. Kohl's® delivers gifts and holiday cheer to Penfield's Children's Center

Fifteen Kohl’s associates delivered truckloads of nearly 1,000 wrapped holiday gifts for children enrolled at Penfield Children’s Center on Friday, December 5, 2014. The gifts, donated by Kohl’s associates, were handed out on Saturday during Penfield’s annual holiday party. More than 90 percent of the children served by Penfield Children’s Center live at or below the federal poverty level and these gifts may be the only gifts they receive this holiday season. For the past several years, Kohl’s associates have generously purchased holiday gifts for children at Penfield Children’s Center. In ad-
dition to the gifts, Kohl’s will donate $25,000 to support programming at Penfield. Since 2000, Kohl’s and Kohl’s Cares have committed more than $8 million to Penfield Children’s Center for their mission and to create, support and expand the Kohl’s Building Blocks Program, which helps young children with behavioral problems and children with significant disabilities by providing access to specialized educational and developmental services and equipment through Penfield.
