Bader Philanthropies honor legacy of Reuben and the late Mildred Harpole with new building dedication On Tuesday, October 12, 2021, Bader Philanthropies, Inc., leaders and supporters gathered to celebrate the grand opening of its new Harambee neighborhood building at 3338 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive. The development, which houses a jazz café called Sam's Place, and Shalem Healing Inc., a health and wellness service, has been named the Harpole Building in honor of community advocates Reuben and the late Mildred Harpole (inset). The couple, known by many as the “Black Mayor and First Lady of Milwaukee," were advocates for the city’s youth and vulnerable residents, with Reuben working as an outreach specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Extension and later a program officer for the Helen Bader Foundation (now Bader Philanthropies). Mildred advocated for education and racial housing equal rights, and worked at Milwaukee Public Schools as a reading specialist and an administrator at Harambee Community School. She went on to serve as director at the Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity for the Milwaukee Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, where she advocated on issues concerning fair housing and homelessness for several years before finally retiring in 2002. She passed in 2019.

SHARP Literacy unveils 'Healing Hands' public mural in historic Bronzeville district On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, SHARP Literacy's STEAMbased educational program, partnered with several other area Milwaukee schools to create a large-scale mural entitled, "Helping Hands" which was unveiled in a special ceremony in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood, 2209 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Community Artist Vedale Hill led the public art project, which included the participation of fourth and fifth grade students from Augustine Prep, Kluge Elementary School, Rogers Street Academy and Swallow Elementary School. Hill guided the students in the painting of wooden hands in a symbolic way, focusing on elements that relate to their own communities such as support, strength and generosity. Milwaukee County Parks honor the late Guy W. Taylor

On Saturday, October 2, 2021, Debora Taylor (center), her family and the Milwaukee County Parks system honored the life of the late Guy W. Taylor. Guy was the highest ranking African American in the Milwaukee County Parks system where he retired and helped pave the way for many others. To honor his life and accomplishments his family and the Milwaukee County Parks held a special tree planting and dedication service at McGovern Park's Smith Park Pavilion, 5462 N. 33rd Street. In attendance were his family members and local dignitaries including Milwaukee County Parks Director Guy Smith (far right) and State Senator Lena Taylor who presented the family with special proclamations. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com
