BUCKS WIN IN SIX!: First Title Win Since 1971

On Tuesday, July 20, 2021, the Milwaukee Bucks beat a fifty-year slump and won the NBA Championship title in an amazing sixth game. Among the highlights Giannis Antetokounmpo ended the game with 50 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Bucks beat the Phoenix Suns 105-98 to win the series 4-2 at the Fiserv Forum. In a season played largely without fans, the Bucks had 65,000 of them packed into the Deer District outside, a wild party that figured to last deep into the Midwestern night.

Confetti rained down inside as fans chanted "Bucks in 6! Bucks in 6!" — which began as a hopeful boast by a former player turning out to be a prophetic rallying cry. The Bucks became the fifth team to win the NBA Finals after trailing 2-0 and the first to do it by winning four straight games since Miami against Dallas in 2006. Milwaukee has been waiting fifty years to celebrate a winner after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson led the Bucks to the championship in 1971.

Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes announces bid for U.S. Senate

Photos by Morgan A. Conyers

On Tuesday, July 20, 2021, Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes announced his official bid to run for the U.S. Senate at the Sherman Phoenix, 3536 W Fond Du Lac Ave. Lt. Gov. Barnes will be running for Republican Senator Ron Johnson's seat. He's vying to become the first African American from Wisconsin to serve in the Senate. Barnes, 34, is the first Black lieutenant governor in Wisconsin history. He is giving up a chance to run for a second term in 2022 as Gov. Tony Evers' running mate. Instead, Barnes becomes the seventh Democrat to enter the race, with an eighth expected to get in soon. "I'm running for the United States Senate because when things get tough, we shouldn't lower our expectations," Barnes said in a statement. "Instead of changing our dreams, we need to change the game. Hard-working Wisconsin families deserve every opportunity, but politicians like Senator Ron Johnson aren't delivering." Johnson has not said yet whether he will seek a third term, but through June he had raised more money than any of the Democratic candidates at that point. Barnes for years has said the Democratic Party must do a better job connecting with young people and people of color. Barnes was joined at the Sherman Phoenix for is official announcement by his family.

Milwaukee youth and adults show love for Harambee neighborhood On Saturday, July 17, 2021, local residents of all ages – youth, adults and neighbors – were working together to create several community-created paintings in four crosswalks along North Avenue in the Harambee community to show their love for their neighborhood and their desire for safe streets. Developed by Cross/ Words/North, a unique community-based art project that brings together student and families from nearby St. Marcus Lutheran School, neighbors living in the Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods near North Avenue and several community organizations, to create four pieces of art that embody Empowerment, Love, Unity and Diversity. Biz Markie, pioneering beatboxer and 'Just A Friend' rapper, dies at 57 Biz Markie, an American original born Marcel Theo Hall and a larger-than-life hip-hop figure, has died at the age of 57. Known widely for a career spanning back to 1986, Hall went on to become a beloved cultural figure later in life, celebrated for his spirited personality as much as his massive 1989 hit, "Just A Friend." His death was confirmed by his manager, Jenni D. Izumi. "We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time," Izumi told NPR via email. Hall had reportedly been ill for months, due to complications from diabetes, which most likely contributed to his death. Biz came of age when rap was still young; a free-for-all in terms of approach and style, an era that seemed innocent yet was wildly progressive. He was born in Harlem before moving to Long Island in his early teens. An early introduction for those outside of New York, at least on film, was best captured in the 1986 Dutch hip-hop documentary, Big Fun in the Big Town. In it, we see a tall, lanky beatboxer in a hat emblazoned with big letters spelling out "Biz

Markie." He's effusive onstage with fellow crewmate, Roxanne Shanté. They're doing exuberant back-andforth routines as the camera zooms in on Biz, showcasing the innate ease at which he can pack a party and move a crowd through his voice and natural presence. He was an early standout in the Juice Crew, a dazzling collective led by producer Marley Marl, a visionary who assembled a team so adept and rich in character it would only be rivaled in the modern age by the otherworldliness of Wu-Tang Clan. The crew, whose affiliates were mostly out of Queensbridge housing project in Queens, NY, was founded by radio DJ Mr. Magic and subsequently placed on Tyrone Williams' record label, Cold Chillin' Records. Their first release, 1984's "Roxanne's Revenge," was produced by Marley and featured a 15-year-old Roxanne Shante. The charismatic release became a hit and is largely responsible for Juice Crew's early strides. The young proto-supergroup consisted of several eventual greats — Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, MC Shan and others. They were the vanguard of their day, a formidable team who emboldened the new

school amid rap's explosive mid-'80s popularity. Each member possessed distinct traits. If Kane was the dancing playboy and G Rap the hustler, Biz was the jester, the comic relief in a crew of serious rhyme experts. Biz's first official solo album was 1988's Goin' Off, a debut produced by Marley Marl, anchored by singles that remain among his best; "Make the Music with Your Mouth, Biz," "Nobody Beats the Biz," as well as "Vapors." The Biz Never Sleeps, his sophomore effort, generated not only Markie's mostknown song, but also one of rap's most enduring, "Just A Friend." It brilliantly sampled Freddie Scott's "You Got What I Need" and became his biggest single, eventually

charting at No. 9 on Billboard. In the music video, Biz dons a powdered wig, gloriously impersonating Mozart on the piano. It was a story-rap about constant rejection, bolstered by an earworm of a chorus. Biz is pictured weeping on the cover of the 12-inch single; big frown, handkerchief and all. I Need A Haircut, the followup to Biz Never Sleeps, is largely remembered for a court decision on copyright law: Singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan sued Biz and his record label, Warner Bros., for unauthorized usage of his 1972 hit, "Alone Again (Naturally)." The result was a landmark decision that tightened sampling laws thereafter, making all future rap (and all music) releases adhere to stringent licensing rules. Copies of I Need A Haircut were pulled from store shelves, making it a disappointment, despite bright moments— chief among them "Alone Again," the song that got them in trouble and left the entire industry shook. His next release was impishly titled, All Samples Cleared! As the '90s came to an end, it was clear that Biz had been ingrained within hip-hop, but also beyond. He had admirers, including the Beastie Boys, who featured him on

three of their projects. He was sampled by the Rolling Stones on "Anybody Seen My Baby," where his vocals were added to the song's middle sequence. He also appeared on reality TV (Celebrity Fit Club) and on pop radio in songs like Len's "Beautiful Day" from 1999. Biz's final studio album, Weekend Warrior, arrived in 2003 and saw him working with producers 45 King and J-Zone, but he made the lion's share of beats. A prominent appearance by P. Diddy affirmed his ennobled status. He appeared in the movies too, playing an inter-cosmic version of himself in Men In Black II. On television, he had a recurring role on the music-centric kid's program, Yo Gabba Gabba! He also opened for Chris Rock on his No Apologies tour. There were popular t-shirts that widely sold with his face and now famous reactionary quip, "Oh Snap!" When his fandom was at an all-time high, dolls with his likeness, cereal boxes and action figures all became collectible items. Until his recent hospitalization in 2020, Biz could be online posting to social media everything from showing off pieces of his toy and record collections to spinning records in a onesie.

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

Freedom to be Over the years I have put various opinions about topics out into the world. Anyone who has been reading this column for the past ten years knows this. Many others remember the show, Being Frank where I voiced my thoughts. The latest voicing of my thoughts has come from a podcast, The Last Black Man Standing. It was while doing this latest version of Being Frank where I had an epiphany. “Frank, maybe you should just let people be who they are.” This thought both shocked and relieved me. I have always viewed the issues that African Americans face with a Black perspective. Yet, throughout the years I always understood why African Americans were so lost. Recently I was talking to a guy who was complaining about the plight of African American people. I listened and said, “Just to be able to think that something

is wrong here is a miracle. Black people have been in a foreign country, stripped of language, culture and heritage. Forced to adopt the oppressor's ways, inclinations and society. I’d say African Americans who can think are miraculous.” The guy sat back and thought then nodded his head in agreement. In the USA people are quick to judge one another. Everyone has been guilty of judging other people’s actions. I was a master of this. It is easy to point out what is wrong with others and ignore your life situation.

I won’t try to justify my actions by saying I was pointing out things to make African Americans lives better. If there is anyone who doubts this, well good for them. I will say this; over the years I had to understand that people were free to choose. I know about the creation of the maze called society by whites which guides people. What I mean by choose, is the fact people often know what they are getting into when making the choice. With the previous knowledge, how can anyone judge or say what another per-

son is doing is wrong? If someone is enjoying doing the acts they choose, who are we to say they should be doing something else? I am not talking about breaking laws and menacing others. I am talking about those who want to marry other races, or sell out. The people who only want to portray the images that media and entertainers present. For years I talked about how the entertainment industry had killed African American creativity. I was right in my viewpoint. Would I be considered right by someone who idolizes Megan Thee Stallion? Of course I could rattle off complex facts about the manipulation of the African American female to back my view. Yet, in the end what is the point? I say, “Leave people to be free to be who they choose to be.” This does not mean that I agree with the limited status of African Americans in the

USA. What it does mean is that I am fine with leaving people to their own devices and choices. I will continue to voice my opinion in this column. I enjoy writing the 500-700 words I share with the world in this column. I remember a friend used to call me, “The modern day Noah.” I won’t say it is going to rain because it has. I will say, “Since you chose to be in the downpour, enjoy the walk and sing.” Frank James IV © 2021 beingfrankwithfrank@ gmail.com The opinions expressed in this editorial are those of the writer and not of the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper or NCON Communication, its staff or management. Declaration of Independence – Week 3 The Declaration of Independence severed the 13 American colonies’ ties with Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence committee included: Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. After 86 changes to the initial draft of the document, which was drafted mostly by Thomas Jefferson; the Second Continental Congress officially adopted the final version of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.1 This month, I have used ‘independence’ as a theme and allowed persons to respond to the prompt: ‘What Do You Want to Declare Independence From?’ I received the most compelling responses. In the last installment of this series two young brothers submitted their Declarations. These Declarations ran in last year’s series. However, a few respondents mentioned the young men’s Declarations and a few of you have asked that I re-run their Declarations. These

young men’s Declarations are included below in conclusion of this series. Remember, if you’ve missed any articles in this series, feel free to view the archived digital edition at: https://milwaukeetimesnews.com/category/ digital-editions

Garden Homes neighborhood was envisioned in 1910 by Mayor Emil Seidel, and built in 1921 by Mayor Daniel Hoan. It is America’s first municipally sponsored public housing cooperative. Garden Homes was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, and the Wisconsin Historic register in 2013. Though it was built as a whites-only collaborative, Garden Homes eventually became a diverse neighborhood, populated by people who built a strong

community there. “The neighborhood is truly a special place, where neighbors look out for one another and are prideful of their homes and gardens,” Alderman Ashanti Hamilton said. Present for the celebration and groundbreaking were 30th Street Corridor Executive Director Cheryl Blue; Pastor United President Pastor Greg Lewis, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett; Garden Homes Collaborative Co-chair Chawnette Hicks; Garden Homes Collaborative Co-chair Chuqee Flether; Garden Homes Neighborhood Association Aaron McClendon; Garden Homes Facilitator Christopher Boston; Alderman Ashanti Hamilton; WHEDA CEO Joaquin Altoro; Impact Seven Vice-President Real Estate Developemnt Michael Carlson; Cinnaire President Christopher Laurent; and Garden Homes residents Joe Bova, Vicki Boston, Bernice Love, and Martha Freeman.

Anew Barbie doll modeled on tennis star Naomi Osaka has sold out just hours after it was released on Monday July 12, 2021. The new doll is part of the Barbie Role Model series and holds a Yonex tennis racket, according to a press release from toy company Mattel. Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo, born December 6, 1994)[3] is a Greek Nigerian professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Antetokounmpo began playing basketball for the youth teams of Filathlitikos in Athens. In 2011, he began playing for the club's senior team before entering the 2013 NBA draft, where he was selected 15th overall by the Bucks. Antetokounmpo's nationality, in addition to his combination of size, speed and ball-handling skills earned him the nickname "Greek Freak". He is widely considered one of the best players in the world and one of the best players of his generation. In 2016–17 he led the Bucks in all five major statistical categories and became the first player in NBA history to finish a regular season in the top 20 in all five statistics of total points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. He received the Most Improved Player award in 2017. Antetokounmpo has received five All-Star selections, including being selected as an All-Star captain in 2019 and 2020, as he led the Eastern Conference in voting in these two years. Antetokounmpo won back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player Awards in 2019 and 2020, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to win two MVPs before turning 26. Along with his MVP award, he was also named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2020, becoming only the third player after Michael Jordan (1988) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1994) to win both awards in the same season. In 2021, Antetokounmpo helped lead the Bucks to their first NBA championship since 1971, and was named Finals MVP by unanimous vote. An NCON Communications Publication

After being recruited by Scott Spinelli, he went on to play college basketball for Texas A&M University, where he started the majority of the games in his freshman year. In his sophomore season, he earned second-team All-Big 12 honors after leading the Aggies in scoring with 14.3 points per game. Middleton was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 39th overall pick of the 2012 NBA draft. He received his first All-Star selection in 2019. Jrue Randall Holiday, born June 12, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for one season with the UCLA Bruins before being selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 2009 NBA draft with the 17th overall pick. On April 3, Holiday scored a season-high 33 points on 14-of-23 shooting with seven rebounds and 11 assists in a win over the Kings. The following day, he agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Bucks, worth up to $160 million. Holiday had an option for the 2021-22 season worth $26 million. On his way to an NBA First Team All Defense selection, Holiday averaged a team-high 1.63 steals per game for the Bucks, which was fifth-best in the league. He also made multiple steals in 32 games, which was the second-most of any player in the league over the season. In Game 6 of the Conference Finals against the Atlanta Hawks, Holiday dropped 27 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists in a 118–107 win, leading the Bucks to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974. In Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Phoenix Suns, Holiday put up 27 points, 4 four rebounds, 13 assists, and a critical steal from Devin Booker late in the fourth quarter which led to an alley oop to Giannis Antetokounmpo to help the Bucks win 123–119. So this summer, honor their wanderlust by seizing yours, and read these two similarly-titled new books... First, the history: it had Nanjala Nyabola Dr. Mia Bay to start somewhere – but where? Nyabola goes to the popular places but she also travels to spots that are generally sought by adventurers. This gives readers a sense of travelogue with a hint of the unusual; her musings on the places she goes make this a book you won’t want to put down. Her observations will make you glad she took you along with her. If these don’t quite fit what you’re looking for, there are lots of other books you’ll find at your local library or bookstore.
