Senator Elizabeth Warren visits Milwaukee to support Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes in US Senate bid On Saturday, May 21, 2022, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) along with Congresswoman Gwen Moore and others came to Milwaukee for a brunch to support Wisconsin Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes in his bid to unseat U.S. Senator Ron Johnson. The “American Dream: Join Us for Brunch with Senator Elizabeth Warren and Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes” was held at Anodyne Coffee in Milwaukee's Walker's Point. Senator Warren swooped into Milwaukee to urge the Democratic supporters in attendance to vote for Lt. Gov. Barnes to push him through the Aug. 9 primary and on to a fall showdown with Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson. "We just need a progressive fighter like Mandela," Warren told more than 100 supporters packed into Anodyne Coffee. She also made a plea for Barnes' supporters to open their wallets as he faces several rivals who have poured millions into their campaigns. Warren said Barnes "is not a billionaire, and cannot just write a check to fund an idea." With two and a half months to go before the primary, the Barnes campaign has kicked into high gear.

Employ Milwaukee expands its reach, opens new resource center on city's south side Employ Milwaukee is expanding its reach. On Monday, May 23, 2022, there was a ribbon cutting for Employ Milwaukee's new satellite location on the city's south side. “Well, Employ Milwaukee does provide a lot of resources and I feel it’s going to help us as clients learn more,” said Elizabeth Deja, a local mother. For people like Deja, the new center could be a game-changer for all moms seeking opportunities in the workforce. “It helped me with housing resources, mental health resources and everything down those lines,” she said. The new location on 57th and Oklahoma puts Employ

people who need us the most were not the people coming into our doors,” said Chytania Brown, CEO of Employ Milwaukee.
“Having Employ Milwaukee here now will give us the extra boost, will give us more resume building skills, access to jobs and on-the-spot interviews,” added Melinda
Wilcox, co-director of Bellies and Babees. The new partnership comes as the nation sees an unemployment rate of about 3.6 percent. Wisconsin sits lower than that with 2.8 percent. Milwaukee County has a higher unemployment rate than both, at 4.3 percent. Employ Milwaukee said this is a reason to keep working across the community. “There’s always a story behind the numbers and when you go a little deeper, we still have those pockets of high unemployment for certain zip codes,” Brown said. This site marks Employ Milwaukee’s third community-based extension of its workforce services and they plan to create more.
Former police officer pleads guilty to manslaughter in George Floyd killing A former Minneapolis police officer pleaded guilty on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, to manslaughter in the murder of George Floyd and agreed to spend three years in state prison, officials said. Thomas Lane’s plea to a count of aiding and abetting manslaughter came a year after his former colleague Derek Chauvin, who was recorded by a bystander killing Floyd by kneeling on his neck, was convicted of murder and sentenced to more than two decades in prison. In February 2022, Lane and former officers Tou Thao and J Alexander Kueng were convicted in federal court of violating Floyd’s civil rights. Sentences have not yet been handed down for them. Lane, 39, was tentatively scheduled to be sentenced for Wednesday’s plea on September 21. He agreed to serve that 36-month punishment at the same time as the
sentence ultimately handed to him in the federal case, said a state court spokesperson, Jael McLemore. Thao, 36, and Kueng, 28, remain scheduled to go to trial in June on state charges of aiding and abetting murder as well as aiding and abetting manslaughter. Lane avoided that trial, which could take weeks, with his guilty plea, ensuring prosecutors also dismissed a charge of aiding and abetting murder. The top prosecutor in Minnesota, Keith Ellison, said he was pleased Lane had “accepted responsibility in Mr Floyd’s death. “His acknowledgment he did something wrong is an important step toward healing the wounds of the Floyd family, our community, and the nation,” Ellison said in a statement. “While accountability is not justice, this is a significant moment in this case and
a necessary resolution on our continued journey to justice.” According to McLemore, relatives of Floyd watched Lane’s five-minute plea hearing virtually, less than a week before the second anniversary of his murder.
Police confronted Floyd, who was black, on May 25, 2020, after a store clerk accused Floyd of paying for cigarettes with a fake $20 bill. As a bystander filmed, Chauvin – who is white – used his knee to pin down Floyd, who was handcuffed, by his neck and from behind for more than nine minutes. Lane, Kueng and Thao stood nearby. The video captured Lane asking Chauvin if they should roll Floyd over. Chauvin brushed off the question, and Lane relented, though he knew the position was mortally dangerous, according to records filed in court on
Wednesday, May 18. Protests calling for racial justice erupted across the US and the world, as footage of Floyd’s death went viral. The four officers were eventually arrested and charged. A federal jury found that Lane, Kueng and Thao also violated Floyd’s civil rights, by failing to provide aid as he died. Jurors also determined that Kueng and Thao failed to stop Chauvin's use of excessive force. Lane is white, Kueng is black, and Thao is Hmong American. When Floyd was murdered, Lane and Kueng were on their first week on the job.

UR HISTORY
AN EXPLORATION OF OUR LIVES AND LEGACIES
On Memorial Day, remember our most loyal and ill-treated troops Hundreds of thousands of African American men enlisted and fought for a nation that saw them as second-class citizens. They deserve our thanks.
Hundreds of thousands of African-American men enlisted and fought for a nation that saw them as second-class citizens. They deserve our thanks. While serving as a sentry with French forces in the Argonne Forest in 1918, a black American private fought off German attackers. Unfazed by his wounds, he hurled grenades until they ran out, shot his rifle until it jammed, used his rifle as a club until it broke, and finally used a bolo knife until reinforcements arrived. The French recognized Henry Johnson’s heroism with a Croix de Guerre, while the U.S. gave him the Medal of Honor — posthumously, almost 100 years later. Johnson is a part of a long African American military tradition of exceptional devotion to a country that, through its history, denied blacks their rights and discriminated against and humiliated its black soldiers. These were the men of the iconic 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War and of the Harlem Hellfighters in World War I, of the Buffalo Soldiers on the frontier and of the leg-
endary Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. They were always fighting a two-front war — against the enemy in battle and against prejudice at home. They were fighting to prove their mettle, and that they were as — or, more — American than their white countrymen. They hoped that their patriotic commitment would loosen the grip of racist repression, and they were disappointed, often cruelly so. Still, they volunteered and, when given the opportunity, fought. As one observer puts it, “African American military service is older than the United States itself.” Blacks
fought in colonial militias in the French and Indian War, and then in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 (although slavery meant they didn’t fight reliably on the American side). Whites resisted arming black men for fear of rebellions, and they were banned from the army. But it became obvious during the Civil War that they were a ready and willing extra increment of manpower that the Union couldn’t ignore. Wary of offending white opinion in the North, Lincoln took cautious steps before embracing black soldiers. He said that at the conclusion of the war “there will
be some black men who can remember that with silent tongue, and clenched teeth, and steady eye, and wellpoised bayonet, they have helped mankind on to this great consummation; while, I fear, there will be some white ones, unable to forget that, with malignant heart, and deceitful speech, they have strove to hinder it.” Roughly 180,000 black soldiers served, about 9 percent of all Union forces. The vast majority were from slave states. In joining up, they risked re-enslavement, or worse, if captured by Confederate forces. In the end, they helped smash the slave system that had held many of them in bondage shortly before their military service. Of course, the South fashioned a new system of racial repression. At the outset of World War I, W.E.B. Du Bois strongly supported black enlistment, in the hopes that the sacrifice would lead to better treatment. “Let us, while this war lasts, forget our special grievances and close our ranks shoulder to shoulder with our own white
fellow citizens,” he wrote. African Americans made up more than 200,000 of the 2-million-strong American expeditionary force. But they got more respect from French commanders, who trained and put them on the front lines, than their own commanders. And they returned home to race riots and lynchings. The dashed hopes of black soldiers throughout much of our history make their faithfulness all the more extraordinary. William Carney was born a slave in Virginia in 1840, and made it to freedom in Massachusetts. He joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment and participated in the harrowing attack on Fort Wagner in South Carolina, depicted in the film Glory. Carney took custody of the flag when the color sergeant was shot down. He held it up under heavy fire and, despite serious wounds, returned it safely to Union lines. “Boys,” he said, “the old flag never touched the ground.”

The Milwaukee Brewers' “This One’s On Me” promotion continued on Friday, May 13, 2022, with Lorenzo Cain covering the tab at an area restaurant while the Crew took on the Miami Marlins in Miami at 5:40 p.m. To support small businesses and thank the fans, players have selected their favorite restaurants and watering holes where Brewers fans typically gather and will surprise customers by covering the tab for the night. One restaurant will be selected for each of the remaining Friday away games in the 2022 season and customers will see their bill covered by a favorite Brewers player. The identity of each restaurant will remain a surprise until that evening; there will be no public announcement in advance. The player picking up the tab will be announced in advance, though. Friday’s event was brought to you by Lorenzo Cain, who picked up the tab for patrons at Milwaukee Q, 2730 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Drive.
