Milwaukee Common Council hosts '17th Annual Girls' Day at City Hall' On Tuesday, March 22, 2022 , the City of Milwaukee Common Council hosted their "17th Annual Girls' Day at City Hall." Students engaged in stimulating discussion that both empower them to became future leaders, and introduce them to a career path in public service. This year, Girls' Day returned to an in-person format. As part of the festivities The Vel R. Phillips Trailblazer Award was given to Elizabeth M. Coggs (left inset photo) and Victoria Tatum received the Girls' Day Scholarship Award (right inset photo). The event was hosted by the five women serving on the Milwaukee Common Council, the largest number in the City’s history: Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic and Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa.

American Heart Association launches new 'Check. Change. Control.' program

On Thursday, March 24, 2022, the American Heart Association and Ascension Healthcare hosted a luncheon to announce the American Heart Association's new high blood pressure management program called Check. Change. Control. (CCC) at Ebenezer Church of God in Christ, 3132 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. CCC is an evidence-based high blood pressure management program created by the American Heart Association. The
program empowers participants to take charge of their heart health by self-motoring their blood pressure. The prevalence of high blood pressure among Black people in the United States is among the highest in the world. About 55 percent of Black adults have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension or HBP. Black people also have disproportionately high rates of more severe HBP and it develops earlier in life.
St. Ann Center hosts "3rd Annual Indaba African Ball" On Saturday, February 5, 2022, St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care hosted its "3rd Annual Indba African Ball," at its Bucyrus Campus, 2450 West North Ave. The ball is a fundraiser for the Indaba band shell, a popular entertainment venue located on the Buycyrus Campus grounds and hosts various free concerts and events during the summer. The ball kicked off Black History Month cerebrations for the center and was held in St. Ann Center’s beautiful two-story atrium, showcasing African-inspired décor. Featured entertainers included Christopher’s Project and the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Steel Pan Ensemble. The event also featured African and Caribbean-flavored hors d’oeuvres by Events by Day, guests in African or Afrocentric attire, an impromptu fashion show and photo booth, and vendors selling African clothing, jewelery and decorative items.
