Halloween spirit runs high at Mill Steel! The Grand Rapids office was full of associates, and some furry friends, dressed in costume to celebrate the holiday! We also hosted the famous appetizer and dessert contests, arguably everyone's favorite part of the festivities, where the desserts far outweighed the appetizers this year. There were so many great costumes and treats that it was once again a very difficult decision for voters. A big thank you to those who competed in the contests and brought food for all to enjoy! Associate Highlight Brian McClellan, Melvindale Supervisor

What is your role here at Mill Steel?

I am a Supervisor in our Melvindale facility. I am responsible for the day to day operations of the plant. I manage the schedules, delegate daily tasks, and work with our team to make the day run as smoothly as possible. I also work with all new hires in our plant to help train them to be the best employees they can be.

What do you like best about your job? What is the biggest challenge?

The best part of my job is working side by side with my teammates, from the associates on the production floor to the fulfillment team at our headquarters office. This is also the biggest challenge, as we spend a lot of time together and we all know how to get under each other’s skin from time to time.

Where are you from and who makes up your family?

I was born in Florida but have lived most of my life in the Downriver area of Michigan. I am married to my best friend, Christie. My wife Christie and I have three boys; Tyler, Nathan and Braylen.

How do you define success and how do you measure up to your own definition?

I believe that success is based on your hard work and dedication to the job at hand. I always try to put my best effort forward at whatever task I am doing. Even if you fail a time or two, it’s okay as long as you can say you gave it your all.

What job would you be terrible at?

I would be terrible at any job that has strong smells. For instance, a garbage man comes to mind. I have a weak stomach when it comes to smells.

What are you most looking forward to in the next ten years?

Brian and his wife Christie.

All of our kids being out of the house by then. Hopefully, just one in college. I also look forward to the growth in the company and can’t wait to see where we can go from here.

We are growing day by day and that is very exciting.

If you won the lottery, what would your life look like a year after you bring home the winnings?

It would depend on how much I won. If it was millions, I would retire somewhere in the mountains. I would buy a big log cabin home with plenty of land.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be an architect. I have always wanted to design and build houses. I used to build homes before I started with this company, and I enjoyed it a lot, but I never had the chance to design any.

Name: Dylan Janisse Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Quality Dylan is from Zeeland, MI, where he currently resides. He enjoys working on his Jeep, working out, backpacking, skiing, hanging out with friends, and spending time with his pudgy cat, Charlotte. He plans on buying a house in the Grand Rapids area in the spring, so his commute isn’t quite as far every day. He’d also like to build a Jeep some day to drive on the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. One interesting fact about Dylan is that he typically drinks a gallon of green tea every day at work.

TECH TIPS with the IT Department: Cyber Security Checklist We are constantly reminded of the importance of being vigilant in this age of cyber security attacks. Mill Steel takes corporate cyber security very seriously and encourages associates to be just as vigilant in their personal cyber usage. Here are a few tips: 1. Do not click on email attachments or links, even from friends and family, that you are not expecting.

When in doubt – call; do not email for validation.

2. Secure all of your passwords. Obtain LastPass or something similar to store and maintain your passwords.

3. Make sure your passwords are unique and are at least 9 characters long (numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and special characters).

4. Have anti-malware on at least your home computer and any Android smartphones.

5. Keep the operating systems of your devices (Windows, iOS, MAC OS) up to date.

6. Secure your home Wi-Fi network. a. Do not use vendor provided passwords (i.e. Comcast). b. Networks should not have obvious names (i.e. SmithFamilyNetwork). c. If possible, make complex Wi-Fi network passwords.

7. Update your privacy settings for common websites. Here are some helpful links to learn more about how to do so on each of these popular sites: a. Google - https://safety.google/security/ b. Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/help/325807937506242 c. Instagram - https://help.instagram.com/196883487377501 d. LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/92055/understanding-your-privacysettings?lang=en 8. Do not share your passwords. This is especially true in response to any email.

9. Do not use untrusted systems, especially to go to password protected websites. This means using an unsecure computer or Internet connection.

10. Limit your use of public Wi-Fi. This is especially true for websites with financial information.

11. Do not provide unsolicited or unnecessary personal identification information online or offline. Remain vigilant of your social security information.

12. Acknowledge that something is off early (anomalies) and fix it – instead of hiding in embarrassment or pride.

13. Use two-factor authentication whenever possible.

Elmarie Justice Williams Congratulations to James and Wemkia Williams on the birth of their baby girl, Elmarie Justice Williams! She was born on October 2, 2019 at 1:42 pm. She weighed in at 7 lbs. 6 oz. and was 19” long. Mom and baby are doing great. Elmarie has an 11-year-old big sister named Jaleia. The family is adjusting well to their new daily routine. Congratulations to you all and welcome to the Mill Steel Family, Elmarie!

Nadira Kathleen Gagnon Please join us in welcoming Nadira Kathleen to the Mill Steel Family! She was born July 29, 2019, weighing 8 lbs. 10 oz., and measuring 20.5" long. Nick and Lindsey Gagnon brought her home on July 30th. Her three older brothers Henrik, Leo, and Titus are big fans. The adoption is anticipated to be finalized late February or early March 2020.

Happy Retirement to Bob Lewis!

During the October Luncheon, we celebrated a very special retirement.

It was the last company luncheon for Bob Lewis as he retired from Mill Steel this month with 47 years under his belt! What an accomplishment and honor to have such a devoted associate, something genuinely worth celebrating. Here are a few photos from the celebration and Bob clocking out on his last day at Mill Steel, a moment that his teammates said was a little emotional. Congratulations on your retirement, Bob! “Bob is an inspiration to me. For 47 years, Bob has continued to show up and give 100% each and every day. To wake up put your feet on the ground, put one foot in front of the other, and believe in Mill Steel each day is the true inspiration. I’m proud to have worked with Bob for the last 10 years and I wish him a happy and healthy retirement. Bob, thank you for your service and for always helping Mill Steel become a better place.”

Contest Corner

This month’s Contest Corner featured an office favorite, Pumpkin Putt-Putt. A variety of obstacles and an unpredictable putting surface left Mill Steelers flummoxed through the early goings. Putt after putt meandered towards the hole falling everywhere but the cup. Despite some of the longest odds in the history of the event, Kaley Shaheen was eventually crowned the champion! A modest celebration followed Kaley’s victory as she was seen explaining her strategy to her puppy Pearl Shaheen. All proceed raised were donated to the Alzheimer's Association - Greater Michigan Chapter.
