Mill Steel Wins West Michigan Best & Brightest Award selected as an Elite Award winner in the category of Recruitment, Selection and Orientation! This is Mill Steel's 9th year winning an Elite Award.

Every year organizations throughout the region contend to be one of West Michigan’s Best and Brightest Companies to Work For. Only those that distinguish themselves as having the most innovative human resources practices, and those who exhibit continued commitment to employee enrichment, can be bestowed this award. Of the 101 companies fortunate enough to receive this honor, 13 are selected as Elite Award winners, one for each category of judgement criteria.

The winners were honored on May 3rd at an annual symposium and awards program at the JW Marriott in Grand Rapids. Before the awards ceremony, Corporate Development and Quality Systems Manager, Troy Mossel, took the stage to contribute to a Best Practices Panel. The panel consisted of representatives from previous Elite Award winning companies. The discussion was moderated by Shelly Irwin from WGVSU and focused on each company’s strengths relating to associate engagement, employee retention, community outreach, work-life balance, etc.

Individuals were selected at random to receive a survey regarding Mill Steel’s performance in various categories. An independent research firm evaluated the responses and selected the winners based on how the company scored amongst regional standards for each category. Thank you to everyone that took the time to complete a survey and provide honest feedback, it was truly the support from associates that earned Mill Steel this honor!

Associate Highlight Mike Tomasaitis, Production Manager

What is your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment would have to be moving to Jeffersonville to help start this facility. There is no way this could have been accomplished without the support of the outstanding partnership group, specifically Rob Vella, the management staff, and the guys on the floor. I say it often, but the guys on the floor are the magic. They are what makes something like this possible and I cannot thank them enough for their hardwork and dedication in getting this facility started. Name: Dylan Hagan Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Inside Sales Intern Dylan is a senior at Grand Valley State University, majoring in Supply Chain Management. A few of Dylan’s interests include yoga, coffee, and soccer. He is from Plymoth, Michigan but if he could live anywhere in the world, he would choose Barcelona.

Two interesting facts about Dylan are that he was a vegetarian for ten years and has never flown on an airplane.

Name: Russell Werra Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Outside Processing Russell was born and raised in West Michigan and is very close to his family. He is a sports fanatic; he loves to play or watch any type of sport. His favorite team is University of Michigan. He took up MMA a year ago and occasionally enjoys going for runs. Outside of sports, he loves to hang out with his friends and enjoys the downtown scene. Russell has a Shitzu-Toy Poodle mix named Kirby. An interesting fact about Russell is that he once cliff jumped from a height of 60 ft. in North Carolina!

Name: Ethan Maust Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Quality Ethan graduated in December from Michigan State’s Honors College with a degree in Applied Engineering and a concentration in Supply Chain Management. He enjoys playing and watching basketball, soccer, baseball, and flag football. Outside of sports, Ethan occasionaly plays Xbox and edits videos for fun. Some interesting facts about Ethan are that he just moved to Grand Rapids, and he knows German after taking classes for years; ask him to say something and he'll give it his best shot!

Ben is currently a junior at Grand Valley State University, majoring in General Business. He enjoys playing and watching any type of sport. He also likes to run, bike, and spend time with his family and friends. His family has a nine-year-old Golden Retriever named Eli. Ben is from Rockford, Michigan, but if he could live anywhere in the world it would be Hawaii. An interesting fact about Ben is that he played soccer for Muskegon Community College and the semi-pro team, the Muskegon Risers!

Name: Mark VandeKieft Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Charting Mark was a member of the Grand Rapids production team for five years, but recently transitioned to a role in Charting.

He is married to his wife, Heather, and together they have three kids; Elissa (17), Kendal (12), and Ethan (8). Mark and Heather have three dogs, a brown Labrador named Bear, a Pointer mix named Tyler, and a Poodle mix named Bella. Outside of work, Mark enjoys fishing, hunting, watching football or baseball, and watching his kids' sporting events. An interesting fact about Mark is that he has traveled to 48 of the 50 states (Alaska and Hawaii are next on his bucket list)!

Name: Calliope Devries Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Logistics Intern Calliope is currently a sophomore at Ohio University, majoring in Political Science and Anthropology. Her family can be described through the movie, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” Calli has three dogs, an American Bulldog (Lucy), a yellow Labrador (Duke), and a Doberman Miniature Pinture (Ruger). Calli’s hobbies and interests include dogs, golf, hunting, fishing, boating, and making her uncle (Alex) pots of coffee. An interesting fact about Calli is that she’s a 4th of July baby!

Marine Memorial

Building Products Sales Director, Brian Vella, proudly served 6 years with the 1st Battalion 24th Marines. To commemorate his brothers fallen in combat, he donated a memorial to the city of Canton, MI in their honor seven years ago. Over the last six months, he raised over $5,000 for memorial improvements, which included the addition of three flagpoles and updated landscaping. Brian hosted a memorial rededication ceremony on Memorial Day, with a great turnout of over 500 people!

In honor of those we have lost while serving and protecting our country, Brian says it best, “We shall never forget the sacrifices so many have made for our freedom.” He continues, “It was an honor for me to dedicate this memorial 7 years ago, and again this past weekend.”

Congratulations!

Congrats to Zach Lee and his fiancé Kaliegh on their recent engagement. Zach popped the question by surprising her with a video of their favorite memories together this past Sunday. He got down on one knee at the John Collins Park, overlooking Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The couple has been dating for 3 years and planning has begun for a wedding late next summer!
