Q2 Community Outreach Recap:

Operation Injured Soldiers

As Q2 comes to an end, we’re closing out fundraising efforts for our second charity of the year, Operation Injured Soldiers. We’ve set the bar high this quarter by raising a total of $3,800! Here’s a quick look at what took place to get us there:

April— Jean Fridays & Hockey Shootout. The ever popular Jean Fridays, including a Panama Maximus bonus day—complete with a Hawaiian shirt dance off judged by Mark Thaler— raised a whopping $1,972! At the April luncheon, a Carl Quenneville cutout defended the goal, but it wasn't enough to stop Kristin Cole from putting a slap shot in to win the hockey shootout.

May—50/50 Raffles & Mario Kart Tournament. A full bracket of 36 players showed up the day of the May luncheon ready to race and eager for victory. The robust gaming talent that day was not enough to defeat Kevin Davenport. Megan Gillespie put up a great effort in the finals, but Davenport ultimately took home the title. We also raised a good amount in 50/50 ticket sales—congrats to Alex Krestakos and Sherry VanDenAkker for winning the drawings.

June—Cornhole Tournament. Sixteen teams hit the yard for some sunshine and good ol’ fashioned cornhole! In an unfortunate turn of events, Team Biggie Smalls (Alex Krestakos and Paul Dooge) took home the championship in the final showdown versus The Mehchums (Zach Lee and Mitch Ganzon). With a highly suspicious record of winning Mill Steel activities, Alex is now under review by the MS Games Committee, facing a charge of banned participation in future events. More to come as the story unfolds.

We raised more than enough to make Mill Steel a platinum sponsor of the Heroes on the Dunes event taking place at Silver Lake Sand Dunes on August 6th. Sam Darrow — Logistics

What is your role within the logistics department?

I currently coordinate all outbound shipments from our Jeffersonville plant.

What do you like best about your job?

There is never a dull day with the Logistics/Credit group, I love working in a fun and fast paced environment, it makes the days go by quickly and I enjoy coming to work every day.

Tell us a little known fact about you.

I am vegan, I love to experiment with new vegan recipes. It makes cooking more of a challenge and is so much more rewarding when it turns out great!

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

Food and nutrition have always been interesting to me, I would love to go back to school to study dietetics and learn more about human health.

What is your personal motto and why?

A coworker at my previous job once told me that If you are going to be someone you need to be that person all of the time. I try to live by that every day and do my best to maintain a consistent attitude both at work and outside of work.

What quality do you admire most in a person?

I believe that kindness is one of the most important qualities a person can have.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

As an ongoing accomplishment, my son is what I am the most proud of. Watching him grow up into the smart, polite and loving person that he is makes me proud every day.

TS Terms Defined: Connecting what we do to our quality system Production Part Approval Process (PPAP): Defines generic requirements for production part approval, including production and bulk materials (sealants, chemicals, coatings, etc.). The purpose of PPAP is to determine if all customer engineering design records and specification requirements are properly understood by the organization.

In addition, that the manufacturing process has the potential to produce product consistently meeting these requirements during an actual production run at the quoted production rate.

Important Facts about PPAP:  As a raw material supplier, Mill Steel is required to submit material that meets our customer’s requirements.  PPAP was written and required by Chrysler, Ford, and GM. Mill Steel Awarded Gold Key of Excellence Mill Steel has been awarded the Rural Builder Gold Key of Excellence for 2016, making this the sixth year in a row to receive the honor! The Gold Key recognizes the elite in the building industry. Hundreds of companies qualify through nominations, but only the top 10 percent receive the honor.

This annual award is given based on the feedback from the Rural Builder readers. Through a ballot process, they select their favorite suppliers based on six criteria: quality of customer service, on-time delivery, product quality, warranty procedures, pricing and no surprises between what is expected and what is delivered. We’re so very honored that our customers think highly of us and took the time to nominate Mill Steel.

With Pete Buck Article by: Taylor Keefer Monthly Business Briefs were introduced to the Mill Steel team in April of 2015. These meetings will keep our team informed, while continuously training and educating all of the departments within our

Rapid Response Pete Buck, along with Steve Schwartz and Brandon Steward make up Mill Steel’s Rapid Response team, the subject of June’s Monthly Business Brief. They are responsible for acknowledging a customer’s inquiry within five minutes and quoting back to the customer within an hour. They search Mill Steel’s inventory, as well as utilize our vendor’s network for steel options.

The idea for the Rapid Response team started in November of 2003 with an order from GM on Thanksgiving Day. As an industry pioneer, Mill Steel recognized the need in the marketplace for “spot buys” and thus the Rapid Response team was born. Our Rapid Response department specializes in fulfilling orders same day or next day to help fulfill a customer’s urgent need for steel. This can be caused from a variety of situations, such as; a current vendor being late with a customer’s order, a sudden need for steel on a non-contract item, unexpected customer quantity increases or “move ups”, items not on a program or a contract, and also for slit and master coil sales.

From purchasing, applications, sales, and logistics; the Rapid Response department could not operate without the excellent communication and priority placed on these orders by the entire Mill Steel team. He thanked everyone for their continued assistance in the process.

Introducing Mr. & Mrs. Zimmer On June 18th, Sara, formerly Tardani, and her fiancé Kyle tied the knot with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony and reception at Sara’s family home in Norton Shores, MI. The weather was beautiful and it was a ton of fun for all. The newlyweds honeymooned in the sunny and warm St. Thomas. Congratulations and many years of happiness to you both!

Congratulations to Armando and Angelica Medina on their beautiful baby boy, Aiden Colt. He arrived on May 27th at 10:55pm.

Aiden weighed 9lbs and was 20” long. Big sister Isabella (8) is having a wonderful time being a big helper, but she does have a hard time dealing with Aiden’s sleep schedule...he sleeps all day and is up all night. Good luck to you all on switching that schedule around. Welcome to the Mill Steel family Aiden!

Name: Cory Watts Location & Department: Jeffersonville / Production (78” Slitter) Cory Watts has nine siblings and is a father of two beautiful children, a boy and a girl. In his free time, Cory enjoys watching sports and playing pool. Cory’s friends describe him as a funny and strong minded guy. His favorite TV show is Fast N’ Loud. Three things left on Cory’s bucket list are skydiving, owning a monster truck, and driving at a speed of 200 mph!

Name: Blake Edwards Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Logistics Intern A big welcome to Blake Edwards! Blake is the new logistics intern at Mill Steel.

He will be a Junior at Grand Valley State University this fall, studying Finance and Supply Chain Management. Blake enjoys golfing, watching Red Wings games, playing guitar, and spending time with family and friends. He is hoping to go into consulting after he graduates.

Name: Jason Crowhorn Location & Department: SSP Jeffersonville / Operator (Break Press) Jason Crowhorn recently joined our SSP team in Jeffersonville! Jason has three siblings and one pet. In his free time, Jason enjoys hunting deer. Jason’s favorite TV show is NCIS. If he could travel anywhere in the world for vacation, Jason would visit Scotland.

Name: Julianne Potvin Location & Department: Grand Rapids SPS / Inside Account Manager Julianne started with Mill Steel as an intern in January, and she is now working full time in the SPS department! Julianne will be graduating from Grand Valley State University in the winter of 2016, majoring in Supply Chain Management.

In her free time, she loves playing and watching sports. Julianne also enjoys spending time with her friends and family and traveling to new places.

Name: Megan Donovan Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Accounts Receivable Megan began working with Mill Steel as an Inside Sales intern in January, and she is now a full time employee in the finance department! Megan recently graduated in May from Aquinas College with a BBA and Communications degree. On the weekends, you will find Megan out enjoying music concerts and festivals with her friends and family. She also enjoys traveling and plans to visit Peru in the future.

She has a dog named Snoop and cat named Frank.

Location & Department: Jeffersonville / Production (Cut-to-length) Lazaro is happily married and the father of two kids. Lazaro recently began working on the cut-to-length line in production and takes his job seriously. Lazaro considers his promotion to be one of his greatest achievements. On the weekends he enjoys spending time with his family.

In his free time, Marcus enjoys gardening, which is perfect because he loves vegetables. An interesting fact about Marcus, is that he is currently working with his daughter and son to become a black belt in karate.

Name: Patrick Whitehair Location & Department: Jeffersonville / Operator (78” Slitter) Patrick is married and has an adorable four year old son. In his free time, Patrick enjoys spending time with his family and grilling outside. One interesting fact about Patrick is that he lived in Hawaii for two years! Three things left on Patrick’s bucket list are traveling outside the country, sky diving, and visiting Las Vegas.

Name: Bobby Couch Jr. Location & Department: Jeffersonville / Operator (Slitter) Bobby is engaged to his lovely fiancé, Jolie. Bobby and Jolie are expecting a baby girl, named Bella, this August. In his free time, Bobby enjoys coaching and playing baseball, painting, and golfing.

Bobby is an army veteran and was an allstate baseball player in 2002 and 2003.

Three things left on Bobby’s bucket list are traveling to Europe, driving a Lamborghini, and swimming with sharks!

Name: Kaley Shaheen Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Marketing Coordinator Kaley recently joined Mill Steel as our new Marketing Coordinator! She graduated in April from Grand Valley State University with a degree in Advertising & Public relations, and an art minor. In her free time, Kaley enjoys spending time outdoors, running, exploring the town with friends and family, and painting. Kaley also loves traveling out west to visit her two older brothers.

Name: Jerrod Williams Location & Department: Jeffersonville / Lab Jerrod Williams, who is better known as Jrod, is the father of two children. He also owns two pets. Jerrod appreciates the outdoors and his favorite hobbies include camping, rafting, and canoeing. If Jerrod could travel anywhere in the world for vacation, he would visit either Greece or Italy. Jerrod’s friends describe him as a happy, dependable guy, and a caring father.
