The program's independent panel of international experts will select the winners in each category. Winners of the Global Metals Awards will be announced on May 17 at the Marriott Grosvenor Square in London at a black-tie dinner.

Mill Steel is proud to be recognized as a finalist in the Service Center of the Year category for the American Metal Market’s Awards for Steel Excellence! This is one of the most prestigious and recognizable awards programs in the global steel industry, in which the AMM celebrates companies large and small for achieving excellence in a number of areas. Now in its ninth year, the 2018 program will feature 16 distinct categories.

Winners are selected by a panel of judges with extensive steel industry leadership experience. Judges evaluate the nominations using a point-based qualitative approach to determine the winners. The nomination and judging process is audited by and in full compliance with Euromoney/Institutional Investor guidelines and standards to ensure integrity and objectivity. We look forward to the Awards dinner in June, where the winners from all categories will be announced!

Associate Highlight Tom Gless, Material Applications Coordinator

Tom and his wife, Kim, a few years ago.

What is your role here at Mill Steel?

I work in the Material Applications department. I match customer orders with the steel that meets their specifications and create charts for slitting. I strive to create the most efficient charts possible, with the least amount of machine reworks and scrap.

What do you like best about your job?

The best part of my job is the people I get to work with. Mill Steel associates are the strength of the company, they are what makes Mill Steel a great company.

Where are you from, and who makes up your family?

I was born, raised, and live in Alto, Michigan. I’ve been married to my wife Kim for 41 years. She is my best friend and I would do anything for her, except hold her purse in public. We have four kids, two boys and two girls. I am proud of how they turned out. I give their mother credit for that. I have ten grandkids that range in ages from two-months-old to nine-years-old.

I am very lucky that they all live in West Michigan.

We also have two cats. Buddy who is ten-years-old and is still scared of us, and Boo Boo, who is 18-years-old, deaf and crazy.

How do you define success and how do you measure up to your own definition?

For me, success is being surrounded by family, being happy, and being comfortable with who I am. I feel I have been very successful with the first one, somewhat successful with the second one. The third one is still a daily struggle for me.

What job would you be terrible at?

Being a motivational speaker. I get scared if I have to speak in front of more than three people.

What are you interested in that most people haven’t heard of?

I like Metal music. Mostly music

from 2002 through 2012. I enjoy music that is intense and angry. For some reason, I also like golf balls.

I have around 2,000 of them at home.

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

Washers. It is the perfect game for me. Throw shiny object into box.

Simple. So mentally, it is perfect for me. Physically it is perfect. You see, I have “little boy arms”. Having “little boy arms” allows freedom of movement, which is perfect for washers.

What is your most noticeable characteristic?

I am extremely handsome.

B u i l d-A-B ear Re cap On March 15th, over 20 Mill Steelers gathered at our local Build-ABear Workshop to make stuffed animals for the patients of Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital (HDCH). A total of 27 furry friends were crafted with love in hopes of bringing smiles to the children at HDCH. Susan Bereens, our contact from Child Life Services, advised the bears will be part of the “Birthday Closet.” Children get to pick a prize from the closet on their birthdays or to celebrate treatment milestones, such as completing a final round of chemo. She also said the animals we make are very popular each year and go quickly! Thank you to all that participated!

Name: Jack Galen Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Inside Sales Jack is from a town south of Chicago called Homewood but is currently living in Tinley Park. He will be moving to Grand Rapids soon along with his pet tortoise named Toby. He enjoys playing tennis, hiking, biking, and walking his parents’ bulldog Dexter in his free time. Jack enjoys Halloween and looks forward to the cooler Fall weather and the changing of the leaves. One of his favorite pastimes is watching his favorite sports teams, the Chicago Bears and the Indiana Hoosiers.

Jeffrey grew up on the southern shores of Lake Michigan. He and his wife Debbie have lived in Indianapolis, IN for 15 years.

Previously they lived in Long Beach, Indiana for 23 years. They recently purchased the house he grew up in there, and are updating it for a summer beach house and retirement home. His wife, Debbie, is a school counselor and together they have two grown children, Jon and Alyson. Jon has two kids and Alyson is getting married this August, coincidently, on Jeff and Debbie’s 39th anniversary. Jeffrey enjoys collecting vinyl records, vintage stereo equipment, bicycling and would like to travel to Europe in the future. He also has a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon named Lovie.

Name: Scott Cox Location & Department: Jeffersonville / Packline Scott and his wife Lacie have been married for five years and have an 11-year-old son named Julien. Scott enjoys video games, drawing, fishing, camping and playing sports with his son. His favorite foods are steak and pizza. He has three dogs; Jayla, an 11-year-old Pug, Gemma, a two-yearold Bulldog, and Apollo a four-month-old Rottweiler. An interesting fact about Scott is that he enjoys being a team player as well as a leader.

Darrell has six children, who he loves spending time with. Outside of work, he enjoys all sports activities and relaxing with his family.

Darrell is also a food junkie and loves trying out all different types of foods!

Bowl For Kids Recap Associates from the Grand Rapids office attended the 9th annual Bowl For Kids' Sake event in support of the Mentoring Services program at D.A. Blodgett St. John's on March 9th! The night was full of strikes, spares, and a few gutter balls. Overall, it was a great time for a wonderful cause.

Anniversaries

Congratulations to Ian Fraser and his wife, Kay! They eloped on March 9th with a few family members present to share the day with. They spent their honeymoon in Chicago visiting the museums and the Shedd Aquarium. The couple plans on having a bigger honeymoon in the near future, but they aren’t sure where yet. Ian and Kay live in the East Lansing area and hope to move closer to this side of the state as soon as Kay graduate’s college. Good luck to the newlyweds on their new adventure!

She Said Yes!

Congratulations to Chase Channing and his fiancé Samantha on their recent engagement. Chase and Samantha have been together for about six years. They originally met at Ferris State University in 2010. They got engaged on January 9th on a Royal Caribbean Cruise.

The proposal took place during a Love and Marriage game show while on the cruise. The cruise was kind enough to provide them with a video of the engagement since the Game Show was filmed. They haven’t set a date yet, but would like it to be within the next year and a half. They aren’t in a big hurry. Good luck to you, Chase and Samantha!

Contest Corner

Every spring, Mill Steelers take to the hallowed grounds that is the 25 feet between pods of the main room, and take their chance at glory in the Mill Steel Putt-Putt contest. This year, the championship went to a familiar victor, Alex Krestakos. Alex reclaimed his spot atop the podium with a brilliant showing of putting mastery. He successfully read the line, judged the grain, and sunk three meandering, improbable, long-range putts. The triumph was not without resistance, as the field put forth a mighty effort. Round one featured putts made by Julianne Potvin, Megan Donovan, and Amanda Allspach. Amanda and Alex were the only two to advance in the second round. The event was decided in the third round, as Alex calmly buried his final putt of the day. Alex gave a short acceptance speech. Although brief and humble, his words seemed to resonate and inspire those who heard it. All proceeds f rom the event go to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

His current role is in the shipping department on 2nd shift, but he is talented in all facets of logistics and helps out wherever needed.
