Mill Steel Named 101 Best & Brightest to Work For It’s another bright year for Mill Steel Company as we are once again named one of West Michigan’s 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For! This is Mill Steel’s 16th year winning this distinguished award for having the most innovative and thoughtful human resources practices! An independent research firm evaluates each company’s entry based on key measures in various categories. They include Compensation, Benefits and Employee Solutions; Employee Enrichment, Engagement and Retention; Employee Education and Development; Recruitment, Selection and Orientation; Employee Achievement and Recognition; Communication and Shared Vision; Diversity and Inclusion; Work-Life Balance; Community Initiatives; and Strategic Company Performance. Mill Steel recorded higher than the regional median in seven of the ten categories, an overall great performance and score. The winning companies will be honored on Tuesday, May 7 at the JW Marriott in downtown Grand Rapids. They will also compete for 13 elite awards, one granted for each category the nominees are evaluated on, and an overall winner that has excelled in all categories will be honored with a “Best of the Best” award. The elite award winners will be revealed during the luncheon. “These companies have created impressive organizational value and business results through their policies and best practices in human resource management. This award has become a designation sought after by hundreds of West Michigan companies and is a powerful recruitment tool in the drive to attract and retain exceptional employees,” said Jennifer Kluge, President and CEO, Best and Brightest Programs. Thank you to everyone that took time to complete the anonymous survey that was randomly distributed last August. We would not be where we are today without each of you! Article by: Amanda Allspach

Associate Highlight Sara Zimmer, Purchasing Manager

Sara with her son, Graham, husband, Kyle, and cat.

What is your role here at Mill Steel? I’m a Purchasing Manager. I coordinate purchases for our Building Products business unit, manage painted inventory levels, and provide quotes to our sales team. What do you like best about your job? My favorite part about my job is the culture – I enjoy coming to work every day and have fun being here! What is the biggest challenge? The biggest challenge is keeping up with the fast pace; some days there are a million different things going on, and you have to be able to prioritize and react quickly. Where are you from and who makes up your family? I’m from Muskegon, Michi-

gan and still live there. My family consists of my husband, Kyle, my one-year old son, Graham, my parents, inlaws, nieces, and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins. Most of us live within the same two mile radius, so we see each other a lot! Who has inspired you in your life and why? My parents have been an inspiration throughout my life. They’ve showed me the value of a strong work ethic and encouraged me to earn what I want and be accepting of others. They also taught me to never forget to have fun in life! What is the most annoying question that people ask you? If I have anything to fill out a transfer truck...just kidding!

Sara and her son, Graham.

If you won the lottery, what would your life look like a year after you bring home the winnings? It all depends on the amount of money, but I’d like to think my life wouldn’t change much, especially in only one year. I would think long and hard about what to do with the money, probably investing most of it...or I’d go rogue and donate it all to a cat shelter. What did you want to be when you grew up? When I was little, I remember wanting to be a veterinarian. I have a big heart for animals, and I want to save them all! However, I certainly wouldn’t have had the stomach to do that job.
