Youth In Business Graduation The 2019 school year for East Kentwood Public Schools is coming to a close and along with it, Mill Steel just wrapped up its fourth season of Youth in Business (YIB). We are pleased to share there were three graduates of the program, that have been paired with a mentor since the launch of YIB. That’s three students that have benefited from 40 mentoring sessions throughout the years and will walk away from this experience with life skills and tools to excel as they look toward their next step in life – what an awesome accomplishment!

But don’t take our word for it, hear what the graduates and mentors had to say about participating in YIB: "I really liked Youth In Business. You guys bring us here, feed us snacks, and take time out of your day to hang out with us and teach us new things. I like your company for being this way.”

Associate Highlight George Crone, Jeffersonville First Shift Supervisor

What is your role here at Mill Steel?

I am the First Shift Supervisor for the Jeffersonville, IN plant. I lead the first shift associates in their day to day operations. With the help of Dave Dziuban, Cody Pendygraft and Bryan Lewis, I schedule the production of the 78, 71, and the 35 machines. I also order supplies for the Jeffersonville plant. In my spare time, I take the lead on all audit and steel inventory responsibilities.

What do you like best about your job?

The best part of this job is definitely working with the team in Jeffersonville.

We have worked very hard to put together a great team that understands and follows Mill Steel policies and procedures.

What is the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge in this job is the same as the best part of this job; working with this team! We are family here, and everyone knows that family members know almost everything about you so they can push your buttons better than anyone else can. You must be careful what you say around the plant or you will quickly become the center of everyone’s fun for the day!

Where are you from and who makes up your family?

I am from Southern Indiana, but I have lived in many parts of the country and the world. My wife April and I have four children; Reagan (22), Don (19), Dylan (16) and Emersyn (3).

How do you define success and how do you measure up to your own definition?

As a child and young adult, I measured success as most of us do at that age by dollars and possessions. As I have grown older and wiser, it has become clear to me that there is only one way to gauge success. It can only be measured by the family you have raised, and the home you have built for them. A family is not measured by their future assets, but by the love and care that they give each other. The home is not rated on its size or luxuries, but by the memories that were created there.

What is one of your favorite quotes and why?

I have two quotes that have always meant a lot to me, even as a child. Even more so once I learned more about the President who gave them to us and the context for the quotes. The first quote is, “Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world. Marines don’t have that problem” - President Ronald Reagan.

of humor and I can tell a good story. I always respond to them with “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story,” and always keep a straight face.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I would definitely like to be the dayshift beach front bartender on a tropical island. I would work 9 to 5, knowing that's the slow part of the day so I would be well rested for quitting time.

At 5 o'clock I would very quickly slide to the other side of the bar and become the most loyal customer.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

In junior high and high school, I thought I would graduate and join the Army. Then during the summer after my junior year, a friend that I worked with joined the Navy. I was looking through a book that his recruiter had given him of all the jobs available in the Navy. I found one that peaked my interests. It was a technician for nuclear power plants on submarines. I thought It sounded great. I would learn a very useful trade and I would get to see the world! Plus, Tom Clancy was at the height of his career and he had made submarines sound awesome.

Name: Darryl Grimes Location & Department: Grand Rapids / IT Director Darryl and his wife, Melissa, have been happily married for 20 years. They have two daughters, Brennan (18) and Karson (14). Brennan graduated in May from Wayland Union Schools and will be attending Michigan State University in the fall, and Karson will be starting her first year of high school in the fall. Darryl recently moved from Dorr, MI to a new home on Gun Lake in Wayland, MI. Darryl enjoys spending time outside, boating, traveling, attending concerts, and trying new locally owned restaurants. Darryl’s family has two cats that they adopted from a shelter that his wife and daughters volunteer at.

Name: Josh Holtz Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Credit Analyst Josh is originally from Mount Pleasant, MI but currently resides in Grand Rapids. Josh enjoys sports, motorcycles, traveling, and live music.

He also loves spending time outdoors, partaking in hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking when he can. Josh has a German Shepherd named Oden who is almost two years old. On his way home from work, he looks forward to seeing Oden.

Name: Bob Kula Location & Department: Houston / Account Manager Bob has been in a relationship with his girlfriend Kari for five years. He has two children, Emily (27) and Clay (25). He was born and raised in the Detroit Metro area. Bob currently resides in Woodlands, Texas (North Houston). In his free time, he enjoys golfing, and attending college and NFL football games, hunting, and watching youth softball. An interesting fact about Bob is that he played football for MSU from 1985-1989. He was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the 7th round of the 1990 NFL draft and played two years in the World League of American Football in Montreal before starting his career in steel at our very own Melvindale plant in 1991.

Name: Fraser Wilson Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Intern Fraser will be a sophomore this fall at Michigan State University, where he is studying Supply Chain Management. In his free time, he enjoys running, swimming, and biking. He also loves playing basketball, fishing, and any other outdoor activities. He has two dogs, a Boxer named Izzy and a Pitbull named Zola. They are both two-years-old. He also has a 14-year-old cat named Snickerz. Fraser is from Kent City, MI, and if he could live anywhere in the world, he would choose Northern Michigan. An interesting fact about Fraser is that he runs track at Michigan State University!

Jeremy was born and raised in Houston, TX. He is happily married to his wife, Casey. Together they have three daughters and one son; Emili (24), Ella (14), Reagan (14), and Nicholas (17). Jeremy loves to travel and experience new cultures. He has been to Japan, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Austria, Mexico, and Thailand just to name a few. He also likes a good cigar, a nice glass of scotch or bourbon, playing golf, fishing, and beach time.

His family has two dogs, a super-Beagle named Maggie and a lovable-Lab named Miller.

Name: Megan Hartmus Location & Department: Grand Rapids / MarketinG Intern Megan is currently a senior at Grand Valley State University, majoring in Hospitality and Tourism Management with an emphasis in Meeting and Event Management. Throughout her high school and college career, Megan has bowled for her respective schools on a competitive league. She especially enjoys bonding with her teammates! In her free time, she enjoys being outside, hiking, hammocking, and camping. Megan was born and raised in Novi, MI. If she could live anywhere in the world, it would be Cancun, Mexico. An interesting fact about Megan is that during her freshmen year of college, she and her roommate bought a pet hedgehog and named him Pickles.

Name: Brett Paton Location & Department: Houston / SSP Account Manager Brett is originally from San Antonio, TX and he currently lives in Bulverde, a small suburb north of the city. He is happily married to his wife Courtney. They have an eight-year-old son, Beck, and a four-year-old daughter, Brynlee.

They also have a Chocolate Lab and an American Yellow Lab. The family’s calendar consists of attending running events, football games, basketball games, swim meets, and cheer or dance practices for both of his children. When they’re not busy with sport events, Brett’s family likes to fish at the coast, hunt on their ranch, or spend time outside. An interesting fact about Brett is that during the first 15 years of his professional life, he was a fireman, paramedic, an instructor and rescue tech!

Name: Jamie Taylor Location & Department: Houston / Account Manager Jamie has been married to his wife Stephanie for 20 years. They have three children, Chase (14), Gavin (12), and Morgan (8). They also have a family dog named Lucky, he is a Shih-Tzu Bichon mix. His family lived in Noblesville, IN for 15 years prior to moving to Magnolia, Texas where they currently reside. When he’s not attending his kids' sport events, Jamie enjoys golfing, fishing, hunting, and fireworks display shows. An interesting fact about Jamie is that he was in Medical Sales for 12 years prior to his steel career.

They're Married!

Congratulations to Tina and Dan Post on tying the knot on May 18, 2019! They were married at Frontline Bible Church in Byron Center and celebrated only a few minutes away at the Postema Center. They couldn’t say enough about how wonderful the day was and the great memories they shared with their families and friends. For their honeymoon, they spent a few days in Nashville, TN. We are so happy for you both and wish you the best in this next chapter of your lives together.

Here's the scoop on recent role changes within our company.

Matt Schuiteman has been interning with the Logistics team since October of 2018. He recently graduated from Grand Valley State University and we are pleased to share that he has moved into a full-time position as a Logistics Coordinator. Matt will be working alongside Zach Lee and Mark Etherton, handling Houston and Anderson outbound shipping. He is a great addition to the team and we are happy to have him aboard!

Contest Corner

Featured in the month’s Contest Corner is Mill Steel Mario Kart. Early on it looked like a tournament destined to have an upset champion. The Recoiler’s own Kaley Shaheen made a Cinderella run to the Elite 8 shocking the field and fans alike. But as these things tend to go, the heavy favorites made their way to the finals. In an unbelievable finale, Jack Galen, Tyler Uhazie, Aaron Dehn, and Russell Werra battled until the very last turn. The Champion was a familiar one as Tyler Uhazie defended his title and took home the W. All proceeds were donated to our Q2 charity, Wounded Warrior Project. Stay tuned for next month's contes corner featuring Office Olympics!

My dad is a passionate man and growing up he never concealed his emotions from us. Whether it was yelling obscenities at the TV when the Detroit Tigers slipped up, knee-slap belly-laughing at his own jokes or breaking down into fearful tears when his normally obedient daughter came home later than expected.
