The office was full of Halloween spirit this year as Mill Steelers came dressed in costume for the big day! Along with costumes, several people competed in the appetizer and dessert contest - arguably the office's favorite part of the festivites! There were so many great costumes that it was a very difficult decision for voters. A big thank you to those who brought tasty food for all to enjoy! Below is a rundown of the competition winners:

Associate Highlight Tammy Root, Outside Processing Coordinator

What is your role here at Mill Steel?

I am part of the Outside Processing department, where I work with our coating partners to ensure we have enough painted material ready to ship for customer orders.

What is the biggest challenge?

I like the daily challenges that arise in Outside Processing. There is always something new to problem solve, which keeps me on my toes.

Where are you from, and who makes up your family?

I grew up in Ada and went to Lowell High School (shhh, don’t tell a). I now live in Byron Center, MI with my husband Randy, daughter Mady (15), two dogs (Toby and Kinsey) and two cats (Sasha and Diesel).

My mom and dad live less than two miles away and so does my sister and her family.

What is one of your favorite quotes and why?

“Don’t tell God how big your problem is, tell your problem how big God is.” There are so many things every day that people could dwell on or take personally. However, I believe if you just think about this quote and let God take control, He will steer you in the right direction.

What other jobs have you worked in your life prior to Mill Steel?

Prior to joining Mill Steel, I spent my days in the customer service industry. I started out at Arby’s when I was in high school and took a management position there when I was eligible at age 18. At the time, I was the youngest General Manager (GM) in Michigan. I helped convert the store I worked at to a manager-training location and was the lead GM for opening a new location in Standale, MI. After 14 years, I decided to make a change.

My next adventure was Design 1 Salon, where I was the manager for almost 10 years. Boy, was that an experience managing 40 people! I really did love that job; I learned a lot about relationships and created many great friendships, along with learning so much about the beauty industry that I still use on a daily basis!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I have always loved dolphins, tropical fish, and the water. When I was 15, my parents took the family to Hawaii.

We went on many snorkeling adventures and whale watching tours, which made my love for marine biology so much stronger. My first semester at Grand Valley State University was geared towards the biology field. I could only pull off a C- in the classes I took so that deterred me and steered me in another direction.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and fur babies. I also love going to the gym, but having a teenage girl has been making that more of a challenge as of late.

Luckily, she will have her driver’s license next May. I never thought I would say that, but it is so true! I also love watching and attending sports – especially football, baseball, and hockey!

Name: Emily Phillips Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Inside Sales Emily recently graduated from Aquinas College with a degree in Business Administration and a concentration in Human Resources and Marketing. She is from the Kalamazoo, MI area and grew up in a small town called Hickory Corners. Emily enjoys the outdoors as much as the weather will permit, whether that be riding her bike, hiking, or visiting a new beach or park.

Name: Christian Horstman Location & Department: Jeffersonville / SSP Managment Christian has a large family, with three younger siblings and a brother with a baby on the way. Some of his hobbies include flying drones, playing sports, driving, cycling, and anything competitive. Christian has two rescued Pitbulls named Priscilla and Cyrus. An interesting fact about Christian is that he recently moved back to the Jeffersonville area after spending the last eight years away.

Shea has been married to her husband, Daniel for twelve years and they have a dog named Drago. She is from a suburb south of Nashville, but is currently enjoying city living in the downtown Nashville neighborhood of Historic Germantown. In her free time, Shea enjoys yoga, visiting museums and historical sites, volunteering at her church or local dog rescues, and traveling the globe with her husband. One thing on Shea’s bucket list is to visit Germany and meet her extended family that lives there.

Name: Ed Mack Location & Department: Jeffersonville / Packline Ed has a daughter, a son, and one grandson. His son will play football for Kentucky Christian College this year. In his free time, Ed enjoys completing puzzles, crosswords, and Sudoku. He also loves sports. An interesting fact about Ed is that he is a National Champion in Boxing.

Name: Brad Dumman Location & Department: Grand Rapids / Quality Intern Brad is currently a senior at Grand Valley State University, majoring in Marketing with an emphasis in Distribution and Logistics. He will be graduating in the spring of 2018. Brad is from Beverly Hills, MI, just outside of Detroit. Brad is a huge music fan; he enjoys going to concerts and music festivals with friends. He spends most of his free time working out and hanging out with friends. An interesting fact about Brad is that he competes in downhill skateboard competitions!

HR 101 With Sam Darrow: MercForce System We are excited to announce that we have made the switch over to the new payroll system! We are beginning to add capabilities and are ready to give access to profiles. Check your email for an enrollment notification from MercForce. The welcome email will come once your capabilities have been turned on, and will include instructions to set up your account. If you have not yet received your welcome email, please contact Samantha in Human Resources (Samantha.Trierweiler@millsteel. com). Access will begin with the ability to view and print check stubs. We will be adding capabilities including vacation requests and approvals, address changes, tax deductions, and insurance enrollment throughout the months of November and December.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Introducting Mr. & Mrs. Trierweiler

Congratulations to Sam Trierweiler and her husband Kyle! They started their walk in marraige together on September 23rd in Traverse City at the Grand Traverse Resort. Sam and Kyle met about five years ago when he was a chef at the restaurant that Sam managed. They spent their mini-honeymoon at Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes relaxing for a few days after their big day. They are planning on a full honeymoon next spring.

They are now officially a family of 3 (plus their dog, Cayenne). Sam’s son Brad loves being able to call Kyle his step-dad.

Congratulations to the Trierweiler family - we wish you many years of happiness!

Congratulations to Kristi Hagyard and her fiancé Shaydon on their recent engagement!

They met on a study abroad trip to Spain and have been together for almost 6 years. Shaydon popped the question while they were on vacation at the top of Cathedral Rock in Sedona, AZ. Along with spending time together, they like being outside and hanging out with friends. They plan to get married in the fall of 2018. We wish you both the best of luck on your new journey!

She Said Yes!

Congratulations to David Seekell and his fiancé Gabby, who are newly engaged as of October 10th!

David and Gabby met through his sister Chelsea, and have been together for five years. Here is their engagement story as told by David…

"I popped the question in a field behind my Grandpa’s house. It was the first place my sister ever took Gabby before I met her (she also took her senior pictures), somewhere we’ve gotten pictures taken before, and a place we always talked about getting married so I wanted to incorporate it in some way. My sister tricked her into thinking she was using her as a model for a photoshoot, little did she know that when she made her way back there, I’d be waiting for her with a record player spinning our song, “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds. I asked her to dance with me and then got down on one knee and asked the most important question of my life!"

Autumn Kathrynmarie Congratulations to Kody and Brittney Marie Reynolds on the birth of their beautiful baby girl, Autumn Kathrynmarie. She was born on October 6th, weighing in at a tiny 5 lb 15 oz and 19 inches long. Mom and baby are doing great, along with big brother Austin, who was very excited to meet his little sister. Welcome to the Mill Steel family, Autumn Kathrynmarie!

October’s Fun for Fundraising event, the Mummy Wrap, had participants in a disoriented frenzy! Teams competed to wrap one person as a mummy using as much toilet paper as possible within the two-minute time span. Congrats to Marie Peterson and Aaron Dehn for finishing their roll for the win! Congratulations are also in order for Casey VerStrate and Ben Fales on winning the “Best Mummy” portion of the competition with excellent wrapping skills!
