Mill Steel University Mill Steel has always been committed to investing in its most valuable asset, its people. The partner group understands that providing associates with the tools to excel at their jobs is integral to the success of the company. As Mill Steel continued to grow, it became increasingly evident that there must be a greater focus on training to keep pace with that growth. Therefore, Corporate Development Manager, Troy Mossel, started working on a company-wide training curriculum called Mill Steel University (MSU) in the spring of 2016. Joe Poot, Vice President of Purchasing says, “The goal was to provide the same continual education to all of our associates, making certain that everyone has the opportunity to hear the same message upon joining our company.” The original plan was to custom design a website to meet those needs, but instead Mill Steel opted for a preprogramed system that actually exceeded its needs. CABEM Technologies, a software developer located in Boston, MA, was selected for the job. In addition to providing a forum for housing the continual education, CABEM also offered a tool for efficiently managing competency training. This helps streamline record keeping and in turn, helps Mill Steel excel in industry audits. Mossel comments, “Each associate has their own Mill Steel University account. Upon logging in through our Millnet, they can see which courses are available to them and

what competencies they need to complete for their specific role at Mill Steel. Having a training agenda outlined not only benefits our existing team, it also allows new hires to begin training on day one. Mill Steel University also provides our management team an easy to use tool to track and measure development for each team member.” The Mill Steel University holds each associate accountable for his or her development and provides support to ensure that everyone remains engaged, thriving, and able to continue their progress. There are currently 8 training programs and over one hundred competencies available on the site, with many more to come. The Grand Rapids office team is has completed orientation on the program, with five operational facilities yet to go. Troy will continue to roll out MSU until all locations are up to speed, a process he estimates to be completed within the coming year. Look forward to an incentive program tied to MSU, with points for completion of classes that are redeemable in a Mill Steel store. Stay tuned for more details to come on that portion of the project!
