Welcome to Bald Sisters by Vichet Chum. This incredible play came to my attention through a series of excited emails about a play extending from Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. It got my attention because we were still in or coming out of a pandemic, and plays weren’t extending. To my delight, this play was written by Vichet Chum, who is no stranger to SLAC. He was an actor in our Playwright’s Lab. Celebrating Vichet as a playwright with his remarkable play is an honor.

With love and gratitude ~ Cynthia, Executive Artistic Director

A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT

Hello, fellow audience member. Whatever brings you to this particular performance, this day, in this moment, please know how grateful I am for your presence. You made a choice to be here, and in crafting this story, I honor that.

I wrote this story as a love letter to the Cambodian women in my life. They raised me. They fed me. They instructed me when I was being foolish. They laughed with and at me when I was being funny. They taught me about survival before I even understood its meaning or its value. How hard it is do so. But how necessary it is. To love in spite of. To love because.

I implore you, audience member, to not think of this as just a Cambodian story (though it very much is!), but a story about you. The ways you fight to be witnessed. The ways you are being called to witness another. The ways you love because.

And not to quote my own play (but I’m gonna): “You are here, and that matters.”

Cheers,

4 BALD SISTERS WELCOME

PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PROGRAM FOR EMERGING ARTISTS

Through the Professional Theatre Program for Emerging Artists (PTP), SLAC provides opportunities for students and early-career theatre artists to gain meaningful, fully paid experience by integrating them into the production cycle. This production’s PTP candidate is

“The PTP has given me invaluable time learning from a professional director. I’ve been able to work alongside the director and learn all that goes into directing outside of the rehearsal room. She’s also been incredibly kind enough to offer me her insight about directing by allowing me to ask questions about her process. It’s also given me a new perspective on how to work collaboratively with the creative team and actors!”

“This opportunity is very valuable to me. It’s an amazing opportunity to develop the skills necessary to work in the theatre industry at a professional level, and to meet spectacular people who constantly work hard to produce high-quality shows.”

Salt Lake Acting Company’s 2024/2025 Season

Saving live theatre, one play at a time

Whitelisted (Rights Pending)

Regional Premiere

Workshopped in SLAC’s 22/23 New Play Sounding Series

Oct. 2 - 27, 2024

A Haunting Comedy. Rebecca Burgess is living her life when weird, supernatural sh*t starts happening to her for no reason she can think of. This heart-pounding, suspenseful, highly theatrical piece is a cautionary tale that considers the possibility of cosmic justice in the absence of social justice.

The Robertassey

World Premiere

Workshopped in SLAC’s 18/19 New Play Sounding Series

Feb. 5 - Mar 2, 2025

A comedy about grief. Roberta arrives in Dublin but her suitcase—which contains her father’s ashes—doesn’t. Her trip turns into a magical mystery tour and the lost suitcase becomes a symbol of her life. This lyrical and intoxicating comedy tests forgiveness, love, and our trust in the universe.

Bat Boy: The Musical

Story & Book by Keythe Farley & Brian Flemming

Music & Lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe

Licensed under agreement with Weekly World News

Apr. 9 - May 4, 2025

The musical comedy/horror sensation based on the “cult story” published in The Weekly World News about a half boy/half bat creature discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia comes back to Salt Lake Acting Company after 21 years. This campy, heartfelt musical is a satirical commentary on prejudice and tolerance in America.

SLAC’s Summer Show World Premiere

June 25 - Aug. 17, 2025

You know the drill: Bring your friends to the best summer party in town! Don’t miss out on the fun. Join in on the laughter and treat yourself to a good time.

Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical!

Script by Mo Willems & Tom Warburton

Lyrics by Mo Willems

Music by Deborah Wicks La Puma Children’s Play | Season Add-on

Dec. 6 - 30, 2024
