The 4-H program guides our members to select quality livestock and maintain constant nutrition, health and daily care. There is a need to start with a good animal and maximize its potential so members can deliver the highest quality Alberta beef for our customers. Supporting 4-H members by purchasing a market project allows them to put money away for their future and to invest back into their business.
The 4-H program and its many supporters have helped send thousands of our youth to Universities, Colleges and Trade Schools. They have returned to become our business leaders, teachers, caregivers, farmers, mechanics, welders, and the list goes on. One thing is for sure, when you purchase a 4-H Steer, you are not just investing in a child’s future, but also in the future of the community.
We would like to extend a thank you to our past sponsors and buyers. Your support has strengthened our club and encouraged youth in agriculture. We have 13 steers and 1 lamb available to purchase. The beef & lamb raised by our 4-H members is outstanding. 4-H animals are raised with care, in a low stress environment with top notch veterinary care. Together with a ration of nutritious feed, the final project is delicious. Purchasing a 4-H market animal is a win/win situation! 4-H members are supported as young entrepreneurs and you bring home a tasty, farm raised product that you can feel good about serving to your family and friends.
JOIN US AT ACHIEVEMENT DAY
SUNDAY, MAY 11TH @ MILLARVILLE RACETRACK
You are invited to meet the members and preview the Steer & Lamb Sale.
This is a family friendly event that showcases the hard work and dedication of our 4-H members. Please plan to join us as our 4-H families are excited to share this experience with the community.
HOW DOES A 4-H MEMBER COME UP WITH THEIR PRICE?
Typically 4-H members research current market prices, as well as retail grocery store prices. They usually consult with a mentor, which could be a parent, a producer they look up to, or their 4-H leader. Using these factors, they calculate a price on their homeraised beef or lamb that is a fair premium for the quality meat they have raised.
WHAT ELSE DOES 4-H PROMOTE?
The 4-H program is designed to foster confidence, competency, and hands-on skill development in youth. The 4-H members must keep detailed records on the feeding & health of their project(s), participate in public speaking & community volunteer initiatives each year.
WHAT GOES INTO RAISING 4-H BEEF & LAMB?
The 4-H program promotes the "learn to do by doing" mindset in youngsters. The process of selecting, caring for, & raising these animals to the best of their ability is the sole job of the 4-H youth, who range in age from 9 - 21 years. Through mentors they discover what cattle/sheep like to eat & what makes their animal most comfortable (large pen size, clean bedding, feed variety are examples) & how to train these animals to follow a lead, have a bath & learn to accept pets & scratches from their human caretakers. Raising a 4-H project animal is hard work! 4-H members start a market beef project in October & a market lamb project in March & typically finish in May or June.

I would like to thank Bonanza Drilling, for purchasing my steer in 2024. I’m so pleased they shared the meat with their employees, it makes me proud to know so many people enjoyed the top quality Alberta Beef. It means so much that they purchased and financed another year of one of the biggest parts of my life, my Information Technology program at SAIT. I just finished my first year and will be going back to SAIT in the fall. When I’m done the IT portion, I want to continue with more school in Cyber Security. 4-H has helped me excel in my academic career because of the work ethic and perseverance that I learned in my 10 years of projects, record books and public speaking. I love 4-H so much and it’s because of 4-H Members, Leaders, mentors and buyers that I have succeeded.

My steer is named Ron Weasley because he’s kind, loyal and has red hair. He is a Limo Angus cross out of my first female 4-H project, who was the Supreme Champion Female of our club. My favourite thing is his spicy personality and his favourite thing is getting clipped and washed in the sunny weather. He is a lean, well muscled steer like the previous Limo projects we have raised. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Cory Jacobson and Ensign Drilling for purchasing my 2024 market project!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my buyer from last year, Bonanza Drilling for their support in purchasing my steer.

Thank you to my buyers Karen Genoway, Kevin Madden, Rhett Kidd, James Cummings and Ryan Sully. Thank you to Lonnie Lischka, Kevin Carre and Lisa Johnston for purchasing my spare steer, Po.
I like to play baseball, draw and reading when I am not helping my Mom on our ranch. I hope whoever buys Buddy knows I plan on using the money to buy either another steer or money towards a heifer and maybe some fun.

Hi, my name is Colbie Johnson and this is my first year in 4-H as a Junior member. My current market project is a Charolais Red Angus X purchased from Carlson Farms in Stavely, AB. Teddy is calm, quiet and likes to hang out with his best friend Red, my spare steer. When I am not working with Teddy, I like to play outside on the farm, draw, play guitar and play at the creek. Overall Teddy has been cooperative, but he can be a bit stubborn. We like to call him Teddy Bear and he is a gentle giant! I love working with him, and am excited to show him for my first time ever!

Hello! I'm Gracen Peloquin, a first-year Junior 4-H member. I've really enjoyed halter breaking Bandit, my first 4-H market steer project. He's a purebred Simmental steer, representing some top-quality Alberta beef. I named him Bandit because his white face markings reminded me of a bandit's mask. A big thank you to MAVV Farms for selling Bandit to me and getting me started with this fantastic 4-H opportunity. I've already learned so much this year, with my first public speaking experience being one of the most memorable! I am looking forward to showing Bandit off at the upcoming Club Achievement Day, Foothills District 4-H Show and 4-H on Parade.

I extend my sincere gratitude to MAVV Farms for selling me my purebred Simmental market steer project, who I've affectionately named "Patty" (short for Hamburger Patty!), affording me the opportunity to embark on this first project. Working with Patty has been a truly rewarding experience. The handling skills I've learned are even proving useful as I also start my first year of contact hitting in hockey!

Ferdinand is a big, gentle steer with a great figure & a calm easygoing attitude. I named him after the famous bull, who’d rather smell flowers than fight. While my Ferdinand isn’t sniffing daisies, he does love relaxing & getting brushed especially by the top of his tail. I’ve been raising Ferdinand since early fall, working to get him ready. From showmanship manners to precise feeding weights & grooming, we’ve spent a lot of time together & it’s paid off. Ferdinand walks smooth on the lead, stands calmly during shows, & is in outstanding condition. We’ve also focused on making sure Ferdinand meets premium meat standards. I’ve learned a lot this year about what makes great beef from my leader, including marbling, muscle development, & finish. Based on his build, feeding plan, & care, Ferdinand is on track to grade Triple AAA—which means he’s producing some of the best quality beef with excellent marbling & tenderness. This project has taught me so much about responsibility, animal care, & the effort it takes to raise livestock with pride & purpose. Whether we win ribbons or not, I’m proud of Ferdinand & all we’ve accomplished together. He’s more than just a project he a helped me build character, confidence, & community all while having fun! Thank you for taking the time to meet us & trust me, this steer is a cut above the rest!

It’s been such a great learning experience so far from daily care and feeding routines to building a bond with my animal. I’m gaining confidence and knowledge every day, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the project unfolds. I’m already looking forward to participating in 4-H again next year and continuing to grow and learn even more. Outside of 4-H I also play softball and do dance. I love having Midnight as my project this year because he is calm when my friends come over to see my 4-H and non-4-H projects. With the proceeds I will use it for my future steer or heifer project and my education.

WHY BUY BEEF IN BULK??
A Market Steer that weighs 1300 lbs will have an average yield of 62%. After processing and de-boning, approximately 637 pounds of meat will be wrapped for consumption. You will end up with the following: 395 lbs of Roasts & Steaks & 240 lbs of Ground Beef & Stewing Beef.
WHY BUY LAMB IN BULK??
Sourcing local, fresh lamb is not easy as much is imported from Australia & New Zealand. The prices quoted below are fresh, not frozen Alberta Lamb.

For approximately $300.00 less than at the grocery store you can support a young entrepreneur and know EXACTLY where your food is raised and what it was fed. You’d also be supporting a local butcher and have the meat cut to your exact specifications. Once you taste this high-quality locally grown lamb, there is no going back.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DLMS FARM GATE TIMED AUCTION WITH EXTENDED BIDDING
1.Visit dlms.ca and follow the link to the DLMS FarmGate timed auction site www.farmgatetimedauctions.ca, click the LOGIN/REGISTRATION button. First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page. Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. This program will send you text and email messages whenever there is activity on your favorite lots or someone challenges your proxy bid and this is why you will be asked for both your current email and cell phone number. If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions simply enter your user name and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.
2. You can choose your favourite lots in this sale at this time and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favorite lots on your screen Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favorite list you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity.
3. The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This in fact protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. If the lot has a $3.00/lb bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $5.00/lb into the system, the computer will bid $3.25/lb for you but if some one else bids $3.50/lb, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $3.75/lb. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $5.00/lb. If another bidder is on at $5.00/lb, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest.
4. At closing time of the sale the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale In Most cases the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time the computer will declare the sale finished.
5. Following the sale the Owner or Sale Manager will invoice all buyers in the sale, please contact the seller with questions or to arrange delivery, pick up or shipping of your purchases. For more info and assistance with bidding contact any of the sale contacts listed on the DLMS Website; DLMS FarmGate Timed Auctions ~ Mark Shologan Ph: 780-699-5082
Frequently Asked Questions:
WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE? Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.
HOW WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK? When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.
