Typically 4-H members research current market prices, as well as retail grocery store prices. They usually consult with a mentor, which could be a parent, a producer they look up to, or their 4-H leader. Using these factors, they calculate a price on their home-raised beef that is a fair premium for the quality of beef they have raised.
The 4-H program is designed to foster confidence, competency, and hands-on skill development in youth. The 4-H members must keep detailed records on the feeding & health of their project(s), participate in public speaking & community volunteer initiatives each year.
The 4-H program promotes the "learn to do by doing" mindset in youngsters. The process of selecting, caring for, & raising these animals to the best of their ability is the sole job of the 4-H youth, who range in age from 9 - 21 years. Through mentors they discover what cattle like to eat & what makes their animal most comfortable (large pen size, clean bedding, feed variety are examples) & how to train these animals to follow a lead, have a bath & learn to accept pets & scratches from their human caretakers. Raising a 4-H project animal is hard work! 4-H members start a market beef project in October & typically finish in May or June.

Hi, I'm Clara and this is my 10th year as a 4-H member. This year my steer is Kodiak, out of my 2022 Grand Champion Female cow. He is a very quiet steer that likes to eat.
Kodiak & I are going to be doing daily laps around the hay field to maintain his muscle tone. My favorite part of 4-H has been judging. I have participated in many competitions & reached my goal in 2022 by winning the Calgary Region Champion Senior Judge. I am going to Mount Royal University this fall to pursue a Degree in Communications with a major in Public Relations.
I would like to thank The Macleod Family for purchasing my steer last year.

My name is Jessie and I have been part of 4-H for eight years. Kubo is an impressive steer out of a very easygoing ex 4-H cow. I have spent a lot of time getting him to lead and keep him looking his best. I also have a Provincial Carcass Steer Project this year, I am learning more about giving my buyers a superior product. I enjoy 4-H a lot because of the opportunities it has given me and all the great people I have been able to meet. I hope that this year will bring new people into the experience and grow our club.
I would like to thank my repeat buyer, Mike Carson of International Crane and Hoist for not only purchasing my steer last year, but for many years previous.

He has style, length and is being fed to be exceptionally finished, so his flavor of meat will certainly pack a punch! So fire up your BBQ's! r of Millarville Stockland Beef. I have been a 4-H member for 9 years, having projects in horsemanship, archery and canine. I have found that I really enjoy working around cattle and look forward to continue to develop my skills. Overall, Kevin had been a great steer to work with. Thank you so much to the Blatz family for letting me purchase him. I have been impressed by his weight gain and how well he has done. I would also like to thank my buyers Marci and Donna for their purchase of my steer last year! I appreciate your support!

d so much and grown into a great volunteer because of it. I’ve done a variety of projects in 4-H from archery to horse to photography and of course beef! I am an ambassador for the Calgary 4-H Region and I get to mentor kids all across the province. My steer this year is Kamikaze, a commercial Black Angus. I’m really excited to see the beef from this calf. His genetics say he should have a great carcass yield (aka lots of beef), with an exceptional Rib Eye area (a prime cut) and fantastic marbling (read extra tender). A huge thank you to PMO Global Services for buying my steer last year. It was great to know that so many of your staff members got to enjoy some great 4-H Beef.

Hi my name is Lilah-May Stone I am 12 years old. This is my 1st year being a part of the Millarville Stockland 4-H Beef Club. I chose my Steer Kyle because his mother is our pet cow and is really quiet . I named him Kyle because I thought that Kyle suited him. I like being a part of 4-H because it is an experience a lot of kids don't get the opportunity to be a part of. I am grateful for the opportunity that 4-H gives me, such as learning how to clip cows, how to public speak and much more. A lot of people would not have the chance to participate is these activities without 4-H.

I am graduating from high school this year, and heading to SAIT in the fall to get my carpentry ticket. Hopefully I can co-ordinate school, work and 4-H into my schedule this fall. hasing my steer last year.

Hi, my name in Maddie Watkins. I have been in 4-H for 9 years . I really appreciate and enjoy the opportunities as well as experiences that 4-H has offered me. I have made many amazing friends and learned so much about the cattle industry. All the information I have come across in 4-H will assist me for the rest of my life. The steer that I have this year is named Kornelius. He was part of my cow calf project last year and I choose to make him my steer for this year. I am very happy with how he is coming along. He did very well at the Chinook Junior Stock show. I am very exited to get him back in the show ring at Achievement day! I would like to add a very special thank you to the French Family for purchasing my Reserve Grand Champion Steer at 4-H on Parade last year. They have been amazing supporters of our club and my 4-H journey, I am so grateful.

1.Visit dlms.ca and follow the link to the DLMS FarmGate timed auction site www.farmgatetimedauctions.ca, click the LOGIN/REGISTRATION button. First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. This program will send you text and email messages whenever there is activity on your favorite lots or someone challenges your proxy bid and this is why you will be asked for both your current email and cell phone number If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions simply enter your user name and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.
2. You can choose your favourite lots in this sale at this time and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favorite lots on your screen. Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favorite list you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity.
3. The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This in fact protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500 If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest.
4. At closing time of the sale the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale. In Most cases the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time the computer will declare the sale finished.
5 Following the sale the Owner or Sale Manager will invoice all buyers in the sale, please contact the seller with questions or to arrange delivery, pick up or shipping of your purchases. For more info and assistance with bidding contact any of the sale contacts listed on the DLMS Website; DLMS FarmGate Timed Auctions ~ Mark Shologan Ph: 780-699-5082
WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE? Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.
HOW WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK? When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in
