Tidal Weavers: Islands Exchange

Whether ocean, strait or stream, water is not merely a connector of lands, but a living presence that moves with memory and labour, carrying traces of migrations, trade, rituals and kinship. Similarly, textile is not only a cultural artefact, but also a mobile, tactile archive threaded with the everyday, the sacred and the collective.

Tidal Weavers unfolds as a process and generative space of shared memory and interwoven knowledge. Central to it is an artist exchange between grassroots organisations across Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan to cultivate mutual learning and long-term collaboration. Artists, weavers, researchers and community members dwell and work together in immersive settings. Through conversations, shared meals, daily routines and collaborative making, friendships grow and shape the artworks as much as the materials themselves.

The project offers an ecology of stories, motifs and rhythms that respond to the speci!city of place and the generosity of human encounter, emphasising slowness, listening and reciprocity as strategies of artistic and social engagement. It honours people, water, land and textile alike – as carriers of life, of memory, and of the deep ties that bind people across distance.

Seed to Textile 2025: Sara Tse Open Studio

Since 2019, CHAT’s agship community programme Seed to Textile has been acquainting artists and the public with the connections between nature, textiles and art, offering hands-on experiences ranging from farming to gallery practice. This year, Hong Kong artist Sara Tse is invited to explore how nature and textiles weave into people’s memories and, during the process, unravel and reweave communal experiences by collecting oral histories and creating with the public.

Tse has been collecting and documenting the botanical and cultural imprints of her nowdemolished alma mater, Kwai Chung Public School, and its Tsuen Wan neighbourhood since 2015. Based on her collections and research, she led ‘Seeders’ – comprising multi-generational alumni and individuals from the public – to revive the school’s botanical heritage by cultivating common local species that had thrived there. These plants were transformed into natural dyes and !bres for various co-creative workshops with public participants, including ceramic making, textile dyeing, cyanotype photography and branch weaving.

At CHAT’s gallery, Tse invites everyone to her open studio and explore the entwined migratory experiences of ora and humanity, the construction of belonging, and the often overlooked and vanishing narratives around us.

In the industrial era of Hong Kong, textile products ranging from cones of yarn to !nely knitted shirts were sold widely within the city and abroad to manufacturers, wholesalers and individual consumers. Accompanying these Hong Kong products were boxes and labels printed or woven with iconic designs, each shaped by unique aesthetic, linguistic and economic circumstances. They are evidence of the city’s industrial development and circulation. Through textile packaging and ads, this display visualises Hong Kong’s relationship with domestic and international markets from the post-war period to the 1980s, while exploring the themes of exchange and visual culture.

Embroidery, beading, drawnwork – these intricate tasks were once skilfully carried out by many of our older generations. Upon closer look, they also illustrate the defining qualities of commercial craft production and circulation in 20th-century Hong Kong, such as systematisation of skilled work, female labour and leadership, adaptation for export markets, and alienation between makers and consumers.

Busy Needles examines embroidery materials from Maryknoll Convent School Foundation, drawnwork from Swatow that circulated through Hong Kong, beadwork and its cottage industry, traditional kwan kwa marriage gowns and more, at the same time encouraging alternative and personal views of craft in Hong Kong.
