In her book Installation Art , art historian and critic Claire Bishop defines installation art and historises it in relation to art movements such as Dadaism, Surrealism and Minimalism.

She describes the art form as follows:

Installation art creates a situation into which the viewer physically enters, and insists that you regard this as a singular totality. Rather than imagining the viewer as a pair of disembodied eyes that survey the work from a distance, installation art presupposes an embodied viewer whose sense of touch, smell and sound are as heightened as their sense of vision. This insistence on the literal presence of the viewer is arguably the key characteristic of installation art. 1 Kingsley Ng’s body of works can be seen in this light. Many of his works envelope visitors in darkness and then immerse them in sound and light. Unconsciously, visitors sharpen their perception, reassuring themselves of their own presence in the theatrical and ephemeral environment. ‘Musical’, ‘chime’, ‘requiem’, ‘etudes’ – these words in the titles of Ng’s past projects evince the importance of

listening in his practice. The process of listening not only evokes emotion but also invites attention to the vulnerable entities around us which are often muffled by loud noises. Ng often says, ‘My work is not a vehicle for my own message, but for the experiences of the viewers.’ He centres on the experience and presence of the individual viewing his art. Rather than provoke or disturb, the devices and settings employed by Ng lead to reflection and contemplation. In this way, he embraces the fluidity and individuality of the visitors’ interpretations and understandings.

In his solo exhibition at CHAT, Listen to the Sound of the Earth Spinning , Ng constructed an immersive soundscape where visitors could listen to the spinning of the threads of life by humans and animals and the weaving of the fabric of this planet. He drew on the textile heritage and new meanings tied to The Mills, where CHAT is housed. The Mills, once the spinning factory complex of Nan Fung Textiles, is now known as a pet-friendly cultural hub. When creating the newly commissioned artwork Globes , Ng used textile materials and tools to evoke an expanded imagination of the Earth – one that transcends

anthropocentrism through the presence of animal companions. He began by listening to personal stories about people and their animal companions.

Dog, cat and rabbit owners participated in grooming workshops organised by Ng and CHAT to collect fur from their animals, which was then made into fur balls of different colours and sizes.

In fact, the idea of Globes came from a daily routine of Ng, his partner Stephanie Cheung and their cat Whisky, 16 years old at the time of the exhibition. The couple have been grooming Whisky every day and, over time, the fur gathered piled into a ball the size of a terrestrial globe. In a sense, the fur ball has been growing in proportion to the years Whisky has lived, and the beloved cat has been gradually transforming into a globe.

The concept of Ng’s exhibition as a whole also owes heavily to Whisky.

When grooming his elderly cat, Ng often reflects on the different lifespans of humans and cats, and the miracle of beings living on different time scales encountering one another and sharing their lives. Therefore, the ‘Earth’ of the

exhibition title does not literally mean the planet Earth but the stories of all living things that dwell here, including the animals which the furry globes of Whisky and other four-legged friends stand for. The title directs our awareness to the presence of non-human species inhabiting the same planet as us.

As Ng ruminates on miraculous encounters between animals and humans, he attempts to poetically connect the micro-experience of individuals and the macro-perspective of the universal logic of time, nature and humanity. His artistic practice continues the threads that have run through the creations of his predecessors, ranging from ink art to light art, seeking to understand the inseparable relationship between humans and nature in time through sensory experience beyond materiality.

Even after the exhibition ended, the sensory experience remains etched in the minds of visitors and continues to invite us to ‘listen to the sound of the Earth spinning’.

毛 髮 梳 理 工 作 坊 毛 毛 球 製 作 工 作 坊

In response to the recognition of 文 創 基 地， 伍 韶 勁 與 項 目 團 隊 於 是 特 意 為 The Mills as a cultural hub that welcomes 寵 物 主 人 構 思 了 兩 個 工 作 坊︒ 他 公 開 招 募 all visitors and animal companions, Ng 了 參 加 者 分 享 有 關 動 物 友 伴 的 故 事， 並 用 and the project team conceived two 寵物毛髮製作毛球︒ workshops for pet owners. In the first workshop, a professional groomer taught participants how to properly brush and collect the hair of dogs, cats and rabbits. The second workshop was led by the felt artist Vivian Hui, and each participant made a unique little felted planet from the collected fur for Ng’s exhibition.

Stories about the animal companions, along with pictures of the corresponding fur balls, were also compiled into a book available for reading in the gallery.

穿 孔 卡 帶 動 音 樂 盒 的 原 理， 跟 雅 卡 爾 織 布 機 編 織 圖 案 的 方 法 同 出 一 轍︒ 穿 孔 卡 的 正 負編碼，也是電腦計算的藍本︒ 這 批 手 造 的 音 樂 盒， 八 年 前 首 演 於 一 個 近 千 人 聚 集 的 劇 院， 寫 上 故 事 的 穿 孔 卡， 讓 來自各方的人，在流光中聆聽彼此︒之後， 它 們 又 到 過 海 港 旁 的 微 觀 汪 洋， 奏 關 於 海 的歌︒ 在 CHAT 六廠，在地球的和弦與生命微小 但踏實的交匯之間，它們靜待到訪的朋友， 迴轉出貫穿展覽的旋律︒

The way a punchcard triggers a music box is similar to the mechanism of a Jacquard loom. Perforated codes were also conceptual precursors to computer programming.

These handcrafted music boxes debuted in a 900-seat auditorium eight years ago.

Punchcards overwritten with stories played tunes for mutual listening in streams of flowing lights. The set later made its way to a miniature ocean by the harbour, where songs of seafarers resounded.

At CHAT, between resonances of the Earth and chords of dearly entangled lives, they awaited visitors to wind melodic threads through the exhibition.

The legend goes that the Cowherd and the Weaver, two lovers separated by the Milky Way, meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month.

However, at the closest, the two stars are still 16.4 light years apart.

By the time the exhibition opened, my cat Whisky had been with me for eight years.

When I eat at home, she shares my chair.

No matter how busy I am, brushing her is a daily ritual. I can never bear to throw away her sheddings. Over time, the fur becomes a grey globe.

Many do the same with their beloved animals.

I thank over a hundred participants who felted furry globes for this work.

Together, we held on to a most precious instant in cosmic time.

《音樂紡織機》是 20 年前，在 Le Fresnoy 法國國立當代藝術工作室的畢業作品︒ 工作室的成立，有振興頹落小鎮的想像︒當 時 我 疑 問， 這 座 設 備 無 與 倫 比 的 當 代 藝 術 學院，對當地人來說是怎樣一回事︖ 工 業 革 命 期 間， 法 國 北 部 曾 經 是 輝 煌 的 紡 織 重 鎮︒ 在 學 院 支 持 下， 我 從 博 物 館 接 收 了一部有 250 年歷史的雅卡爾織布機︒ 已不能操作的古物加上光敏器材和編碼，成 為 以 光 影 奏 樂 的 樂 器︒ 展 出 時， 當 地 人 用 熟練的手，在靜止的棉線上織出音樂︒ 之 後， 紡 織 機 到 過 多 處 展 出， 再 上 一 次 是

Musical Loom was my graduation work at Le Fresnoy – National Studio of Contemporary Arts, 20 years ago.

and shade. When it was exhibited, locals wove music on the static threads with their seasoned hands.

The founding of the studio was part of a scheme to revitalise the desolate town. I always wondered, what would locals think about this state-of-the-art institution?

The Loom toured a good number of places, and its last trip was in 2018.

Opening the crate after six years, some white threads have rusted. The computers also looked like archaeological finds from prehistoric time.

During the Industrial Revolution, northern France was once a glorious stronghold of textile production. With the Studio’s support, I got hold of a 250-yearold Jacquard loom from a museum.

The work first appeared as Etudes for the 21st Century . Turning the optical phenomenon of the persistence of vision into an artistic medium, an oscillating string becomes a fleeting screen. On its evanescence, projected imagery resists effacement in time. My thinking back then was: when images come and go at accelerated speed, what vanishes?

What persists?

crisscrossing with the flickering warps in Moirai , unfolded a space of solemn listening. Three songs weaving through this exhibition, punctuated with fragments from related texts, played in recurring cycles. Between the music of the spinning wheel, the murmurs of a tranquil lake and the tinkles of the galaxy, what dwells within reverberates in the flow of time.

Revisiting the work after 11 years, we let go of all figurative imagery. Nonetheless, the string still swung with all its might. This vibrating weft, imaginarily Thanks to Agnes Lin and the Osage Art Foundation for supporting the production of Etudes for the 21st Century .

In 1952, German physicist Winfried Otto Schumann figured out the Earth’ s natural resonances by calculation. Distinct peaks are marked at 7.83, 14.3, 20.8, 27.3 and 33.8 Hz. The Schumann Resonances are used in climatic and geophysical observations.

Looking upon the sky, 33.8 Hz is also close to the frequency of a cat’s purr.

Preparing for this exhibition has been akin to threading through a starry night. This exhibition is made possible by the stars – countless individuals and institutions that formed the constellations.

I would like to thank all participants of the project Globes for sharing precious stories with their animal companions.

Felt artist Vivian Hui, who ran workshops and cared for the materials, graced our participatory project with both her craft and passion.

With many collaborators, our relationship spans years. Jason Wong offered ingenious technical solutions and suggestions for every minute detail.

Lee Chi Wai’ s modest and graceful lighting design achieves more with less.

Sound designer Anthony Yeung used his ultra-sensitive ears to mix and master, creating a space bathed in high-fidelity sound. Production manager Tsang Wang Shun Winson ensured our plans were met, balancing wild creativity with time and budget. Lam Lui Kong Roy, still photographer of Globes , conveyed the gentlest affection in high-quality images.

Zoe Hong handled the collection of fur balls with great care. Yiu Ming Shan Felix attended to the ropes that make up Moirai with rigorous precision. Respected carpenter Lam Che, who crafted the exquisite music boxes of Listening Time, helped repair the antique loom. Jessie Coo oversaw the orchestration of audiovisual materials. Stephanie Cheung

synthesised my thoughts and research into beautiful writing; she also took care of every aspect of the production and beyond, reminding me that artmaking is not merely about creating works but also meaningful processes. Lastly, I would like to thank my family and our cat Whisky, who has provided so much inspiration.

The exhibition could not have happened without the support of various organisations. Agnes Lin and the Osage Art Foundation have provided the most generous support over the years. Le Fresnoy – National Studio of Contemporary Arts, where Musical Loom was conceptualised and produced, was extremely influential to my development.

La Manufacture Roubaix (formerly Musée du Jacquard) provided the historical loom from its collection. The Make a Difference Institute commissioned the debut of Listening Time , whose components have evolved in many subsequent projects. The Academy of Visual Arts, School of Creative Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University allows me to grow together with colleagues and many exciting young talents.
