sums up Ferguson; Ê Thomson hopes for shot at title

, *",/\ By Art Garcia The UFC returns to Valley View Casino as former two-time UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir and Todd Duffee headline UFC Fight Night 72 on July 15. One of the more intriguing bouts of the night will be in the lightweight division, as former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson, currently ranked No. 7 in the UFC, battles No. 12-ranked Tony Ferguson. Hoping for another title shot, the 36-yearold Thomson was gracious enough to answer a few questions. Art Garcia Jr.: What do you know about Tony Ferguson, and how excited are you to be fighting him? Josh Thompson: I don’t know anything about him… I think he’s Mexican. He’s probably about 5’10” or 5’11”; — other than that I don’t know anything about him. I have no idea who he is. Never actually heard of him, to be honest. I think he fought in L.A. on the same card that Koshchek fought Ellenberger, but that’s about as much as I know. AG: I read where Tony said you are disrespecting him by calling out higher-ranked fighters and not, in his opinion, focusing enough on your fight with him. Your thoughts? JT: (Laughs) Anytime you have

a chance or a potential opportunity where Joe Silva calls me and asks if I can make the weight to fight someone who is higher ranked, and I said, “Yes I could.” So the fact that the fight wasn’t

given to me, that’s really none of Tony’s business or his concern. I couldn’t care less what Tony thinks. I mean, I was looking to fight (Donald) Cerrone, and I asked for anyone else who is ranked

higher and that was it. Anybody would want to fight a higher-ranked person, especially of the fact that I never heard of Tony Ferguson himself. THOMSON, cont’d. on Page 18

Asks NBA star Curry to stay away Steph Curry is one of the most inspirational players in the NBA. The newly-crowned Western Conference champion is a humble leader, a family man, a team player whose work ethic is second-to-none. It was that work ethic that allowed him to rise from the ranks of the littleknown high school player to NBA MVP. And it’s that work ethic, and his per-

Coming to poor high schools like mine isn’t going to help any of these kids out, in fact, it might make things worse. There is no indication that the NBA is actually trying to send Curry or his teammates to the school. Regardless, Amaral hopes the league never will. He goes on to explain his reasoning. “If you come to my school you will be your usual inspiring, humble, hilari-

Matt Amaral is a lifelong Warriors fan. He loves the team, and he loves Curry. But given the opportunity to have Curry visit Mt. Eden High School in Hayward, Calif., he says he’d rather not. “I have to ask you to do me a solid and make sure you don’t ever come visit my high school,â€? Amaral writes in a blog post directed to Curry. “When you get involved in soup kitchens, wrap Christmas presents for needy kids, and build homes for the homeless I am inspired. But where those kinds of civic-minded activities have clear benefits, I have to tell you something you probably haven’t heard:

ous, kind self and you will say all the right things. ... I mean, you are such an awesome guy, you are a family man with a wife and daughter, with another on the way. ... You are humble, a leader, and clearly our young men need to meet a man like you. Maybe I’m wrong to write this letter. “But the reason I don’t want you to come has to do with what you won’t say...Because the worst thing you won’t tell them Steph, is that they can’t do it. You won’t tell them that will you? You won’t be able to bring yourself to tell them it is already too late. ... You see, the kids I am talking about do not play year-round, they are not in a traveling league, and they have never even CURRY, cont’d. on Page 19

By Doug Aguillard ften called the “Four acres of American Sovereignty,” an American aircraft carrier can bring many different emotions to people and governments around the world when one shows up offshore of a foreign country. Responding to emergencies such as earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons among others, she can be the bearer of life. To a war-torn country, she can mean freedom has arrived. To an enemy, she means diplomacy might be a better choice for them. Along with a carrier, other ships are always deployed in support of the carrier. This includes two Ticonderoga-class Aegis guided missile cruisers, four Arleigh Burke-class Aegis guided missile destroyers, one nuclearpowered attack Submarine and a supply ship.

She’s a city of 5,000 sailors equipped with almost every thing they need to make long deployments bearable. But

most important, she is a warship in a sense. She doesn’t carry offensive weapons herself, like a cruiser or de-

She is an operational naval aviation organization composed of several aircraft squadrons and detachments of various types of aircraft, both fixed- and rotary-winged. Organized, equipped and trained to conduct modern aviation operations while embarked aboard aircraft carriers, the various squadrons in an air wing have different, complementary (and sometimes overlapping) missions, and provide most of the striking power and electronic warfare capabilities of a carrier strike group. What does the Stennis have that can bring fear into an enemy eyes? It is her air wing. Ninety-plus planes and helicopters. These aircraft are from Carrier Air-Wing 9, based out of NAS LeMoore in California’s Central Valley, NAS Point Mugu and NAS North Island. The modern U.S. Navy carrier air wing consists of: Four Strike Fighter (VFA) Squadrons with 12 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets; or 10 F/A-18C Hornets. SPECIALS ÂœĂ•Ă€ĂŠ>ViĂƒĂŠÂˆÂ˜ĂŠ,i˜œ By Howard Hian There are times when a travel story meshes perfectly with a favorite pastime. So it was on a recent trip to Reno, Nev., the “Biggest Little City in the World.â€? The visit included stays at the Atlantis, Peppermill, Eldorado and Grand Sierra Resorts; all four star, full-service properties. Best of all, I played in each poker room’s daily nolimit hold ’em tournament. My first scheduled game was at the Atlantis. The poker room manager is Keith Dames, a poker aficionado who also writes a gaming column. The setting is comfortable, with tableside dining and a self-service soup and beverage bar. I managed a 7th place finish and headed to the Manhattan Deli to celebrate with a giant sandwich that was equal to anything served in New York City. I finished the afternoon with a relaxing massage at its fabulous, awardwinning spa. Later, I dined at the Atlantis Steakhouse, which was recently voted the Best Overall Steakhouse in the Reno-Tahoe area. The next day I was off to the Peppermill for breakfast at Biscotti’s, then the noon tournament. “Poker Digestâ€? rated the Peppermill’s poker room one of the “Top 25 in the USA.â€? Mike Nelson runs the show. There is a self-service soup and beverage bar for players. I had another final table finish (7th). “The outcome of a hand is not indicative of how you played,â€? Nelson reassured me. One can play well and still lose. That evening, the Four Diamond Bimini Steakhouse lived up to its reputation — great drinks and top quality beef. On the move again, I had breakfast at the Eldorado’s classic diner, Mil-

Heintz holds a special place in gambling history as the first woman dealer at the World Series of Poker. She was inducted into the Women in Poker Hall of Fame in 2011. I played in the tournament and moved up a notch, finishing 6th. The Eldorado buffet offers extensive food and salad choices, but the ""1 STATION AND GELATO BAR WERE MY favorites. Later that evening, I enjoyed “Madame Houdini in the showroom. Morning at the Grand Sierra Resort began with breakfast in the Grand Cafe, followed by a rejuvenating massage at their tranquil spa. Fed and relaxed, I headed to the tournament, where the affable circuit ring winner Charles Williams manages the poker room. There, I had my best finish of the RENO, cont’d. on Page 20

YOU SERVED. YOU EARNED.

By Norman L Macht Money is not the root of all evil. But money — the earning, spending, saving, investing of it — is the root of plenty of worry, stress, argument, dreams and sleepless nights. Some people even dread just talking about finances. They’d rather spend an hour talking to a dentist’s drill than to a financial adviser. All this over something we all need and want, but which in itself has no value. A dollar bill is nothing but a piece of special paper with an odd collection of pictures and symbols printed in a special kind of ink. You can’t eat it, wear it, use it for heat or light. There’s a Native American proverb: “Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. Money gets its value only from what it can be exchanged for. That’s where inflation comes in. But that’s a topic for another day. This column will not deal with the earning or spending of money. Investing your savings is our beat. Not stock trading or speculating. Trying to time the market is a fool’s game. There are plenty of heavily-touted trading sys-

tems out there. They come and go. Their underlying truth is: All systems work sometimes; no system works all the time. Forget it. Nor will we offer specific recommendations of individual stocks or bonds. A financial adviser who puts your interests first can do so only after talking to you, learning your individual needs and goals and circumstances, your level of risk tolerance. How would you react if your investments went down in value? Would you panic and want out, or see it as an opportunity and buy more? The world of investing is filled with as many mysterious off-putting acronyms as the armed forces: ETF, REIT, P/E. P/S. P/B. YTM, laddered CDs, DJIA. Confusing, right? Scary? Intimidating? Too much for you? In a way, it’s meant to be. Wall Street wants you to feel lost, helpless, in need of their smarts and advice and management — for a fee, maybe a percentage of your money, usually a continuing fee. We will decipher the financial world’s argot for you. Are money managers smarter than you? More knowledgeable, maybe, but that’s not the same as smarter. Besides, MONEY, cont’d. on Page 17

Despite setbacks, three female Soldiers continue the challenge to make it through Army Ranger School. Those three women were among eight, who were attempting for the second time to pass the first phase of the course, called the “Darby phase.” Of those eight, five were dropped and sent back to their units. The three were recycled back to the beginning of Ranger school in what is known as a “Day One Recycle.” Soldiers, subject to a Day One Recycle, will restart the entire Ranger course, to include repeating the fourday Ranger assessment phase week at Camp Rogers. Of the 19 women, who started Ranger school, April 20, as part of the Ranger Course 06-15, only those three women remain. April 20 was the first time, which women were allowed into the course. The move, to assess female Soldier performance in the Ranger course, is part of an ongoing Army effort called “Soldier 2020.” That effort is meant to allow the Army’s best-qualified Soldiers the opportunity to serve in any position, where they are capable of performing to standard.

CHARLESTON, W. Va. — Jeanette Wright thought she would never see her late brother’s Purple Heart again. “It’s been gone for over 40 years,” said Wright, 84, from her North Charleston home. “The last time I saw it was 1972.” That’s the year Wright left her Lincoln County homeplace near Yawkey and moved to Charleston. When she went back later to retrieve the medal and other items, the Purple Heart was gone. Wright’s brother, Waldo R. Williamson, died during World War II. “Both of my brothers, as soon as they were 18, joined the service,” Wright recalled. In Lincoln County in the late 1930s, there wasn’t much else for a young man to do. Williamson joined the U.S. Navy, and was stationed in the Pacific when war broke out on Dec. 7, 1941. Wright said Williamson served as a quartermaster on the USS Edsall, an old fourstack destroyer built just after World War I and based out of Manila, in the Philippines. In February 1942, the Edsall was ordered to join the destroyer USS Whipple and escort the old aircraft carrier USS Langley on a trip to deliver P-40 NEWS BRIEFS, cont’d. on Page 24

STS is a San Diego-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that rescues shelter dogs and trains them as psychiatric service dogs for post 9/11 U.S. combat veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Every day on average, an estimated 22 U.S. veterans and one active duty service member commit suicide, according to the Department of Veteran Affairs. In the past year alone, the number of diagnosed cases of PTSD in the military jumped 50 percent, and this represents cases that have been diagnosed. Studies estimate that one in every five military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan is suffering from PTSD. In addition, every 11 seconds, a shelter animal is euthanized in the U.S. In response, Griffin Funding has made a commitment to fund the cost of rescuing, training and partnering three shelter dogs with combat veterans suffering from invisible wounds through STS in 2015. “Griffin Funding has been supporting STS’s efforts since 2014 and I wholeheartedly support their mission,â€? said Griffin Funding CEO William Lyons. “This year, we’ve stepped

Warhawk fighter planes from Australia to the island of Java. In those desperate first months of the war, Allied forces in the Pacific needed every plane they could get. Japanese bombers caught the Langley on Feb. 27, setting the ship on fire and forcing the crew to abandon ship. The survivors were taken aboard the Whipple and Edsall, which ferried them to Christmas Island. On March 1, 1942, the Edsall ran into a Japanese navy task force that included two aircraft carriers, two battleships and two heavy cruisers, all of which greatly out-gunned the Edsall. Wright was 11 at the time, and Williamson was just 21 years old. The Japanese pummeling the Edsall with bombs as she drew closer to the

Japanese ships. Now dead in the water, she was finished off by the battleships and cruisers, finally going down about 430 miles south of Java. “He went down with the ship, as far as I know, Wright said. Williamson initially was listed as missing in action, then declared dead, and posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. For years, Wright’s family kept the medal — until it was stolen from their homeplace. But Sally Jarrett, a die-hard auctiongoer in Charleston, found the medal recently while going through some old boxes she had bought over the years. Determined to find Williamson’s rightful heirs and return the medal, she contacted the newspaper. “We think it’s a miracle, Wright said after receiving the long-lost medal. “I’ve longed for it over the years. It just brings me joy.

months without a port call by the time of my visit, and yet, every sailor I spoke with was happy and motivated. They were tired and ready to head home, to be sure, but their dedication was something to behold. Their smiles and laughter when in small groups were heart warming as they went through their day and night work load. We then went back down to the flight deck. At one point, I asked to go up to “Vultures Row, a viewing gallery on an aircraft carrier’s tower where a person may watch the operations on the flight deck. So named because it provides a strategic vantage point for the (usually non-participatory and/or non-flying) viewer to pick out supposed faults for later heckling or criticism. The sun was setting in the west, and the light from the sun with clouds helped break up the light. Planes continued to land, when suddenly there they were two humpback whales swimming along side the carrier. We could see their blows as they came up for air. Also seen from the tower was a small pod of common dolphins surfing and jumping in the ships wake. We then went down to the mess deck to have dinner, before going back to Vulture’s Row for night operations. As night fell and the lights went dark on the flight deck, the air operations continued. I am always amazed that they can land these planes during the daylight, but to land in almost complete darkness just is mind blowing. Yes, I know they have night vision cameras to help the pilots, and the plane can almost land itself with it’s modern computers. But still, to see a fighter jet, or any aircraft, land on a flight deck at night is a heroic feat. It finally got to the point where photography was pointless and we were exhausted from all of the climbing on the ladder wells (stairs) and walking up and down the flight deck. Our state rooms were extremely nice, and we were able to watch the flight ops through closecircuit television in out rooms. The next morning I was up by 8 a.m. to get some breakfast and tour the ship before our Greyhound would launch off of the carrier and take us back to NAS North Island. We were able to tour the hanger area, the weapons magazine, the fan-tail and where they test the aircraft engines for maintenance. Again, I was able to spend quality time with the sailors, both junior and upper ranks of the enlisted, and I will tell, I am proud of these people who have volunteered to served their country and our Navy. For the last few hours we were surprised to be able to go back up onto the flight deck and photograph more launches and recoveries, as it was not on our agenda for the morning. We finally boarded our plane to take us home, and the flight was smooth from launch to landing at North Island. I got my bags and said goodbye to some newly found friends, before heading home. I want to thank everyone who made this story possible. The entire Public Affairs for Naval Air Forces at NAS North Island, Capt. Wettlaufer and the entire crew(s) of the U.S.S. John C. beautiful song? “I call it ‘Drop Them Panties Momma, I’m Gonna do ya all Night Long.’ A bit stunned, the bartender said, “Interesting title, do you have another? The old man nodded and broke into a foot-stomping, honky-tonk piece that brought the patrons to their feet. They clapped along until it was finished, broke into thunderous applause when he finished and filled his tip mug to overflowing. “You are amazing, exclaimed the barkeep. “Just amazing! What do you call that one? “Oh, that’s a little ditty I call ‘I Wanna Spank yer Bare Butt, Baby, Till you Scream and Holler.’ Then he rose, excused himself and shuffled off to use the restroom. While he was gone, the patrons begged the bartender to give the eccentric old musician the job. So, when the old man returned, the barkeep said, “Mister, you are the greatest piano player I’ve ever heard. If you want the job, it’s yours. Suddenly, the barkeep noticed that the man had not finished his trip back from the restroom. Not wanting to embarrass the old fellow, he leaned toward him and whispered, “Sir, do you know your thing’s hanging out for all the world to see? “Know it? the geezer grinned. “Hell, I WROTE IT!

A sign in the window of a bar advertised for a piano player, and one day a scroungy-looking old guy entered the bar asking about the job. The bartender was put off by the man’s looks, but pointed him to the piano in the corner. As the old man began to play, the room was filled with the most beautiful music anyone in the bar had ever heard. When the music ended, the patrons leaped to their feet; yelling and applauding wildly. “Hey, Old Timer, said the barkeep. “You’re really good. What was that

Cont’d. from Page 6 the successful management of money is really quite simple — suspiciously, deceptively simple. It depends less on intelligence or even knowledge and more on your emotions — primarily discipline, fear and greed. I once had a client who was a successful physician. The market had been going down sharply for a few days. He said to me, “Should I panic? I couldn’t tell him if he should panic. He already had. Overcoming those emotions that work against you will be your biggest challenge for successful saving and investment for the long term.

Cont’d. from Page 2 AG: Tony said your stand up isn’t better than his, and that you will probably “punk out” before the fight. Do you feel he can stand up with you, and if he does, will he be making a mistake? JT: I don’t know. I can’t answer that because I have never seen him fight. AG: Although his record is impressive, he hasn’t fought any of the big names on the big cards that you have. How much of that “big fight” experience gives you an advantage, if it does at all? JT: It really doesn’t mean anything. I mean, we’ve seen no-name guys come in (and win a fight), and the fact that I’ve never seen him fight poses a threat because I don’t know what he can do well. I don’t have a clue. AG: You have had a long, successful career and fought the top names in the world of MMA. At this point of your life, do you still train the same or do you give your body a break now that you’re older and wiser? JT: No, I still train the same, and when my body can’t train the same, then it’s pretty-much time for me to get out. I still train the same. I made

a couple of little changes — not sparring hard three times a week, but I’m sparring hard twice a week doing five rounds with a different guy every round. I’m training hard with big guys because, apparently, Tony’s kind of a bigger lightweight — so obviously I’m working a lot on my grappling with some of the top Jiu-Jitsu guys on our team. It’s been good because I train with (Luke) Rockhold all the time. I train with Jackson Sousa, Leo Vieira… I train with top Jiu-Jitsu guys in the world. Because I don’t know anything about him, anything can happen. I don’t know a thing about him, but people says he’s pretty decent on the ground and he’s a bigger lightweight — so I take a little bit of those things and train with some bigger guys and the top guys. There’s nobody in MMA who’s as good as guys like Leo Vieira, Jackson Sousa and Lucas Lynch. There’s nobody in the world as good as those guys, not in the JiuJitsu world, so I’m not really thinking a whole lot about what he does well. I’m just focusing on making sure I have the right people around me to help me train. AG: Have you ever hit someone with what you thought might be a knockout

18 June 15, 2015 THE MILITARY PRESS

punch, only to have him laugh at you like it was nothing? JT: No, because generally the ones where you knock someone out you don’t feel. I’ve got to say that after going back and watching the Nate Diaz fight, he took a square shin-kick to the head and he still didn’t go down, and I had to hit him two more times. So going back and watching it, that kind of shocked me and pretty much let me know that any punch I land on him wasn’t going to drop him — so it was good that the kick landed. AG: Who has hit you the hardest? JT: Most of the guys who have hit me the hardest have been in the gym. As far as in a fight, I would have to say Gray Maynard — he’s probably the hardest hitter I’ve ever been hit by in my life. He’s a piece, and definitely the hardest hitter I’ve been around. AG: Prediction for the fight? JT: Just a win. I’ve heard a lot about how he’s tough, kind of big for the weight and he’s got some decent grappling, I guess. So, just to win the fight — that’s pretty much my prediction. Ringside: Having fought three classic battles with former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez, Thomson ranked “El Nino” as

probably the toughest opponent he’s faced. “I think in the second fight, Gil was probably the toughest guy I ever fought,” Thomson said. “He came out with a game plan, and you could tell by the way his mind set was, he was focused and that was probably the toughest fight I’ve ever had.” In their first fight in 2008, Thomson won the Strikeforce Lightweight Championship by unanimous decision. In their two successive fights, Melendez took the title from Thomson by unanimous decision in 2009 and retained the belt with a split decision victory over Thomson in 2012.

Cont’d. from Page 3 heard of a McDonald’s All-American; they just eat McDonald’s two meals a day and have Hot Cheetos in between.â€? In his school, most of the students don’t have back-up plans, he writes. If they meet Curry and believe they, too, can become NBA stars, they’ll likely ditch any other options. He wants them to be realistic. They are already very good at dreaming about being rich and famous, what we need them to do is get a little more realistic about what is in their control. We need less of an emphasis on sports and celebrity in high school, because it is hurting these kids too much as it is. He’s right to say that most kids, if they are not playing a sport by the time they’re in high school, have a very small chance of going pro in that sport. While it might sound like he’s counting his kids out, he’s really just a concerned teacher trying to encourage them to consider all of their options — especially those beyond going pro. “Steph,â€? he writes, “you and I know they have a better chance of winning the lottery, but no one seems to tell them these things but me.â€? Cont’d. from Page 5 week — 4th. Lunch was at the Cantina. Super margaritas and table-side guacamole rule here. Evening found me dining at the iconic Charlie Palmer restaurant, followed by cocktails and music at LEX, Grand Sierra’s high-energy nightclub. More than $50 million has been spent remodeling the resort, and it shows. Closing Thoughts: I’ve only skimmed the surface of what these resorts have to offer. There’s a huge range of casino action, restaurants, bars, clubs, convention/ meeting space and leisure time activities. Regarding the tournaments — four final tables in four days — it was an amateur’s dream. These resorts certainly deserve their title, “Four Aces in Reno.â€? For more information about them, go to www.PokerResortsReno.com. Coming soon: the Poker Resorts Reno app which will include four $10 coupons for various casino/resort discounts plus my “Poker Tutorial: Omaha 101.â€? Stay tuned!
