End the Air Show? Grow up
’46–’16
W
ar is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of a moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse, wrote political philosopher John Stuart Mill in the 19th century. “A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight — nothing he cares about more than his own safety — is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. The “miserable creature has reared its ugly head once more in the form of the San Diego Veterans for Peace. The group has launched an effort to end the Miramar Air Show within the next five years because it supposedly “promotes war and teaches our children that “military action is a solution to our problems. Instead of showcasing our military might, wrote Veterans for Peace member Dave Patterson in the Union-Tribune, “We need our youth thinking out of the box if we hope that they will get us out of this cycle of endless war. Oh, to live in such delusion. Yes, we should teach our children peace. We should also get a solid eight hours of sleep each night, drive within the speed limit and eat five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. But that’s not reality. There are, and always have been, forces against peace — no matter how many times Patterson and his buddies sing “Kumbaya in a drum circle. Despite our best efforts to “think out of the box and create a peaceful world, the likes of Adolf Hitler, Slobodan Milosevic and Osama bin Laden still exist. AIR SHOW, continued on Page 12

s the Blue Angels roar into San Diego this month for the MCAS Miramar Air Show, the Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team is celebrating its 70th year in flight. At the end of World War II, Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz ordered the formation of a flight demonstration team “to keep the public interested in naval aviation, according to the official record. In fact, the Navy wanted to generate public and political support for a larger allocation of the shrinking defense budget. Having defeated the Axis, the Navy brass was now turning its sights on a different kind of adversary — the Air Force. Lt. Cmdr. Roy M. “Butch Voris knew that the Air Force would soon become an independent service branch and would enjoy support on Capitol Hill at budget

time. When the Navy tasked Voris to assemble and train a flight demonstration team, it picked the right man. A seven-kill air ace who treasured his personal recipe for “Tennessee Hog Heaven Pork Barbecue, Voris was even-tempered, cool-headed, and a demanding taskmaster. “He was a good guy: pleasant, cheerful, approachable, said biographer Barrett Tillman. “He enjoyed telling stories about others more than about himself. Voris launched his team with F6F-5 Hellcats. The robust Hellcat was the fighter that had beaten the air arm of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the Pacific. The team made its first appearance May 10, 1946. Within months of launching the asyet unnamed team, which initially made about a dozen appearances, Voris learned that the lighter, potentially more ma-

With the same engine, but weighing about two-thirds as much as a Hellcat, the Bearcat was ideal to demonstrate maneuverability. The F8F-1 became the team’s aircraft on Aug. 25, 1946. One of the team members visited New York and dined at a nightclub called the Blue Angel: The team now had a name. An attempt by the Navy at an earlier juncture to label them the Blue Lancers had gotten nowhere. On Sept. 29, 1946, Lt. J.G. Ross “Robby Robinson failed to recover from a dive in his F8F-1, crashed, and was killed. He was the first of 27 fatalities in the Blue Angels’ 70-year history. In 1947, Lt. Cmdr. the Way. It is a day locked into American history when President John F. Kennedy was murdered by an assassin’s bullet. Swiftly, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson is taken back to Washington, D.C., and on the flight he is sworn in as the 36th president of the United States. Stepping into the Oval Office, President Johnson (Bryan Cranston) takes in his surroundings. The weight is heavy, knowing that he is following in the footsteps of a beloved president yet also knowing what he does from that moment will define who he is as a leader. First lady Bird Johnson (Melissa Leo) is also keenly aware of what has happened, and becomes the strength he needs. Action is all but immediate as the issues before him are the passage of the Civil Rights Act under the watchful eye of

Martin Luther King Jr. (Anthony Mackie). Being disappointed before by politicians, King is deliberately careful in working with the president. Already up in arms are the Southern Democrats, especially when Johnson an-
nounces his plans. President Johnson knows that he needs V.P. Hubert Humphrey (Bradley Whitford) in the fold to reach the angered statesmen. From Sen. Richard Russell (Frank Langella) to Rep. Howard Smith (Ken Jenkins) to the every suspicious J. Edgar Hoover (Stephen Root), the deliberate twists and turns that this president makes are essential. Wanting his legacy to mean something, President Johnson’s War on Poverty and the out of control Vietnam War keep him fighting for the American people. I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with director Jay Roach to not only hear about his experience in making “All the Way, but also his own passions about what it means in this election year and the historical underestimating of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Jeri Jacquin: What drew you to the project? Jay Roach: I saw the play a couple of times and was already working with Bryan
[Cranston] on the film “Trumbo. I grew up around the time that LBJ was president and unfortunately most people, and I was one of them, think of him in terms of how unpopular he was during and after the Vietnam War. That was definitely part of who he was, but when I was reminded of the incredible amount of things he did as president and teaming up with Congress and Civil Rights leaders, he changed our country for the better in dozens and dozens of ways. LBJ was as presidential as a person can be which is a great thing and to have the Bluray out now during the election calls to mind, what is presidential? What does that mean to be presidential? Who is really qualified to be president and what does leadership look like? You watch LBJ the first couple of years of his presidency and you will see what being presidential means. A film festival dedicated to the United States Military returns for its second year in San Diego from Sept. 14 to Sept. 18. This year the GI Film Festival San Diego includes documentaries, narratives, shorts and feature length production. Also, there is a Local Film Showcase that features San Diego filmmakers along with San Diego locations and actors. Opening night, Sept. 14, of the festival included the West Coast Premier of the film “USS Indianapolis: The Legacy. This documentary took many, many years to bring together the story of this ship and after surviving attacks and secret missions; their ship would be destroyed by a torpedo attack leaving men floating in the ocean for over five days. Now, survivors tell their own story through photographs and footage that will bring this amazing story of life to the screen. Along with an original score, director Sara Vladic brings this untold story to us all. Thursday, Sept. 15, follows with the three films: “The Unimaginable Journey of Peter Ertel tells the story of a man who was a German soldier during a war against the Jews. “Almost Sunrise is a story of two friends who walk across America to deal with the combat experiences that won’t leave them. The film is a journey of hope and possibilities. Finally, “Remembering Vietnam is a collection of perspectives during this war with “Escape from Firebase Kate, “Tom’s War and “Return to

Also, “Paper Lanterns which is a documentary about the morning in 1945 as two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan and the memories of those, including American POW’s, that survived. Sept. 17 brings three films about Navy heroes with “Frogman and the story of working in secret during Vietnam, “Farewell to Connie as the USS Constellation spent 41 years in service from San Diego Bay and “Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan telling the story of the pilots training program in Chicago during World War II. “How We Heal puts the spotlight on those affected by war with “Tourist as a veteran returns to Vietnam after 45 years to deal with the pain of war, “Living for the Ones Who Can’t tells the story of two Rangers in Iraq, and “The Last Time I Heard True Silence as a soldier tries to find his place in civilian life after returning from Iraq. Obama caps military pay increase
President Barack Obama confirmed plans to cap the military pay raise at 1.6 percent next year, a move which lawmakers and military advocates have already warned will hurt military families’ personal finances. In a letter to Congress, Obama invoked his executive powers to set the pay level at 0.5 percent below the expected increase in private sector wages, which would mark the fourth year in a row troops’ pay hikes failed to keep pace with their civilian peers. The president called the move unfortunate but necessary. “I am strongly committed to supporting our uniformed service members, who have made such great contributions to our nation over more than a decade of war, Obama wrote. “As our country continues to recover from serious economic conditions affecting the general welfare, however, we must maintain efforts to keep our nation on a sustainable fiscal course. “This effort requires tough choices, especially in light of budget constraints. The language is identical to the letter Obama sent to Congress in summer 2015, when he set the military pay raise for this year at 1.3 percent. If it stands, 2017 will mark the seventh consecutive year of military pay hikes below 2 percent. The president’s move is not a surprise, since the White House and Pentagon have been advocating for the 1.6 percent mark since February to preserve funding for other modernization and training priorities. The lower-than-expected raise will save more than $300 million in fiscal 2017 alone, and more than $2.2 billion over the next five years. And Obama’s move does not fully settle the issue of what military pay will be next year. Lawmakers are still fighting over defense funding and authorizations, and could find ways to override his decision. But that appears increasingly unlikely, with the House and Senate defense panels divided over where the extra spending would come from and what other programs would see resulting cuts. House Republicans have advocated using temporary war funds to pay for a larger, 2.1 percent pay raise, but Senate leaders have all but rejected that idea. A 1.6 percent pay increase amounts to a $400 yearly pay boost for most junior enlisted troops and up to $1,500 more in annual pay for mid-career officers. The larger 2.1 percent pay raise would add about $150 a year more than the 1.5 percent amount for most junior enlisted and about $350 annually for midcareer officers. roll maneuvers while remaining in the same formation. Gathering a reputation for its spectacular aerobatic maneuvers the team fought the tendency of the press to call them a “stunt team. In early days, one of the Blue Angels’ goals was to outshine the Air Force, which became an independent service branch on Sept. 18, 1947. Although the Air Force and its predecessor services operated a number of aerobatic teams, the well-known Thunderbirds did not come into existence until May 25, 1953. The Blue Angels flew the F8F-1 Bearcat until a final appearance at Madison, Wis., on Aug. 14, 1949. However, throughout 1949, the team was gradually preparing to transition to the Grumman F9F-2 Panther, the standard Navy jet fighter of the era. Lt. Cmdr. John J. “Johnny Magda joined the team at that time, and became its commander a few months later. A five-kill air ace, Magda had flown at the Battle of Midway and survived a ditching and five days in a life raft. Magda led the
team’s first Panther jet performance at Beaumont, Texas, Aug. 20, 1949. It was a time when jet engines were evolving. Several versions of the Panther were placed on duty with different engines. The Blue Angels’ Panthers dispensed with armament and some other features, reducing their weight to around 14,000 pounds, but Magda and others initially questioned whether jets could be as maneuverable as propeller-driven aircraft. Lt. Cmdr. R.E. “Dusty Rhodes, the team’s third commander in 1949, designed the official Blue Angels insignia. It is nearly identical to the current design. In the cloud in the upper-right quadrant, the aircraft were originally shown heading down and to the right. Over the years, the plane silhouettes have changed with the team’s aircraft. After the Korean War began, the Navy decided to return the Blue Angels to fleet duty. Re-equipped with cannon-armed F9F-2B Panthers, and led by Magda, the team formed the nucleus of fighter squadron VF-191, “Satan’s Kittens, assigned to USS Princeton (CV 37). In a move that has never been repeated by either the Navy or

the Air Force, the Navy sent its flight demonstration team into battle. On March 9, 1951, Magda led a strike against North Korean and Chinese troops. He was making a low-level attack with rockets and guns when gunfire struck his Panther. Magda’s wingmen saw his F9F2B consumed with flames. The pilot managed to get the aircraft out to sea, but it went down in the water and Magda, just 33, was lost. The Navy posthumously awarded him the Navy Cross, the nation’s second-highest award for valor. In October 1951, the Blue Angels be reformed as a flight demonstration team. Voris, now a commander, had been on the verge of retiring, but was brought back to reorganize the team and did so on Oct. 25, 1951. The Blue Angels took up station at Corpus Christi, Texas, which had been their pre-Korea home, and began flying the F9F-5 Panther. On July 7, 1952, two Blue Angels Panthers collided at low level during a demonstration at Corpus Christi. Voris was able to land his badly damaged aircraft but Lt. Bud Wood ejected. He never separated from his seat and was killed on impact. The “Blues, as they were now being labeled in shorthand, made many appearances in the F9F-5, including one at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C., on Armed Forces Day in May 1954. For the first time they appeared with — and
sailors, never unbiased, say they outperformed — the Air Force’s newly formed Thunderbirds, flying F-84G Thunderjets. In more recent years, Pentagon policy was changed to prohibit the two teams performing within 150 miles of each other. For a brief period in late 1954, the Blues operated their first swept-wing aircraft, the F9F-6 Cougar, essentially a Panther with swept wings. Its cockpit was nearly identical to the Panther’s, making transition easy, and the “dash six Cougar actually had better carrier handling characteristics than the Panther. But the F9F-6 had been rushed into service — during the Korean War, the Navy lacked a sweptwing fighter comparable to the Air Force F-86 Sabre or Soviet MiG-15 — and early examples had a variety of minor technical issues, including poor latitudinal and longitudinal control. A modification to control surfaces solved the problem in the fleet, but the Blue Angels reverted to the F9F-5 Panther briefly and in December 1954, began flying the much-modified and more robust F9F-8 version of the sweptwing Cougar. The first Marine Corps pilot, Capt. Chuck Hiett, joined the Blue Angels, and they relocated to their current home at Pensacola, Fla., in 1954. According to an official history of the Blue Angels, in August 1954, “Team leader Lt. Cmdr. Ray Hawkins became the first naval aviator to

survive an ejection at supersonic speeds when his F9F-6 became uncontrollable on a cross-country flight. Looking back, it is easy to wonder how an F9F-6 could have reached supersonic speed. In 1957, the team made the transition to the F11F-1 Tiger. The Tiger was one of the Navy’s first supersonic fighters, but was very much a modest, interim aircraft unlike the F-100 Super Sabre the Air Force’s Thunderbirds were flying. The Blue Angels flew the Tiger in two configurations, the short- and long-nosed models. As the United States became embroiled in Southeast Asia, the Navy resisted any urge to return the Blue Angels to combat status. For reasons unclear, the team stayed with the F-11A Tiger long after it ceased to be an operational fleet warplane. The F-4 Phantom II owned all of the superlatives in the world of the 1960s and it was inevitable, perhaps, that the Blue Angels would make the transition to this new aircraft — following the example of the Air Force Thunderbirds. The Phantom II had been designed as a fleet defense interceptor and was not the easiest machine to fling around the sky, especially in closequarters maneuvers near large crowds. The Blues learned how to perform their act in the Phantom II and embellished it: A favorite maneuver, not possible in previous aircraft, was the “dirty loop, in which a Phantom II took off, left the gear and flaps down, and climbed directly into a loop. At the end of their 1973 season, with Cmdr. Tony Less newly in charge, the
Blue Angels retired their F-4J Phantoms and began training for 1974 with the A-4F Skyhawk, called the “Foxtrot Hotrod by some for its light weight and agility. The change was a reflection of the fuel crisis of the era. Initially, eight A-4Fs were modified for Blue Angels use, with removal of the “humpback avionics pod, installation of a drag chute, a control stick “load feel device, a smoke generator, and a self-contained, foldable cockpit access ladder. On Nov. 8, 1986, marking their 40th an-
niversary, the Blue Angels converted to the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter. As with the Phantom previously, they were again able to perform a slow, high angle of attack “tail sitting maneuver, and to fly the “dirty loop in formation with gear down — a maneuver not performed by the Thunderbirds. Also in 1986, Lt. Cmdr. Donnie Cochran became the Blue Angels’ first African-American aviator; he returned in 1994 to lead the team. As they thrill air show crowds, lure re-
cruits, and showcase naval aviation, the Blue Angels carry on a rich tradition. The squadron’s six demonstration pilots fly the Hornet in about 70 shows at 34 locations throughout the United States each year, where they still employ many of the same practices and techniques used in their aerial displays in 1946. The Blue Angels perform at the MCAS Miramar Air Show Sept. 23 – Sept. 25. For more information and schedules, go to www.miramarairshow.com.

AG: Doug Flutie once told me his size worked to his advantage because the defensive players could never get a solid hit on him. Do you feel being smaller has been an advantage for you? TB: I wouldn’t say it’s been an advantage or disadvantage because there are guys out there bigger, faster and stronger than me, so I’m just going out there to compete — just going out there to play the best of my abilities. But I’m the same way (as Flutie) — just limit the hits on myself because I know my stature is so small. The Endzone: In their 33-27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday, the Chargers made the same fatal mistake they did in their playoff loss to the Patriots in 2007 — namely, getting away from a running game that was working in the first half. On that day, LaDanian Tomlinson, the league MVP, rushed for 123 yards and two scores and caught two passes for 64 more yards. He carried the ball 23 times, but had just
nine carries in the second half. On Sunday, Running Back Melvin Gordon had eight carries for 39 yards and two touchdowns — averaging nearly five yards per carry in the first half. In the second half he had six carries for just 18 yards, no touchdowns and averaging three yards per carry. As for Benjamin, he had just seven receptions for 32 yards and no touchdowns in his Chargers debut. On special teams he returned two punts for seven yards with a 4-yard average. With Keenan Allen being placed on IR due to a torn ACL, all eyes will be placed on Benjamin since he was Telesco’s high-priced, free agent acquisition. “Travis is explosive, said Chargers Head Coach Mike McCoy on the day he was signed. “He’s a playmaker that brings a different dynamic to our team. He was highly productive last season and his speed will be an asset to our offense. We’re also excited for what he can do as a returner. His speed and overall athleticism will help us in both phases. 4FQU 13

bent close to the grave and heard some faint, unrecognizable music coming from the grave. Frightened, the priest ran and got the town magistrate. When the magistrate arrived, he bent his ear to the grave, listened for a moment, and said, “Ah, yes, that’s Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, being played backwards. So the magistrate kept listening; “There’s the Seventh... the Sixth... the Fifth... Suddenly the realization of what was happening dawned on the magistrate; he stood up and announced to the crowd that had gathered in the cemetery, “My fellow citizens, there’s nothing to worry about. It’s just Beethoven decomposing.

the footsteps of someone like President Kennedy, and you show that very well. JR: He was definitely an underdog and people made fun of him being from the South and being a Texan and coming from a poor education. He went to a Texas teachers college instead of a school like the other Ivy Leaguers, but he believed in
the power of Americans teamed up. We team up and we get things done. He believed government was best teaming up to get things done, to accomplish a higher quality of life and to rid the country of injustice as in the Jim Crow Laws. He believed in that. To me that is really important to be reminded that it does take faith in this system and it’s easy to tear it down. One of my favorite quotes in the film is that “Any jackass can tear a house down,

but it takes a carpenter to build one back up.â€? He was a carpenter, but he had faith in building things together, faith in being a team when it could have been easier to divide us by fear and hate. I was saying that LBJ is the anti-Trump because he had faith and knew how to get things done for people. I think LBJ would look at Trump as an amateur. JJ: He had that Texan good-ole-boy way of speaking, and I think that led people to believe that he wasn’t a smart man. JR: He could sneak up on them. They did dismiss and underestimated him. That’s one of the things I love of Bryan Cranston’s portrayal is that he reminds us of how funny LBJ was. We got to listen to hours and hours of tapes of LBJ and the phone calls and such and he was actually hilarious. He could tell pretty dirty jokes and he could also drive you around in a car drinking, drive too fast and act like it’s going to crash in a lake only to discover it was an amphibious car! He would do that to then have a serious conversation once the ice was broken saying things like, “Now how do we get the Civil Rights Act passed?â€? That’s what I loved about his character. JJ: Because Congress thought of him as a certain way, for him to come out and flip the tables on them that said, “Look, I know you’re concerned because it is still the good ole boys club‌â€? but he needed to dodge and weave to get things done. JR: That’s what I think is sad that people devalue experience in politics. He knew that’s how you got things done. He had been a congressman and in the U.S. House of Representatives for a dozen years and a senator for a dozen years, so he knew how to get people to team up and accomplish things. That took dozens of years of experience to know how to make that happen. LBJ was a pro, and I think we need pros in leadership and again that’s why I’m happy the film is coming out on Bluray. We were all committed to show what government can accomplish when people team up and work together. Robert Schenkkan adapted his play, and that is a huge part of the
story – what you do with power when you get it. It’s how you build your strengths and knowledge to actually achieve things and he sets a great example of what presidential looks like. In those early years he stacks up with any of our presidents. JJ: I would have to think that every time Bryan Cranston walked on set jaws dropped. It had to be freaky! JR: It was pretty incredible to see. We saw it in phases with our great make-up person Bill Corso, and we were working on wardrobe with Daniel Orlandi down to getting the glasses right and hair. When it all came together for the camera test it was astounding. Bryan’s talent and connection with the soul of LBJ, he was channeling him absolutely. One of the people who knew LBJ back then, Larry Temple, said he wasn’t seeing a great interpretation of LBJ but felt like he was actually with LBJ. That’s a compliment. JJ: It’s not just the instant reaction but the mannerisms but the way he looks, or sits or staring out a window, you forget it’s Bryan Cranston. JR: Bryan has let himself fall away at that point and let LBJ take over in every way. JJ: Choosing Anthony Mackie to portray Martin Luther King, there is such a quietness about him. Most characters portraying MLK are usually boisterous with the feeling of the speeches. Mackie takes the introspective side of King. JR: They had a lot to get done together and LBJ could never have passed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act without King’s support and collaboration. They weren’t perfectly in synch because King didn’t trust LBJ because of the leaders in the past. Anthony made a great choice and a wise choice like you were saying of trying to capture the quiet strength of the man because we already know his oratorical strength. He chose to try to get at that quiet strength and there are some interviews available where King is quietly describing what matters to him and how he is going to go at it. JJ: Finally, if you could, what would you want the readers to know about this piece in that it is not only important but also relevant to us now? JR: This movie is about what a truly presidential person does with power when he gets it. He worked his whole life to get to this point but always knew that he wanted to do something with it. He says about getting the Civil Rights Act passed, “If I can’t use my power to right a horrible injustice, then what is the presidency for? That sums up LBJ and to watch his very early years and see what we can do as a nation when we team up and put our faith in our system to get things done. He believed in that more and is such a fantastic topic of conversation for where we are now in this presidential election. What is leadership? What is presidential? I do think those early years of LBJ couldn’t be more timely. He did so much from November of 1963 to the reelection and he was on fire!
