‘LIL’ HEATHEN’ By Art Garcia Jr MilitaryPress

here will be plenty of explosive action on July 28 when former UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo faces Jeremy Stephens in the co-main event of UFC on FOX 30. Looking to rebound from the first losing streak of his 30-fight career, Aldo (26-4) is currently ranked No. 2 in the featherweight division despite losing three of his last four fights. In his prime, Aldo was widely regarded as the top pound-forpound fighter in the world while riding an 18-fight winning streak when he reigned as the champion of the UFC and the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) promotions at 145 pounds. Ranked No. 4 in the featherweight division, Stephens (28-14), is quickly climbing to the top of the division by gaining three straight wins over very respected opponents. Although his latest victories didn’t really surprise anyone, the ferocity in which he finished those bouts has many believing a win over Aldo would justify a title shot sometime this fall. Training under the direction of Eric Del Fierro at Alliance MMA in Chula Vista, Stephens has put up some impressive numbers in the UFC. Per Fighters Only, his 28 UFC fights are 2nd most in UFC history and just one shy of Michael Bisping’s overall record. His 18 knockdowns are tied with the great Anderson Silva for the most in UFC history and his 5:46:04 Octagon fight time ranks the third highest all-time in the UFC. As he prepares for his upcoming showdown with Aldo, Stephens sat down with MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. for a two-part interview. You can read part one at https:// goo.gl/xURh3A. In part two of his interview, Stephens, known as “Lil’ Heathen, talks about his self-determination, being a role model and possible long-term plans he might like to pursue once his MMA career comes to an end. Art Garcia Jr: You mentioned how opponents don’t like to feel the power of your punches. Have you ever nailed someone with what you thought would be a knockout punch only to have him shake his head no? Jeremy Stephens: Yes, Sam Stout when I fought him. Trust me I’ve loosened up a lot of chins too, and I’ve had people who have been able to take my shots, and that’s O.K. because I’ll keep dishing them out all night. It’s a different fight when they fight me, people don’t fight me the way they fight other people because they don’t want to get hit by it (his power). Now I’m a lot more dialed in, in figuring the game out and it’s just the experience I have in the bank and having confidence in that experience. AG: I know you had a pretty rough childhood where you transferred to a number of different schools and actually lived out of the family car at one point, what kept you on the straight-and-narrow as opposed to getting into trouble? JS: Just the fact that I learned what not to do. I realized that at very young age and, I made a choice that I didn’t want to live like that. I didn’t want to tolerate that type of life. So basically it was me not tolerating it and raising my standards that, “Hey, when I’m able to do something I’m gonna do something about it, and I was able do LIL’ HEATHEN, continued on Page 8

Bring all your monsters to see ‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

In theaters from director Genndy Tartakovsky and Sony Pictures Animation is a return to visit one of our favorite monster family’s at “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. The hotel is busier than ever as Dracula (Adam Sandler) and daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) miss spending family time together. Son-in-law Johnny (Andy Samberg) thinks Mavis’ idea of a family vacation is fantastic and along with son Dennis (Asher Blinkoff ) pack immediately. Mavis has booked passage on a monster cruise and invites the extended family with Frank (Kevin James), Eunice (Fran Drescher), Wayne (Steve Buscemi), Wanda (Molly Shannon) and their brood, Griffin (David Spade), Murray (KeeganMichael Key) and Grandpa Vlad (Mel Brooks). At first Dracula isn’t thrilled about the idea but when Mavis implores him to use the time for family, he can’t exactly turn her down. The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later, the chief called the National Weather Service again. “Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold? “Absolutely, the man replied. ‘It’s look- ing more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we’ve ever seen. “How can you be so sure? the chief asked. The weatherman replied, “The Indians are collecting a ton of firewood!

Wake up for church Weather forecast

It’s late fall and the Indians on a remote reservation in South Dakota asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell what the winter was go- ing to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But, being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, “Is the coming winter going to be cold? “It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold, the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later, he called the National Weather Service again. “Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter? “Yes, the man at National Weather Service again replied, “It’s going to be a very cold winter.

One Sunday morning, a mother went in to wake her son and tell him it was time to get ready for church, to which he replied, “I’m not going. “Why not? she asked. “I’ll give you two good reasons, he said. “One, they don’t like me, and two, I don’t like them. “I’ll give YOU two good reasons why you SHOULD go to church, his mother re- plied. “One, you’re 54-years-old, and two, you’re the pastor!

Senior guessing

Eighty-year-old Bessie bursts into the recreation room of the retirement home. She holds her clenched fist in the air and announces, “Anyone who can guess what’s in my hand, can take me out to dinner tonight! A witty, elderly gentleman in the rear shouts out, “An elephant? Bessie thinks a minute and replies, “Close enough!

Whiskey cure

A man drinks a shot of whiskey every night before bed. After years of this the wife wants him to quit, so she gets two shot glasses, filling one with water the other with whiskey. She gets him to the table with the glasses and has his bait box there too.

She says, “I want you to see this. She puts a worm in the water it swims around. She puts a worm in the whiskey and the worm dies. She says, “So, what do you have to say about this experiment? “If I drink whiskey, I won’t get worms!

signed the death certificate, you had not taken steps to make sure he was dead. “Well, let me put it this way, the doctor said. “The man’s brain was in a jar on my desk but, for all I know, he could be out practicing law somewhere.

Cross examination

Little Johnny wanted to go to the zoo and pestered his parents for days. Finally his mother talked his reluctant father into taking him. “So how was it? his mother asked when they returned home. “Great, Little Johnny replied. “Did you and your father have a good time? asked his mother. “Yeah, Daddy especially liked it, exclaimed Little Johnny excitedly, “Especially when one of the animals came home.

A lawyer was cross-examining the doc- tor about whether or not he had checked the pulse of the deceased before he signed the death certificate. “No, the doctor said. “I did not check his pulse. “And did you listen for a heart- beat? asked the lawyer. “No I did not, the doctor said. “So, said the lawyer, “When you

DIE HARD Continued from Page 3

tor. A good place to start is the book that inspired the film. “Nothing Lasts Forever, written by Roderick Thorp and published in 1979, is much more “Christmas-y than the film “Die Hard, Souza said, using the holiday to underscore the hero’s fall from grace. Joe Leland, a hard-boiled New York cop whose wife is dead at the start of the book, arrives in Los Angeles to visit his daughter on Christmas Eve. Broken by the job, he now looks back on the holidays with regret. The film is less grim, but Christmas is still a vehicle to get a New York City cop to Los Angeles, Souza said. In the movie, co-written by Jeb Stuart, McClane visits California to see his two children during the holiday and win back the affection of his wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia). But Hans Gruber, the head terrorist and heist man played by Alan Rickman, still needs a scenario to exploit lax holiday security and a nearly empty office building. Enter the nighttime Christmas party at fictional Nakatomi Plaza, the prime target for Gruber to scoop up drunken employees as hostages. McClane even gets into the holiday spirit in his own twisted way. He kills the captors in a cat-and-mouse game throughout the film, leaving one body in a chair. There is a message scrawled in red on the shirt of the dead terrorist: “Now I have a machine gun. Ho-HoHo. His head is topped with a Santa Claus hat. In the years after its release, “Die Hard-as-a-Christmas-movie has become its own unstoppable cultural force, fueled by the Internet. “Films now have this other afterlife in tiny clips and gifs, film historian Matthew Sweet told the Guardian, “so a particular image from a film — like the dead terrorist in the Santa hat in Die Hard — can break free from the film and have this other life online that might be its most vigorous form of life. The celebration of the film as a Christmas landmark has played out beyond Twitter and Facebook. The Alamo Drafthouse has slated quotealong screenings of the film during the holiday season. There’s even a children’s book, “A Die Hard Christmas, with violent illustrations that are definitely for parents and not kids. And in one cold, algorithm-driven way, this all has led to Google to put any doubt to rest. Type “Christmas movies into the search bar and you’ll see the typical results: “Elf. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas. “The Polar Express. But among the top results: a poster of John McClane, a Beretta pistol in hand. 8 +VMZ

that at a young age. So, really it just clicked in my mind the fact that I wasn’t going to tolerate trash for a living. AG: Was there someone that influenced you like a coach, your mom, your dad or someone else? JS: No, it was really just my relationship with God and staying committed to my dreams and being real with my heart. You know at times your mind can play tricks on you, but if you stay true to your heart, you pray, meditate or whatever it is you do, if you stay true to that and you’re just not going to tolerate that type of living then you will make changes in order to live the life you want. It will happen because you won’t settle for less — so that’s the mindset that I have. AG: That is a great story, especially for many kids out there that are growing up under similar circumstances. Has anyone told you that you’re an inspiration and how do you feel about kids looking up to you? JS: Yeah, of course. Some people do look up to me and there is always fans and young kids and that’s cool as hell because growing up I used to watch The Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan and I was kind of like, “Man, those guys would be great (to meet), but you never really saw those guys on the outside signing autographs or at least I never did. So when you meet people like that and they tell you they want

to be like you, that’s awesome. There is a you be? JS: If I weren’t a fighter, I don’t know good quote that I heard by Michael Jordan that said, “Don’t be like me, be better than — maybe I’d become a firefighter or kick me. There is always something you can in the door for the DEA or something like learn and take from our generation and that ... maybe a drug smuggler (he says jokingly), I’m not sure. I’m a really good possibly improve on when it’s your time. AG: Speaking of being recognized, be- shot, too. I like to hunt when I go back to ing a professional athlete do you find it Iowa with my dad, my grandfather and all hard to trust people on the outside of your those guys as well. JS: That’s kind of hard to explain, but loway. Currently ranked No. 3 as the best it’s something where when you become a pound-for- pound fighter in the UFC, father your life changes right away.
