Legendary Marine poised to be next defense secretary

JAMES MATTIS
in his own words Uncommon wisdom from the ‘most revered Marine in a generation’ “No war is over until the enemy says it’s over. We may think it over, we may declare it over, but in fact, the enemy gets a vote.
He led Marines in two wars, is highly respected and reportedly convinced the president-elect to rethink the use of torture in less than an hour.
“Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.
R
etired Marine Gen. James N. Mattis is known as “Chaos, “Warrior Monk and “Mad Dog. The names reflect his blunt way of speaking — and his ability to cut through bullsh–t to get results. A man whom many would like to see run for president himself, he is Donald Trump’s expected pick for secretary of defense. Mattis, who retired with four stars in 2013, met with Trump as a candidate on the short list to direct the Defense Department. Afterward, the presidentelect called the 66-year-old “impressive in a tweet. The general led Task Force 58 into Afghanistan in 2001 — the first large U.S. ground force to enter the nation, as a one-star general based at Camp Pendleton. Mattis went on to lead San Diego County Marines in the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the bloody Fallujah campaign of 2004. He later had a hand in writing the counterinsurgency doctrine that helped turn around the deadly Al Anbar district after 2006 with Army Gen. David Petraeus — who is also being considered for a post in the new administration. The Marine icon — a legend, even — is known to speak truth to power, and has a few thoughts on how to make America great again.
“You cannot allow any of your people to avoid the brutal facts. If they start living in a dream world, it’s going to be bad.
“There is nothing better than getting shot at and missed. It’s really great. “The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some a–holes in the world that just need to be shot.
America is not an island
“Demonstrate to the world there is ‘No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy’ than a U.S. Marine.
America now is built on the ideology of the post-WWII generation, meaning the institutions of this country, and its attitudes toward the rest of world, revolve around one idea: the world works best when countries work together to stop global threats. “The constructed order reflected the wisdom of those who recognized no nation lived as an island and we needed new ways to deal with challenges that for better or worse impacted all nations, Mattis told Congress in 2015. “Like it or not, today we are part of this larger world and must carry out our part... The international order built on the state system is not self-sustaining.
“The most important six inches on the battlefield is between your ears.

Metallica’s Ulrich answers stupid questions Metal drummer riffs on ‘St. Anger,’ drum solos and Uber By Dan Snierson Entertainment Weekly
Metallica has returned with their first studio album in eight years, “Hardwired‌ to Self-Destruct.â€? And when the metal gods go heavy, we go light: EW asked drummer Lars Ulrich to trade his sticks for shtick and play along with a few Stupid Questions. Entertainment Weekly: Tell me some things about the new album that could be applied to every other album you’ve released. Lars Ulrich: The new album is the best album we’ve ever done. It’s destined to make lots of people happy — and a few people upset. EW: Rank these Metallica songs in order of their hopefulness: “Creeping Death,â€? “Harvester of Sorrow,â€? “To Live Is to Die,â€? “Broken, Beat & Scarredâ€? LU: They’re all tied for last‌ “Creeping Deathâ€? is actually partially inspired by the OG Ten Commandments movie, the one with Charlton Heston in it, which somehow, in some perverse way, has some sort of message of hope buried in there somewhere. That’s second-to-last. EW: In 1981, James Hetfield responded

EW: Has there ever been a moment where you didn’t think, “You know what this song needs? More double bass drum!? LU: Yes. Mostly live, at the end of the set, on warm, humid nights. “Why the f— did I step it up here? I should have taken the easier way out in the studio! EW: When you’re in the middle of a kickass drum solo, where do your thoughts drift off to? LU: “I should have taken lessons. I hope the sound man has turned this up so loud that the volume is masking my inability. Every late great drummer is currently turning over in his grave. And then the last one is: “Since I write the set list, reminder: Don’t put ‘One’ on tomorrow’s set list. EW: After playing in Antarctica in 2013, you released the mini-documentary “Freeze ’Em All. How on earth did you not call it “Chill ’Em All? LU: Anytime you get a chance to put the letter z in a title instead of c, that’s always a cooler option. to your ad in the “Recycler that was seeking people to jam with. What were the other ads you placed in that issue? Were you selling an Atari? LU: I did not have anything of that status at the time. I can tell you what I wasn’t selling, which was soap, because Hetfield’s standard story when he describes our first meeting in the wake of the ad was that he thought I smelled very European and hadn’t washed in years.

IF MCGREGOR CAN’T DEFEND MULTIPLE UFC TITLES, WHO CAN? Irishman forced to give up featherweight belt
More than a decade ago, when the UFC only had five weight classes and far fewer total fighters, B.J. Penn would speak frequently about holding belts in multiple divisions simultaneously. And at the same time, UFC president Dana White would shudder and say he wouldn’t allow it to happen. Who didn’t love to see the small man dream, to shoot for a seemingly unattainable star? This is a guy who easily made lightweight moving up to light heavyweight to face future UFC champion Lyoto Machida. When Conor McGregor said he wanted to move up to lightweight to challenge then-champion Rafael dos Anjos for that belt after knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194, it evoked memories of Penn. McGregor ultimately did move up and gain the lightweight title, resoundingly stopping Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 on Nov. 12 to become the first fighter in the company’s history to hold two belts simultaneously. But he never defended the featherweight belt, as he said he would, and on Nov. 26 was stripped of his 145-pound title
The UFC stripped Connor McGregor of his featherweight title Nov. 26 because he didn’t defend it.
by the UFC. If McGregor, who fights as regularly as any high-level star in the UFC’s history, couldn’t do it, who can? White, it turns out, was correct all those many years ago when he repeatedly shot
down Penn’s request to challenge for multiple titles. The UFC has become a big business in the last decade-plus since Penn dreamed of holding multiple belts simultaneously. That was evidenced loudly and clearly in
July, when a company that was purchased off the scrap heap for $2 million in 2001 sold for $4.2 billion 15 years later. With big money comes more people looking to get a piece of it. And from top to bottom, the talent at the highest level of mixed martial arts is better than it’s ever been. A higher level of athlete is coming to the sport. There is better coaching, better training techniques, better understanding of nutrition and supplementation and better preparation. Look at the lightweight division, which McGregor now rules, and consider how many fighters are good enough to win the belt. Alvarez and dos Anjos have already held it. Contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson are clearly good enough. So, too, is Nate Diaz and Edson Barboza and so many others. Will any of them ever hold the title? That remains to be seen. Odds are, most of them won’t. But there are so many talented enough to do so that it’s like running a gauntlet of executioners just to try to retain the title. One bad night — even a good night with one little mistake — could cost a champion his or her belt in the modern UFC. The level of competition is that good. To go one step beyond what McGregor did and not only win a second belt but then defend both at least once is mindbogglingly difficult.

BIGGER PAY RAISE STILL POSSIBLE THIS YEAR Congress set to override
Obama; give largest pay increase in five years
WASHINGTON — Troops still have a chance in December to receive their highest pay raise in years, even if Congress goes ahead with plans to put off a vote on 2017 defense spending for months to accommodate President-elect Donald Trump. The House and Senate are hashing out the details of the National Defense Authorization Act, a sprawling military policy bill, and could wrap up early December. House lawmakers have proposed a version of the annual bill that includes a 2.1-percent pay hike instead of the 1.6 percent increase ordered by President Barack Obama to take effect in January. If the House proposal prevails in the final NDAA — the Senate went with the lower raise — it could become law in December and the Defense Department would be required to begin doling out the biggest military pay raise in five years, according to congressional staff involved with the legislation. Obama used an executive order to set the 2016 pay raise at 1.3 percent. Congress has already abandoned plans

to pass a 2017 defense appropriations bill before the end of the year, which could leave other new policies in the NDAA unfunded for now. But the pay raise could go into effect even as other spending increases are delayed, staff members said. Republican leaders announced they will pursue a stop-gap budget measure to maintain current federal and military funding levels through the end of March so Trump can have input after being sworn in Jan. 20 as president. The Defense Department has repeatedly warned
against such moves, contending it will cause a budgetary complication and thwart good planning. But it remains uncertain how the closed-door NDAA negotiations will pan out in the coming days. The armed services committees in the House and Senate are wrangling over whether to risk Obama’s veto of the NDAA by boosting base spending with $18 billion to buy new hardware such as ships and aircraft, increase troops and boost pay that has been lagging behind the private sector for years.
Military pay raises have been kept below 2 percent since 2011 while troops and families have been stressed by deployments, aging equipment and shrinking overall defense spending. The National Military Family Association has said troops are being “nickeland-dimed and that a higher pay raise is among its top priorities. Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, chairman of the House committee, has been leading the charge for higher military spending — including the 2.1-percent raise — and warning of a readiness crisis due to a dip in spending since the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. His Senate counterpart, John McCain, R-Ariz., advocated for a spending boost as well but ended up sponsoring an NDAA that hewed to the lower spending levels requested by the Obama administration. Some budget analysts believe Thornberry and McCain might feel emboldened to push for bigger boosts to the military in the final NDAA following the election of Trump. Congress must still approve any final version of the bill. Democrats have demanded increases for the military be matched dollar for dollar by more domestic spending but now might be more willing to cut a deal as they face a Republican president and Republican-controlled Congress next year.

CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR
The CIA’s failed attempts to kill Castro Fidel Castro survived no fewer than 634 attempts on his life, according to his former secret service chief. Whether that figure is accurate or not, Cuba’s iconic dictator provided an almost-mythical adversary for what became an obsessive, errorprone assassination campaign by the CIA. Many of agency’s attempts to kill Castro were detailed by the Church Committee, a special Senate subcommittee headed by Decomcratic Sen. Frank Church in 1975. Following Castro’s death — ironically on the capitalist Black Friday — here are seven of the most remarkable.
The exploding cigar
Perhaps the most famous attempt to kill Castro came in 1960 when the CIA poisoned a box of his favorite cigars — strong enough to kill anybody who put one in their mouth. The cigars were delivered to an “unidentified person in 1961, according to the subcommittee, but it’s unclear what happened to them after that. Needless to say, they were never chewed by “El Comandante.
with Castro’s removal. The agency was willing to pay $150,000 (at least $1.2 million in today’s money). These mobsters were Sam Giancana, the boss of the Chicago mob, and Santos Trafficant, the head of the mob’s Cuban operations. Both of them were members of the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list. The CIA provided six pills of “high lethal content to a cash-strapped Cuban official who had access to Castro. However, the Cuban got cold feet and the plan was abandoned.
The painted seashell
Undeterred, the CIA tried an even more elaborate plan in 1963. Intelligence officials thought they could use Castro’s love of scuba-diving to topple him. They planned to hide explosives inside a large seashell and paint it with exotic colors to lure the attention of the ocean-loving communist. Like many others, this idea was “discarded as impractical.
The contaminated diving suit
The same year, the CIA planned to contaminate one of Castro’s diving suits with a fungus that would produce a chronic and The reluctant Cuban Months earlier the CIA used a series of debilitating skin disease. The diving suit, as middlemen to enlist two gangsters to help well as an infected breathing apparatus, was

Prioritize threats accurately
Who exactly is America fighting? Why? What exactly is America fighting, ideology-wise? These questions are unclear — and they need to be answered in order to best allocate resources, manpower and funding under the Trump administration. “Murky or quixotic political end states can condemn us to entering wars we don’t know how to end, Mattis says. He called on the intelligence committee to “delineate and provide an initial prioritization of all current threats to the U.S. in order to solve these questions, including “rigorously defining the problems and creating a “more intelligent and focused use of resources. The biggest physical threat Mattis identifies is the Middle East as a whole, where he notes “our influence is at its lowest point in four decades. Because our influence is waning, Mattis urges the American military to take a relaxed leadership position where we “recognize that regional counterweights like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council can reinforce us if they un-

A doctor at an insane asylum decided to take his inmates to a baseball game. For weeks in advance, he coached his patients to respond to his commands. When the day of the game arrived, everything seemed to be going well. As the national anthem started, the doctor yelled, “Up nuts! And the inmates complied by standing up. After the anthem he yelled, “Down Nuts! And they all sat. After a home run he yelled, “Cheer nuts! And they all broke into applause and cheers. Thinking things were going well, he decides to go get a beer and a hot dog, leaving his assistant in charge. When he returned there was a riot in progress. Finding his assistant, he asked what happened. The assistant replied, “Well, everything was fine until some guy walked by and yelled, PEANUTS!’

Eight-year-old Sally brought her report card home from school. Her marks were good...mostly A’s and a couple of B’s. However, her teacher had written across the bottom: “Sally is a smart little girl, but she has one fault. She talks too much in school. I have an idea I am going to try, which I think may break her of the habit. Sally’s dad signed her report card, putting a note on the back: “Please let me know if your idea works on Sally because I would like to try it out on her mother. XXX NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN t OFXT!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN

BROWN Continued from Page 4
linebacker so they projected you as a safety, what do you feel you bring to the team? JB: I would say my desire and my love for the game ‌ my passion and my effort is probably my strengths. AG: Has anything in the NFL come as a surprise to you? JB: Not really because I knew everybody is good in the NFL, so nothing has really surprised me. AG: With that being said, what has been the biggest adjustment you’ve had to make coming from Akron to the NFL? JB: I think learning the terminology, the speed of the game and learning our defense. AG: You were drafted in the fifth round out of Akron, with all the “expertsâ€? projecting you to go in that round. Did you expect to be drafted earlier, or was that where you thought you might be selected? JB: Of course I was expecting to be drafted in the higher rounds, who doesn’t? But it is what it is, and I’m just happy to be here. AG: Did the fact that you were not drafted higher give you more incentive to prove the scouts wrong ‌ maybe put a chip on your shoulder? JB: Oh yeah, always — it just added to that chip on the shoulder that I already had. AG: This team has lost a lot of close games this year, what is going to be the key to turn this team around to finish the season strong?
JB: Just playing together as one, we just have to know that it is all about us. This is all about us — that’s all we got. The Endzone: As a senior, Brown led his high school, Belle Glade High in Belle Glades, Fla., to an undefeated season — including five shutouts. Despite being named Defensive Player of the Year, not many colleges came calling, which is why he ended up in the Mid-American Conference at Akron. “I had one Division I offer and a couple Division II offers, Brown said. “I wasn’t recruited heavily out of high school. Akron was the best offer I had at the time and I loved the coaches there. In addition to being named the conference’s defensive player of the year in 2015, Brown was a three-time firstteam MAC performer. Voted a team captain as a senior, he set school records at Akron for career tackles for loss (41.5) and season tackles for loss (20) and sacks (12). In 2012 Brown played as a true freshman and finished his collegiate career with 345 tackles, 18 sacks, 41.5 tackles for loss, 10 forced fumbles and an interception. Having missed the last four games due to a knee injury, look for Brown to return to the starting lineup this Sunday when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to town. Through the eight games he has played this season, Brown has posted 54 tackles (team leader prior to the Houston Texans game), 43 solo, 11 assists, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

I would keep “smother out of any attempted rhyming pattern. EW: If you were to do a documentary about the making of this new album, what would it be called? LU: “Throwing Darts at a Calendar: The Unpredictable and Completely Illogical Metallica Work Patterns. EW: Metallica has had five consecutive studio albums debut at No. 1 on Billboard 200. What would you do to ensure that this one goes No. 1, too? Would you be willing to, say, give back the Grammy you won for “St. Anger? LU: [Pause] Did we win a Grammy for “St. Anger? EW: You actually did. LU: Winning a Grammy for “St. Anger just sounds wrong. EW: It does. LU: Since we have more Grammys than No. 1 albums, for the sense of balancing those out, yes, I would give the “St. Anger Grammy back, to get those numbers closer together. EW: You received a lot of flak for the sound of your snare in “St. Anger. What was your favorite insult? LU: There were so many that I can’t remember, but the one that I generally say was right there with the best of them, which was that I forgot to take the snare

out of the cardboard box that it came in. EW: Metallica music was played by American troops in Afghanistan to repel the Taliban. Would the war have been over much faster if they’d used Nickelback? LU: Forget about Nickelback — the war would have been over even faster if they’d stuck to only “St. Anger songs. EW: You fought what turned out to be a very prescient battle with Napster— LU: Very what? EW: Prescient. LU: Big word for Entertainment Weekly! Okay, wow! I don’t even know if they use that in The Atlantic! EW: Thanks! Let’s get you in a fight with another digital company. Your choice: Uber, Bumble, or Airbnb. LU: My first Uber battle was that I was convinced I could be the first customer that didn’t have to submit my personal phone number. So at the Burbank airport two years ago, I stood and waited for about an hour for my Uber to show up, because I refused to give them my direct phone number. They never came. EW: So, f— Uber. You’re mad. You’ll see them in court. LU: I don’t get mad anymore. I’m 52 years old. I have since found a way around this particular issue. EW: What’s one thing you’ve always wondered about yourself but were too scared to ask? LU: In no particular order: What’s with the accent? What’s with the big forehead? Do I really look like an olive on a toothpick like Kirk Hammett says? Why am I so stubborn? Why am I so contrary? Why the extra chin? Shall I go on? 9.
