DRAIN THE SWAMP! Government spending and crony capitalism are out of control, but can it be fixed? By John Stossel

P

resident-elect Trump says he’s uniquely qualified to “drain the swamp in Washington, D.C. He can do it, he said at one debate, because as a businessman, he understands American cronyism. “With Hillary Clinton, I said, ‘Be at my wedding,’ and she came to my wedding. You know why? She had no choice because I gave. He said that’s why he gives money to politicians from both parties. “When they call, I give. And when I need something from them two years later, three years later, I call them. They are there for me! That’s crony capitalism. Ideally, laws are applied equally; no one gets a special break because he gives money. But today’s complex government allows the politically connected to corrupt... most everything. Even parts of the government swamp designed to protect consumers, like DoddFrank banking rules, get corrupted. Banks watch little changes in rules far more closely than you ever will. Then they exploit them. Bank lobbyists make money off complex laws like Dodd-Frank. They fight tooth and nail to keep them, not abolish them. Congress recently almost got rid of one obvious example of crony capitalism, the Export-Import Bank. To encourage exports of American products, bureaucrats give loans to Boeing and other big companies. Some principled Republicans tried to eliminate this corporate welfare, but ExIm loans were voted back in during the final hours of budget negotiations. Government programs almost never die. Businesses in cozy relationships with government don’t die either. Jeff Deist, president of the free-market Mises Institute, says when the housing bubble burst, banks should have been allowed to fail and put through “the bankruptcy and liquidation process. Investors would have lost big, but that’s OK, says Deist. “That’s the difference between free-market capitalism and state capitalism. With state capitalism, there are upsides for the parties involved — but no downsides. In the swamp, no one but taxpayers pays for their mistakes. Politicians routinely promise to change this culture, but once they get to D.C., they lose interest, says Trump. “They go to Washington, something happens — they become weak... I promise this is not going to happen to me. I want to believe him. But even if he were an utterly principled man — and I await evidence of that — it’s tough to constantly say “no to people. When you’re in Congress, people ask you for money all day. “I need a grant for SWAMP, continued on Page 10

TOP TEN FILMS By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

Has it been a year already? Absolutely it has, and here are my Top Ten films of 2016. Of course, being me, I don’t think anyone will be surprised that my choices are spread among many genres. Let us begin with No. 10!

and Yarrow Cheney bring friendship and loyalty wrapped up in slobbery kisses in this animated family film.

OF 2016

7. ‘The Innocents’

10. ‘A Monster Calls’

The story of a young boy dealing with an ill mother, a grandmother who clearly doesn’t understand him, an absent father and a rather large tree! It is a film that questions what it means to be a complex human being and will require lots of tissue. Focus Features deserves every accolade along with director JA Bayona and young actor Lewis MacDouglass.

In the category of unexpected brilliance is Music Box Films and director Anne Fontaine’s film “The Innocents (“Les Innocentes). In 1945 Poland, a young doctor befriends a group of nuns who need her help. Behind the walls of the convent are shocking secrets in this story of survival surrounded by a brutal war. Every frame holds an unexpected turn with a stellar cast of amazing actresses. man spirit as Berg brings true stories to musician Sebastian and equally struggling the screen and gives each film heart, soul actress Mia find each other, they share and a deep well of emotion. their dreams of success that might easily rip them apart, but, hey — here’s to the fools who dream right?

6. ‘Trolls’

9. ‘Jackie’

Fox Searchlight Pictures and director Pablo Larrain bring an in-depth look at the death of President John F. Kennedy from a perspective I’ve never seen. Natalie Portman brings her acting skills front and center as the days preceding and after the president’s death are told from Jacqueline Kennedy’s perspective. Every corner of this film is brilliantly done.

Twentieth Century Fox and DreamWorks team up for this absolutely spectacular animated film. From the happiest little creatures to the grumpy Bergen, the “Trolls story is told with breathtaking animation as Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick sing their way into our hearts. This is a tip-tapping good time filled with fun, laughter and songs that have already stuck in my head.

4. ‘Sully’

Director Clint Eastwood and Warner Bros. Pictures lets Tom Hanks have the pilot’s seat in this true story about Chesley Sullenberger and co-pilot Jeff Skiles and the landing of a plane on the Hudson River. In this remarkable film, Hank’s performance as Sully proves that calmer heads prevail both in the air and on the ground, especially when there are those looking for someone to blame.

2. ‘Deadpool’

Ryan Reynolds began 2016 for me with such deep and disturbing laughs that I harbor a secret wish for more! Director Tim Miller along with Marvel and 20th Century Fox put on screen a “superhero who is probably anything but super by most standards! Instead, Wade/Deadpool is a deeply disturbing smart mouth with a line for everything and no real fear because that’s what happens when death is taken off the table.

5. ‘Deepwater Horizon’ & ‘Patriots Day’ 8. ‘The Secret Life of Pets’

Ever wonder what your pets are doing during the day? Well, Universal and Illumination Entertainment have the answers in this colorful, fun and heartwarming look at our furry friends and the mischief being a pet brings. Director Chris Renaud

Since both films are directed by Peter Berg and star Mark Wahlberg, I’m calling this a double win! “Deepwater Horizon tells the story of the BP oil rig disaster and the consequences of that event. “Patriots Day is the story of the Boston Marathon bombing and the hunt for the terrorists. They are both amazing films about the hu-

CHRIS STEVENS’ FIANCÉ WANTS TO GIVE HIM A VOICE

New book tells life of ambassador killed in Benghazi By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress

If there is any reason to rejoice over the fact Hillary Clinton was not elected president, it is one word: Benghazi. The 3 a.m. phone call came and she did not answer the call. Americans still do not know the truth and facts surrounding her role in this tragic incident. Lydie M. Denier has just released her book, “A Voice For Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens.â€? said, ‘What difference does it make?’ “It does matter because Chris needed a voice, and I am happy to be it. He was always in my heart and I wanted people to get to know him as a great human being, she said. “In going through his stuff, his mother found some pictures with me. The letters I have, some of which I published, show him to be a very romantic and thoughtful person. It has been a constant fight to get the story out, and I had to publish it in Canada. Denier said she saw emails where Clinton referred to the ambassador as “Sean Stevens, when asking if she should immediately go public or wait until the next day. Was she uncaring or ignorant as she mixed up the names of those who died? She also wonders what happened to Stevens’ journal, since he kept one every day. “I heard his passport, belongings and journal were never given to his family, Denier said. “I can speculate that someone gave them to the State Department. Who knows what they did with them, possibly burning them. There was also a picture of him taken the day he died where he is standing between two men. I was told those were the two who are responsible for Chris’ death. The book has a quote that shows her frustration: “No one seems interested in digging for the facts to learn the truth about what happened to Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty who died tragically and needlessly that day. Instead, they want to obscure the truth to protect a political position ... The quote is more applicable since the Wikileaks’ emails have come out. They show how Clinton told the truth to her daughter Chelsea, but not the American people. “I want Americans to understand that Clinton sent him to Benghazi without any security, Denier said. “She ignored the 600 requests for help. He had been to Benghazi twice before. Even though she knew how dangerous it was, she sent him there because she wanted a presence on Sept. 11. He was to go there in August 2012, but because of the lack of security he and his team cancelled it. The trip was supposed to be postponed until October or November. Chris went there on 9/11 because she directly told him to go. She went on to say that “Chris had decided it was way too dangerous and had decided not to finish his term as ambassador and to come home. He was thinking of retiring because he saw a lack of respect within the State Department. Gregory Hicks told me they had tried desperately to get help after receiving the call from Chris that they were under attack. He felt powerless since he could not convince anyone to send help. Probably because this was the real ‘3 a.m. phone call’ and she VOICE, continued on Page 10

CHARGERS, TELESCO FACE TOUGH DECISIONS CHARGERS REPORT

W

by Art Garcia Jr.

ith the Chargers falling to 5–8 following their 28–16 loss to the Carolina Panthers, it is time to look at a few roster changes that could happen in the off-season. Age, injuries and high salaries will contribute to the tough personnel moves General Manager Tom Telesco will be making at the end of this season — no matter where the team plays next year. There is an old saying that, “The best ability is availability, meaning no matter how talented you are, if you cannot stay healthy enough to perform on the field you will be cut in favor of someone who can. Based on salary numbers provided by Spotrac, here is a list of a few players who could become cap casualties in 2017. Brandon Flowers (CB) — Leading the team in interceptions (3) and passes defended (11) after signing a one-year free agent contract in 2014, the Chargers resigned the former Chiefs Pro Bowler to a four-year deal for $36.4 million prior to the 2015 season. Flowers started 10 of the 11 games last season but missed significant playing time due to knee injuries and a concussion, and he missed the final five games of the year after being placed on “Reserved-Injured Dec. 12. This season Flowers has missed a total of seven games as a result of concussions he suffered in week three against the Colts and week 10 against the Dolphins. That totals three concussions over the past two seasons for the 30-year-old cornerback. According to Spotrac, Flowers contract included an $8 million signing bonus, $20.5 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $9.1 million. This season Flowers will earn a base salary of $7.75 million. Flowers has a cap hit of $9.7 million. Orlando Franklin (OG) — Signed prior to 2015 to anchor the left guard position,

Cornerback Brandon Flowers leads the Chargers in interceptions this year, but due to injuries and a salary cap, he could be one team member cut during the off-season.

Franklin was one of the top free agents on the market having started 70 of 71 possible games (including the playoffs) in his four seasons with the Denver Broncos. However, Franklin has missed significant playing time over the past two seasons thanks to ankle, knee and concussion issues. According to Spotrac, Franklin signed a five-year, $36.5 million contract with the San Diego Chargers, including an $8 million signing bonus, $16.5 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $7.3 million. In 2016, Franklin will earn a base salary of $5.5 million and an incentive bonus of $100,000. He has a cap hit of $7.2 million. King Dunlap (OT) — Following a stellar 2014 season where he was selected the Chargers’ Lineman of the Year, Dunlap signed four-year deal prior to the 2015 season. Having started all 16 games just once in his eight-year NFL career (2014), injuries sidelined him for much of the 2015 season where he finished just two of the seven games he started. Dunlap missed three games due to a concussion and he was inactive six of the final eight games because of a high-ankle sprain. In March, Dunlap agreed to restructure his contract down from a $4.5 to a $3.3 million guaranteed salary for this season. Dunlap signed a four-year, $28 million

contract with the Chargers, including a $6.5 million signing bonus, $13 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $7 million. In 2016, Dunlap will earn a base salary of $3.3 million and a roster bonus of $218,750. He has a cap hit of $5,143,750. Stevie Johnson (WR) — A three-time 1,000-yard receiver during his first seven seasons in the NFL, Johnson signed a three-year deal prior to the 2015 season. Injuries have plagued Johnson during his two seasons in San Diego — hamstring and groin injuries limited him to just 10 games

and eight starts last season, and after the second day of training camp he was put on “Injury-Reserve for the 2016 season after suffering a season-ending knee injury. Johnson signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract with San Diego, including a $3 million signing bonus, $3.87 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $3.5 million. In 2016, Johnson will earn a base salary of $2.9 million. He has a cap hit of $3.9 million. DECISIONS, continued on Page 10

Admiral calls out anthem protestors Decorated U.S. Navy Adm. Harry Harris called out quarterback Colin Kaepernick for taking a knee for the national anthem saying that no person who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor never failed to stand up. “You can bet that the men and women we honor today – and those who died that fateful mourning 75 years ago – never took a knee and never failed to stand whenever they heard our national anthem being played, Harris said, speaking at a cermeony marking the 75th anniversary of the Adm. Harry Harris Japanese attack. Harris’ remarks generated a lengthy standing ovation from the thousands gathered on a pier across the harbor from where the USS Arizona sank during the 1941 attack. “Today we have an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a patriot, to reflect on what it means to be a nation tested by war, he added, “and to reflect on both of the costs and blessings of liberty. Harris later said: “Hearing the words, ‘The land of the free and home of the brave’ means something special for every American, every day. But today, on Dec. 7, it takes on extraordinary significance. Reached for additional comment later, Pacific Command spokesman Robert Shuford said Harris’ remarks “speak for themselves. In recent months, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick and other NFL athletes have knelt through the national anthem to protest police brutality and the treatment of minorities. Their actions have drawn much criticism and acclaim alike.

USS Zumwalt arrives home in San Diego After a three-month journey from Maine, USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is now pierside at its homeport in San Diego. The first in a class of three guided missile destroyers arrived at Naval Station San Diego on Dec. 8. “We have looked forward to pulling in to San Diego for a long time, Zumwalt commanding officer Capt. James Kirk said in a Navy statement. “I can’t express enough how proud I am of the crew’s hard work in bringing Zumwalt to the West Coast. The ship suffered several engineering casualties related to its next-generation electric propulsion system, which delayed the arrival of the ship to its first homeport. In September, the ship was sidelined at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., for several days following a propulsion causality. Unspecified propulsion problems then kept the ship longer than expected at Naval Station Mayport, Fla. Last month the ship lost propulsion during a transit through the Panama Canal and had to spend several days pierside undergoing repairs. The root of the Norfolk and Panama casualties center around bearings linked to

the driveshafts from the ship’s Advanced Induction Motors that have been contaminated by seawater leaking from failed lube oil chillers. The massive induction motors are driven by the ship’s gas turbine generators and in turn drive the ship’s shafts and power Zumwalt’s weapons and sensors; the motors are the heart of the unique power system found in the ship class. The service is still investigating why the lube oil chillers leaked seawater into the

system in the first place. Now that the ship is in San Diego it will begin a combat systems activation period that will last for several months before it joins the fleet as a fully operational ship sometime in 2018. Zumwalt is the first of three in the $22-billion class. Michael Monsoor (DDG-1001) and Lyndon B. Johnson are currently under construction at Bath Iron Works in Maine.

time in his career last season and led the team with 10.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and 29 quarterback hits. With three games remaining this season, Ingram has produced 36 tackles, six sacks, three passes defended and three forced fumbles. There is no doubt Ingram and his representatives will be looking for a multi-year deal commensurate with the other top inside linebackers in the league. According to Spotrac, in determining Ingram’s “Fair Market Value (the first step in evaluating a player’s contract) is to identify players of the same position, with similar playing time/opportunity, who signed a con-

Her lies were never ending, Smith said. “First, she looks me in the eye and says that a video caused my son’s death, and then when I called her on it, she says ‘one of us is lying and it’s not me,’ basically calling me a liar. I truly believe she murdered my son. Denier and Smtih said they are glad Clinton lost, but it is a bittersweet victory since that will never bring back their loved ones. “How could anyone have trusted Clinton to take care of this whole country when she could not even take care of four men in Benghazi, Denier said. “I truly believe Hillary Clinton’s choice to sit still, leaving Americans alone, to fend for themselves in Benghazi, will go down in history as a singular act of cowardice.

Solyndra got half a billion dollars from President Obama. The company went bankrupt, which shouldn’t be a surprise. Government has no way of knowing which ideas will succeed. But it’s well worth it for companies to invest in lobbyists and fixers who dive into the swamp to extract subsidies. For taxpayers? Not so much. While the benefits to lobbyists are concentrated, taxpayer costs are diffuse. Solyndra cost each of us a couple bucks. Will you go to Washington to pester your congressman about that? Probably not. I want to believe Trump when he says he’ll “drain the swamp. But it’s easier to believe Thomas Jefferson who, with greater eloquence, said, “It’s the natural progress of things for government to gain ground, and liberty to yield. Draining the swamp would mean not just taking freebies away from corporations — or needy citizens — but eliminating complex handouts like Obamacare. Candidate Trump said he would repeal Obamacare. Will he? He’s already backed off of that promise, saying he likes two parts of the law — the most expensive parts. Every word in the register of federal regulations and laws has a special friend, a lobbyist (or 20) who will defend it, fight hard to make sure everything stays the same. Good luck draining that swamp, President Trump. I hope you’ll succeed, if that’s really your goal. But I won’t count on it. XXX NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN t OFXT!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN

tract around Ingram’s current age. Based on the statistical comparisons of Tamba Hali, Von Miller, Bruce Irvin and Ryan Kerrigan, Spotrac projected Ingram’s next contract to be a 5-year deal for $58,951,372 with a base salary of $11,790,274. The question is if Ingram is the type of impact player to command an average base salary in excess of $11 million per year? If one removes Miller’s base salary and compares Ingram to the salaries of Hali, Irvin and Kerrigan, I believe there will be a much better chance of re-signing Ingram. This season Ingram’s base salary is $2,099,559.

Three hymns

A pastor explained to his congregation that the church was in need of some extra money, so he asked them to consider being more than generous. He offered that whoever gave the most would

be able to pick three hymns. After the offering plates were passed about the church, the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had graciously offered a $1,000 bill. He was so excited that he immediately shared his joy with his congregation and said he’d like to personally thank the person who placed the money in the plate. A very quiet, elderly, saintly lady in the back of the church shyly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front, so she slowly she made her way towards him. The pastor told her how wonderful it was that she gave so much, and in thanks he asked her to pick out three hymns. Her eyes brightened as she looked over the congregation. She pointed to the three most handsome men in the church and said, “I’ll take him and him and him.

Recently a teacher, a garbage collector, and a lawyer wound up together at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter informed them that in order to get into Heaven, they would each have to answer one question. St. Peter addressed the teacher and asked, “What was the name of the ship that crashed into the iceberg? They just made a movie about it. The teacher answered quickly, “That would be the Titanic. St. Peter let him through the gate. St. Peter turned to the garbage man and, figuring Heaven didn’t *really* need all the odors that this guy would bring with him, decided to make the question a little harder: “How many people died on the ship? Fortunately for him, the trash man had just seen the movie. “1,228, he answered. “That’s right!
