THE MATCH

WHAT ARE THE ODDS AFTER WOODS’ WIN?

A

fter winning the Tour Championship on Sunday for his first victory in five years, Tiger Woods is favored to beat Phil Mickelson in their Nov. 23 $9 million match-play event. According to Golf Odds, Woods is the -220 (5-11) favorite, while Mickelson is a +180 (9-5) underdog. The winner-take-all match will take place at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas and air on pay-per-view via both B/R Live and DirecTV. Woods beat Billy Horschel by two strokes to win the Tour Championship, and he fell just short of winning the FedEx Cup as well. Justin Rose made a birdie on No. 18 to win the FedEx Cup, forcing ODDS, continued on Page 9

WOODS WOWS MICKELSON AHEAD OF BOUT

T

iger Woods won his first golf tournament in more than five years Sunday — and seemed to get the last laugh on his detractors in a viral video. Skratch TV posted a parody video on Twitter showing Woods watching several media members, from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith to FOX Sports’ Shannon Sharpe, saying Woods would never win again and he should retire. Woods stayed mum through the entire segment and at the end of the clip he broke into a glowing smile. The video was inspired by a 2017 clip of Woods watching a PGA TV ad that featured other big names in golf, like Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth, discussing how hard it is to win a tournament. That video ended with Woods smiling when the ad revealed his own victory record — then an impressive 79 tour wins. Woods shot a one-over par 71 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on Sunday to wrap up an emotional two-shot victory over Billy Horschel at the season-ending Tour Championship.

The weekend win marked Woods’ milestone 80th victory on the PGA Tour and his first since the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational. Phil Mickelson also ended the longest drought of his career with a playoff victory in the WGC-Mexico Championship,Mickelson, who closed with a 5-under 66, won for the first time since the 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield, a stretch of 101 tournaments worldwide. After playing with Tiger Woods, Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau on Tuesday ahead of the 2018 Ryder Cup, Phil Mickelson joked about his upcoming Thanksgiving Day “The Match with Tiger Woods for $1 million. At a press conference, Mickelson was asked by teammate Patrick Reed if he’s “nervous for the highly anticipated Thanksgiving faceoff. “I’m trying to negotiate a shot a side, Mickelson said. “It didn’t go over well, but I’m still working on it. I’ve got some negotiating to do, given how well he played last week.

n theaters from writer/director Dan Fogelman, Stage 6 Films and Amazon Studios is a look at the connecting we all have to “Life Itself. Will (Oscar Isaac) and Abby (Olivia Wilde) are New Yorkers who have a love that is enriched with laughter, love and the arrival of their first child. That’s what makes it all the more difficult for Will to handle Abby leaving him. Dr. Cait Morris (Annette Bening) is treating Will to help him deal with his life since leaving the hospital by talking about how they met. Javier (Sergio Peris-Mencheta) is a worker on an olive farm who captures the attention of owner Saccione (Antonio Banderas). Taking Javier under his wing, it changes life and allows him to bring a good life to wife Isabel (Laia Costa). Raising their young son Rigo (Adrian Marrero), a trip to New York would change his world entirely. Rigo (Alex Monner) is thrilled to be going to college but soon discovers that olive business to be with her. Dylan (Olivia Cooke) is a young his mother is not well. Bening as Dr. Morris has a short role but one that goes deep inside what is troubling Will. Her concern comes through as not only genuine but thought out. Peris-Mencheta as Javier is a quiet spirit who doesn’t believe he needs to share his story — with anyone. That is the problem with his relationships with both his wife and boss. Staying quiet when he should be speaking up is what brings him the biggest pains of his life. Banderas as Saccione is opposite of

After a night of feeling that life has treated her a bit unfairly, Dylan meets a young man and life begins to find its center. Finding love, understanding, life as well as the humanity to bear it all knows no bounds. Isaac as Will almost killed me in this role. Of course I realize that writer/director Fogelman is responsible for the hit television series “This is Us which also kills me so I should have expected it. That being said, Isaac in this role just knocks me around emotionally and then leaves me to deal with the aftermath. Strong, powerful and brilliant is all I can say. A petition had been submitted on Monday, urging commerce officials to scrub Cosby’s name off for good after numerous attacks on the star — including one where the words “serial rapistâ€? were scrawled on it. “This is America,â€? wrote one Twitter user on Tuesday. “We champion our predators.â€? lthough the Gold Rush first brought prospectors to California looking to make their fortunes, the Reno area exploded with the discovery of silver at the Comstock Lode. Then came the entrepreneurs (think Levi’s blue jeans), prostitutes and shady characters. Illegal gambling parlors sprung up — it was truly the Wild West. By the 1920s, Reno was referred to as Sodom and Gomorra. Bankers laundered money for Baby Face Nelson, Ma Barker’s gang, Alvin Karpis and Pretty Boy Floyd. All forms of gambling were legalized in Nevada in 1931. The Smith family, owners of Harold’s Club, soon realized that the golden goose was luring people from California to visit their casino in Reno. The Smiths were pioneers in terms of advertising, including roadside billboards and promotions. Their marketing efforts heralded a new chapter in gaming. “The Biggest Little City In the World became the destination for gambling. Things began to change due to the construction of the Hoover Dam, 19311936. It was then that Las Vegas became more than a way station in the desert. By the mid-1940s, thanks to the foresight of mobster Bugsy Siegal, Reno’s reign began to diminish and Las

Vegas’ ascendance began. Reno is still a draw for gamblers with first-rate casino resorts (Circus Circus, Eldorado, Silver Legacy, Grand Sierra, Atlantis and Peppermill, to name a few). It’s also noted for spectator events like the Reno Air Races, Hot August Nights (classic cars), major bowling

tournaments and the Great Reno Balloon Race. For more information, logon to www.RenoTahoe.com. Let’s Go! Follow Howard Hian online at www.Travelswith-Hian.com and PokerResorts.net, or in the iTunes store at Omaha Tutorial/Poker Resorts.

ST-PIERRE ‘KEEPING THE DOOR OPEN’ FOR RIGHT FIGHT

G

eorges St-Pierre still isn’t out of the woods with his ongoing battle with ulcerative colitis, but the former two-division UFC champion is inching ever closer to a return to full health. “Definitely the worst has passed, StPierre told MMA Fighting. “I’m dosing down the medication that I have. The medication is anti-inflammatory, so you have to dose it down. Not in one shot, you can’t stop in one shot, but I’m dosing it down every month and soon it will be past, a story of the past. As it goes right now, pretty much all of the symptoms are almost gone. St-Pierre, 37, has been sidelined since capturing the middleweight title on Nov. 2017 at UFC 217 in his successful return from a four-year hiatus from mixed martial arts. In that fight, St-Pierre pulled off a harrowing comefrom-behind victory over then-champion Michael Bisping to become one of only five men in promotional history to capture UFC titles in two separate divisions. St-Pierre was already widely considered to be the greatest welterweight to ever compete, having reigned over the division from 2007 until his departure in 2013. St-Pierre has spent the majority of

Georges St-Pierre last fought Nov. 2017 when he defeated Michael Bisping at UFC 217.

he gained for his move up to the middleweight division to challenge Bisping for the title. For now, that recovery process is still priority No. 1 in St-Pierre’s life, but the time could come soon when StPierre is able to return to the Octagon once more in a bid to extend his already formidable legacy. “I don’t want any contract to fight somebody right now, St-Pierre said, “because the minute you sign a contract, the mental warfare starts, and stress is something that amplifies everything. So I want to make sure I deal with it, I take care of it, and when everything will be finished, I will be able to look forward. My health is the most important thing for me. “[But I’m] absolutely not [closing the door on fighting again]. I’m keeping the door open. When I close it, then people will know. But right now it’s held open. That refrain is one St-Pierre has echoed several times in past months, which has sparked plenty of discussion among the fight community about the type of opponent St-Pierre could be looking for with his next fight. St-Pierre has played things coy, for the most part, saying only that he like to come back

for the chance to boost his legacy. In the past, he has specifically mentioned that a move to lightweight could be an intriguing possibility for him if it meant a chance to fight the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor. And although he has never cut down to 155 pounds, the drop to lightweight certainly seems doable. St-Pierre, who is currently promoting his new aquatic training system Hydrorevolution, told MMA Fighting on Tuesday that he is hovering around 183 pounds — a walkaround weight lighter than many of the UFC’s current lightweight contenders, including the division’s champion Nurmagomedov. “I feel much healthier than I was. I’m about 183 pounds, 184 pounds when I wake up in the morning, St-Pierre said. “I’m about 183, 184, that’s my natural weight. I believe everybody has an optimal weight where they can perform a physical task, [a weight] that it should be. You have a weight that is the optimal weight — that is your weight that you will perform at your best. That’s my weight. I tried to put on some weight for ST-PIERRE, continued on Page 12

MORE DATA NEEDED TO ASSESS WOMEN’S EFFECTIVENESS IN COMBAT ARMS ROLES

BY JIM GARAMONE DOD NEWS

ith so few women in combat arms right now, the services and Defense Department officials really can’t judge how successful the effort has been, Defense Secretary James N. Mattis told cadets at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. “It’s a very, very tough issue because it goes from some people’s perspective of what kind of society do we want, the secretary said. “In the event of trouble, you’re sleeping at night in your family home and you are the dad, mom, whatever. And you hear glass break downstairs. Who grabs a baseball bat and gets between the kids’ door and whoever broke in, and who reaches for the phone to call 911? In other words, it goes to the most almost primitive needs of a society to look out for its most vulnerable. At heart, this is the issue DoD faces, Mattis told the cadet who asked COMBAT ROLES, continued on Page 9

Woods to settle for second in the seasonlong event. Even so, the Tour Championship win was an exclamation point on Woods’ remarkable comeback from multiple back surgeries. He finished the year with eight top-10 results, including a second-place finish in the PGA Championship and a tie for sixth at The Open Championship. While Woods won the Tour Champion-

ship with a score of 11 under, Mickelson finished last at 13 over. Although Lefty won the WGC-Mexico Championship in March, he has struggled in recent months with no top-10 results since finishing tied for fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship in May. Along with being favored to beat Mickelson, Woods is tied with Jordan Spieth as the favorite to win the 2019 Masters at +900 (9-1), per OddsShark. Mickelson, meanwhile, is listed at +2800 (28-1) alongside Paul Casey and Bryson DeChambeau.

him what results he had seen. The question for the department comes down to whether it is a strength or a weakness to have women in the close-quarter infantry fight, Mattis said. Then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta opened the door by removing the ban on women in combat jobs in 2013. In 2015, then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter directed the services to open all military occupational specialties to women. Currently, 356 women are combat arms soldiers, and 17 women have graduated from the Army’s Ranger School. The Marine Corps has 113 enlisted women and 29 officers in previously restricted specialties. Specifically in infantry, the Marine Corps has 26 enlisted Marines and one officer who are women. The secretary said he cannot make a determination about the situation because “so few women have signed up along these lines. “We don’t even have data at this time that I can answer your question, he added.

Unit culture

Part of what drives the question is the culture of close-combat units, the retired Marine Corps general said. “I was never under any illusions at what level of respect my Marines would have for me if I couldn’t run with the fastest of them and look

like it didn’t bother me [or] if I couldn’t do as many pullups as the strongest of them, Mattis said. “It was the unfairness of the infantry. How did the infantry get its name? Infant soldier. Young soldier. Very young soldier. They’re cocky, they’re rambunctious, they’re necessarily macho, and it’s the most primitive — I would say even evil — environment. You can’t even explain it. The close-combat fight is war at its most basic, and Mattis cited an Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. quote when talking to his fellow Civil War veterans: “We have shared the incommunicable experience of war. The nation needs to discuss this issue, the secretary said. “The military has got to have officers who look at this with a great deal of objectivity and at the same time remember our natural inclination to have this open to all, he said. “But we cannot do something that militarily doesn’t make sense. The Army chief of staff and Marine Corps commandant are looking at the issue. “This is a policy that I inherited, and so far the cadre is so small we have no data on it, he said. “We’re hoping to get data soon. There are a few stalwart young ladies who are charging into this, but they are too few. Clearly the jury is out on it, but what we’re trying to do is give it every opportunity to succeed if it can.

Errol Flynn was that guy — that one guy, we all know them — who was too handsome for his own good. Early on, he figured out what his looks could do for him, and he rode that wave to various destinations. He was a textbook womanizer, an astoundingly successful player — a lech, a cad, a rake, and any number of other adjectives that describe the combination of sexual appetite and the charisma required to feed it Flynn’s parents were from Tasmania — that little island south of Australia — and both had long convict family histories, which was the case with many Tasmanians at the time. Yet he grew up relatively wealthy, as his father had made good and become a biology professor, and his mother came from a family of “seafarers, which led to Flynn’s lifelong interest in boats, the sea, looking natty in white pants, etc. But he was a hell-raiser, expelled a billion times for all sorts of mischief, including purportedly sleeping with a laundress at one of his schools.

It was his performance as Captain Blood that skyrocketed handsome and devilish Errol Flynn to stardom in 1935 and The Adventures of Robin Hood that made him a superstar three years later. His leading lady in both films was orchidaceous Olivia de Havilland, who celebrated her 99th birthday this July 1. Flynn was a good amateur boxer who, under former Junior Welterweight Champion of the World Mushy Callahan’s training and guidance (“Next to Cagney, Errol Flynn is the best fighter on the Warner lotâ€?), turned in an excellent performance as the man who dethroned John L. Sullivan in 1942’s Gentleman Jim. By the 1950s, however, Flynn was a bloated shadow of his former self. But, regardless of how washed-up and forgotten, he still had an eye for the ladies. Or, in any event, for the girls. And I do mean girls. Fifteen-year-old Beverly Aadland was dancing in Marjorie Morningstar when spotted by the jowly 48-year-old rouĂŠ. There was initially but small reaction on her part when told of Flynn’s interest, as “Errol’s reputation had sunk so far,â€? writes Charles Higham in his rumor-ridden biography of the swashbuckler, “that Beverly, who was not a movie buff, scarcely knew who he was.â€? In fairness to Flynn, he was indeed under the impression that Beverly was 18. Ah, but once he found out that she was barely out of pigtails‌it was full steam ahead. This, despite narrowly escaping conviction on two statutory rape charges several years before. “Lawyer to the Starsâ€? Jerry Giesler wouldn’t have gotten him off this time, but with the blessing of Beverly’s onelegged and open-minded (anyway, self-serving) mother, “The affair of this fifteen-year-old girl and forty-eight-year-old man began that same week.â€? Adventures ensued. Once, Errol took Beverly to a lesbian nightclub in Paris, where he strenuously objected when “a powerful, leather-clad dyke seized Beverly and began dancing with her cheek-to-cheek.â€? Smacked on the chin by the mighty Mytilenian, Flynn “flew out the door and landed in the gutter.â€? But the fun and games couldn’t last. Though a comparatively young man, Flynn’s body was worn out by drinking and womanizing. He was barely 50 when he suffered what was not his first heart attack while visiting Vancouver with Beverly on October 14, 1959. “Take me, please, Lord, not him,â€? the 17-year-old cried. Her prayer wasn’t answered.

Javier in that he is happy to share the story of his life and in great emotional detail. Discovering what is missing in his life, he is unsure how to get it without hurting those he loves. Costa as Isabel tries her best to make a good home for husband and son. Even when Javier closes down more and more, Isabel moves forward attempting to keep their family together. Costa is lovely, endearing and more importantly — must make a choice she never asked to make. Monner as Rigo is a young man who clearly loves his mother and the life she has given him. Now it is his time and the decisions are now one an adult must make. 12 0DU

Patinkin as Irwin wants what’s best for his granddaughter and when wife Linda (Jean Smart) can no longer be a part of that, he takes it one event at a time. I have to admit that Irwin is the grandfather we probably all wish we had. Cooke as Dylan is an angry young woman who hides it in the changes from year to year. Rebellious teen to uber rebellious young woman, she squashes her emotions in sarcasm and raw humor. Other cast include Isabel Durant as Shari Dickstein, Lorenza Izzo as Elena, Jake Robinson as Henry and Samuel L. Jackson as Samuel L. Jackson. “Life Itself brings the world a little closer together in that our paths crisscross in both time and place. This is a theme that Fogelman seems to have found his niche in writing. This Is Us is

all about life, love, understanding, misunderstanding, insecurities, family, restraint, sadness, hopes and the emotions we all struggle with. “Life Itself embraces all of those issues as well. There are no special effects, no car chases, no action sequences and no super heroes. Instead, it is the story of people who are just trying to figure out how to be good people in a world where the word ‘good’ holds different weight for everyone. The films story puts the weakness and human frailties we all have forward and let us feel it with the characters. In the end — we’re all part of a greater story!

ST-PIERRE Continued from Page 4

Bisping, but it was a mistake. I should have stayed at my actual weight, who knows if I would have fought better. But one thing is for sure, my health would not have been compromised. All of that leads to an obvious question: With Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor set to go down Oct. 6, is St-Pierre eyeing the winner of UFC 229’s main event as his potential next foe? “I can’t say yet, yes or no. One thing I know is the UFC will never want me to go to 155, St-Pierre said, laughing. “They will be scared that I will ride off into the sunset with their belt again.
