STILL THERE HOW OBAMA IS FUNDING THE ANTI-TRUMP RESISTANCE
By Paul Sperry | New York Post
W
all Street might be shocked to learn it is helping bankroll the anti-Trump “resistance movement that’s aggressively fighting policies it favors — including corporate tax cuts and the repeal of Obama-era banking and health-care regulations. The Obama administration’s massive shakedown of Big Banks over the mortgage crisis included unprecedented back-door funding for dozens of Democratic activist groups who were not even victims of the crisis. At least three liberal nonprofit organizations the Justice Department approved to receive funds from multibillion-dollar mortgage settlements were instrumental in killing the ObamaCare repeal bill and are now lobbying against GOP tax reform, as well as efforts to rein in illegal immigration. An estimated $640 million has been diverted into what critics say is an improper, if not unconstitutional, “slush fund fed from government settlements with JPMorgan Chase and Co., Citigroup Inc. and Bank of America Corp., according to congressional sources. The payola is potentially earmarked for third-party interest groups approved by the Justice Department and HUD without requiring any proof of how the funds will be spent. Many of the recipients so far are radical leftist organizations who solicited the settlement cash from the administration even though they were not parties to the lawsuits, records show. “During the Obama administration, groups committed to ‘revolutionary social change’ sent proposals and met with high-level HUD and Justice Department officials to try to get their pieces of the settlement pie, Cause of Action Institute vice president Julie Smith told The Post. Some of the chosen beneficiaries are now actively militating against the Trump administration and its policies, including:
The National Council of La Raza
The Hispanic-rights group strenuously protested the Republican-led “skinny repeal of the Affordable Care Act after receiving at least $1.5 million from the Obama regime’s bank settlement funds, congressional researchers say. The notoriously radical organization, which advocates on behalf of illegal immigrants, argued the Trump proposal would have a “harmful impact on the Hispanic community, including stripping potentially “8 million Latinos of medical coverage. “The Latino community cannot afford a repeal of the ACA, La Raza warned its members, while encouraging them to fight the legislation in email alerts. In July, the group held a large rally to protest the repeal effort in Arizona — GOP Sen. John STILL THERE, continued on Page 8

THREE VETS REUNITE IN EMOTIONAL ‘LAST FLAG FLYING’ By Jeri Jacquin | MilitaryPress
In theaters from writer/director Richard Linklater and Amazon Studios is a journey bringing the past and the present together for the “Last Flag Flying. It is 2003, and Larry Shepherd (Steve Carell) walks into the bar of Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston), who at first doesn’t recognize him. Eventually, Sal realizes he is talking to Doc, a man he served with during the Vietnam War. They are both happy to see one another. After a night of drinking, he asks Sal to join him on a little adventure. That leads both men to the doorstep of a church run by Rev. Mueller (Laurence Fishburne), much to the amusement of Sal. When the three have dinner with the reverend and his wife, Doc asks the two men if he will go with him to retrieve the coffin of his son who was recently killed in Iraq. Absolutely stunned, the two men agree, and on their trip, the discussion of what happened to the three of them in Vietnam is hinted at. Arriving at Dover Air Force Base, Doc learns from Larry’s buddy Washington (J. Quinton Johnson) how his son died. That changes everything, as Doc decides to take his son home for burial much to the aggravation of Col. Wilits (Yul Vazquez). It is on the train ride home that Sal and Mueller talk about what happened in Vietnam, Doc keeps himself together and Washington escorts Larry home. The 30 years between Vietnam and Iraq brings about conversations that needed to be had and closure to souls wounded by it all. Some friendships go on forever. Carell as Doc is absolutely stunning and that’s the only word for it. There isn’t a lot of dialogue for his character, but then again, I wouldn’t expect there not to be. Every emotion that pours out of Carell is heartbreaking and endearing in different ways. As a man who has lost a son, it isn’t the only thing he has lost in his life. There doesn’t seem to be a resentful bone in his body, and even when he shows a moment of anger, it is justified. Fishburne as Mueller is a reverend who has embraced a different life. Once a wild

Marine, he is now a settled man with a wife who holds him true to the collar he wears. There are moments where Fishburne completely lets loose, and they send the audience into fits of laughter. When he embraces his faith, he reaches out to Doc and shakes his head at Sal. Cranston as Sal is completely out of control! He doesn’t like it when people play games, believes in shooting straight from the hip and doesn’t give a damn if he drinks from dusk till‌ well, dusk again. Thrilled to be with his Vietnam buddy Doc, he is shocked to discover the life that Mueller chose after their time in war. He calls everything out, embraces the insanity of life and finds that he has been missing out once he gets his hands on a cell phone. As Carell is the emotion of the film and Fishburne is the spiritual guide, Cranston is all the chaos with no filter in between the two men, and he rocks it from start to finish. Johnson as Washington is a young soldier who is trying to do what is right both as Larry’s best friend and as a Marine. He gets to know Doc, Mueller and Sal, which
helps him understand so much more about being a soldier. Vazquez as Wilits is a man on his own mission who clearly doesn’t understand what being a parent is all about. Other cast include Deanna Reed-Foster as Ruth, Graham Wolfe as John Redman, Jeff Monahan as O’Toole, Richard Robich-
aux as Anorak and an appearance by the wonderful Cicely Tyson. “Last Flag Flying is an emotional roller coaster, and I am not kidding. One minute the audience is laughing so hard that they are crying to the next minute of crying so LAST FLAG FLYING, continued on Page 12

MEBANE: TACKLING KEY TO DEFENSIVE SUCCESS CHARGERS REPORT
by Art Garcia Jr.
Perryman returns after ankle injury Entering a bye week with a record of 3-5, the Los Angeles Chargers have a number of voids to fill if they have any hope of getting into the post season. One area in particular is their run defense, which ranks 31st at the midpoint of the season. As the team prepared to face the Jaguars, MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. caught up with nose tackle Brandon Mebane to ask him a few questions. Art Garcia Jr.: This is your 11th year in the NFL — can you believe you’ve been in the league this long? Brandon Mebane: Yes. I’ve always set high goals for myself as far as playing this game, and I’m thankful for the man upstairs — I thank God for letting me play this long. AG: You guys were on a three-game win streak before losing to the Patriots last
Chargers nose tackle Brandon Mebane says the defense must make tackles to fight against the run if the team hopes to post wins in the second half of the season.
week, how is the team doing right now? BM: We’re doing pretty good right now. We’re just preparing for the Jacksonville Jaguars. They have a pretty good team, and they do some things pretty well that we have to try and stop.
Got a car? Got some free time? Drive with Call 844-736-9577
AG: It looks like you’ll be facing a tough one this week in rookie running back Leonard Fournette — he looks like the real deal? BM: Yeah he’s a pretty good running back. So the thing is, is you can’t let him get going because he’s the real thing. AG: The defense has struggled against the run and has been ranked near the bottom of the league all year. What is the key to improving your run defense? BM: I think the main thing is to get things locked down and to go out and make tackles — just make tackles, have everybody play their gaps and do their job, get off blacks and pursue the ball carrier. AG: Do you think that could be one of the problems — guys not disciplined in playing their gaps and maybe over compensating for someone else? BM: No, I don’t agree with that. I think we all collectively just have to tackle. AG: How happy are you to be playing under Gus Bradley again? BM: I love playing under Gus Bradley because it’s the same system I’ve pretty much played in my entire career — so I love playing in this system. AG: In addition to getting some rest over the bye week, the defense gets Denzel Perryman back on the field for the first time this season. How great is that? BM: Yeah, Denzel is a great football player, a great person and we’re happy to have him back. So he’s going to go in there and we can’t wait to see him make some plays.

during their three-game win streak. Secondly, it gives the players time to rest up and heal before retaking the field for the final eight games of the regular season. And third, as mentioned previously, middle linebacker Denzel Perryman was activated from the Reserve/Injured-Designated to Return list and will see his first action of the season against the Jaguars. A second-round pick out of the University of Miami in 2015, Perryman missed the first half of this season due to an ankle injury he suffered in the first preseason game this year. Perryman’s return should give the defense an immediate boost both mentally and physically. Since becoming a starter halfway through his rookie year, Perryman quickly earned the respect of his teammates through both his leadership and the tough, physical play he displayed on the field. Per Zach Aulakh (Pro Football Focus), Perryman finished his rookie year with high marks — his overall grade of 82.4 ranked 15th at his position and his 18.3 runstop percentage was top-rated amongst all linebackers. Although his production slipped slightly his second season, his runstop percentage of 9.4 percent did remain among the top 20 inside linebackers in 2016. He also made an improvement defending the pass, going from 1.13 yards per coverage snap allowed as a rookie, to 0.96 in his second year. Prior to the Jaguar game, the Chargers rush defense was second-worst in the NFL, ranked No. 31, allowing a whopping 135.1 yards per game. Although the defense is ranked No. 8 in both passing (201.9 yds. per gm) and points (19.0 pts. per gm), respectfully, they sit in the middle of the pack for total defense with a No. 19 ranking (337.0 yds. per gm).
The bye week couldn’t have come at a better time for the Chargers. First, it gives the team some time to regroup, study both the successes and the mistakes they made over the first half of the season and develop a successful game plan where they capitalMEBANE, continued on Page 8 ize on the positive aspects they displayed XXX NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN t OFXT!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN

Joining the three U.S. carriers and their strike groups were three Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force warships including the helicopter destroyer JS Ise, a guided-missile destroyer and general purpose destroyer. “The JMSDF is always U.S.ing every opportunity to strengthen the JMSDFU.S.N alliance, and joining an exercise like this is a natural event to stabilize regional security, a statement from the Maritime Self-Defense Force said. South Korean vessels joined exercises with the U.S. warships on Sunday, according to U.S. Navy photos. The South Korean Defense Ministry said it sent two destroyers equipped with the Aegis anti-ballistic missile defense system as well as five other warships to the exercises. Each U.S. aircraft carrier holds more than 60 aircraft, including F/A-18 fighter jets, airborne early warning and control aircraft and helicopters for antisubmarine warfare. The ships accompanying the carriers included destroyers and cruisers equipped with the Aegis system as well as Tomahawk cruise missiles. U.S. attack submarines typically accompany U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups, but the Navy U.S.ually keeps their specific locations secret. The last time three U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups worked together in the Western Pacific was off the U.S. island of Guam in 2007, according to a Navy statement.

Despite their 20-17 overtime loss to the Jaguars, Perryman made an impact on the run defense by leading the team with eight total tackles and one assist. The defense held Fournette to just 33 rushing yards and a 1.9 yard average — both season lows for the rookie. Returning to the starting middle linebacker position, Perryman replaced Hayes Pullard, who earned a grade of just 31.4 so far this season — which ranked last among linebackers (Z. Aulakh PFF). The Endzone: Last week Pro Football Focus’ Nathan Jahnke listed two Chargers on his 2017 PFF Mid-Season All-Rookie Team — LG Dan Feeney and CB Desmond King (listed as a Flex D — Slot CB). To his surprise, the old man played fairly quickly. He didn’t hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn’t waste much time. Finally, they reached the last fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot, the old man finally said, “You know, when I was your age, I’d hit the ball right over that tree. With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally lay. SPYMASTER Continued from Page 2
can GIs were retreating and being killed, Nichols’ “team of cryptographers broke the North Korean army codes, which helped the American forces hold the line, saving them from being pushed off the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula as well as helping in finding the targets for bombings of North Korea. Another achievement was his prediction of North Korea invading the South. This was much to the chagrin of Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s chief of intelligence, Army Major Gen. Charles A. Willoughby, who predicted just the opposite. Hardin recounts, “The American ambassador in Seoul, John Muccio, wrote a response to Willoughby who tried to oust Nichols, ‘In my opinion, there is no other American intelligence unit or agency now operating in South Korea which produces a larger volume of useful intelligence material on Communist and subversive activities than does Mr. Nichols’ unit.’ Harden also delves into a moral question: How far should covert operators go to save American lives, and does that include a legal license to murder? In his own words, Nichols described himself as a “thief, assassin, judge, jury and executioner. This master spy entered the dark side when he became a part of the Republic of Korea Head Of State Syngman Rhee’s world that included torturing, beheading and killing tens of thousands of South Koreans. He was not a particularly nice guy. For example, there is a picture of him standing on the roof of the South Korean Army Headquarters next to a severed head in a bucket. In reading this book, Americans also can get a better understanding of the current crisis. The present-day North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un is the grandson of Kim II-sung, the leader during the Korean War. Back then, as today, there’s no U.S. embassy in Pyongyang, few Western business travelers and even fewer tourists flowing in and out. American intelligence officers are unable to blend in undetected or gain a foothold. “Nichols knew his agents were disposable, Harden said. “When he sent them inside North Korea, he expected most
would be captured, tortured or killed, with as many as eight out of 10 never coming back. Yet, he did provide answers for his bosses. I detail in the book how he conceived, organized and lead covert missions inside North Korea. Gen. E. Stratemeyer, the commander of Far East Air Forces, wrote in his diary during the first year of the Korean War that Nichols had ‘performed the impossible.’ Fast-forward to today, where the North Korean regime is still repressive, with closed borders and secret police. They have a stranglehold on the people because they eliminate their enemies and have a narrative to explain their actions. During the Korean War, Gen. Curtis E. LeMay, head of the Strategic Air Command, guessed that American bombs killed about 20 percent of the North Korean population, roughly 1.9 million people. “The Kim family is able to stoke anti-American hatred and perpetuate its rule, all the while telling a terrifying, factbased story, Harden said. “It is a warning to the North Korean people that Americans will once again come with bombs, fire and death, and the only ones to protect them are the leaders. “I spoke to more than 20 North Korean defectors who were taught to fear and hate the Americans. Even after they arrived in South Korea they were very reluctant to criticize ‘the Great Leader, the Dear Leader, or the current leader.’ With their cruel and unsavory tactics, they not only keep the people at bay but countries as well. These leaders through the years have used extortion and repressive techniques, but now they have missiles threatening South Korea, Japan and the U.S. It is harder today to infiltrate because North Korea concentrates all its resources on the border and has new technology for detection. So Nichols’ 20 percent success rate of infiltration is a far better ratio than what is transpiring today. This book delves into an engrossing hidden history of wartime espionage. Too bad there is not someone like Nichols today. Although he was unsavory he was successful in gathering fact-filled intelligence.
