Carderock division showcases combatant craft division at DOD Lab Day 2017 By Dustin Q. Diaz NSWCCD Public Affairs WEST BETHESDA, MD.

Employees from Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division’s (NSWCCD) Combatant Craft Division (CCD) from Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia displayed the results of developing technologies and partnerships at the second biennial DOD Lab Day in the Pentagon center courtyard. Lab Day showcased innovations from 63 Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and medical laboratories and engineering centers across the country, featuring more than 80 exhibits. “It’s our goal to hold this event every two years to bring in the labs and show what our government scientists and engineers are doing every day to make a difference in the fight,” Principal director of research in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Research and Engineering) Dale A. Ormond said, to begin the event. “The displays here demonstrate what our defense labs do to solve problems today and design solutions for tomorrow.” Ormond introduced Mary J. Miller, acting assistant secretary of defense for research and engineering, who talked about her own history as a “lab rat” in the DOD laboratory community working on night vision for the Army early in her career and the diversity of the technologies on display and entities represented at Lab Day. She then discussed some of these in more detail, like

the Soldier Weapon Exoskeleton on display by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, advanced ordnance technologies from the Air Force and the unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) and Stiletto Maritime Demonstration Program on display at CCD’s booth. “These labs provide a flexible in-house capability to quickly adjust to the warfighter’s needs. They provide science and technology and engineering expertise to the entire Department of Defense that allows our nation to maintain a technological edge over potential adversaries,” Miller said. “Through these efforts, the department has continued to be the engine of innovation that allows our military to overcome current and future challenges to our security.” DOD Lab Day was sponsored by Rep. Jim Langevin of Rhode Island, a member of the

House Armed Services Committee and open to members of Congress, STEM-participating high schools, Pentagon employees, the media and special guests. Carderock’s participation in the event highlighted current and future efforts for a range of purpose-built and re-purposed manned and unmanned combatant craft contributing to future warfighting needs for the Navy and Marine Corps, according to Scott Petersen, Combatant Craft Systems Design Branch head. “Today we’re showcasing two programs—unmanned vehicle programs and our Stiletto program. It’s some of the most exciting work we’re doing,” Petersen said. “It’s emergent, it’s relevant, and it’s being looked at a lot to change how we do business in the Navy. We’re postured, we’re developing technologies, we’re getting smarter, and we’re here to

showcase these capabilities we have.” The Stiletto maritime demonstration platform is an experimental all-carbon-fiber craft that was originally built to explore the scalability of non-mechanical dynamic lift and highspeed performance for military operations. The ship has since become a test platform that can give industry, academic and government organizations a realistic environment in which they can demonstrate emerging capabilities and technologies without paying for operating costs. Petersen told visitors more about how CCD and the Navy use Stiletto, including as a command-and-control platform for UUVs, and why UUVs will figure heavily into the Navy’s future. “Like a drone you use to remove human involvement, there are all kinds of reasons to unman a boat: you can res-

Bataan receives Blue H Gold Star award 5th year in a row By MCC Anastasia McCarroll USS Bataan Public Affairs U.S. 5TH FLEET

Amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) earned the Blue H, the Navy Surgeon General’s Health Promotion and Wellness Award, gold star, May 16, for the 5th consecutive year. “The Blue H award is the Navy Surgeon General’s recognition of a command that has reached a level of health promotion for the entire crew,” Medical Administration Officer Lt. Matthew Forbes explained. The Blue H evaluates how each unit improved workplace health promotion policies, activities and outcomes in areas such as; healthy eating, active living, tobacco-free living, sexual, reproductive and psychological health, injury and violence-free living, responsible drinking and weight management. For fiscal year 2016, Bataan attained a level of excellence in health, wellness and fitness due to the efforts of the health promotion coordinator, command fitness leader, safety department, and drug and alcohol prevention advocate which all align with Bataan’s medical department’s programs and policies. “The Blue H has a large medical aspect and medical drives it, but it really has an entire command view so it

takes a lot of the different elements of how we incorporate different command programs of the ship and put them together,” Forbes said. Along with being healthy, Navy and Marine Corps commands attempting to earn the award enables comparison and analysis across both services on their health status to the Bureau of Navy Medicine. There are different levels to the award; Bronze Anchor, Silver Eagle and Gold Star. Every organization that submits for the award receives a Bronze Anchor. To earn Silver, a unit must attain a minimum of 50 percent of available points in every topic. To earn the Gold Star, a unit must attain a minimum of 50 percent of available points in every topic, achieve key must-do criteria and also achieve 80 percent of the total available points, which Bataan did.

Bataan has received this award so many times because of crew mentality and spirit. The crew frequently hosts events like fun runs and fitness competitions always showing full support. “Blue H is command level and it speaks for the culture on the ship,” Forbes added. “When we do the chiefs birthday run and the sexual assault prevention and response run, we always see a large response from the Sailors who are willing to go to these events and do more not only for themselves, but for the command.” Bataan continues to earn this award by working as a unit and striving to improve. “Something that contributes to our success in the future is a commitment by leadership to help promote healthy living and a healthy lifestyle for our Sailors and commitment by the Sailors to strive for themselves and for their shipmates,” Forbes concluded. “It’s all built by Sailors by eating and living a healthy lifestyle.” Bataan and its ready group are deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.

cue a person from a minefield without endangering others or allow a Sailor to run a harbor security mission from an air conditioned room via remote control,” Petersen said. “Then you have fully autonomous UUVs. Perhaps for that, you could set a boat by an oil rig and set it to respond when a vehicle gets too close. We’re improving things like obstacle avoidance to make these vehicles more robust and capable, because there are many missions where you want the man out of the environment and back on shore.” Mechanical engineer at CCD’s Systems Integration Branch John Phillips and Program manager for the Stiletto program Dennis Danko, also represented Carderock at Lab Day. Technologies on display by other Navy entities at Lab Day included low-cost ultra-wideband phased array antennas, transparent biometric armor and the electromagnetic railgun. Also at the event, Miller discussed the importance of STEM outreach, an endeavor Carderock is heavily involved in, and James MacStravic, performing the duties of the undersecretary of defense for

Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, recognized the DOD Service Scientists of the Year and the DOD STEM Advocates of the Year on stage in the courtyard.
