NEWSLETTER QUARTER FOUR 2022
Hidden River Tunnel, Bloomington
In this issue 3 CJ Potts 4 Safety from Amy Wright 6 Area Highlights 10 Department Updates 18 Employee Celebrations 22 Community Involvement 27 HC+M Happenings
We started the year with one of the largest backlogs of work in our history. As always, a focus on safety and quality was imperative. Due to challenging weather conditions early, we had a slow start to the year. As the weather broke into the second quarter, you did what you always do: stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park. And as you know, the weather was not the only challenge: We also dealth with rising commodity costs, supply chain issues, and never-before-seen material shortages. Those challenges led to subcontractors, suppliers and haulers not honoring signed agreements. Altogether, this all added up to unprecedented times.
But what did you do? You buckled down, came up with schedules and plans to address these issues and continued to meet and exceed our customers’ needs while providing a high-quality product and work environment. Such a credit to the character and integrity of every one of you! I can’t thank you enough for the diligence, care, and commitment shown through such challenging times both professionally and personally.
During 2022, a few other opportunities came to light. We have grown at an extremely fast pace, and somewhere along the way, communication became less consistent Our collective understanding of The Milestone Way, our organizational strategy and goals, and your understanding of how your role contributes and adds value became fragmented.
As a result, a focus in 2023 is consistent communication around The Milestone Way, our strategy and goals, and how our people drive success.
At the heart of The Milestone Way is making lives better, one road and bridge at a time. We touch so many people every day and our actions impact our teams, our customers and our communities. A positive impact can make lives better in each of these vitally important groups.
Three simple ways to assure we make a positive impact is through our priorities of safety, both physically and psychologically, quality of our product and quality of life, and to be a performance leader (the absolute best in the business) while exceeding production expectations and providing a fair profit for our owners.
Additionally, we uphold our leadership behavioral expectations of building trust, having a passion for what you do, showing respect in our communication and being committed to one, never letting each other fail.
When we exhibit those behaviors, we model our shared Heritage Group Values: Betting on People, Tackling the Big Problems, Building Long Term Relationships and Mutual Trust, Keeping our Eyes
Open for Opportunity, Creating Enduring Value and Doing the Right Thing Always.
To support and enhance communication and feedback in 2023, we intend to start a bi-weekly podcast and begin a virtual feedback center. Both of these are huge undertakings, and more information will follow as we get close to starting this process.
I would like to finish by saying thank you to all of you and your families for your constant commitment and sacrifice. You are Milestone, and you are second to none! I pray that your Christmas and New Year celebrations were relaxing, enjoyable, family-filled and love shared. Let’s make 2023 the absolute best and safest yet! Together!!
CJ POTTS COO, HERITAGE CONSTRUCTION
As the year ends, and we ring in 2023, I would like to reflect on the 2022 construction season and touch on the year ahead.
MILESTONELP.COM
Safety is our top priority at Milestone
require extensive personal protective equipment, start each day with a safety huddle and conduct detailed hazard analyses on our jobs so we can build that work safely. We have severe weather and emergency evacuation protocols in place; we conducted active shooter training. We take these important steps to mitigate risk so you can go home safely every night.
Our concern for your safety doesn’t begin when you arrive at work and end when you go home. In fact, safety does not include only your physical safety. Physical safety, bodily health and well-being are important elements, and just as important are psychological safety, mental health, and emotional well-being.
We don’t talk about mental health and emotional well-being often. A significant stigma exists in our society around mental and emotional health issues, so much so that individuals suffer in silence living in shame and fear without getting treatment. This suffering in silence can lead to catastrophic results.
While attending the APAI Winter Conference in December, I attended a breakout session and learned some startling information. The construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates of any industry (cdc.gov), and the number of deaths by suicide in our industry is 5 times the rate of workrelated fatalities (cdc.gov).
Let me say that again a different way. According to the statistics above, for every two individuals in construction who die in a work-related fatality, 10 die by suicide. That isn’t a statistic I want to live with, and I am sure after reading that, you don’t either.
So, how do we make a difference? We get vulnerable. We start having open conversations about our emotional and mental health. We ask for help. We let people know it’s ok to NOT be ok.
I have suffered from anxiety and depression multiple times in my life, primarily in the postpartum periods. After my first child was born, I found myself in significant physical and mental pain, and after spending a night in the hospital in my second postpartum week, the admitting physician recognized my symptoms and called in a clinical psychologist. Having never had a child before, I had no idea what I was experiencing was postpartum depression.
Thankfully I was able to work with both my physician and a psychologist to begin treatment with medication and behavioral therapy. That was over twenty years ago, and I have not experienced an anxiety attack since. My psychologist also encouraged me to view my mental and emotional health the same way I viewed my physical health. I had annual physicals, didn’t I? And I saw a physician when I was physically ill, right? She advised me that mental and emotional help is no different; there may be periods when you need treatment and when you don’t.
I share my story for the purposes of starting a conversation. I am not a therapist or a counselor, and I am not recommending specific treatment or implying that all women experience postpartum depression.

Q4 2022 MILESTONELP.COM AFTER
Champaign Asphalt Company (CACO) has had a tremendous 2022, with help of all the HC+M companies.
Paramount among our season accomplishments was our zero-loss time this year, which we are extremely grateful. In total, CACO and its entities (Illiana Construction Company, Champaign Signal & Lighting Company, Open Road Asphalt Company, Open Road Paving Company and Nationwide Surfacing & Stone Solutions) have hit historic levels in volume and geographic reach.
As we prepare for our 2023, we hope to expand our Pavement Preservation business, and continue to maintain our markets with daily emphasis on the safety of our people.
Champaign Asphalt Charitable Giving
Champaign Asphalt’s management and employees give to a variety of community endeavors in a multitude of ways: donating time, money, resources, and energy. Some of the local community causes to be on the receiving end of our gifts in 2022 include the Eastern Illinois Foodbank, Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, Cunningham Children’s Home, Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club, Champaign County Forest Preserve, Camp Drake – Boys and Girls Scouts, Austin’s Place. We also helped with the construction of a remote-control toy car racetrack in one of the City of Champaign’s “pop up parks” located in an underserved area of town.
CHAMPAIGN AREA HIGHLIGHTS
Milestone IT
BEHIND THE SCENES
When folks think of IT professionals, we typically think of a person sitting behind a computer with their headphones on, surrounded by multiple screens, researching, testing, chatting with colleagues, to resolve customer issues—all from the comfort of our offices. While this is often true, there is also another side to technology services that requires us to step out of the office and into the “boots” of those we are here to help – especially in the heavy construction industry.
During the week of December 5 - 11, Milestone IT worked diligently with our software & cellular vendors and subcontractors to prepare and implement over 100 new Android devices for our Speedway Redimix trucks including cement, slingers and semis. Our implementation team consisted of 5 people including Sean Bennett (project lead), Kena Seguin (project manager), Michael Ruf (IT subcontractor), Branden Seguin (IT subcontractor) and Bradley Seguin (IT subcontractor).
Together we were able to visit each Speedway Redimix plant over a 2 day weekend when trucks were mostly stationary and operations were paused. This allowed us the time to get our boots and safety gear on, jump in each and every truck, dismount the old tablets, then install and test a brand-new tablet before moving onto the next. Our ultimate goal was to make sure when our drivers came in on Monday morning, they were ready to roll and indeed they were! With this technology now refreshed, we should expect another productive and smooth season this spring as well. Stay Safe!

Steve Friess named Chairman of the Board for ACPA
Steve Friess, Vice President of concrete operations at Milestone Contractors, LP, was named Chairman of the Board for the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) at the organization’s 59th Annual Meeting, held November 29 –December 1, 2022 in Nashville, TN. Friess takes the helm at a time when the paving industry is poised to receive approximately $350 billion over five years in highway and bridge funding as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
Under Friess’ chairmanship, a significant focus of ACPA will be to continue progress on improving concrete’s sustainability and resiliency. Concrete has proven durability on roadways and airfields across the nation, many of which boast a lifespan of 50, 75 or even 100 years of service. Resilient concrete infrastructure can recover after a disruptive event, like flooding, reducing future reconstruction costs and societal costs associated with the inability to use the infrastructure during rescue, recovery and rebuilding.
Friess will also help the association navigate several critical workforces challenges the concrete industry faces. “As an association and as individual employers, we must commit to formally training our workers and leaders, so they are positioned to have the ability to meet the upcoming demand,” said Friess. “Certification, which is being increasingly specified for projects, is key. For example, plant operator training that satisfies the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) P501 ‘Portland Cement Concrete Pavement’ specification will ensure a continually improved product.”
Friess knows all about improvements to concrete products and pavements. With 35 years of industry experience, Friess has been instrumental in developing Heritage Construction + Materials expertise in concrete at Milestone Contractors. “We’ve enhanced our concrete offerings so dramatically that I’m proud to say we’re the only concrete paving contractor in Indiana with accreditations in ASHTO R-18 and ASTM C1077 concrete testing lab,” said Friess.
Helping spread the word about concrete’s longevity will help increase the use of a material that saves taxpayer dollars, conserves natural resources, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and frees up state resources to pursue other infrastructure projects. Friess states that he is "passionate about concrete and will bring that passion to his role as chairman for the ACPA.”
Friess lives in Indiana and has been married to his wife, Nancy, for 28 years. They have seven grown children and ten grandchildren.
Congratulations to Steve on this achievement! We couldn’t think of a better man to represent the industry. We can’t wait to see all that you will do!
“One way I’ll lead the charge at the ACPA is by working with the team to promote our success stories— especially stories about long-lived concrete roadways,” said Friess.

A Message from Your Safety Reps
As we end the 2022 construction season and eagerly await 2023, we'd like to say how much we appreciate your good efforts and the results that you brought forward this season.
Please take the time to reflect on how important your loved ones are to you and how important you are to them.
Especially during winter weather, if you are travelling, don’t take unnecessary risks and make sure to look after each other. Take a few minutes to plan your drive and the stops along the way. Stay alert and be prepared for any emergency you may encounter. Charged phone, first aid kit, flashlights, blankets, snacks and water are good items to have on a long trip. Don’t text and drive or drive under the influence.
We wish all of you a happy and safe 2023!

LAFAYETTE AREA
First, I want to thank all the working members that make the Lafayette Area function. As we continue to grow as a company and an area, I am very proud of the way all employees have handled the opportunity. Being spread out across northern Indiana, our communication was tested.
We faced that adversity head on and had a great year. One focus point for upcoming winter training will be the new federal trenching/excavation emphasis. OSHA has decided to make excavation work sites a critical focus point. As we continue to educate our workforce on the hazards of working in and or around trenches, we plan to spread awareness on this topic through a plethora of different training aids. Looking ahead to 2023 we must also focus on our mental health. As we work alongside our peers, we must remember the human aspects of life. We never truly know what the next person is going through, mental health can also affect your physical health and work performance. As we continue to strive for excellence, remember to make time for your personal health. Looking forward to a new year full of new challenges and opportunities.
BLOOMINGTON AND COLUMBUS AREAS
I am excited to finish up another eventful season in the Columbus and Bloomington areas, as well as the final leg of I-69, section 6.5. We are up in hours overall, had many challenges this year on various projects and brought on several new hires. Your commitment to leadership, transparency, customer service, planning and doing things safely has made my job easy. I love being your resource and hope to have another successful year next year.
The Bloomington and Columbus areas have customers that are unique to Milestone, which include Cummins, IU, Duke Energy, IPL, Crane Naval Base and Camp Atterbury. Each of these customers has their own safety requirements and you always rise to the challenge. Without our group effort to strive for constant communication and improvement, these successes wouldn’t be possible.
Please have a safe and happy season, enjoy your families and as always, call if you need anything. Best Wishes!

Lance Fuller retired on October 28th this year. Lance joined the Local 150 Operators Union right out of high school and has spent 42 years in the industry – 38 with Milestone (previously Walsh & Kelly).
He did a little estimating with his Dad, which led him on the path that landed him with us as a Gradall operator. Lance spends his evenings with his wife and is looking forward to getting back to hunting and fishing, especially with his 3-yr old grandson, who he says is the best ever! He is also looking forward to welcoming another grandson who is on the way! DENNIS MILLER
Congratulations to Dennis Miller who retired this season! Dennis started working for his dad as a hanging gutter when he was young, he then went to college for Accounting. During his college days he worked through a temp service at Crider & Crider in their accounts payable.
His Milestone journey started in August 1998 when he responded to a job opening in the newspaper. From that ad he was hired as an accounts payable clerk. After 6 months with us he started working in his first project in the field office. Dennis showed us his expertise there and started managing major projects all around the state in Indy, Bloomington, and Columbus. Work boots are cold and hoodies are drawn. The day has yet to even break dawn.
First load arrives, some heat at last. Beside the screed, the huddle forms fast.
The boss buys lunch to no one’s surprise. Working late tonight – it shows in his eyes.
Too many trucks. Can’t stop today. Eat on the run – that’s the paver way.
Feet are throbbing, back is sore. Keep telling yourself “just a few hours more.”
Explaining to do – paver needs a fix. Told the loved one you’d be home by six.
Day becomes night and you quietly think When I get home, I’ll need a drink.
Last round begins. The crew is tired. Commitment and dexterity is to be admired.
A relieving sight – a cushioned seat. Crawl into your truck and rest weary feet.
Fire side drinks. Sat on your tush. Proud having known those who made the final push.

HALLOWEEN FUN!
Trunk or Treat 2022 at Sunset Hill County Park in Valparaiso, Indiana was a huge success! Lisa, Kevin, Danielle, Allie and Addie passed out over 500 pieces of candy! Check out the Halloween spirit at our Indianapolis office this year: Donna Gladden as Chester the Cheetah, Brogan Sinibaldi being a little witchy, Lady Mia, and Amy Turpin and her office looking amazing! Even baby Hayden Campbell stole all our hearts as a pumpkin that day. #3

GRIFFITH CHILI COOKOFF
The team at our Griffith office held their first annual chili cook off! With six entrants, it's safe to say no one left work hungry that day! Ashley Henningfeld took home the win and the beast trophy, while Jeff Briggs came in 2nd and Chuck Fenolio in 3rd. Days like this are what make Milestone feel like not just work, but a family! Griffith challenges other offices to give it a shot!

DARTS FOR HEARTS
This quarter, Milestone Asphalt Superintendent, Aaron Wooley, participated in Darts for Hearts a Riley Children’s Hospital (Heart Foundation) Fundraiser. The event raised $1,000 for Riley Hospital! Aaron Wooley is a great dart player and through a combined participation the money received (first place) was split and donated back to Riley Hospital.
There were 24 participants and a raffle of basket that was donated by Monica and her brother, Steve Will, of Finish Tales Bait and Tackle Shop.
This is exactly how you do Giving Back the right way - great job
Aaron Wooley!
This fundraiser was hosted by Monica Elaine Wills in memory of her niece who was a Riley child.

UNITED DAY FOR SERVICE
On November 17, serving with employees from across the Heritage family, Milestone participated in the inaugural United Day for Service! Volunteer efforts focused on addressing food insecurity in communities where our employees live and work. The events ranged from sorting food donations, packing snack kits, and packing backpacks full of food for kids to take home during Thanksgiving break. It's an honor to participate in events that were able to impact communities around the nation. Thank you to all the employees who volunteered! #7

Wheeler Mission…. is our mission too.
Several years ago, our Indianapolis Team stepped up in a time of need for the residents of Wheeler Mission and from that time on, we've considered their mission to be ‘our’ mission as well.
From cleaning gutters and picking up leaves, to making and serving meals, we've helped when asked and whereve it's been needed. Each fall, I am asked if we will be raking leaves for Wheeler Mission again. This is something we all look forward to and what a great feeling to get that question.
This year we helped prepare and take dinner to the Women’s and Children’s Shelter for an entire week because they were shorthanded and didn’t know how they were going to feed the guests. Our very own Angie Riddle, Mia Kyser, Kathy Clift, Amy Wilson, Cathy Wethington, Josh Stroud, Wes Smith, Gary Wethington, and others stepped up to cook, donate, and make sure those meals were taken to the shelter.
On Monday, November 28th it was leaf raking time again after postponing for a few days due to weather. Those helping with fall clean up duties this year were:
Josh Stroud, Jenn Wycoff, Tracy Smith, Mitch Parmalee, Ashley Price, Ashly Reiman, Emily Mick, David Denisiuk, Brad McCall, Chad Ryle, Dylan Brewsaugh, Brandon Carnell, Doug Haskamp, Bart Smith, Jacob Taylor, Mia Kyser, Chris Potts, Scott Cornelius and Chad Scott. Thank you, Emily Mick, for taking pictures and to all of you for helping, looking forward to next year and what we can do to help.
In an email from Tammy Caldwell, Volunteer Engagement Manager —Men’s Services
“We value the partnership we have with Milestone and wish every corporate group was as invested as you are. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Please pass our thanks on to all who served and send me any photos that you may have taken. Your skilled volunteerism is such a blessing to us. We hope to connect with you on future projects!”

HEART AND SOLE SHOE COLLECTION
Hey Milestone Team – from North to South, East to West and everywhere in between, we will be collecting new, used, worn out and even your ugly shoes (which might be considered new). Send them on into the Indianapolis Office or Raymond Street Garage; we have room for your shoes!!! We will be collecting until February 2023. This shoe collection benefits many organizations in need, and if they are worn out, they get recycled by Nike into playground mulch or something useful. At least they don’t go in the landfills!!! It’s a twofer!!! Any questions please contact: cathy.wethington@milestonelp.com #1
REPUBLIC AIRWAYS PLANE PULL
Hey Milestone – Mark your calendars for the 11th annual Republic Airways Plane Pull on April 22, 2023, when I am sure you will see Milestone front and center once again. Wait, I can see it now, the HC+M Officers on one team... What do you say, Geoff Dillon. Would you care to put a team together this year for this worthwhile event? Remember, proceeds from this annual event benefit A Kid Again, Indiana Wish, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent, Riley Children’s Foundation, and other charities whose mission supports children. Stay tuned for more information. Fun times ahead! #2
FOOD DRIVE DONATIONS
During the month of November our Indy team pulled together 711.05 pounds of canned and boxed meats, vegetables and other assorted items to donate to the Lutheran Child & Family Services. Barbara Walters, Director of Strategy & Innovation, Lutheran Child & Family Services said, “This goes a long way to helping feed hungry families! Thanks so much to the Milestone team”.
Thank You to everyone who donated and helped load and unload the truck and a special thank you to Emily Mick who organized the I-70 Design/Build job with suppliers and subcontractors who donated to this great cause. And, to Gary Wethington who came out of retirement for a day to haul these items to the donation facility. (Pictured – Christopher Steeb, Cathy Wethington, Josh Stroud) #3
